USS Caron getting rammed by the Russians in the Black Sea - Feb 1988

- Опубликовано: 1 дек 2010
- In February 1988, Caron operating with Yorktown, entered Soviet 7 miles ) territorial waters limit in the Black Sea off the Crimean Peninsula. Under international law, this act could be permissible if the ship was progressing from one point in international waters to another point in international waters via the shortest course possible, but according to the Soviet Union, it was the right of the USSR to authorize or prohibit travel in selected areas within the 12 mile limit. The United States however did not recognize the Soviet's claim in this case. To prevent it from becoming accepted precedent, the US Navy claimed that it had sailed warships through such areas at regular intervals in the past, which we had, not just two years prior.
On this occasion, Caron had onboard a ships signal exploitation spaces system, operated by a crew of 18 in support of the U.S. National Security Agency. This system was capable of recording data on Soviet defense radars and communications.
In response, the Soviets deployed a destroyer and a Mirka II class light frigate as well as a KGB and "civilian" ships to intercept the U.S. ships. Several times, Soviet vessels obtained radar "lock" on the Caron and Yorktown. Both American ships maintained a constant course and speed throughout the incident. Eventually, the Soviets lightly rammed both ships. No significant damage resulted to any of the ships involved.
Both US warships sent an account of the incident to the Commander in Chief of United States Naval Forces in Europe. The Caron reported at 13:20 local time, it was informed on channel 16 VHF by the Bezzavetny: "Soviet ships have orders to prevent violation of territorial waters, extreme measure is to strike your ship with one of ours."[1] The reply of the Caron was "I am engaged in innocent passage consistent with international law."[1] The Yorktown, in its report stated that on 9:56, local time, it was contacted by the Bezzavetny via channel 16 and told to leave Soviet territorial waters or "our ship is going to strike on yours."[1] Then, according to the report, the Bezzavetny came alongside port side of the Yorktown at 10:03 and bumped it by turning into the ship.[1]
As for the music, take note that this was shot on VHS and back in 1988, when we did not have RUclips. The only people we thought would see this was friends and family, not a bunch of people from all over the world. I was a sonar operator on one of these Russian ships back in '84. It was very similar; ours had only one two-barrel 55mm automatic cannon and two torpedo tubes as well as a lot of anti-submarine bombs. The humps in the back are the suction of two jet engines which will blow compressed air into a tunnel downstream of the propellers. These things were quite fast.

Facts the author forgot to mention:
1. The video shows only the very beginning of the incident, not the whole story
2. Yorktown had significant damages, including damaged Harpoon launchers, and caught fire
3. Following the incident Yorktown was out of service for several months because of repairs
4. After the collision, US ships immediately left the area and went to neutral waters
5. International law (UNCLOS III) allows defining territorial waters using straight baselines in case of indented coastal line.
6. As a consequence, US ships did not respect limits of Russia's territorial waters.
7. US ship could not use the right of innocent passage as they were on recon mission. (Art. 19, UNCLOS III)
Hope this helps

I remember being told by my grandpa that stuff like this wasn't infrequent back then. He said that more than a few times Russian ships in the same port as ours would do uncomfortable passes. My favorite was one where he was on deck and a Russian cruiser went by almost as close as the one in the video, to where they could see all the guns on the ship aimed at theirs. When he said everything he emphasized that it was pretty literal, their deck was filled with sailors pointing machine guns at their ship yelling, and when they got their closest they opened their torpedo hatches. All of this while the Russian ship was leaving the port that they were heading into(yea they went out of their way to get right up to our ship lol). Not that my grandpa didn't say that we didn't do stuff like that either.
One short funny story being that his captain was getting sick of "fishing boats" that were obviously spy ships tailing them, so when one of them failed to get out of the way when their destroyer was heading in it's direction his captain told the crew to "Run him over!", the little fishing boat barely getting out of the way before it almost capsized from the wake of the destroyer.
That's too funny! It's the little ship that could :D

By the way, weren't we with you when we attacked Libya?
stealthbiker45 Yes, the Uss Caron was on station with us and the USS Saratoga (CV-60), We had T-shirts made that said " I crossed the line of death".
After President Reagan announced the attack on Libya, a reporter asked if he thought the attack would curtail Libya’s terrorism.
“Have you ever heard the sound of a 16-inch cannon?” asked Reagan, as he smiled and walked away.
Jeffrey Harrison "have you heard a 16" cannon?" thats some funny shit right there. That whole ordeal was pretty cool, President Reagan called our ship and thanked us for the intel that we gathered and all that good stuff. We had those MIGs come after us until our F-16's escorted them off - aww the good ol days
stealthbiker45 lol. The sound of a broadside is like sitting under a trashcan and then having someone with a sledgehammer hit the can with all his strength. It makes every bone in your body vibrate.
That situation was intense, but fun. I still wish the battleships were still in use. Replace the old steam boilers with nuclear reactors to cut down on operating costs and you would have the ultimate ship.
It sure is nice talking to an old sailor that remembers the good old days. I hardly relate to any of todays sailors. This might sound sexist, but women and men on a ship together just does not work to well, it just causes more problems all around.
P.S. Thanks for the video, it was great to watch. I wish I had video of the Iowa, when I was aboard her, but all I had was a Polaroid camera.

Fake. WoWS taught me that when enemy vessel rams you, both vessels explode.
True🤣
Fking 1/4 speed touch just end a whole thing
Proceed to tap the enemy ship at 0.55 kts, and you get a explosion.
You get what you see. WoW is a game. No real life. There has been a lot of collisions between ships that there was no explosion. A destroyer bow is in the Atlantic after being hit by a cargo ship. The USS Wisconsin has part of the bow from the USS Kentucky after a collision in the 50s. These were direct hits. Not glancing blows. It's not uncommon for ships to collide when doing replenishment. It's also not uncommon for ships to bump in ports when they're tied together. Tugs always collide when they push ships around the harbor. It's nothing more than what you see in the video.

In order for the russians to behave this way I'm pretty sure the american vessel was in their territorial waters, and the only means authorized and reasonable was to give a none violent push to the americans to go away, that's the only logical thing that can be apply here.
I'm not trying to call you a liar now I'm not trying to piss anybody off but it does seem a bit ridiculous and irrational to ram a ship with another ship just because they're in your waters it would make more sense to take other actions cuz its just stupid when you can fire a couple of warning shots that hardly cost anything at all instead of intentionally damaging your boat to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to not really do anything at all I like I said I will I was just a kid when this took place so I don't know I was just trying to point out a bit of logic here
The Russian version of Back in the USSR. Awesome.
As an old US replenishment ship officer this looks like an approach for replenishment gone bad! Aboard the USS Wichita (AOR-1) circa 1972 we encountered a few Russian ships in the Indian ocean but they kept their distance 4-5,000 yards but were smoking black excessively. Must have had bad oil or bad combustion control.
Why is the United States in the Black Sea?
try to make war/ to infiltrate some CIA agents normal stuff :)
The compass was broken and the American sailors lost their way)))
Because we're allowed to be.
Why swim to the Russians and tease them? America is the empire of evil?
Because we're terrorist
The US ship didn't seem to budge a bit.
Because it was made in America. Don't fuck with Americas shit.
;)
+joey hill Because Russian corvette didn't want to break it apart, and besides. order was, firstly, just to touch american bucket to show that Russians are not joking. Second hit was heavier and Russian corvette smashed board fence, saving boat, and saving boat davit. And besides that Russian corvette of Mirka class. It has displacement just 960 tons while american destroyer is 8000 tons - 8 times heavier. Though Russian ships kicked them out of those waters. After Russian strikes american ships ran away from there.
I don't know that we 'ran away' but I am sure we left the area ;)
what do you expect, its a small anti ship corvette vs a enourmous guided missile destroyer
I did this with my bike's front wheel to my friend's rear wheel. The most embarrassing bike crash ever.
Ha! Same here. I totally deserved the wipe out. It was so funny, it ended the little spat that inspired it in the first place. Simpler times.
Is that code for gay?
The Beatles "Back in the USSR" in Russian is genius. Way to go boys.
Seems to me they did more damage to themselves through that "maneuver"
For a moment there I thought the Americans were going to have to help them disengage. It seemed like they got stuck.
THEY DID HAD 3 TIMES SMALLER SHIP LOL BUT THEM BALLS 10 TIMES BIGEER JUST GOING FOR IT BIG RESPECT FOR RUS MARINES :D
They were very close to the screw guard.
Cpl. Gadway USMC x
Not really.
When I was on the USS MOALE DD-693 we had the same thing happen, but our Captain had us dump trash over our side and the Russian ship immediately pulled away from us.
if someone was on board during ram they get injured or killed. If soviet doesn't ram you then because they surprised that your captain almost kill his sailors by this order.
But most likely you just lie.
You know it’s 80’s when 1. You have really bad camera quality, and 2. Some classic rock
We need to bring the 80’s back

Да, 3 годика всего-то оставалось до 91-го :))))
That's what happens when you try to ram a ship that is 8 times larger than yours.
I was the navigator plotting the Uss Caron's course and making entries into the ships log at the time of the incident. What a Great ship and crew. GO NAVY......
Ray Weiss For real?
Hahaha all that stress went straight to those props. You can see them broken. What a "rooster tail".
awkward moment when the caron didn't even move and the russian ship almost fell over
Lol. It's not frigate. It's more ship of corvette class, even smaller. It even didn't have name, only abbreviation SKR-6(project 35). Its displacement is only 1140 tons. Caron's displacement is 8040 tons. So, american ship was almost 8 times heavier. But who cares. Russian ship damaged boat davit and destroyed saving boat on forage. Russians showed that they were not joking and their intention was serious. Could be even ramming. That's russian style to attack in any case and they fulfill their task. Americans shitted in their pants and retreated.
Try to find video where another russian ship, frigate "Bezzavetny" is ramming USS "Yorktown". "Bezzavetny" was only 3 times lighter than "Yorktown" (3200 tons against 9600). You'll see that results of that ramming were much much more dramatic for americans. Maybe that's reason why publisher has not included video with "Bezzavetny" ramming in this clip.
Александр Чернов actually there is a link to that ramming in the description section - nice try - as for this ship causing any damage at all to the USS Caron, it took maybe 30 minutes to paint the chip and let it dry, as apposed to the broken propellor shaft and the damage to the Russian ship
Александр Чернов actually I don't lie, just curious as to where you were when this happened?
stealthbiker45 I was at school. But there are lots of materials available in Russia regarding that event. And many participants gave reports and interviews. You just see one source of info. or desinfo to be more exact. So, you can't compare different point of views, and you don't want to. You don't want to check facts and documents, you just transmit words from your TV, which shows only american channels.

The Caron was in the Black Sea when she was still relatively new. I was riding the Farragut (DDG-37) in October-November 79. That trip we had the spooks. I’m not sure if the Caron also had a NSA detachment aboard. Black Sea operations are a normal thing for the USN and have been for many years. That was a very pleasant experience after some of the other places we had been. The Soviet spy vessels followed us the whole time.
yea we had spooks as well and the Snoopy team. it was a hoot
I was serving onboard her from Jan 81 to May 84, my first med we pulled into Constanta Romania.
With pampers on i guess. Sofa fighters.
Simular things were happening in the 70s as well. With the same type of Soviet Ships. These Corvette types use to sail along side our LST and point the guns at us. I was watching the crew with some binos that I had and noticed that they were looking back at me, so I waved at them and they waved back. Some guy came down from their bridge and chewed the guy out, and the same thing happened to us too. Strange that the Cold War affected people at sea too. The USN got tired of it, and dispatched some jets to buzz them, and eventually they stayed away. We were trailed by trawlers as well.
Молодцы ребята.
This is a fail when it comes to the Pitt maneuver.
it was supposed to change their course not rip a hole in to the ship.
Neurofied Yamato Yes mam you are right. I was joking
забыли показать как потом убегали
Ага и как штаны сушили 🤣🤣🤣
80's USN was a whole vibe. When i enlisted in '99 there was still Dungarees in the fleet, but we were in utilities. Utilities sucked. But dungarees looked straight up comfortable. Chicks wearing dungarees was a vibe too, damn shame we let that go.
I tried doing this in cold waters, it wasn’t really affective at all
