Cave Story: The Story of Daisuke Amaya (Pixel)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 мар 2018
- The story of Daisuke Amaya, better known as Pixel, is an interesting one. Over the course of five years, he created the game that we all now know as Cave Story, and he did it all while working in his spare time, around his more pressing concerns of education and employment.
Cave Story seems to come up very regularly in these videos - plenty of game developers and artists (such as Temmie Chang of Undertale fame and Satchely from Doki Doki Literature Club) list the Dokutsu Monogatari (as it's known in Japanese) as one of their big inspirations.
Perhaps it's the game's history as freeware, or maybe it's just because Cave Story kicked off (more or less) the ongoing retro renaissance of games that are designed to look and feel like they were invented in a different era.
Regardless, it's impressive just how hard Pixel worked on Cave Story, and what he put into making it completely perfect. He even scrapped an entire original version of the game (now known as Cave Story Beta among enthusiasts) along his way to making the finished version of Cave Story.
There's also the story of Cave Story+ and Cave Story 3D, but we'll dive into those at a later date if you guys seem interested in them.
Indie game development stories like this one are always the most interesting. It's fine when a big studio makes a noteworthy game (one of those is coming in a few weeks that should please Zelda fans), but when it's just one or two developers working hard on a passion project, the entire development experience seems so much more intriguing.
Daisuke Amaya is a perfect example of this, because he never even intended to make money from his game, and once it was finished, he moved on to different projects without really thinking too much about game design for a while.
Cave Story was a success to Pixel because he'd made the game he wanted to make, and he was pleased with it. There's a nice lesson there for budding creatives in many fields - if you're having fun, then that's what matters most.
Have a great week, guys!

Metroid was too harsh, he wanted CS to be cute and fun
meanwhile, bloodstained sanctuary
Ikr, that thing is the hardest thing I could think of the beat.
There is one thing that really astonishes me: When looking at successful games made by one person, they are often really good at making music themselves. That's a bit discouraging since I have no experience with music.
Time to learn a new skill, then! :D
Sadly I don't have the time for that. I barely find the time to work on my own game project. BUT, I know someone who is great at making music. If my game reaches a point where I think it's "ready enough" I may ask her if she's interested in helping out. After all, a good team of two can get twice as far.
I have a friend who is very interested in music and when he started producing he was pretty bad, but by practicing and looking some short guides online he now makes pretty good songs and gets better every day, the most important part is practice
pixel had no real experience with music either
Wait a second, Lugmillord? SM74 guy? Didn’t expect to see you here!
Cave story was great and I loved the story thanks for doing a story about it

I was really hoping you'd cover Cave Story one day, and you did not disappoint! Thank you for making this, it's very inspirational.
I swear you've commented on at least half of all Cave Story related videos.
Huzzah!
I swear, you guys have a weird tendency to post these when I could really use them ._. In this particular case, I had just been struggling with my own game dev attempts (as well as the serious load of emotional muck life has heaped on me lately), so this was just the boost I needed. It was particularly inspiring to hear that Daisuke Amaya had limited art skills, since that's a problem I find myself struggling with a LOT in figuring out my own projects - largely in that I can't figure out how to draw/animate action poses to save my life (as well as a lot of struggles with perspective). It gives me hope that I can find some way to work with my limitations that I'll be satisfied with in the end :)
Giggle tail went on to make a hit indie game 4 years aftervthus comment.
cave story deserves more love, as much as any indie game receives nowadays, something like undertale, or even better!
Such an amazing story. I still love Cave Story to this day. I remember being so amazed that this game was made available over the internet for free. From watching this video it helps me to see all of the hard work that went into it. I especially like how he stuck to his roots and didn't drop a price tag on the game at the last second before it was released.
I am so happy you made this. Cave Story is one of those indie games with a nice and interesting development story, with it being a one man from the ground up project. May I dare to ask for the story of Oneshot or Dwarf Fortress? I know those games aren't mainstream or anything, but the developers are pretty fascinating people and I think it would fit the really beautiful and uplifting style you are going for. Thank you so much for your hard work.
YES! Been waiting forever for you to cover Cave Story!
Quote, Heyy! How have you been.
Psst, by the way, Bluecore, your Amy trailer is awesome. We've written a video that mentions it that'll go up later this week :)
Video Game Story Time, Oh wow, I'm honored!! I can't wait to watch it. =)
I started playing Cave Story like 2 days ago. great timing.
Remember to do the other endings :), don't give up

Cave Story is my most favorite game of all time. It inspires me to make my own game amazing!
It’s nice to hear that the person that made my favorite game came from such humble origins
One of my favorite games of all time. It helped me through quite a difficult time in my life. I grew way more attached to the characters than I had originally thought I would. Absolutely adore everything about this game. Thank you for a bit more backstory on the development of this game. I enjoyed it a lot.
Cave Story and Yume Nikki:
both released in 2004
both IMPORTANT.
I finaly completed the hidden good route today, and i get a video about Pixel, this is a great day.
Yes! A video about Cave Story! I've been hoping for this! Cave Story is one of my favourite games tbh
He really feels like a great example to me. Thank you for making this!
Once again, excellent video!
Cave Story is one of those games where something calls you to play it for yourself when you hear about it.
What an amazing video. Thank you for covering one of my favorite video games. Makes be happy to get more back story on Pixel
all i'm gonna say that props to the friend who gave harsh criticism, most people are too afraid to say what's in their mind
I can't say it enough. I love you guys. Thank you for these videos. :)
I haven't even started this video, and I just want to say I've been waiting for this one for ages. Thank you!
~ Hunter
I need to play this game...
Anyway, this was a good story. I often feel bogged down by all of my work, projects, and personal development goals, and to be honest it seems overwhelming, but this gives me hope that I can accomplish what I've set out to do, no matter how long it takes. Thanks for another great video!
It's surprisngly fun, starts very basic, but soon you start to expand your arsenal and movement options and the game gets wild
As I was watching this, I decided to get Cavestory.
Thanks for introducing me to such creative games!
This excellent channel deserves far more subscribers.
I adore this channel!! The story telling is lovely and the art is cute. :3 great video!
I have never heard of this, but this is really cool! I should probably try this sometime if it's on your channel too.
22,000 subs! Congratulations! Love your videos, forever and always. This is no exception here.
**sob**
Tis' a story.
you deserve my sub and a bell, your video is like a lively well.
A sweet tone for every quote,
A warm esthetic, smile so curly.
A humble end, videogame story.
It may not be as big as it used to be, but that game doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
Great video. loved it
"A fan of the game completed an English language translation."
Did you not namedrop the translators on purpose? They have a pretty fascinating history themselves.
I second that! It was through them that I found out about "Cave Story", "La Mulana" and "Guardian of Paradise", and also a delightful hidden gem known as "Chaos World". It's a shame because some of these fan translation groups have done a lot of work creating a groundswell for non-localized properties without asking for donations, and working very, very hard at their labor, and they hardly get as much credit as anyone else in the business, it seems. Of course, the group who translated "Cave Story" in the first place, known as Aeon Genesis, should be one of the first episodes.
It would be nice to see the history of the FanTL community cataloged. It may just be my opinion, but I think fan translation is the purist expression of love for a game.
This definitely sounds like something we need to investigate for a future second video! Thanks for the heads up!
I'm very pleased that you've listened to us. It's funny because I've been patching up all of these ROM files with their English fan translations when I ran into all of this, and I have very little knowledge on these translation groups, but I've followed the progress of the community off and on for years, and am eternally grateful to them. Thank you! Love your videos! and love learning about the people behind all of these games!
Aeon Genesis are basically THE fan-translation group. In regards to fan-translations, I'd like either a vid on them or one on RPGe.
i love this channel so much
... And then Kero Blaster happened.
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSS! THANK YOU!
This video needs a part 2 to tell the rest of the story, about Cave Story+ and the 3D version. ;)
I love your work guys!
You made this sound like a children's story book! Cute.
I loved Cave Story when I first heard of it.
It's nice seeing one of my favourite games covered
He liked games to be cute and fun
Ballos, Undead Core/Core, Rabid Mimiga, Bloodstained Sanctuary
Pixel is my all-time hero. I'm not afraid to admit that I shed a few tears while watching this, too.
not related to the subject of this video your voice reminds me of my childhood for some reason and it makes me feel good form the inside thank you I guess
What's sad is that people who don't know about this game don't even know that if Cave Story never existed we would have never gotten some of the games we've gotten over the years.
Inspiring story and nice telling of it well done
Yay, a new Video Game Story Time video!
About a year ago, i first discovered Cave Story. It was at game stop looking at new games for the switch, and there it was. While I personally wasn’t that interested, I got it for Christmas as a gift. Once I played it, I instantly fell in love with the game. I haven’t even left mimiga village and I knew, I was going to love this game. I played through the game, eventually getting to the Blood Stained Sanctuary and beating it (it took me longer than I’d like to emit). I started talking to some of my friends about the game, but they didn’t know anything about it. I eventually convinced my friend to play it. She got Cave Story 3D, and also fell in love. I amazed how great this game is, and how much effort went into it. Cave Story is what got me into indie games, like Celeste, Undertale, Stardew Vally etc. It’s one of, if not, my favorite game of all time. And while I have to emit, it’s not the BEST game in the world, it certainly is one of the more influential ones.
Maybe some time you could cover the story of ZUN? :)
YES
I'd want them to do a video on either Aeon Genesis, Nigoro or Dopterra.
Oh yes, I would love very much a video that cover both Dopterra and Creepy Castle! ^-^
YES
That was very hard not to cry when you described the scrapping process of beta cave story.
I'll take one of Reggie's _quotes:_
" If you haven't played Cave Story yet, *what's wrong with you?* "
cave story is one of my favorite games of all time
I got the game when i was five after a random choice on the DSI online shop. Did not think the game would stick around.
I am proud of my creator.
I am also pleased with the narrator voice.
I have subscribed.
Quote LanceLnc Heck yeah! Keep that sword. I'll get a new one.
I would sure love to hear if this game got a sequel for how much great reception it's getting.
It took 5 years to make an amazing game, that would be one of my favorite video games of all time
I JUST WATCHED THIS ON PIXEL'S BIRTHDAY!
Happy Birthday Daisuke Amaya!!!
yes
10:15 IS THAT CHIAKI?!?!?!?
and thus, one of the classic masterpieces of videogaming was born. the end.
Inspiring.
I kinda wonder now how Nintendo came to getting cavestory sold on their eshops. I mean I played it way back in the free ware days. But I've been more than happy to buy every version except the steam version to this day. No really I have the dsi version, both 3ds versions, the wii version and the switch version. If it came out anywhere else besides steam then those are news to me

sorry dude.
Since you use a Danganronpa character, I would love to see if you made a video about it. Love this video by the way, it makes me wanna go play Cave Story now
And then Nicalis came along, money milked it to death and pretty much claimed both the game and its characters as their own. afaik the latest versions don't even really credit him anymore
they still credit him
First indie game ever created thats why cave story is a masterpiece
It's like me as an author. I want my book series to be accepted by many people.
I love cave story
"He likes games to be cute and fun and made his characters as cute as possible"
Proceeds to create the Undead Core from the depths of hell itself
Coincidentally, I just obtained the “best” ending about 6 days ago
Great story
"We need the game to be adorable"
BALLOS IS DISPLEASED
I still have to play Kero Blaster.
Can you make the story of Pony Island and his creator, Daniel Mullins, please?
Yes
it's cool that Cavestory feels like MegaMan and Shantae combined.
10:10 Why you gotta do that to us?
But would they make one on yandere dev?
(I feel like I'm making a joke....but I haven't figured out what it is)
That's not a joke, it's a genuine suggestion. The ongoing development of Yandere Sim - and the controversy surrounding it - would indeed make for an interesting Video Game Story Time.
A videogame storytime of Cave Story?! *Insta-watch*
then how did it get on the switch?
peak
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER HE GOT MARRIED?
HOPE IT WAS HAPPY normal LIFE WITH HAPPY JOLLY KIDS
Please, could you make the story of Naramura and LaMulana?
I'm surprised you didn't mention Deceased Crab.
Can the next be Minecraft please?
I found this the same day i finally beat Ballos...
I wonder if it is was part of destiny
1:14 so his friend is Hidetaka Miyazaki?
The one dislike... makes me much angery!!!
Jokes aside, can you do a video on Edmund Mcmillen, the creator of Super Meatboy and Isaac

um, actually, pixel doesn't make these many games but he still casually releases a game or 2 sometimes, ever heard of kero blaster? you shoulda done a bit more research Edit: also, he made a game called ika chan as well so cave story wasn't the 1st game he made
