My husband and I ate on a budget of $70 per week ($280 per month) for about 2 years during college. We included salads, cheap fruit if any, conventional frozen chicken breasts, canned beans, and whole grain bread with peanut butter trying to be as healthy as possible, at least what I thought at the time. I ended up getting an autoimmune condition, candida overgrowth and dysbiosis of my gut. Since, I have spent more money on supplements, organic everything, cut wheat, sugar, dairy, grains, etc. and spent so much on doctor bills and tests. It's great to save on food where you can, but don't ever compromise your health on the food you buy. Food is nutrition and is an investment for your health. There definitely are ways to save on healthy foods, such as be picky about where you shop, what you buy, etc. But I learned my lesson and will invest in healthy food because prevention and health are too important.

Completely agree. I ate poorly for years thinking I couldn't afford the "good stuff."
My health fell apart and I did a complete redo. I eat organic vegetables and cut out most of what you did. I do some dairy. Processed foord went out the window and I experimented with more stuff in the produce aisle. I totally skip the middle rows cept for my occasional coffee and cereal or ice cream(I choose one or another for a bad treat) every now and then. My health has drastically improved. No longer pre-diabetic, no more cholesterol meds. You offered great advice.

If youre in debt, i see the need to cut expenses in any way possible. The only issue i have with cutting grocery expenses is that i like to eat high quality food such as grass fed beef, local eggs from local farmers, and a wide assortment of organic fruits and veggies. For my wife and i to eat high quality like this, we could never spend only 350 a mo th for the two of us. Its usually between 550-700 a month. But we eat out a lot less anf cook all the time.
I think people need to spend more on their food since it is related to their health and wellbeing and learn to spend less on entertainment and other non as imporant items. A lot of this also has to do with where you live. I live in ND and it is very expdnsive to get quality fresh fruits and veggies since everything has to be shipped here and the growing season is so short.

Eggs with breakfast and skip the expensive cereal. Cereal is gone within the day around here! Pancakes and meat (eggs or sausage) in the mornings is more filling, plus you can make pancakes ahead and reheat them on busy mornings.

  • @katiebwheeler

Yep, family of 6 here we spend $500 a month on groceries and if we eat out at all it’s once or twice a month at fast food or quick service for less than $30-60....

I am reluctant to share the number one strategy I use to save money at the grocery store fearing once everyone knows about it there will be no "pickup" spots left when I go to "pickup" my groceries I ordered online. Oh dear, did I just say "pickup"? No impulse buying, no shopping while you're hungry and my grocery store always substitutes a larger item for the same price (discount) when out-of-stock.

I agree ... I haven't even watched the clip but oh Lord... Do I throw away money on groceries. Last time I emptied my fridge there was at least 60 that went to the thrash. Not counting FAST FOOD

Would love to hear your advice on feeding toddlers.. I used to be able to stick to a budget before picky toddlers came along!

    • @MrJas321
      @MrJas321 4 года назад +2

I gave my toddlers the same food the rest of us ate, just mashed up.
Picky eating is typically about having their own way, not the actual food.
When they're hungry enough, they'll eat what you give them. And they'll learn that Mommy and Daddy are in charge.

I like dump meals in the croc pot made from family packs of chicken breast or pork chops, serve with steamed vegetables or rice with black beans. It makes sense to use what you have and factor in the sales ads in your meal plan.

3 months after we got married my husband and was in the process to get life insurance, and then a few weeks after was diagnosed with cancer at 23😩. That was almost 30 years ago. The only way we can get any life insurance is through his companies he works for. He can’t work for himself, because we wouldn’t be able to get any life insurance. He’s has a lot of health issues too. Love debtkicken mom! We are in our 50’s don’t have house paid off or even close to it😩. Realizing my husband will probably never be able to retire. Living 8n communist California doesn’t help.

Hang in there, My husband had 3 kinds of cancer 4 years ago, , one was stage 4 he's 55 now . God is good. Trust God to see you through. He's made things so possible for us during the impossible. God Bless your husband and you. Ask God to help you and see you through, Trust me , he will make a way. I lost my job after 30 years , it's been 2 years now, God has made a way for us and we are fine. Lots of Love to you . xoxo

I challenge myself to only spend $50 a week to make 250 for the whole month this month. It just my husband and I. we do buy our beef from his parents.
Lost year it was around $700 for a 1/4 of beef. This year we go down to 1/8 of beef to save money

We do $125 a week for a family of 5 and that includes toiletries etc. We have a $50 eating out budget that is extra and $100 miscellaneous to help for overages or unexpected expenses. Jordan Page from Fun Cheap or Free suggests $100 per person per month. For example, $500 for a family of 5. I'm not 100% if that includes toiletries...but it does in our budget.
