My late sister used to work in the support staff (usher/security) at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s. She encountered several stars when awards shows were held there. She rarely spoke ill of any celebrity unless if they were truly rude or off the rails. However, 2 individuals stood out for their kindness and graciousness: Ed Asner and James Garner. Perhaps for Mr. Garner, growing up in Oklahoma had something to do with staying grounded and being nice to everybody. Fine actor, too!

James Garner was great in both Maverick shows, the Rockford Files, and the under rated Nichols series. He just finished the Great Escape the year before, and The Americazation of Emily as this show was broadcast. I kept thinking, why oh why didn't someone change that family name? And it reminded me of an anecdote.
Many years ago I worked with a German-born man. His given name was Heinrich, but in this country he was known as Peter. At some point his father found out and was quite upset. He explained to his son that he put a lot of thought into naming his children and wasn't happy that the name would be discarded.
Peter explained to his father that people named Heinrich were usually called "Heinie" for short. Then he explained the meaning of that word in the American vernacular.
Peter then told his audience that his father was mollified by his son's explanation. Then after a dramatic pause, Peter would add that he didn't have the heart to tell his father the colloquial meaning of "peter" in America!

I wish, like on many other shows, they would acknowledge the existence of the announcer. As a radio guy, I paid particular attention to the announcers when I was growing up, and it would, I think, have been quite proper for the first panelist to say "thanks Johnny" or whoever might be announcing that night. The announcer is like the guy who opens the bombardier doors on an aircraft. Without him to kick things off, nothing gets done. Plus, almost always, it was the announcer who would "warm up" the audience before the show and get them in the mood for the night's entertainment. On most shows the announcer is indispensable.

Craig Breedlove is an absolute boss. Even though Art Arfons broke his landspeed record two days after this episode aired, Breedlove took back the title a week later, which stood for the next five years. Also, his crash during his October 15th run referenced here set a record that still stands for longest tire skidmarks (6 miles).
Upon exiting his crashed car, he said "For my next trick, I'll set myself on fire."

James birth surname was Bumgarner. So it was no wonder he changed it to just Garner. In 1964, he was known mostly for his character Bret Maverick on "Maverick" (1957-60), when he quit in a contract dispute. Then he starred in movies, before he starred in "The Rockford Files."

@What's My Line?: I've been watching (most of) The Rockford Files these past few weeks, as - even though I loved the series - I stopped watching it after it's 2nd year (I was a kid, and other things began to occupy my time rather than TV), so, many of the episodes are new 2 me.
I love James Garner's work, and you get such a good feeling from him,so, it was such a pleasure watching him here as the Mystery Guest, and hear Ms. Francis say how universally well liked he is.
    Thanks for posting this.

Tony Randall proved to be a very astute, observant player, reading between the lines, picking up hints from ordinarily innocuous sources. With the speed record race car driver, he perceived a congratulatory tone in the _applause_ he received. When the question was posed if Mrs. Thomas was a newscaster, and she and Daly, hesitated before saying no, he immediately picked up on something and brought it back to newscasts in general, maybe it's another facet of the nightly news. And with the last contestant, he sensed from the audience reaction to every question, a certain "risibility" in their attitude towards his vocation. I think that with Mr. Randall in the fourth seat, this was the strongest panel lineup in the history of What's My Line.

Such a good show...and Jim Garner truly never took himself seriously. Even his humility was probably so understated that folks misunderstood him. God, he was good at everything he did and wasn't ever really sure he even wanted to do such means of work.
