    Just three short years later, around 1963, I trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior because of the preaching of this dear man.
    1John 5:12 "He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." (KJV)

    On a side note about my Vietnam experiences is also meeting Joey Bishop, one of my dad's favorites. On a typical hot and miserable day, from our tent city, a few hundred feet from my work area, I saw directly before me, Mr. Joey Bishop, hand in hand with two gorgeous young women walking through our camp.
    Meeting him was a thrill, most of my buddies were more interested in the stunning ladies, than having a chance for a conversation. Let me add, Mr. Bishop didn't go to the Officer's Club to eat, and be a general’s pet. Instead, he went to the working man, the blue-color soldier, ate in our Mess Hall, we had no warm food to offer and he didn’t complain. A great guy! These are stories rarely told.

    I'm pretty much an atheist at this point in my life, but I must say, it was refreshing to see how civil and courteous everyone was in allowing Billy Graham the time to go into a bit of detail about the somewhat recent Crusade he had led in Germany. If this show were to have been aired in modern times, it probably would have tried to keep away from themes of god and religion in the hopes of "not offending anyone". Love this show; and to the person that runs this channel, thank you for your hard work in tracking episodes down, and also for moderating this channel. ❤👍

      The 60s, the second half esp. Is when all hell broke loose with the Counter-Culture movement. The Hippies seemed to have been nice people by and large what with their "Peace and Love" slogans (I mean, nothing wrong at all with peace and love), but they struck me as being a bit in the lost side. I mean really. Although I wasn't around back then to see and experience it all in midst of it or on the sidelines, I felt this from watching numerous movies, TV shows documentaries, reading books and mag articles, listening to music etc. in part and whole touching on or centering around "Flower Child" values and norms. In point of fact, I's my true feeling a lot of them kids got really messed up in upshot from kicking aside to oblivion traditional Western values.

    I attended Billy Graham's crusade in San Jose, California, about 1980. One of the things that impressed me most was that he encouraged people to get involved in their local churches (as I already was), rather than trying to gain followers of and donors to his own ministry, the way most television preachers seem to do. Those who criticize him for getting chummy with politicians *may* have a point, but I think it's unfair to lump him in with the majority of televangelists on money issues.

      The important thing is that it didn't matter which party the President of the United States belonged to. Graham ministered to all of them during his time and when he was too infirm to travel, they sought him. No one is perfect and he made some missteps along the way, but generally was quick to realize them and apologize for them.
      As far as dealing with the general public, he was looking to make followers of the Lord, not of himself. That's not the MO of a charlatan or huckster.

    • @greydogmusic
      @greydogmusic 6 лет назад +7

      Neil, I am not a fan of the TV preachers you refer to. But, there is most likely a difference. Most of the TV preachers i see today are pastors of a church. Therefore, followers are welcome. Graham was an evangelist. You pass converts on to local churches so they can grow. Different ministries.

      Neil Midkiff - I think that it is difficult to speak of or think of religious personages getting involved in politics. The founders of our country tried to put in place policies to protect us from intrusion into politics by religious leaders. Billy Graham should have known better but at least he refrained from using his renown to advance himself monetarily. How different are things these days. Our country was settled in its earliest history by people trying to escape from religious tyranny. I don't speak pejoratively about religion. It may well be a basic human drive to learn the answers to the deepest and most terrifying questions we have. But the answers some of us have come up with should not be imposed as policy on us as a society. Let each person find his or her own way.

    • @neilmidkiff
      @neilmidkiff 4 года назад +12

      @@shirleyrombough8173 You have a different understanding about the Founders than what I get from my reading. The First Amendment limits the federal government, not religious personages: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." We can't have a national church; elsewhere, the constitution says that there can be no religious test as a qualification for public office. Those are good limits on government. But the concept that everyone in government must act as if they were atheist, or that every professed believer must stay silent about politics, is not supported by history; it goes against the "free exercise" clause.

    He was not the first preacher to appear consistently on television, but he understood how to use TV better than any of the preachers of his time. He appeared one night on "What's My Line?" -- and generated a couple of great spontaneous lines from young comic Joey Bishop. It is interesting to see the response he got from the New York sophisticates of late night CBS TV. The very Catholic Dorothy Kilgallen did not stand up for him as she did years before for the first great TV preacher Father Fulton J Sheen. [Kilgallen asked all mystery guests that first question of hers in late 1960 in an effort to get Casey Stengl if he ever appeared. oh bru uther] This is quite typical of his crusade style -- he was not afraid to go into lions dens.. Some of the longest and biggest of his crusades were in New York City and to big success

The Bible is clear that God is able to help. This only means that He chooses not to, for whatever reason. And that says everything about Him(if he existed) The Bible is clear that God knows the future. Graham's story, is that this was in a period of comparative laxness; the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, thus ensuring no contact between the Germanies, and one had to smuggle Bibles into the then-Soviet Union, up through the early 90s. I note that Anthony Quinn's co-star in "Becket" was, as John Daly pointed out, Sir Laurence Olivier, who played the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas à Becket, opposite Quinn's King Henry II. I was intrigued to find out that the play was written in French by Jean Anouilh and premiered in 1959 as "Becket ou l'honneur de Dieu" in Paris on Oct. 8, 1959. It premiered in English translation a year later on Broadway on Oct. 5, 1960, just four days before this episode of WML aired. The Broadway production won four Tony awards and during its extended production, at one point during its run, Quinn and Olivier switched roles so that Quinn played the assassinated Archbishop and Olivier played the King. I wish I'd seen the play back then -- and I wish I'd seen it twice to see the roles played both ways, had I been old enough in 1960 to appreciate it. As many know, there was a film adaptation of "Becket" in 1964 starring Richard Burton as the Archbishop and Peter O'Toole as the King. I've never seen it, but now I think I need to.

      role. Following a short tour, BECKETT returned to Broadway for a month in the Spring of '61 so critics and
      audiences could see Olivier in the other role opposite Kennedy. (Hope this isn't TOO confusing!)

The program may have been destroyed in 1975 when Gil Fates was putting together the anniversary special because he wanted to use the clip of Douglas from that show but as he wrote, "Douglas remembered the spot, AND HATED IT!". Given how other shows were mishandled when putting that special together (the Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis one from 1954) I suspect that's what happened there.

On a typical hot and miserable day, from our tent city, a few hundred feet from I saw Mr. Bishop, hand in hand with two gorgeous young women walking through our camp. Meeting him was a thrill, most of my buddies were more interested in the stunning ladies, than having a chance for a conversation. Mr. Bishop didn’t go to the Officer’s Club to eat, but went to the working man soldier’s ate in the Mess Dining area. A great guy!

      A correction:
      A true story about Billy Graham in DaNang, Vietnam in the late 1960's. A good friend of mine wanted us to see him (a once in a lifetime opportunity) and drove our Army jeep to where Graham was speaking. When we arrived, there was a parking problem. One of us had to stay behind to secure the jeep. I'd volunteered without any discussion or hesitation to stay, he didn't argue, instead, leaped out of our jeep, and ran towards the Reverend's Soldier's Crusade. Ironically, a few minutes later I heard a calm voice right next to me say, "Are you going inside?" It was 'the one and only' Billy Graham." I quickly responded, "No Sir, my duty is to watch-over this jeep!" Before leaving me, he smiled, blest me and our jeep. After his service and sermon to our troops, my buddy returned distraught and disappointed because of the crowd he couldn't personally meet one of his idolized heroes. I replied, to his astonishment, "Well, if you remained here in your jeep, you would've had a conversation with the Reverend Billy Graham!" My buddy needed shock therapy.
      Let me add, - It was a privilege to meet him, nothing destructive happened to our jeep, and half-a-century later I am still in my odyssey with God upon our beautiful earth. Reverend Graham is an alright and I admired his sincerity, kindness and dedication.

    Here's another instance of the lady panelists standing up to shake hands with a contestant (18:33) -- perhaps in deference to her age? These days, 70 doesn't seem so old, but it was nice that they were so respectful to her.

      It's called manners. A person with good manners would have stood up even if the other person was a child....even if a person is older than you by a year one should learn to respect and treat the other with the utmost, regardless of their job or persuasion.

      Arlene also stood to shake hands with Billy Graham. It wasn't often that the ladies stood for a male guest. And you're right about 70 not seeming so old these days. For some reason back then people seemed to looked much older. She certainly doesn't look like most 70 year old ladies today.

      rcanepulse Elders are not respected in america. No.Go to a hospital and see the dismissive way they are treated. It sickens me. This is a culture that worships youth only ,however I don't treat people with respect if they are douchebags,whether they are 9 or 90. I've known one or two really nasty people who happened to be in their 80's, but I guarantee you they were as nasty in their youth as in their old age. Still ,I agree with you on most of what you said.

      SaveThe TPC Proper manners dictate that the hostess (In this case, hostesses) retain the right to stand as a sign of eminent respect.
      And yes, I realize Miss Francis and Miss Kilgallen weren't technically the hostesses, but in a more 'civilized' time, having been to Finishing School and being possessed of a sense of etiquette, both ladies took it upon themselves to act as such.

      Believe it or not, there was once a place called America where people had respect for elders. Then the "never trust anyone over 30" campaign was injected into the social climate and young people were trained to believe that their 💩 didn't stink and older folks gave diminishing returns on their usefulness. Fifty years later, that America is on the brink of communism, and the leader of the free world will be gone. Guess where that leaves "the free world".

      Just an observation; Dorothy stood up to shake hands with Bishop Sheen, but she remained seated for Rev. Graham.

    How interesting that Bennett mentioned Youngstown, Ohio to JCD in his closing remarks. That's my hometown and I was a little over a month old when this episode was broadcast - although I'm sure I wasn't present when he spoke in Youngstown. :-)
