I've read several accounts all similar how Mike Lindup parents met and it's a lovely story . Something like this: near the end or just after ww2 , Mike's Afro Caribbean mother a singer/piano cabaret player came to England to entertain The British and Ally troops . His father was a white British music composer, arranger and leader of a "big band" and also entertained the aforementioned . They fell in love , begot Mike and several other children , beautiful . Mike certainly has the music in his blood from both Mum and Dad .... Annie Mckean (spell ?) has a superb vocal range, remarkable how she can sing high all the war down to male tenor or even high baritone. Just brought to mind the legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan ... .
Same here! But the best version of "Children Say" is from Wembley 86, i think. And not only because the original line-up still played together, but also because of Mark's JayDee that sounds like no other bassguitar. 1983-1986 were the best "Level-years" my opinion.
Tramseskumbanan Live at wembley is perfection from beginning to end. Even the sound check is amazing (somehwere on youtube). After years of thinking about it the JD is nicer sound than the alembic. This gig was really great. Live now... better than the last 15 years, but...83-85 had something really special. Original line-up were uniquely brilliant. Have to agree.
@@Tramseskumbanan bang on. Soz for a late reply to comment from so long ago! What's happened in the last 6 years then Fella? Who's got a nice balloon then?
I was lucky to see them on Saturday Night Live in 1985, and I've been a Level 42 Fan since. Great music, great musicians. The songs never get old. I second the views below regarding Mike Lindup and his album 'Changes'. What talent in writing, singing, and piano. All of this group is underrated.
I hate you only because I am so f****** jealous they are amazing and it should never open for Madonna back in the '80s they're on their own plane and the funny thing is I equal them to Steely Dan
This is my favorite version of Children Say. It is so lively, and Mark's Alembic with that gorgeous cocobolo top just sounds perfect. I've never heard the Spirit is Free before. I can't believe it. They are a studio band doing it live. PERFECTION.
I like the vocal combination of Mike and Annie McCaig. Absolutely brilliant! What a match. Great sound recording and vibes, from this concert. Probably their very best gig, or as best as the Wembley gig a few years before.
Nice, Nice, Popular Music for grownups, Pro's, Lovley. Saw Gary Husband with Holdsworth around 1990 or so, In a little place in Rochester, N.Y. I was right up front and witnessed a GREAT Band. Gary was a Bullet Train for sure. Nice to see him in this setting. Thanks for Video.
Saw these guys twice. Once in the 90's (Staring at the Sun) Manchester GMEX and in the early 00's (2002 I think) at the Royal Court. Excellent band despite personnel changes! Mark and Mike? AWESOME!
I saw them 4 times, the 1st back in March 1988 in Jakarta ( Running in the family album tour ) Alan Murphy was on Guitar, then in : 2001 , 2006 and 2010 all in Jakarta , but different Venues . The 1988 Concert was the best, They were at their Hight , they even play 3 new songs from their upcoming album "Starring at the sun".................
Thanks for sharing this video, I knew their hit( Something About You,). their vocals always lead to that Easy Listening goove. I am gonna request Brian Culbertson to play some songs of Level 42 on his UTUBEVlog: THE HANG.
Great. A lot of the silliness and poncing about like being lifted up on kirby wires had gone and they were just playing the music. I think the death of Alan Murphy which obviously knocked them all for six sent them very much back to basics. They were fantastic when I saw them at Hammersmith in late '90
This guitarist and some others even slower (different genres ) i would pick over Eddie Van Halen . Yeah fast, lot of tricks, flashy, perfection but imo Eddie lacked "substance " & "soul i.e. blues "
Mrs. Annie McCaig ? GREAAAAT ...
Mike Lindup's solo album is one of the most underrated albums out there!
I totally agree

As far as I'm aware, Mike's mum is still very much alive today 👍 You should check out Mike's solo music. The female vocalist is Annie McCaig.
I just love "Children Say"! What a great song. I've been a BIG Level 42 fan for over 30 years! Great, great World Class Musicians!

Children say was 87! But you're both right. Awesome band!

Annie's vocal range,,, WOW!
His falsetto is EVERYTHING! ❤
The harmonies are excellent in The Spirit Is Free. What a great live band Level 42 is.
Love Annie's mighty voice in this song.
whats her name?
@@Colombarolli.Davide Annie McCaig
Annie's voice in Leaving Me Now is SOOooo soulful.
Mike's album, "Changes" is still as fresh sounding today as it was then. Great songwriter and keyboardist...
Genius that is Mr Mike lindup
So great with
Annie McCaig on tour!! Love it!!
I love Annie M. !

Never heard „The spirit is free“ before. No more pure Brit funk as in the old days but fantastic songwriting, like it. And killing sound.
Fantastic version of Children Say. Just love that song!
My favorite version ! SOOoooo brilliant, as the British say.

BEAUTIFUL ❤️
This is great.
Great moment of music !!!
What a bass line , considering that is singing at the same time
Masterpiece!!!!! my son wants to play bass like you
Just awesome !!!!
Simply "Wow" to quote Kate Bush.... Very elegant good taste-show !
How good is this!! Just perfection :-)

But they didn't play Love Games. Don't know why...
Huge respect to Jakko, but I wish Alan had been there.
R.I.P: Alan Murphy, you were brilliant.
Enjoy jamming with Hendrix and Holdsworth.
is really great... MY LOVE for the group symply ...
Awesome bass playing and tune
Children say alone can be a movie .

Love Brian Culbertson too
great stuff!
love it
Parabéns para um infeliz da plateia que levou um apito para "acompanhar a música".
Level 42, anos 80, 90, aliás, para sempre.
Very nice.
Mark King back in the day....😍😋 Yummy!
Annie was pretty essential to the band, I niss here addition to the 'level 42' sound.
Met her backstage at Hammersmith where this was filmed in 90m and Alan Hodsworth-what a guy!! RIP Alan

I was there too David, Mark introduced me to Nik Kershaw backstage. a brilliant 15 night run!
VERY GOOD AND VERY ENJOYABLE
Annie McCaig
outstanding
I went to a Gig at Manchester Apollo once unfortunately Mike had lost his voice so luckily Annie McCaig was there to back up.
k recuerdo ufff k temazo
Refrain of Spirit is Free sounds dangerously close to Shakatak...
I am not worrying!...
Just getting back to listening to great 80's music. Great video, what year was this?
Sooo good
So good...
Tasty
be grateful if someone could tell me who the female singer is . merci, gracias , thanks
Annie McCaig she was their backing singer into 91 I believe, Met her after this show backstage and Mark King introduced me to Nik Kershaw
fanno muovere i culi come nessun altro ... Band grandiosa !!!
class.
Mark King .. Lindup .. shake hand one more time pls........
❤🎈🎼🎵🎶💕
Tim Renwick in guitar🎸?
Jakko Jakszyk
what tour is this?...any vids or cds of this concert?...
guaranteed tour
Without the fantastic intro of the synth as per the recording it loses the edge.
sad 9....
Mark King rules just think about today’s music how lame it is.
This guitarist and some others even slower (different genres ) i would pick over Eddie Van Halen . Yeah fast, lot of tricks, flashy, perfection but imo Eddie lacked "substance " & "soul i.e. blues "
That's Jakko Jakszyk, he went on to some good stuff including King Crimson.
