- Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios coming out of retirement, even for just one event, facing off against one of Smash 4’s current best, playing a high-level match in a game that isn’t even done yet bodes well for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s future.
While it probably won’t be the game that unites both the Melee and Smash 4 communities, Ultimate had a great first showing at E3, all thanks to a storyline years in the making: ZeRo vs Leonardo “MKLeo” Lopez-Perez,.

Armada said he'd try a few tournies and plup said he would try to be the best Ridley and m2k no doubt would as well as hbox who has been less serious in the new games but still competing
Melee gods love the game and if it plays well we may see more players showing up
Ser Smiles “love” is a strong term. M2k and MAYBE Plup will play it, 1000$ says everyone else drops it after a tourney or two in favor of melee.
most of the melee pros won't play it unless it gets some significant changes, which it wont.

+Fusion They said that about Smash 4 too and it was a total lie, there's no reason to believe them based on their track record. Sakurai even said "fundamentally, this is a casual game" which means they will ignore all feedback that has the potential to alienate casuals. It's going to be Smash 4 all over again.
Seeing smash on a esport channel makes me hope that finally this will be something bigger that it is

Trust me zero is out of his retirement. After what sonicfox had said on Twitter I’m pretty sure we’re going to see a lot of hype matches for smash ultimate! If you don’t know what I’m talking about just search sonicfox vs zero on RUclips and you should see it

Kaji chuu it could be. SonicFox I can definitely see him getting bored real quick since smash isn’t the type of fighting game like other fighting games such as Injustice or street Fighters, but I just really wish there’s a lot of new techs that we can bring into tourney’s so it can still substantially contain that hype even after launch.
Kaji chuu I don’t know about that. I think what keeps sonicfox interested in games are his rivals. Go1 in dbfz and Dekillsage in Skullgirls. And guess what, sage is a smash player and sonic’s best friend. I think as long as he grinds with sage he’ll stay interested for awhile.

I feel like that Mango clip at the end was used REALLY out of context. If anything this is the most accepting of a new smash game the melee community has ever had if we are looking from a pro standpoint. Armada is really hopeful as well as Mango as well in another clip (wants more shield stun and hit stun and better wave landing for more combo potential i guess). This really is the best chance so far in finally merging the two communities. Maybe not completely but a good middle ground.
Zero and Leo are really great friends, you could've pointed that out...

I think what he said was that he pretty much practiced entire years of smash for his Evo prize money to be something like a salary that he could have gained at Mcdonalds. Basically, its not that he didnt win any kind of money its just that his routine was so hard that the culmination of his work (which was Evo) only gained him a shitty prize money which he could have gained by working somewhere else for less effort.

Yea melee players are probably gonna stick to melee. But some might crossover and play both. New one looks better than 4 by a mile tho so that’s very cool to see.
I think leffen and mew2king(definitely) might play it the most.

I like how you said that Zero was playing ultimate like ultimate instead of like smash 4. This is one of Zero's great strengths, as he is able to adapt to the general atmosphere of a new game better than everybody else. During his 56 tournament streak, he innovated Diddy's meta in ways no one else was doing at the time, like the faux hoo-hah (up throw up air) and d tilt up smash, things pretty much no one else was doing at the time

Reason there won't be another melee is that all new games will actually be complete works rather than a scrap heap glued together in a year that turns out to be incredible

Yeah, melee is a complete broken game, but it's that broken what makes it really charming.
It's like that cripples or quirky kid that everybody loves, for everything that he is, not just because he's crippled.
And like OP said, game developers don't go to make a broken game on purpose, that's why there's no other game like Melee
If the future for Ultimate is gonna be the same as ZeRo’s future then us Smash fans are in trouble
Incredible video! I'm not so categorical. Mango said that there will be no other Melee but the game can become interesting without being a Melee copy. He is certainly the most hardcore Melee player but other players like Mew2King or Armada want to try Ultimate. Only future will tell us if Ultimate will succeed to unite the two communities, the Sakurai's wish.
I'm still gonna call it a comeback, since that's how it felt watching that live. Also, I did notice Heritage for the Future on going on the arcade cabinet in the background. Good game choice

Hey theScore esports? You forgot to mention ZeRo's sick comeback in the final game in Winners Finals of the Smash Ultimate Invitational. That was also a testament to ZeRo's withstanding prowess despite being retired.

As someone who started with melee, i do wish we can all be United. Right now it looks good, but who knows how it'll look like later.
Gotta say I love the beginning showing ZeRo and Mkleo. Pretty much the future of smash. At least in this case ultimate. Literally the mantle of King passed to Leo. I love it.

ThirtyfourEC Well... He wasn't playing any other Smash game competitively, so it's safe to say he retired from Smash overall. Like ZeRo said, he's not sure he'll come out of retirement for Smash Ultimate either.

I was so hyped when zero won that tournament. I want him to come back so hard but I completely get it when he says it's not worth making your life revolve around it just to get the mediocre prize money. if there was more money in I could see the competition heating up aswell.

Melee is Melee. It will always be the nostalgic fast pace, wacky mechanics feast people love. To reject the Ultimate Smash game just to place the second installment for another year, even though I don't agree with them, just shows alot of dedication.
