Five seconds before the crash? I was out on the port side close to the bow, I didn't even have time to run to get there before the impact. Now, you would think someone would know they were gonna crash MORE than five seconds before it happened -especially crashing on LAND!!???

Has to be a bow thruster fail. This is one of the worst channels in Alaska (wrangell narrows), especially during spring tides. Try steer a 2x4 with a toothpick down a fast river! I only left petersburg after the 2nd time we caught bottom on a beam trawler. Rather play with high wind and big swells, never with fast current and a narrow channel!
I rode the Matanuska once, at the time one of the newspapers had the theater showing of "Raise the Titanic ", I ripped out the photo, and crossed out Titanic, and wrote in gigantic letters ="Matanuska "!!!! Posted It on one of their corkboards ! Someone tore it down in less than 5 minutes ! 😆😆😆😄😄😄😄😆. I wish I could seen them do it!
There’s very strong currents in Petersburg making docking the ferry difficult. Thankfully accidents like this are few and far between but this is why docking with caution is so important.
