Personally, I currently live a simple Amish lifestyle in the modern world. No I am not Amish. Yes I have 4-G internet. No I have no TV. Currently, my expenses are $4,634 / year. I have everything I need and can afford to take cruises once a year. Because of corona situation maybe not this year.

I went almost a year without Wi-Fi. The only reason I have it now is because of the pandemic; working from home. If I lived with other people, I would probably have wi-fi and it would be cheaper. I still had data on my phone and wi-fi in places I would be in normally. I saved about $660 last year.

you forgot about the NEST thermostat that knows where you are and turns on the AC or heat when you close to home.

These are luxuries that should NOT be put on a credit card at 23% interest.

Stagnant salaries is of course not helping, especially for the bottom 50%. With minimum wages below 10$/h it is impossible to change anything in life for the better for the working poor.

Even if they were getting payed $20 or $30 an hour it wouldn't make a difference in their life because they will now see that extra money to spend more on wants than needs. It's more of a mental financial problem. That's the problem

Speaking of shoes ... I buy my shoes at walmart and pay no more than $20 They last for about 2 years. I wear them until my feet literally walk out of them. I also buy collar button dress shirts for $3 at walmart about every 5 years or so
while we are on the subject, Laundry saop doesn't have to be so expensive. You don't need half a dozen products just to wash clothes. I can do it for $8 / year buying in buck about a 3 years supply.

Sure. At the time, we owned 2 homes, lived in 1 and the other rented out. We actually lived in a 1300 sq ft home then by choice sold it and moved the Family in the small home.
Much less in costs and upkeep, we made do.
