What I love about popular knives is the ability to make them unique. There are many manufacturers of scales on the market. You can also change the clips and hardware.
I love Spyderco. It’s at least one of my favourite knife brands - if not my favourite one. My start with them was the same, btw. „What is that? That’s weird.“ But once you have held and used them, you start to understand. They really fit into my hand and I love that they experiment with different steel. And their CQI approach is top notch. But they need to be careful not to follow Benchmade with their pricing. The price tag of the new Bodacious is ridiculous. BTW, I instantly followed your account. Good job!
Great point about the pricing creeping up, I wonder if it will stabilize over time with the bodacious because it was such a highly anticipated model. Thanks for watching!
My two cents: Spyderco’s made in the USA knives are still worth purchasing, their other stuff is only worth purchasing if you want to just add a Spyderco, but for the price: CJRB, Kizer, and Kershaw are making better products for the same price (overseas).
Great point, I primarily buy American but I have been extremely impressed with the Tenacious... threw it at a tree for like an hour 1 afternoon and the clip broke off and lots of the screws loosened a bit but I cleaned it off and put it back together and it works like new. Really impressed with it especially as it was like 60 bucks. Thanks for watching!
Nice! I actually own a Tenacious and an Ambitious and I like both of them. Good to know the Tenacious is a tough piece, because I bought it think it would be a back up to my ZT 0350
My favorite Spyderco is the Native 5 lightweight. It’s very light, takes up virtually no pocket space, and the back lock is solid. The only thing I dislike is the pocket clip, but deep clips can be found easily.
I have it in SPY27 which holds a mighty edge and is quite easy to sharpen (not as easy as VG10 but still worth the effort). Great geometry and almost no weight in the pocket.
Spyderco is one of the few companies worth purchasing in 2024. They make well designed knives for ergonomics and use, in materials that are treated well. Their sprint runs are great, no one else makes knives in so many steels, ground so well. I recommend getting an endura, or stretch 2 in K390. It’s an ugly user.
Ganzo is able to produce a Spyderco PM2 copy in 440C stainless for 22$ while the original PM2 costs 220$. Considered the Original has better steel but then that steel upgrade may cost them only 10$ more on the market. So you pay roughly 190$ for the brand name only. The Spyderco in any case should not cost more than 49$ on retail with the best steel and heat treatment.
American Made products made with materials sourced here always cost more, it might be a little inflated in price but you're paying for a substantial increase in quality. I hadn't heard of Ganzo before but they look like they have some interesting imports
As a collector standpoint, Spyderco is my favorite. I love their exclusives, sprint runs, and multiple steel offerings. some of my favorites are the endura, pm2, shaman, sage.
Late to the Spyderco game but after purchasing 4 different Spyderco knives (Stretch 2 in K390, Manix 2 in CPM-M4, Lil' Native in Cruwear, and PM3 in Maxamet) I can say that I AM a fan. Their heat treats are always on point and they are fantastic tools for your money. Some of them are a little wacky as far as the prices but in this case you DO get quality for your money
I love spyderco but I gotta say you’re lucky if you haven’t had any issues with spyderco QC; bad centering, off grinds, pocket clip screws that strip the threads when I try to switch the clip over to lefty, even pocket clip screws drenched in loctite on some of them. Oh and the actual full flat grind on my wharncliffe PM2 is so crooked that the blade appears massively off center but it’s not a centering issue it’s that one side is ground more then the other so it’s actually asymmetrical! You can look at the blade straight on and see the tip is way off center from the rest of the blade 😢 But despite all that I love them and most of the time I can fix any issues
You are one of the few that I've heard have problems with them! Every single spyderco I've ever owned or even handled has been absolutely perfect aside from some tricky loctite... I have absolutely no doubt that they would take care of any issues that you have, they're supposed to have one of the best customer service departments in the industry. Sorry to hear it, hope you have better luck in the future! Thanks for watching!
I have purchased some this year. I think so far my favorite is the Crucarta Manix2 XL, certainly the best factory grind and sharpest factory edge I have ever experienced. I got an old style military factory second and the liner lock needed some stoning to be perfectly smooth. It is the one I carry 15° edge and I can afford to use it and lose it. For some reason I have a grudge against Benchmade but I am not so much of a bigot that I can't lust for a crooked river. Next stop Gayle Bradley 2. My people are from Weatherford. I’ll try and justify my compulsions any way I can.
Spyderco knives themselves are super nice and well built. Most of the popular models at this point have came in all kinds of steels as well, not just S30V. I wanted a PM2 for the longest, I was just waiting for the right one. I finally saw the S90V PM2 with teal G10 scales, immediately picked it up. It was an exclusive. Threw on a MXG Gear deep carry pocket clip and a titanium backspacer from Rock Scale Design. You can make your spyderco unique and customize it to your desires. I never cared for Spyderco at first until I got one in my hands. Pricing have gotten higher but you're right, just got to wait for a sale. Even there non US made models are sweet. The SpydieChef is one of my favorites.
Spyderco consistently just seems to have the best quality out of the box when compared to other brands in that price range. It's hard not to fall in love with them once you start using one. Thanks for watching!
I own nearly 200 Spyder's, everything from the C01 to the new Military 2. Snagged the Military 2 Compression Lock on the drop, fell in love with it and then snagged another in S110V, been hard to carry anything else.
Have a bunch of para3’s, don’t carry them I just went through a buying spree a couple years ago. My 2 favs are the REC coyote brown 10v satin and dlc versions. But my edc is either a Native Chief s30v with a Native lw MagnaCut serrated edge or a Stretch 2xl g10. With the Native lw. Great knives.
I like the native chief but it's a little big for carrying every day, I think the native 5 lw is one of my favorite knives with AWT scales on it. I am a recent para 3 buyer and I have absolutely fallen in love with the lightweight version of that as well. Thanks for watching!
Factory seconds can be bought from Spyderco during special sales typically twice a year, there are lots of other places to buy new ones -- SMKW, KnifeCenter, BladeHQ, GPKnives and lots more. Thanks for watching!
The best places to buy Spyderco are typically Freedom Knife Shop, Adept Knives, and the big retailers in that order. I plan to put out a video on how to find the best deals on knives, but for now feel free to check out the Knife Deals Community on X/Twitter to stay up to date on big sales going on! twitter.com/i/communities/1828473099274047638
I bought a Yojimbo 2 and it is the first knife I bought that the blade came in not centered and I want to say that the handle is very uncomfortable but the blade works really well! I just wish Spyderco had a build your own knife section that you could pick and choose your blades and handles
@@hawleyfromhell actually no...I'm going to wait until my awt scales come in and then get it centered. Hopefully the after market scales take care of it?
They are still ok and still thoroughly uninteresting or exciting, but very usable. For American made brands, Demko can’t be beat and Hogue is power good. For others, Kunwu, Griffin, & Vero.
Would love to check out the Deka and see if it lives up to the hype! I had the chance to hold one very briefly and it just seemed like a bugout variant, nothing crazy. Hogue fans seem to love them though! Thanks for watching!
I actually have never handled the military model, would love to if I could find one in stock somewhere! The new salt series with magnacut is pretty cool, but I wonder if they'll continue to launch models with H1 in the future... I believe at Blade Show they were talking about how overwhelmed the factory was with current production and new model production, it might take awhile for them to catch up. Thanks for watching!
@@DXSharpening The Military is great. One of my favorite Spyderco models. Massive cutting power in an ultra light package. Big but not difficult to carry. I hope they stick to H1. I have the Rocksalt . I carry it whenever I go to the beach. I would be the first to admit that H1 sucks at edge holding but nothing beats it in a saltwater environment.
@@carlsberg-gs6rl definitely seems like a model I would like as I love the Microtech folders that are much bigger than others. I'll check it out and let you know!
Manix 2 LW in SPY27 is fidgety and has one of the most secure locking systems on the market. I just ordered a Siren in LC200N and curious if the one handed swinging back lock will be just as fidgety :)
For some reason I haven't ever really been that big a fan of the manix, it just feels a little blocky to me. Maybe it's because I haven't tried out the lw version? The siren is definitely one I would be interested in as I think it's supposed to be nearly rust proof which is cool. Thanks for watching!
As a Spyderco fan boy I have to appreciate the variety of steels they offer. Also have come to love and carry more back locks more than compression locks. The Stretch 2 xl g10. Cruwear is a great edc , also the Police 4 LW pd#1 sprint and k390 model.
Don't have any experience with Spyderco Cruwear but it's definitely one of the tougher steels I've got on my Fixed Adamas. I appreciate the comments, thanks for the support!
I also avoided Spyderco for a while, then I decided to try out their budget Byrd line; and those have become my usual beater light work knives that I recommend to a lot of folks. Then I started checking out their official line and I have to say it's been really solid.
Great to hear! I have heard about the Byrd line but haven't ever handled any, I might have to look into ordering one to see if they're on par with Spyderco quality, they don't really seem to get a lot of recognition in the community so it might be something to check out. Thanks for watching!
I think that's been a really popular release, I would imagine Spyderco will incorporate that steel into some of their other models... Thanks for watching!
I think spyderco makes the best no nonsense pocket knife . The prices are too high but so is every other brand . Spyderco you're at least getting a quality knife with great heat treat and the locks aren't going to fail on you . Big fan
started this year buying sebenzas. love them. i think they are for sure one of the best designed knives out there. but i think at retail they are too expensive. i buy mine all at secondary prices of like around 400. i think they are S tier in that range. recently started grabbing spydercos cause they are a lot more affordable and the variety of steel they offer is wild. rex45 and k390 from spyderco are the real deal super steels in my opinion. i hope we see more fun steels on the bodacious. i think it coming is s30v is really boring and makes in unappealing till they make it with a different steel even though i like the way it looks. seems like a cool mix of pm2 and also the shaman.
I hope to be able to get a sebenza or an umnumzaan one day but you're right they are very expensive. I find it hard to justify paying $400 for a used knife but I'm sure they hold up very well even to frequent use so maybe it doesn't matter. Thanks for watching!
Great question, I plan to make a detailed video on this soon but in the mean time there are lots of reputable knife dealer websites. BladeHQ, SMKW, KnifeCenter, GPKnives, DLT Trading are some of the big ones that are typically popular... just check for sales periodically and around holidays. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for the upcoming video!
@derrickburnett8703 awesome to hear you're familiar with them, I bought a para 3 lw the other week and it was delivered like 2 or 3 days later. Had a really positive experience with them and will definitely be ordering from them again in the future! Thanks for the comment!
Good thing they offer literally the widest variety of steel without any competitors anywhere close. S30V is slightly more tough and slightly less stainless than M390/20CV. M390 does not have much of an edge retention advantage outside of endurance cutting the same thing. S45VN is tougher than both and in-between them in stainless. S30V is actually a good choice for making new designs in though. Not all that tough. Not all that high of carbide volume so not too brittle either. Rather Stainless. Ive managed to permanently spot a few up badly. S30V is a great baseline for its middle of the road properties to decide on which steels are optimal in which blade geometry. Whats better than S30V? S90V is my favorite steel. Cruwear is #2 and also heavily used on spydies. Magnacut more your thing? Its getting rather proliferated and is more stainless and works as better pry bar than S30V. That doesnt increase its value though. S45VN or even Magnacut should become more of a standard I suppose. But they arent crazily superior in practice. Everything else is either almost glass so gravity gives me anxiety, or the blade and sharpness are literally weak to air, moisture and especially salty snack fingers. If my knife has a weakness that is a constant environmental factor like corrosive molecules or potential energy catches you slippin. I cant take the OCD oiling or keeping it put away to avoid permanent scuff. Scuffs should be from use.
@quickslashgib5800 I do like their cru-wear offerings. What bothers me about spending over $200 for s30v are the competitive options. You can find quality s35vn knives for under $150.
@dmp762 I think you're paying for the heat treat of the steel vs the steel... Spyderco does an incredible job treating their steels whereas other companies may use other, more high steel steels but treat them poorly so you aren't getting the benefits
@DXSharpening For a real world example of what I mean. Compare the Spyderco Shaman(s30v) to the Cold Steel American Lawman(s35vn) and the Military 2(s30v) to the Recon 1(s35vn). In both cases the Spyderco costs a lot more. The American Lawman and Recon 1 are not known to have poor heat treatment or low quality in general. To be fair, both of those spyderco's are US made, and both Cold Steel's are made in Taiwan. I can 100% understand wanting to by US made goods. I personally feel like I would get a better value from Spyderco by buying their knives made from other steels. Like cru-wear. I'm serious considering buying the Military 2 or pm2 in cru-wear micarta. I would also consider buying their s30v knives that are under $200.
It might not be red loctite but when I tell you I have spend a long time trying to unscrew that pivot I mean 1 or 2 hours... might have to try and find a cheap heat gun from harbor freight or something
I wonder what's going on with your bodacious, cuz they announced in like 2017 or 2018 that they would no longer use Red loctite, that would be kind of crappy if they started using it again
I could just be doing something wrong but I have spent a significant amount of time on trying to get the pivot screws out and have been unsuccessful at even getting it to budge... it might loosen over time or something, but we'll have to see. Thanks for watching!
They continue to say they're going to try to bring production back to the states so hoping we see some models come back from overseas! Thanks for watching!
Spyderco is literally cheaper feels more premium, and they make so many custom scales and hardware out there. You could build a more original one that nobody has to yourself over the bench made.
If dish soap doesn't work with some light scrubbing you can try and slather some oil on the blade and then wash it off again. If you carefully rub with your fingers sometimes you can just buff them out as well. Hopefully you can figure it out but if not you'll have a nicely worn in knife! Can I ask where yku were able to find one? I love that color scheme but haven't seen any available lately. Thanks for watching!
@@bishoplokz6637 I would be a little hesitant to scrub really hard with a sponge just in fear of messing up the coating, Spydercos typically seem to have quite durable blade coatings so might be worth just leaving the streaks on there.
If one is buying an S30V knife from Spyderco… one is missing their entire catalog of various and exotic steels they offer. Nothing boring about Spyderco
I saw a Tenacious with a titanium handle and 8cr………. This confuses me as I don’t understand why anyone would want an expensive and exotic handle material and a blade that is made of cheese!!!! Am I missing something? I’m more than happy to be educated.
They have certainly raised the prices, but they still have cheaper models that don't come from the Golden, CO factory like the tenacious -- which is like 60-70 bucks but performs better than most $120-130 knives. Thanks for watching!
Yet they have just released a whole series of knives in cru wear that are in the 200$ range. They also are dropping a sprint run of their seki city line in a cts equivalent to cruwear for really cheap. I have found spyderco to be more realistic in their pricing for the materials
The price of everything is going up it's not spyderco it's inflation. Inflation = less purchasing power of the dollar, and now it's diminishing faster then ever before. When this bubble bursts wait and see how costly thing's will become. I'd buy what you want now if you can, before it's too late!!
With all due respect to the Spyderco fan base I have always hated the loooks of the brand but so many of my friends have told me that I don't know what a knife is until I own one
Syperco can't seem to make a knife that has a blade longer than 1/3" of its handle length. Never ever been impressed with syperco. Heat treat is great... but that's about it.
I am on the far end of the spectrum of being considered a steel geek and I still love Spyderco! Pretty much any modern steel above s30v is the same in my eyes, some differences that are noticeable obviously with carbon vs stainless steels but they all function well, I think it's more of a hype thing honestly but to each their own! Thanks for the comment!
@loosieclocker I can't lie the Mule Team is an awesome idea that i wish more companies would put their own spin on, I plan to get one at some point there are just things higher on my list right now... do you have a favorite steel in particular? I've always questioned the hype around magnacut and I have the native 5 salt in magnacut but it seems to be everyone's favorite and I can't really tell a difference yet
@@DXSharpening magnacut is amazing if the correct Rockwell is hit. One of the very few steels created specifically for knives. Love it. K390 is a personal favorite. But most steels are absolutely fine.
@loosieclocker I have always seen things warning against carbon steels and lots of people say they're really difficult to keep rust free. I've never had a problem with them at all and on fixed blades they do actually seem to perform noticeably better than some other fixed blades in stainless -- other than that I don't really think I could tell them difference between magnacut and s30v... I'm also more focused on how cool knives look vs steel sometimes hahaha Thanks for the comments!
Native 5 is the best spyderco knife, am willing to argue. Others are all suboptimal in one minor way or another but they generally cut better than most competition. Beyond that they're kind of ugly and boring but tend to hit hrc targets.
And as for benchmade, they stayed in business for so long because of two factors: the 940 and the axis lock. Today the axis lock is done better elsewhere, the 940's design is early and outdated and the bugout is keeping them afloat. Of all major knife brands benchmade will be the first to implode.
If they had a native 5 with a compression lock and no choil I think it would be the best, I love the blade shape and the size but I find the choil without a raise part near the hole (like pm2 p3) a little awkward at times but might be a preference thing.
@@DXSharpening Native 5 is dumb with a compression lock. You don't need finger safe locks when nearly every knife has such a massive finger choil. Go with one or the other or your design is flawed. Their back lock is among the best and it ages much better. Still a one handed knife. I think you could be right about the improved springs helping benchmade's case but when does benchmade do anything wise?
@@DXSharpening Also spyderco knives with the thumb ramp in the way are already suboptimal. No need to put that in the way, your thumb goes where you need it.
Be aware that with Spyderco, if you need a 50 cent bushing for your knife pivot, you will have to send your knife back (paying shipping both ways) and pay to have it replaced. They will not simply ship you the part you need. I have a Domino with the paper thin cheap bushing that fails and it will cost me $35 to fix a $1 worth in parts. Their customer service is crap!
Great question, they only have a sale once or twice a year where they sell to the public online and in their store in Golden, CO. I believe there is a limited selection of them year round in their brick and mortar store, but generally the best times to get them are whenever they're put up online as they'll have a lot more. You can also look for them on ebay, some people will buy a bunch in store and sell them online slightly marked up but still way less than normal prices. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
I wish they would release a bunch of new models in "boring" steels such as a lightweight pm2 or a compression lock native 5 or a smaller bodacious, but it seems like we are in the minority when it comes to that. Thanks for watching!
@@DXSharpening Totally agree and they would sell. It would give people a chance to try the design before, if at all, wanting to spend a bunch of money on more expensive steel.
@@levelwu hopefully they will grow into it, I think the golden, co factory is supposed to be expanding like crazy so they might finally be able to catch up with production and have a surplus

You can look at the blade straight on and see the tip is way off center from the rest of the blade 😢
But despite all that I love them and most of the time I can fix any issues
Ha, awesome to hear. I have heard good things about the military model and would love to check one out eventually. Thanks for watching!

Where are you purchasing them that they are on sale so often? Spyderco website or other stores like blade hq, dlc etc.or both?
The best places to buy Spyderco are typically Freedom Knife Shop, Adept Knives, and the big retailers in that order. I plan to put out a video on how to find the best deals on knives, but for now feel free to check out the Knife Deals Community on X/Twitter to stay up to date on big sales going on!

started this year buying sebenzas. love them. i think they are for sure one of the best designed knives out there. but i think at retail they are too expensive. i buy mine all at secondary prices of like around 400. i think they are S tier in that range. recently started grabbing spydercos cause they are a lot more affordable and the variety of steel they offer is wild. rex45 and k390 from spyderco are the real deal super steels in my opinion. i hope we see more fun steels on the bodacious. i think it coming is s30v is really boring and makes in unappealing till they make it with a different steel even though i like the way it looks. seems like a cool mix of pm2 and also the shaman.
I hope to be able to get a sebenza or an umnumzaan one day but you're right they are very expensive. I find it hard to justify paying $400 for a used knife but I'm sure they hold up very well even to frequent use so maybe it doesn't matter. Thanks for watching!

I like their knives, but I won't spend $200+ for s30v.
Fair enough, can't really argue with you there. Thanks for watching!
@quickslashgib5800 I do like their cru-wear offerings.
Spyderco went away with the red loctite a while back. Im surprised you have red loctite. None of mine do all the way back to 2021
It might not be red loctite but when I tell you I have spend a long time trying to unscrew that pivot I mean 1 or 2 hours... might have to try and find a cheap heat gun from harbor freight or something
There higher end stuff is great but their lower end knives while well designed really are lagging behind the pack in terms of steel.
They continue to say they're going to try to bring production back to the states so hoping we see some models come back from overseas! Thanks for watching!
Spyderco is literally cheaper feels more premium, and they make so many custom scales and hardware out there. You could build a more original one that nobody has to yourself over the bench made.

Thanks for watching! Let me know what else you'd like to see
I just got the avocado pm3. And there is 2 vertical streaks in the pvd I can't get them off anyone know why it's like that or what I cab do
If dish soap doesn't work with some light scrubbing you can try and slather some oil on the blade and then wash it off again. If you carefully rub with your fingers sometimes you can just buff them out as well. Hopefully you can figure it out but if not you'll have a nicely worn in knife!
Can I ask where yku were able to find one? I love that color scheme but haven't seen any available lately.

I tried rubbing with mineral oil and a magic eraser. No luck. I was able to get from REC Knives. It was an exclusive. Love the color also

They've gone way overpriced like benchmade, it's for people who don't actually use knives
@@bubblegum8876 absolutely would agree with you
The price of everything is going up it's not spyderco it's inflation. Inflation = less purchasing power of the dollar, and now it's diminishing faster then ever before. When this bubble bursts wait and see how costly thing's will become. I'd buy what you want now if you can, before it's too late!!

@@DXSharpening i am said steel geek. Love how they experiment with sprint runs and the mule team. Their heat treatments tend to be right on the mark
I'm also more focused on how cool knives look vs steel sometimes hahaha
Thanks for the comments!
If they would implement the new flat springs in all their designs without a price increase, I genuinely think that would save the company
Probably the first negative experience I've ever heard of with Spyderco customer service, sorry to hear it. Thanks for the comment!

where does Spyderco sell their factory seconds ?
Great question, they only have a sale once or twice a year where they sell to the public online and in their store in Golden, CO. I believe there is a limited selection of them year round in their brick and mortar store, but generally the best times to get them are whenever they're put up online as they'll have a lot more. You can also look for them on ebay, some people will buy a bunch in store and sell them online slightly marked up but still way less than normal prices. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!
