I'm so grateful that you're posting these epic clips and episodes from Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. I thought I'd never see them again and now, as an adult, I understand the jokes and it's funny all over again. Thanks a million. 🙂

Kinda galling that they actually were forbidden to have Garner and the black girl kiss on Network TV. (Star Trek was the first to break that rule) But I love how they gave the network a dig by having him "take her home". Thus implying something even more "shocking". BTW they ordered the girls from less to more "attractive". But in reality Ruth Buzzi and Joanne Worley were made to look bad for the show (comedic effect). I've seen them in other shows and they're rather nice looking.

In several episodes, Sammy Davis gets kissed by the ladies, and he would joke" we've just lost Alabama", or Mississippi or Georgia or......

Right after Arte Johnson, as Wolfgang, popped up and said, "In Birmingham (AL) right now, zere vatching a test pattern! Belief it!"

I wonder if the writers were leery of a white actor kissing a black actor? It was apparently big news on star trek November 1968 when Shatner kissed Nichelle Nichols.

I think they were. He kissed every woman except the black actress.

I think it was the opposite. The writers wanted him to be able to kiss her, the network wouldn't let them because of the sponsors, so the writers inserted this cheeky protest.

02:06 - 02:12 Commentary on 1969 what in late 2023 is a shockingly racist and uncalled-for network standard. (Fun fact: in 1970 Goldie Hawn intentionally kissed Sammy Davis Jr. in an unscripted moment during a skit with Dan Rowan while Sammy was dressed in his "Here comes da judge" costume, and the network censors let it slip by.)
