My favorite deck is Halana and Alena because it has a lot of power but also folds to people with interaction. A precon can beat me, but sometimes i get to go off and build very scary boardstates
I’ve had this experience as well, it has led to people having a separate high power deck for if they face the person who is not participating in rule zero discussion and claims to only have this one deck. No fun but at least there is a chance to beat the person who is trying to pubstomp
my lgs has set tables, you call up earlier in the day and say whether you’d like to play at a casual, mid power, or high power table, then they put you there, and it almost always goes smoothly
It's an interesting one, I think my mindset hasn't allowed me to see that people trying to lose would be fun. I guess in this instance, that's something I'd like to know so that I can probably find a different game, I'd want everyone to be trying to win and ideally balanced.
I agree that having a deck that works feels really nice. I don't like to play decka that don't do anything because there's no draw/removal. Unfortunately having a consistent and interactive deck means it may make very very casuals feel unhappy
Personally, winning in casual commander has never really been relevant to me, however I wouldn't really play suboptimally just based on the pod I play with (Though I don't usually have a consistent play group and have played with against a wide range of decks)
How competetive i play depends entirely on the vibes of my group. If ive had a good night and have won a game or 2 i will intentionally throw even if my hand is great. Conversely if ive been losing all night i tryhard. The results of the first game might even have an impact on what deck i run in the second game. My goal when playing with my pod is that everyone feels like they want to get this pod together again.
Even in casual ultimately everyone is trying to win, I mean that is the point of the game, also not a competitive player, the goal is to build many decks so you can have that practice so when you build a new deck you know where the line is: of too fast, too strong, relatively balanced, or underpowered. As you get more experienced in building decks you will gain a stronger understanding through emersion and gameplay, and you will know when you have something that is 'broken' or how to break something. Also accidents happen, combos can happen, it can happen against cards you opponents bring to the table, to many cards exist to know every combo around
I’ve been playing for four years now. What I’ve noticed is that 80% of magic players are toxic and lack any social skills. The 20% of magic players that aren’t complete weirdos are usually nomads that don’t stay at one LGs because again magic players are toxic.
My LGS has casual commander night. Everyone goes home with a pity pack. But if you win, you go to a higher table and might win more packs. If you lose, you move down tables.
My LGS has a mix of regulars who run removal heavy decks so I adapted as well, but every so often a new player rocks up with a precon and they get absolutely destroyed. Then when i try to lower myself to their level I just get blown out before I do anything.
I didn't necessarily say that. When I say I like to win people get mad for playing commander that way, when I say casual normal people say stuff like this. Casual in my mind simply means people having a good time while playing, with little to no stress or try harding.
Welcome to "Squeeky wheel mental gymnastics 101", alternatively "Badly explained sentiment 105". When someone says this, or rather that "casual is about fun, not winning", there are two possible scenarios at play. Either it's the squeeky wheel telling you that they expect or think they deserve to win, and if they don't, it's unfair and not in the spirit of EDH. Or, it's the badly explained notion that they don't care about winning as long as everyone at the table has a good time and gets to do their thing, i.e. have some degree of agency in the outcome of the game.
@@deckdriverMTGI think “tryhard” only exists as pejorative so to use it as part of your definition is a poor choice. It kinda underlines the whole issue people have with the casual crowd that’s vocal online.
Do games where people just want to play "casual" with no expectation of winning actually exist? This just seems like games where players want to win with jank and they want everyone else to play jank so they have a better chance at winning.
I have a tergrid deck that I’ve never won with (mostly due to me playing that salty lady) but I still have fun because my goal each game is to cast contamination as early as possible 😂 🤷♂️
Unless you are running some chaos deck your decks should have the goal of winning imo. Doesnt mean they have to be strong, but in an lgs games shouldnt take over an hour. If you have shit draw the worst case scenario is the game never ends because many people dont have winning in mind and you sit there for 2+ hours. I scoop when people take to long and im not really in the game, but most people get held hostage and wont scoop
uhm, i think you may have misread kodama. "equal or less" means if you play a 6 mana permanent, you can even put a 6 mana permanent on board on top, im sure you already noticed tho ... :\
I avoid accidentally stomping a pod by just intentionally making horrible decisions lol Once I realize I'll easily win it can feel like a waste to end it, since everyone just finished getting setup, so I'll play things out slower than I need, target things suboptimally, etc. I will frequently pacify someone's synergy piece instead of their commander just to give them a chance. Because if I had pacified their commander it might've just been over. Winning in this game doesn't even really feel that good most of the time. I'd rather shape the game into something resembling fun.
I don't agree with the distinction between wanting to win and wanting casual fun. Everybody should be trying to win, no matter what type of casual decks they are playing. At least for me, if a player doesn't even plan to win from the beginning of the game on my table, they are not even playing the game, it's just a disturbance for other people that are trying to play the game.
I agree, I dislike player that don’t swing out unless they are doing a pillow fort which I don’t particularly like but still more valid because they have another win condition. That’s also why I like The Professor and his show, they are almost always swinging in others which makes an engaging game and because one player swings others follow suit.
Gotta love Goad decks, just causing everything to chaos around lol

If only this worked :(. I live in a small town with a small LGS and a lot of people just say `play whatever` then pub stomp.

Yeah, where I live there's exactly one place to play unless I wanna drive far.
@@surplusvalue5497 same. There's no real "rule 0" discussion. It's all kinda clicky and if your usual play group isn't there you're in for a bad time.

I've noticed the exact same thing. Some people can be insufferable when it comes to playing MTG and especially commander
