This is absolutely amazing. And I am not criticizing. I’m a Navy Vet 1990-93 Information on this. The Close in Weapons System is the last line of defense against Missiles. I personally have never seen it used against Jet Aircraft. Although it probably has. But the CiWS supply of Ammo is exhausted after 90 seconds of continual fire. Unless that has changed, which it probably has. When I was in it took 60-90 seconds before it exhausted it’s magazine. And 30 minutes to Load it. Now I’m thinking the Ship is either a Carrier or an Amphibious Helo Carrier. Carriers NEVER SAIL ALONE they always have an escort of Destroyers, Cruisers, and Supply ships. The Destroyers and cruisers can be 500 or more miles from the Carrier. . The CiWS is only used if a missile penetrates the escort ships. Any Hostile Planes would be challenged by the Carriers F/A18E/F Super Hornets. AGAIN I AM NOT CRITICIZING the Video it is a phenomenal piece of work.
The Carrier and Supply Ships are at the center of the Carrier Battle Group. Escort ships surround the carrier at at least 500 miles in the Open Sea.
One More Thing. Fighter Planes weapons have a far longer Range than the CiWS.

In Italy we use 76mm cannons for that, and if DAVIDE/DART system Is avaible, a subcalibrated 42 mm bullet that changes direction in mid air

Sm3 and sm6 missles are the main defense against incoming targets. CIWS is only in case something gets past the defensive missiles and gets close.
Each round of the 20mm ammunition costs $27, so continuous firing for one second would cost $2,970
depends on the round bud.they are not exactly shooting full metal jacket lead core rounds lol.

Another comment I'd like to make: I was in the Navy when these were being installed. They were to intercept cruise missles i.e. Last ditch effort before being hit...
If the can aim for missiles, which are much smaller than aircraft, will they target pilots that bail Out?

Air launched missiles against a ship would be launched from miles away so why would a fighter jet come in so close to a ship?

That's a Wasp class LHD. 3 would be the USS Kearsarge. I was on her for a bit. Doesn't have that many CIWS in real life but it's pretty cool!

This is incredibly realistic and accurate but I was in the Navy and there's no such thing as a ship with that many CIWS guns on them so obviously a video game but still entertaining

So here we go. I hate internet fights. But just for the sake of yea,,,, but no. There are no ships of any kind with 5+ CIWS guns mounted. If I'm wrong then show me.

My grandfather was responsible for that Phalinx system. They designed and built those things at General Dynamics here in Pomona California. Obviously not that exact one. The very first one. Now we have them on most of our ships.

A brilliant system for sure. My dad was the Australian Rep for General Dynamics in the eighties, trying to sell the F-16 against the F-18A. He also got the Phalanx contracts for the Australian Navy. He always had a model Phalanx sitting on his desk, along with the F-111 and the F-16.

all I can think of when I see this is for every few seconds of sustained fire from one of these Vulcan cannons is 40k dollars of our taxes up in smoke.

just a little note the C-RAM & CIWS Do not shoot down aircraft although the CIWS Shoots at incoming aircraft for warning shots the C-RAM & The CIWS only fire at missiles, rockets, And SAM (Surface-to-Air-missiles)
They most certainly can be used against aircraft to saturate space. They would probably more effective against aircraft that is in low formations.

Too bad you cant adjust forward by increments so the gun will fire into the projected path of the plane. I feel like this would reduce the continuous firing by eliminating targets quicker.
They ARE adjusting but the pilots know this and constantly alter their course. I've seen Russian jets avoid CRAMs but helicopters are more vulnerable
The system has to fire "where you'll be" about 3 to 5 seconds from now

Anti ship missiles aren't that clever
I always felt it would be better to pause but continue tracking and fire in intervals so the pilot couldn't predict.

Reminds me of the scene in the movie Blue Thunder when Murphy shoots down an F-16 using Blue Thunder’s .20mm gun. Murphy didn’t use that many rounds. But he was probably close enough to take that shot.
The scene in Hunter Killer comes to mind when the Russian fleet decides at the last minute, to destroy the missiles heading for the Arkansas. I couldn’t help but wonder what if the U.S. Navy had twin .20 or .30 millimeter CWIS phalanx guns instead of one. It will probably be a devastating addition.
The MiG-29 would have launched a missile from like 101 km away from those ships.

The holding down the trigger makes it obvious that is is from DCS game or Warthunder. In real life the barrels would simply melt if the shooter just held down the trigger like that.

not saying i could do better but youd think they would hit shots more often considering you can see the stream constantly and be able to effectively lead the shot

Bc IF it is, idk this seems more like a tax-shredder machine to me. The amount of munition wasted just to shoot down a single target is mind-boggling. It seems that there's still a lot of room for improvement to its targeting system.

Есть такой всепогодный дальний истребитель СУ-27... У него на пилонах могут размещаться аж 4 противокорабельные ракеты. Пустит он 2 ракеты с расстояния 20-30 км, одну может быть успеют сбить, но второй ракетой лодку НАТО он отправит на дно к Посейдону

@@SEDUXXEN У меня на тумбе стоит точнейшая копия СУ-27 flanker с ракетами ближнего и среднего полёта, а также две ракеты класса воздух-воздух, по центру установлены 4 ФАБ по 500 кг. Макет истребителя почти 48 см.
