I'm pretty much an atheist at this point in my life, but I must say, it was refreshing to see how civil and courteous everyone was in allowing Billy Graham the time to go into a bit of detail about the somewhat recent Crusade he had led in Germany. If this show were to have been aired in modern times, it probably would have tried to keep away from themes of god and religion in the hopes of "not offending anyone". When my age was in single digits, back in the 60's, all I knew about Bennet Cerf was he was associated with Dr. Seuss. That made him a big man in my estimation!
Purple Capricorn -- One interesting fact about Theordore Seuss Geisel, better known by his nom de plume, Dr. Seuss, is how he pronounced his name. He always said "Doctor Soyss" to rhyme "choice". Unfortunately, when I try to pronounce it the way he pronounced it himself ("eu" in a German-derived words is pronounced like "oi" in English), people look at me as though I'm nuts.
Green Eggs and Ham was my son's favorite book when he was little! I even dyed some scrambled eggs green and served them with ham for breakfast one day. He loved it! Later I found out there were actually chicken eggs that had pale green shells.
Everyone should watch how Mr Daly makes sure everyone is shown respect. Those who are asking or answering questions. He makes sure that no one is disrespected in anyway. He shows respect & kindness to EVERYONE !!! " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you " !
He was not the first preacher to appear consistently on television, but he understood how to use TV better than any of the preachers of his time. He appeared one night on "What's My Line?" -- and generated a couple of great spontaneous lines from young comic Joey Bishop. It is interesting to see the response he got from the New York sophisticates of late night CBS TV. The very Catholic Dorothy Kilgallen did not stand up for him as she did years before for the first great TV preacher Father Fulton J Sheen. [Kilgallen asked all mystery guests that first question of hers in late 1960 in an effort to get Casey Stengl if he ever appeared. oh bru uther] This is quite typical of his crusade style -- he was not afraid to go into lions dens.. Some of the longest and biggest of his crusades were in New York City and to big success IN MEMORIAM -- William Franklin Graham, Junior "REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM"

So refreshing to see and hear John Daly speak of God when talking with Billy Graham. RIP Mr. Graham, we lost you only a day or two ago. I'm sure you heard "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Its so interesting how histoic events and items wrapped themselves around this show. " Green eggs and Ham" a new book and Billy. Graham ran a non profit church.
Also for the record, Bennet Cerf bet Dr Suess that he couldn't write a book using 50 words or less, and the product became 'Green Eggs and Ham', which uses exactly 50 different words, and 49 of them are mono-syllabic. Only "anywhere" has more than one syllable. That's keeping it simple!
@@krystonjones You're probably thinking that any evangelist must be in the business for personal profit, and sadly many are. Graham was one of the few I really could respect, because on his crusades he worked with local churches and encouraged his hearers to get involved with churches in their community. He didn't try to build up a following for himself of donors, as so many televangelists do.
The thing I find interesting, in Rev. Graham's story, is that this was in a period of comparative laxness; the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, thus ensuring no contact between the Germanies, and one had to smuggle Bibles into the then-Soviet Union, up through the early 90s. So he was there at a fortuitous time.
Not ALL TV Pastors were bad!. Billy Graham was probably the best! but there are others as well My favorite evangelist/prophet (whatever she is) is Kat Kerr!! I LOVE Kat Kerr!
To my mind, Anthony Quinn was one of the top ten greatest American dramatic actors. He was an incredibly talented and versatile individual, who dominated the screen by his presence.
"If somebody would please revive my mother and father..." Joey Bishop said that because he was JEWISH. Billy Graham is now 95 years old. What a story about his crusade in Germany.
Especially since his crusade was before the Berlin wall was built keeping the East Berliners inside the communist district. Thankfully, I lived long enough to also see that wall torn down in November, 1989.

As we speak there are children in the world being raped, starving to death, dying of excruciatingly painful disease, etc, but God looks on and does not help. You know this is happening. The Bible is clear that God is able to help. This only means that He chooses not to, for whatever reason. And that says everything about Him(if he existed) The Bible is clear that God knows the future. This means that God knew before He created Satan that Satan would rebel, cause carnal nature, misery and sin on the Earth, and that the majority of human history would be that of suffering, including eternal punishment in Hell of the vast majority of humans, and necessitate the death of God's son Jesus as atonement for sin. God knew all of this before-hand, yet he went ahead and created Satan and humans anyway knowing before-hand what would happen. I note that Anthony Quinn's co-star in "Becket" was, as John Daly pointed out, Sir Laurence Olivier, who played the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas à Becket, opposite Quinn's King Henry II. I was intrigued to find out that the play was written in French by Jean Anouilh and premiered in 1959 as "Becket ou l'honneur de Dieu" in Paris on Oct. 8, 1959. It premiered in English translation a year later on Broadway on Oct. 5, 1960, just four days before this episode of WML aired. The Broadway production won four Tony awards and during its extended production, at one point during its run, Quinn and Olivier switched roles so that Quinn played the assassinated Archbishop and Olivier played the King. I wish I'd seen the play back then -- and I wish I'd seen it twice to see the roles played both ways, had I been old enough in 1960 to appreciate it. As many know, there was a film adaptation of "Becket" in 1964 starring Richard Burton as the Archbishop and Peter O'Toole as the King. I've never seen it, but now I think I need to.
You have the story slightly wrong: Quinn and Olivier starred on B'way in BECKETT for six months. It then closed and went on tour with Olivier playing Quinn's role opposite Arthur Kennedy, who took over Olivier's original role. Following a short tour, BECKETT returned to Broadway for a month in the Spring of '61 so critics and audiences could see Olivier in the other role opposite Kennedy. (Hope this isn't TOO confusing!)
Mother Theresa? Who denied her patients pain medication so that they could "suffer with Jesus"? All she did was maintain warehouses for the dying and write letters trying to get crooks like Charles Keating off for their criminal activities, because Keating had given her some of the stolen loot. Of course, when Mother Theresa needed medical care, she got into a jet and traveled to the Mayo Clinic.
Billy Graham had a calling, it was not a line. He lived very simply, had a nice place up in the mountains, but not expensive, as you might think considering all the money he brought in. He really was a saintly man, he meant it. Counseled every president that wanted it, regardless of party. Wasn't he handsome, too, with that beautiful hair.

I had to laugh at John Daly's response to Dorothy's question about a serving of a small pork sausage [that she would have a hard time keeping her friends if she didn't serve more than a small pork sausage--or words to that effect].
Apparently, celebrities only went to New York if they were there for another reason such as a new movie being premiered or work being done. That Dorothy Kilgallen has the inside scoop on all that is going on on Broadway so she has an inside track.
For the record, Edgar Buchannan was another celebrity that not only studied dentistry, but actually had a practice in Oregon and Altadena CA before giving it up to become a full time actor in the 1940s.
The 10/2/60 episode is rumored to exist in a private collection. Panel was Dorothy Kilgallen, Steve Allen, Arlene Francis, Bennett Cerf, and the mystery guests were Kirk Douglas and Mickey Rooney.
Actually, Douglas wasn't on as a mystery guest on that show, he was there because of a sideline occupation of his, "Sells electric blankets for horses." The program may have been destroyed in 1975 when Gil Fates was putting together the anniversary special because he wanted to use the clip of Douglas from that show but as he wrote, "Douglas remembered the spot, AND HATED IT!". Given how other shows were mishandled when putting that special together (the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis one from 1954) I suspect that's what happened there.

It was nice that the panel all stood up for that woman who was 70 years old and at the time, thought to be quite elderly. Amazing what kind of energy she must’ve had.
She looks more elderly than many 70 year olds nowadays.
These days 70 is not old. And many don't look that old.

Perhaps because he at least a lil respect and reverence for God deep within himself. Perhaps, admittedly, that's more than I can say of myself.
I'm no religious man. But neither does that serve as a ticket to knock people's faiths...because I don't think so. Oddly enough, I consider that a sin for for folks that do.
There was a day Religion, actually the Bible, was respected as a rule for living weather you were religious or not. It was known as "The Good Book" This started changing in the 60's, In my opinion. I am just an amateur Church Historian.

The 60s, the second half esp. Is when all hell broke loose with the Counter-Culture movement. The Hippies seemed to have been nice people by and large what with their "Peace and Love" slogans (I mean, nothing wrong at all with peace and love), but they struck me as being a bit in the lost side. I mean really. Although I wasn't around back then to see and experience it all in midst of it or on the sidelines, I felt this from watching numerous movies, TV shows documentaries, reading books and mag articles, listening to music etc. in part and whole touching on or centering around "Flower Child" values and norms. In point of fact, I's my true feeling a lot of them kids got really messed up in upshot from kicking aside to oblivion traditional Western values.
SwarthySkinnedOne terrific way of suming it up by your observation from a distance. I was just a bit young, but enjoyed the music that was a result of it. So when I look back I see it with different eyes than you do. Nostalgic eyes sometimes don’t interpret well. Thanks for sharing.
loved the regulars but wish Joey Bishop had been one-he is so funny on this show-but not disrespectful or sarcastic.
I'm constantly amazed at the intelligence of Dorothy Kilgallen.
If she was so intelligent, how did she allow herself to be murdered?
I'm pretty much an atheist at this point in my life, but I must say, it was refreshing to see how civil and courteous everyone was in allowing Billy Graham the time to go into a bit of detail about the somewhat recent Crusade he had led in Germany. If this show were to have been aired in modern times, it probably would have tried to keep away from themes of god and religion in the hopes of "not offending anyone". Love this show; and to the person that runs this channel, thank you for your hard work in tracking episodes down, and also for moderating this channel. ❤👍
@White Lightning ah yes, the "all loving God" you all talk about. Right.
That’s too bad. People are the evil in this world and they have free will. I wouldn’t want to be a slave, would you?
Things were different back then.
I’m a Christian and share your opinion.
Could you have made this comment without mentioning your personal religious leaning?

When my age was in single digits, back in the 60's, all I knew about Bennet Cerf was he was associated with Dr. Seuss. That made him a big man in my estimation!
Well ill be doggone.....Cerf published Suess books. I read them I read them here and there........I read them everywhere.
In German, it's pronounced "Zoyss".
I remember checking out his joke book from the school library in the late 60's/early 70's. It's fun to see what he looked like.
Green Eggs and Ham was my son's favorite book when he was little! I even dyed some scrambled eggs green and served them with ham for breakfast one day. He loved it! Later I found out there were actually chicken eggs that had pale green shells.
I had “Bennet Cerf’s Book of Animal Riddles” when I was a kid in the 60s.
Everyone should watch how Mr Daly makes sure everyone is shown respect. Those who are asking or answering questions. He makes sure that no one is disrespected in anyway. He shows respect & kindness to EVERYONE !!! " Do unto others as you would have them do unto you " !
"Shirtless" should take note!
Yes, that's one reason I like these videos so much. So much fun yet no disrespect to anyone.
The best, so far, of Joey Bishop's excellent panel appearances. No wonder the producers kept asking him back with such alacrity.
Some of the longest and biggest of his crusades were in New York City and to big success

This must be the first appearance on tv that I've seen of Anthony Quinn, what a great man!
Anthony Quinn! that man was more than just an actor: he was a great experience
Billy Graham was probably the best! but there are others as well

"If somebody would please revive my mother and father..." Joey Bishop said that because he was JEWISH. Billy Graham is now 95 years old. What a story about his crusade in Germany.
I loved hearing about his crusade.
Especially since his crusade was before the Berlin wall was built keeping the East Berliners inside the communist district. Thankfully, I lived long enough to also see that wall torn down in November, 1989.

@@johndonahue3162 The Bible is clear time and again that God has the ability to save human life and prevent suffering. Your great, great, great, great uneducated grandparents believed the Christ-myth and their children through the decades have felt compelled to believe it also because it is your heritage and way of life, just as if you had been born into Buddhism, Shintoism, Anamism, Islam or any other cultural heritage and belief system, all of them created by humans, like your Christ-myth. Once again, Arlene stood to shake hands with Billy Graham, since he was a clergyman, but Dorothy did not -- Dorothy would only stand to shake hands with Roman Catholic nuns or clergy, never a Protestant. Both women stood for the chili con carne lady, though, no doubt out of respect for her age -- and both Dorothy and Arlene seem to stand for contestants who are senior citizens.

Anthony Quinn is my all-time favourite actor. My idol.
It then closed and went on tour with Olivier playing Quinn's role opposite Arthur Kennedy, who took over Olivier's original
role. Following a short tour, BECKETT returned to Broadway for a month in the Spring of '61 so critics and
audiences could see Olivier in the other role opposite Kennedy. (Hope this isn't TOO confusing!)
ToddSF 94109 - I did see it and learned so much history seeing it. Also the performances were really earth shattering.

Wonderful to see Billy Graham on this; one of the finest godly human beings next to Mother Theresa and M.Ghandi who ever lived. Tk you for posting.

Arlene's introduction could be nominated as most funny intro of Bennett. Ham indeed.

Thanks - because they were mentioning in the previous episode that Steve Allen would return, I was noticing and wondering why that one was missing.
A lovely time in our world
