Smoak whom is a Master Tech and BRP Rep. had done several videos on what he thinks of "ECO Mode" (Nothing good as he thinks it gums up the engine over time). When he services a Spyder he can tell if it has been run in Eco Mode.. He is also a BMW Master Tech which he does a lot of also. Best wishes and I love your channel. Don't know if at 75 I'll ever own a Spyder but, that is what I want if I ever replace my 06VTX. By the way, I always Like before watching as I know I'll like it and i will watch it all the way through and I don't want to forget by waiting till the end.. lol
I use both. In town I use ECO mode. On the open road I turn it off as I want the additional throttle response if I need it. I average 36 to 37 MPG on my 2021 RT riding solo.
I've never used ECO mode on my 2019 F3L. In fact I have a Pedal Box to improve throttle response. If I was worried about fuel efficiency I'd be driving around in a Prius for fun.
Interesting. For that last couple years, I have been wondering about that eco mode button. I wanted to try something like this out but I start riding my harley more and put down the spyder. Last week I rode the spyder and started wondering about the eco button again which brought me to your videos. Thanks for doing the work. I will not be using the eco mode. It seems that it limits the performance of the bike.
I have the same bike and I usually get 7 gallons in the tank, 230-240 miles per trip (about 33 mpg). After it stops filling, pull the nozzle out to the tip and keep filling until gas is just below the spark arrest plate. That’s just over 7 gallons. You can drive it all the way until it gives you the warning light, which is one more gallon to go (35 miles). If you fill up there you’ll put in 6 gallons to the very top again.
Chris, Shawn Smoke usually refers to ECO mode when a SpYder oil change occurs in his presence and notes both the smell and color of the oil. My guess is the EVO mode is appeasement for some government or environmental group.
@@williamgoodman6969 there is nothing in my comment nor I ever heard Shawn say it’s bad engineering. He states the oil is dark and smells funny relative to non- ECO run Spyder’s. Therefore for those two reasons he doesn’t recommend using it. My father was an automotive machinist/mechanic by trade and I grew up knowing the business. The darkened oil plus the smell is generally not something that indicates good combustion so I’ll take Shawn’s recommendation over the engineer’s.
I stopped using eco mode two years ago after watching the Shawn Smoak vlog you referred to and also talking to the service manager at my dealership. Good vlog Chris. Cheers!
I Just picked up a 2024 Spyder RT Limited in Carbon Black Dark this past saturday. (I'm in Hamilton, Ontario) I'm only using Eco mod for the week so I can get a visual on what they want me to shift gears at, which is easy since it's just about 3000 rpm for all the gears. I'm pretty well set now so will turn it of this weekend and not bother with it again. I'm a little weary on the "low fuel" thing. The low fuel light came on, I was told I had 68 kilometers to empty on the middle of the display which gives me about 45 minutes to an hour drive, then the number disappeared and all I got was 3 - - - lines which didn't impress me. I figured it would countdown to zero. I was able to go 25 kilometers PAST zero on my old 2 wheel bike. I ended up filling it up and still had 5 litres left so I was ok but I wanted to see the number count down so I wouldn't go empty early.
Congratulations on your new trike! ECO mode asks you to upshift well before 3000 RPMs, which bothered me. As to the low fuel warning system, it is very cautious, but I’d rather have it err on that side than the other.
Don’t use eco mode, either normal or sport as I have a pedal commander fitted. Just change gears using the sound of the engine or dependent on the speed limit for the road your on. Don’t like the trip meter doesn’t seem to be true to how you ride, fuel gauge is also not trustworthy either! Fuel calculator keeps changing so much when I first got it full tank would say 406kms , now I’m lucky to see it around 356kms! Ride safe Chris, regards Stephen Alberta Canada.
are you talking to complete empty (or close)? I just filled my second tank and filled it back to full after the low fuel light came on. It only took 21.5 litres to fill it back up (totally empty would be 26.5 litres) but my trip said I only got 250 km from full using 21.5 liters. I'll have to keep checking to see if it improves. at least I know I could have driven another 50 km's at least without running out of gas but I've not seen 356kms yet. but it's still new and I'll need to put a few more tanks in to get a good guide to how far mine will go per tank
For me I personally would stay in Sport Mode as I would prefare a bit more engine response in exchange for a bit less gas milage. I guess its a matter of personal choice?
I have had my 2023 Spider RT, got it brand new. I use Eco mode alot. When using Eco mode I try to keep my RMS below 2500. I get between 33 and 35 MPG. I can get about 180 to 215 miles on a tank full of gas. All my riding is in hills and twisted roads. I live in the North Northern Part of California in the Redwoods By a town Called Garberville. How big is the town? Well we do have a stop singe on Main Street.
The Spyder utilizes a high performance engine with a 12.5 to 1 compression ratio which is a very high rate compared to a normal engine. The recommended high octane fuel burns slower giving the engine better performance. If a low octane fuel was used it would burn significantly faster which could lead to pre ignition engine knock. When this happens the engine knock sensor signals the computer to retard spark plug firing which leads to lower performance. Although you can run it on standard octane fuel and get away with it over the long term you are potentially doing harm or losing fuel economy.

IThat was a while ago, i am certain i am getting better than that now.. in eco it seems to be worse if thats possible...

I guess Mr Smoke knows more than all the BRP engineers and designers?

It’s surprising BRP hasn’t either stopped putting it on the machines or released a statement about its usability.

Unfortunately the RT’s don’t have a Sport mode.

I stopped using ECO mode about a month after getting mine in May of 2023. Haven't used it since.

I’m glad it’s working for you. And your town sounds awesome! Sounds like great riding territory.
So you had 30.5mpg on eco mode and not shifting when recomended, what do you get normally?
Slightly under that.
Do you really need to use premium in the Spyder?
It is recommended by BRP, so I use either 91 or 93. I’ve heard others say they use 87 and that it works just fine, but I’m sticking with premium.

I can't seem to get my spyder off eco mode.... what's the trick in turning it off? Thanks in advance for the help
You should be able to just press the “MODE” button. That’s how you engage and disengage it.
On my 2023 after it is started push the Eco mode button
