  • I tackle the worst computer I have ever tried to clean, and end up going to some pretty extreme lengths to get it usable again.

Wow! Who would have thought that it would still work after the dishwasher and sink wash! Major applause from me!

I used to love Macs all the way thru the G5 era. After that Apple just went in the wrong direction as far as decent, affordable and modular machines. I put a lot of the blame on Jon Ive or whatever his name is.

GPU in these iMacs are bad. I have an iMac 2011 27", i5 3,1 Ghz, and I upgraded GPU to Nvidia Quatro K2100m. I flashed the graphics card so I have brightness control. Added Samsung EVO SSD. I run Big Sur beta on this mchine and it's flying.

You should change GPU and CPU for 2 reasons :
1 : the GPU is very likely to fail, this one is known to fail (i have the same with a dead gpu)
2 : you will be able to install macOS Mojave or Catalina and have no issue at all (and with less patches if not any).
The price for the upgrades really depend on which card or cpu you are going to choose.

If I were to upgrade I would want to go with the best I could, so i would end up with the 780m and try and track down this specific i7 that works with this weak power supply, otherwise it wouldn't be worth it.
