Yeah, I don’t even like CS, but you’re wrong on it not being a classic. That game had millions of players worldwide before skins and all the predatory gambling bs. It was just way less popular in the US, because you people spent the 00s playing Halo & CoD on consoles, meanwhile almost everywhere else gamed mostly on PCs and CS was about as popular as football (not the handegg type) across the ocean.
@todesziege that is just not true, it is only a extremely minute population that plays the game because of skins. 99% of players are playing because of the gameplay.
@@gaigerobinson1908 People don't have to play it _exclusively_ for skins for it to still be a factor. It's not just what games you play, but how often, what modes etc.
Games like r6 and cs would still be in top 100 even if you removed skins from these games. The reason is that they have good gameplay and skins a very small part of it. These games rely on competitive nature of people.
not to mention most of these other classics see more gameplay updates than cs sees new cosmetics i swear they release some new skins like every 2 years meanwhile games like cod are just pumping out weekly cosmetics. ofcourse skins are a big part of cs now but its quality over quantity in their case they somehow stumbled into the perfect way of introducing cosmetics into their game. and like 99% of the degens gambling with the skins don't even touch the game itself they just use it as a tax free way of gambling.
One thing that also keeps indie games like terraria, binding of isaac and stardew valley so high is that they have very low processing power requirements, which is very appealing for those who can't afford expensive systems to play AAA games.
For me, I keep going back to them because I have to uninstall the huge games to play another huge game. I can always keep Terraria, Stardew Valley, etc installed with no problem so they're kind of evergreen for what to play day by day
What really needs to be analyzed is the Roblox top player chart. It’s wild. The top one has like a million, the second top will have like half of that and by the time you get to number 6 it struggles to get over 100k. It’s very similar to steams actually but the drop off is more dramatic. Also the actually fun games like phantom forces get beat out by slop games
Me when the game that was made in probably 2 days where the only features are roleplaying, character customization and spawnable vehicles has over 600k active players while the genuinely good and playable games that don't include mincrotransactions or mindless gambling have 70 players in a good day
Roblox is the biggest source of whiplash ever, you have slop like Blox Fruit, Sol's RNG and Fisch (now that the dev sold the game i can officially call it a cashgrab) beating out well put together experiences of various genres, Frontlines, Block Tales, Need More Heat, Pressure etc with a clear amount of effort and love poured in day after day
@@TonyExists Roblox often gets ragged on for being a ton of slop and in fairness i don't blame the people who take one look at it and assume that's all it is, but there is some really good diamonds in the rough on there. Most of the good games on roblox that i've found was from seeing other people play them, NEVER by scrolling on the games tab (Or "experiences" as they're called now).
Deep Rock Galactic has one of the best battlepasses I've seen, since you can play any battlepass that was released from the very beginning, they have only cosmetics and skins and after the battlepass is over, all the items are transferred to the ingame store that are available only for the ingame currency and chests that are frequently found within game. The only DLC's for the game are founders packs, dropped very infrequently which are direct ways to support the game in exchange for some higher quality skin sets.

4:00 I think using plat from Warframe to depict the negative connotation of premium currency is really bad, it's literally the only "premium currency" that's earnable and tradeable. I m not talking about 10 dollar worth for grinding a year like some other but actually 50-100 dollar worth every couple days. Within community it's not even considered a premium currency but rather a universal currency.
@@iAmLufa Those 20 hours barely scratched the surface. Did you join a clan? Did you trade your items you got in missions for platinum to other players? Did you even open up any void relics to get prime parts to trade? Those are the most sought after ones. You can get enough prime parts in an hour to trade for about $5-10 worth of plat to another player. More if you're lucky. What about corrupted mods from Deimos missions using the Dragon Keys? Those go for about 5-10p each and you can literally get one every 90 seconds if you use a fast frame like volt or titania. I've got 3k hours over roughly 7 years in Warframe and there's absolutely zero instances in which I felt like the monetization was predatory or scummy ever. It's the gold standard for what games that you called "titans" should do, but won't because it's not as profitable. It player-centric. Hell, I spend money on WF as a thank you to the devs for the countless hours of fun and free content because I feel bad getting all that I do for free. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean that the whole game is bad. Frankly, it's better than most of the games in the top 100 but most people drop the game before they learn enough about it to really see all it has to offer, like yourself.
I know of a game with an actually good battle pass design: deep rock galactic; the battle pass is free, with no paid tiers, when the "season" ends you can choose to replay that season and battle pass whenever you want. The "replay season" feature is somewhat new, before that, the loot would simply go to the random loot pool. Everything in the battle pass is cosmetic. The paid dlcs are also only cosmetics, generally with a specific theme related to the current season, and you get everything upon purchase.
Sucks to see that warframe wasn't mentioned as a classic cuz in my opinion it checks all the boxes that a classic game has. It has devs that listen to their players and also interact with them, all of the content is free except for skins that are made by the community where profits from them go into creators pockets (from how I understand it), it is a singleplayer/co-op game, you can buy premium currency but it serves more as a donation to devs rather than a necessity to make progress + it can be earned for free through trading where the market isn't controlled by devs but by players and it has a welcoming community. In early stages of the game it may feel undewhelming when there is not a lot of things that boost your dopamine except for world building but when players stick with it they are rewarded with experience and freedom that no other game offers. And once you complete all quests and every mission you unlock steel path which is basically a new game+ where you do all missions again but with more difficult enemies. It also has characters each with unique kits and gunplay is phenomenal. Certainly a game which stood a test of time without implementing predatory strategies and keeps their playerbase by updates and dev streams where they also give away premium currency. Sorry for a lenghty comment and if you managed to get to the end of it thank you for reading my tedtalk ^^ (english is my second language so sorry for any grammar errors)
While the devs have gotten a little... odd in recent times, they surely supported the game fully for longer than most of the "classics" even existed. Most people don't even know it's been over a decade since the first version of the game. And it almost always got better than the way it was. Not to mention you don't need to even pay a penny to get premium currency if you really like the game and play it regularly.
The amount of bots in cs is crazy. At night it'll say 400k players online but when I search for a match it literally tells me only 5 people are searching for a match in my region.
@@JardTheRat the bots don't make up a huge percentage of the playercount. since bots don't sleep there at least under 400k bots and you can subtract the peak by 400k to get 1.2 million for the peak player count. I highly doubt that a game with that high of a peak has more than around 50k bots.
@@skoop4477 even if its 50k that is still is a lot. every deathmatch has at least 5 bot accounts spinning around afk with aim hacks farming its ridiculous
Can Battle passes be harmless? YES! And one of the longest running top 100 games that you overlooked does it. Warframe. Their battle pass is called Nightwave. It features zero purchasable micro transactions, you literally cannot buy your way through it or to get more stuff. It also backlogs the entire battle passes missions, so if you don't feel like playing one week, all those weekly missions will still be available until after the battle pass ends. The battle pass lasts between 4 to 6 months, but can be completed in less than 1 by a dedicated player. It offers prestige levels after that earn you currency to buy stuff in an associated shop that is has other cosmetics and a handful of resources. If you skipped an entire battle pass, everything in the pass will either return at a later date, is available by other means, or can be traded between players, reducing the feeling of FOMO that everyone associates with battlepasses. And again, this is all without even giving you the option of spending on it.
The game in the top100 that I play most is Geometry Dash. I have hundreds of replays of it on my channel and I just can't stop playing it. When I watched your video I tried to fit it into the categories you listed, and found it difficult to place it. The thing about GD is that the official game itself doesn't really have much content. At its core it is just a random mobile game from the early 2010s that got popular randomly. It is developed by one guy called Robert and doesn't have in-game-purchases. It only costs like 4$ and Robert took 7 years to release the recent update. So how is it in the top100 then? Well I think it isn't for the same reasons another "Classic" like Stardew is up there. The gameplay is similar to little rage games like the Impossible Game and is really really challenging. What really drives its playercount is the community, how else could it have gone 7 years without an update? The level editor in this game is probably the most open for creativity, unlike others, which has led the community to create over 30k dev-approved levels. Basically, infinite content. If I were to make a category for it, i'd call it "community-driven" Funny thing, during the update drought the player count only grew and didn't decline
Yeah I think we need another category for UGC (user generated content games) where most of the content is provided by user generated stuff. Think Fortnite (creative) Roblox, vr chat, raven field, basically any paradox game with a popular modding scene, tabs, tf2, and more. They can all go into some category (mainly titans and classics) but the games mainly thrive off ugc from either modding, or through a creation area made by the dev.
Hey same, GD is like the perfect game to me. Its also all I upload 😭 You can challenge yourself practically infinitely and at your own pace, and the community is extremely active given its size, I can't really see any issues in the game at all unlike almost everything else I play.
Great video! I would have mentioned also that bots can inflate numbers a lot. Games that are bounded to some kind of earning are naturally flooded with bots, skin and hats were/are/will be farmed with bots alongside human players. I can't believe that many people are clicking bananas, a big chunk must be bots.
Ignoring the obvious fact that competitive multiplayer games have infinitely more replayability than solo games by design is not helping your argument. I fully agree with what you are saying but really dislike this kind of omission of causal effects to tunnelvision on a single narrative, because it serves no purpose other than to provide an extremely easy refutation of your entire point.
@@rbze7255 yeah of course, point is many players aren’t coming back for replayability. They return because of incentives outside of gameplay. That might not be the dominate reason why for everybody, but there’s certainly been a trend
I feel like titans explanation is missing the point that those games have become inherently massively competitive. If you’re a rank gamer who likes a competitive scene then those games are probably for you. Same with fighting games, the gameplay is a big part of it but the dopamine is from conquering your opponent. Being the best or seeing the victory/KO screen. Not just skins like you’re pointing out solely.
This is where the divide seems to happen where A LOT of people become burned out and just don’t like the competitive scene. Which is fine lmao. Whenever I get tired of R6, The Finals, Marvel Rivals, or Apex I hop on BG3 and do another run. Maybe I’ll download mods for Skyrim and do a run of that. Skins is a part of it but it’s really not the main reason people play those games.
@@julianbrown4371 I agree, I feel like this guy’s entire argument doesn’t really make any sense at all. The “classic game” analogy he uses doesn’t work because that’s simply not what “classic” means, he instead should have explained why the games he liked in the top 100 were instead classics to HIM and Reiterate his own opinions instead of treating his views as objective. Also Multiple points he made to further his argument didn’t make much sense either, he stated that cosmetics and seasons are the only reason those games are consistently in the top 100, which in itself is incorrect. The competitive scene alone in those games makes them huge and those “seasons” often come with a lot of content to accompany any cosmetics. That introduces new players and keeps player counts high. That’s how live service games work. He can’t reinvent the term “classic” as a roundabout way of trashing on games HE doesn’t like, along with literally lying about what makes the games he doesn’t like popular.
warframe being not mentioned besides being used as the icon for premium currency is an absolute disgrace. Warframe is the perfect example of how an online/live service game CAN be a classic.
This guy made a lot of generalizations. Warframe, and Helldivers 2 (which he also didnt mention) went unmentioned because they counter his argument so blatantly.
Warframe makes you wait 3 days to craft components of an item so you can wait 3 more days using that component to craft a warframe or a weapon. Even though you can trade items with other players to get the premium currency, someone somewhere has to buy it first to get it into circulation. All that waiting and getting items through obscenely random chance is mainly there to entice you to give in and use the premium currency. At the end of the day, nothing but cosmetics are behind a true paywall. Warframe is a titan done well enough.
This guy thinks monetization makes a game bad by default and worships stardew valley like its his wife's bull like yeah man im sure stardew valley has more mechanical depth than dota 2
You should do the most popular games on consoles too. Xbox has some interesting ones that show the demographics of the console well, it’s available online for anyone interested.
This was a lot more deep than I was expecting. Before even watching this video I recently realized I wasn’t going to play games just for gaming sake and now I realize what the underlying thing holding me back was: feeling the time pressure to crank game hours for “exclusive” cosmetics that at the end of the day you couldn’t even touch, smell, or feel
no matter how much better THE FINALS' monetization actually is, people look at it and can't tell the difference. WTF. The only ethically monetized F2P FPS on the market and all it gets in this video is a picture of the currency exchange, never mind the massive innovations it brings to the genre. People ARE in the finals for the gameplay, not the cherry on top cosmetics.
i guess one other reason why certain indie games are successful is because they don't use any voice acting, so they can export to many countries much easier.

Played over 3,500 hours in tf2. Had a friend who was over 10,000 hours. Played 3,000 hours of Binding of Isaac between the original flash game for almost 1,000, and over 2,000 in the remake. 700 hours in Age of Empires 2 700 hours in Don't Starve. Over 100 hours in just Half-Life, replaying it over and over. Thousands of hours in Final Fantasy games, between discs and at least 1,000 hours on Steam.
It's interesting how the classics are also the games where you can easily change things up with mods and etc if you feel they're lacking, whereas the titans get you banned for modding or make it unnecessarily difficult
i agree with most of the things you say in this video, however for the titan games like cs2, fortnite, and others, i would say battle passes and microtransactions are not the reason people play the games, me and my friends have tons of hours in both cs2 and fortnite but rarely wasted money in the game for cosmetics, we play them for the gameplay and mechanics of the game, and because of the big competitive community surrounding those games, maybe the more casual players play the game for that reason? Your correct about new seasons / maps in the games tho, the new content makes it so that people stick to playing the game therefore making it more adictive.
Honestly insightful video, I play steam games but also non-steam games (like Valorant, Osu! and etc), and some do apply the ''playing the game for quests/daily rewards'' and it made me think about it. Great vid tho
I think you forgot a 5th category "ethical titans". Helldivers 2, warframe and deep rock galatic come to mind. The communities of these games are so friendly, that the community itself becomes its biggest selling point.
In my case it suprise me to see, for example, 200 players in games like Space Marine 1 or 500 in the original Resident Evil 4, there is at least ten players, right now, somewhere in the world playing a specific game.
Counter Strike was a huge game before skins arrived and buying or unlocking skins is verrrrry rare. I dont believe the skins are nearly as influential in the the success of CS2 as the ESports scene of the game.
cs is for sure a classic. you can't even really use the they have skins argument cus they release a new set of skins like once every year sometimes even longer. cs2 from its release until like a year later pretty much got no cosmetic content or any new content in general but it was still gaining players throughout that period. that being said they have still have by far the best incorperation of cosmetics and its interesting to see how deep it goes.

I think, personally, it is the psychology of addiction and the framework of a casino presented in a faux-personalized empty box. The concept of gambling and slot machines have been hurting us for longer than video games have existed. Long before. Gambling has followed us for a long time.
We need more games that make us think and actually stay intelligent sentient people. Also I saw this game in my recommended and knew it was something I wanted to watch, why is the algorithm acting up?
Age of Empires 4, Civilization 6(7 on the way soon), Your Only Move Is Hustle, literally any classic fighting game because fighting games are more about mental stack than people realize. Hunt Showdown is more about outsmarting people than having god aim because the win condition isn't kill everyone. XCOM 2 (without save scumming), Portal 2 (and billions of workshop maps), literally any version of Tetris... the list goes on and most of these are modern titles. It's not like people stopped making games that provide a mental challenge. But if your purpose to play them is to feel smart and rub yourself to the idea, you may very well not be as intelligent as you would want to believe.
I will say on the battlepass point, I really like how R6 handles its pass. It lasts like 2.5 months and I get 4 or 5 levels of the 100 needed out of a couple hours of playing with friends. I can drop the game for 2 weeks mid pass and still finish it without actually trying to. R6 has an absolute legendary amount of issues, but they handle their battlepass much better than a lot of games. The Helldivers 2 passes being accessible no matter how long ago it came out is how all passes *should* be handled, but R6 is pretty good too.
The tactic that banana game uses is called variable reward and it has been observed in mammals as the most addictive behaviour reinforcer. It is also used in many mobile apps and gambling games. I am an app developer and you wont believe the kind of things/tactics they are using to keep you engaged.

Honestly amazing commentary, would love to see more like this. Some of the points made in this video made me think of why I love The Finals (which I think is #93 on the list). It's such a fun game and while it has a battlepass and cosmetics, they are really not as scummy or bad as other games. Ok, good video bye!
something thats even worse is when epic back in 2017 told their players "oh all items from the season shop are exclusive limited time items that will not be available after so and so" and makes the people level up and then spend money to buy them, then bring them back 7 years later, completely ignoring what they said about exclusivity only bc they know all the timmys want the skins, and then again forces people to get 2 MILLION xp to unlock the items to again have to be purchased after that JUST bc its an easy money grab
one thing about a lot of the top few games is that they are free and only require you to pay when you want cosmetics and not sitting behind a 30-100 dollar pay wall before you even try the game
6:00 unexpected C&C 1 - nice! On a more serious note a healthy way to deal with DLCs and cosmetics and all that is not looking at it as an investment. If I spend money on such things, I accept that the money is just gone. It's like going to see a movie or concert; you pay for the ticket, you get entertainment in return, and that is it. It's not invested, it's money spent for some entertainment, and it's gone as soon as it is spent. Break the false sunk cost fallacy and just see these things as entertainment.
The thing about the "classic" games being less played than "titan" games is that only gamers play the "classics" while "titan" games are being played by both gamers and casual players, usually after work to "relax". And yea all the events and skins in these games most likely also play a role. And for "clickers".......... Well at least cookie clicker seems cool but damn if Banana already works so well, things might get weird in the gaming industry.
i'm pretty sure that even if you take out the skins and the other stuff out of cs2 it will still probably be in the top 10 must played games. same goes for tf2, which is an absolute classic, never bought anything, and played that for years.
Cosmetics for ranked modes is a great thing. It doesn't affect gameplay and gives incentives for players to enter the playlist who otherwise wouldn't, and a larger playerbase benifits everyone in said playlist. In Destiny for example we're always wanting Bungie to add more earnable loot(in contrast to the cash shop, Eververse which is always constantly supplied with new stuff) especially in endgame pvp activities like comp and Trials to reward the most skilled and dedicated players and get more into the playlists themselves. Cosmetics are perfect because Bungie tried putting the best most powerful pvp loot into high comp ranks and it failed miserably. It allowed the already best players to get guns that make them even better where they then faced others in the playlist trying to get the same weapon but weren't able to as it both killed faster and was eaiser to use then anything else available, making it impossible for more casual and lesser skilled players to obtain them. I'm talking about the Luna's Howl and Not Forgotten of course, then Mountintop and later the Recluse and those 2 were also the best pve weapons as well meaning pve only players had to try and suffer through it to get them. That's when it was really a problem because if you wanted to be efficient in pve, you HAD to win in comp against ppl who were both better and already had those weapons. So cosmetics are the perfect compromise and weapons with slightly better stats. You don't need a cosmetic and it doesn't effect gameplay but it incentivises ppl to try if they like how it looks and rewards the best in the game for their time. Cosmetics in ranked is NEVER a bad thing and that's an extremely out of touch take to think it is. Everyone doesn't deserve everything in a game, even if they paid for it. You're paying for access to the game, not to have everything just handed to you, that's a microtransaction instant gratification mindset.
A lot of games nowadays feel like both a time and money investment, "I bought the battlepass so I need to grind to complete it even though it isn't really fun, I just don't want to waste the money and time I've invested"
Why did you use Warframes platinum as a picture when saying "premium currency"? Platinum in Warframe is the most NON premium currency in all of premium currencies. You can get platinum FOR FREE, by trading items FOR platinum, by just playing the game and getting MISSION REWARDS... In every other game getting premium currency for free is either a bad weekly reward, or a rare reward for completing their stupid battlepass.
I think project zomboid is an amazing representation of your classics idea, the community waited relatively patiently for years for build 42 when it came out despite the update being the culmination of a 5 year lovechild for the indiestone they were completely open to suggestions for change, the simplest example the addition of an option in sandbox to turn off musclestrain (one controversial element) that kind of attention to community is why I think classics are so successful, I mean what other games could go without updates for YEARS and still retain popularity. Who’d a thunk that making good game + listening to your consumer = better product

It's not the CS 1.6 days anymore. Since CS:GO it has relied a lot more on extrinsic motivations.
Me when the game that was made in probably 2 days where the only features are roleplaying, character customization and spawnable vehicles has over 600k active players while the genuinely good and playable games that don't include mincrotransactions or mindless gambling have 70 players in a good day
Roblox is the biggest source of whiplash ever, you have slop like Blox Fruit, Sol's RNG and Fisch (now that the dev sold the game i can officially call it a cashgrab) beating out well put together experiences of various genres, Frontlines, Block Tales, Need More Heat, Pressure etc with a clear amount of effort and love poured in day after day
@@TonyExists Exactly my thoughts

They actually changed it so when a battle pass is it over you can manually go back to that season and do any battle passes you missed.

Damn I forgot how well Deep Rock Galactic handled their monetization. One if the few games that I willingly spent a little money in.
Rock and Stone!!!!!! Man I love that game everything about it was so masterfully done.
Not to mention you don't need to even pay a penny to get premium currency if you really like the game and play it regularly.
you didn't mention the amount of bots that idle for items that alone makes the player count so much bigger
I got ahead of myself there. Good point

3 Words:
Rock and Stone
If I were to make a category for it, i'd call it "community-driven"
Funny thing, during the update drought the player count only grew and didn't decline
I’d consider it a classic
i mean people play it because it's fun the fact that the content is user-made doesn't change that
Yeah I think we need another category for UGC (user generated content games) where most of the content is provided by user generated stuff.
I remember my GD arc 🙏
Great video! I would have mentioned also that bots can inflate numbers a lot. Games that are bounded to some kind of earning are naturally flooded with bots, skin and hats were/are/will be farmed with bots alongside human players. I can't believe that many people are clicking bananas, a big chunk must be bots.
I think we can all agree this channel qualifies as a Classic. Great video.
Thank you :D
The “classic game” analogy he uses doesn’t work because that’s simply not what “classic” means, he instead should have explained why the games he liked in the top 100 were instead classics to HIM and
Reiterate his own opinions instead of treating his views as objective.

This is the most insightful analysis of Steam, and modern gaming in general, that I've ever seen.
Played over 3,500 hours in tf2. Had a friend who was over 10,000 hours.
Played 3,000 hours of Binding of Isaac between the original flash game for almost 1,000, and over 2,000 in the remake.
700 hours in Age of Empires 2
700 hours in Don't Starve.
The thing about TF2 is that cosms and paid stuff actually went down for like 2 weeks in the summer and nobody cared
"Late for supper." Don't think for a second that I'm not gonna steal THAT one. 🤓

You're paying for access to the game, not to have everything just handed to you, that's a microtransaction instant gratification mindset.
if you like doom you gotta play ultrakill. it has a much higher skill ceiling.
I'm just playing my BattleBlock Theater and Slime Rancher in peace
(They're both underated gems, you should do a video on some of those next.)
factorio spotted
A lot of games nowadays feel like both a time and money investment, "I bought the battlepass so I need to grind to complete it even though it isn't really fun, I just don't want to waste the money and time I've invested"
anybody know the song that plays at 1:32
You using the coolest meme of my childhood regarding the topic of the banana is so sardonic xd
😮 I expected a million views but only 1000? Crazy underrated
Thank you!!!
cs2 is pretty good ngl
Unpopular opinion, goated game.
Idk why people trash on it. I love cs2 even though I'm really bad at it
@@NedInYaHead wdym unpopular opinion 💀
I think project zomboid is an amazing representation of your classics idea, the community waited relatively patiently for years for build 42 when it came out despite the update being the culmination of a 5 year lovechild for the indiestone they were completely open to suggestions for change, the simplest example the addition of an option in sandbox to turn off musclestrain (one controversial element) that kind of attention to community is why I think classics are so successful, I mean what other games could go without updates for YEARS and still retain popularity. Who’d a thunk that making good game + listening to your consumer = better product
The game is already top 30 and doesnt even have a propely functional multiplayer yet. Now imagine the numbers when 50k daily solo survivors will get easy acces to join and create servers
Counter strike is in my library and I’ve never bought, played or even looked at it once. Steam gives it out for free hoping to get kids addicted to gambling.
