I suspect that the “incomplete” art book was because it was rushed. If you notice, lots of the material is newer stuff that they had access to. Golden rarely made Con appearances, but Renee Witterstaetter convinced him to make an appearance. He got so much attention by fans and pros alike, that he started doing it regularly. But, at the time he was doing it, he had nothing to promote/sell. I think Renee threw together this book for him to sign/sell. I read shortly after that Renee said they would do a more comprehensive book, but that has yet to happen as far as I know. I made my own hardcover featuring the best of his covers and a digital book featuring my favorite of his story work. I also own several original art pieces because he is one of my all time favorites.

I remember picking up the GI Joe Yearbook (2) and instantly thinking whoa! This was not the Joe experience I was used to having. Michael Golden's Joe adventure was so dynamic, full of action and his characters, so expressive I was just blown away at just how fun it felt.
That is the beauty of this channel, connecting dots I never knew were there. Good stuff.

As a young artist I grew up with Michael Golden's Micronauts. He was a HUGE influence on me. To this day, I want to do everything. I never knew (back then) what his processes were. Now that I know I understand how much more he influenced me than I ever realized.

My uncle had ordered a poster of the image at 5:58 back in the 80's from an ad in a comic. It took 6 months to get for some reason but man once he got it and mounted it on the wall i was so impressed with it.

I think I was first exposed to Michael Golden’s artwork via the various covers he was doing for Marvel, especially the Punisher covers. That Doctor Strange story he drew is probably my favorite sequential job he did that wasn’t the ‘Nam. The ‘Nam 1967 story he drew in the Savage Tales #1 is by far my all-time fave. It’s amazing in black and white.

Met him at a comicon once and said "I love your work" and he said "yeah, what in particular" and I was stumped for an answer - I wasn't really prepared so I blurted out "The Micronauts!" and he rolled his eyes. I slinked away to the next booth - another favorite, Arthur Suydam! I immediately said "I love your work, especially Cholly and Flytrap" and he seemed pleased (even though he was promoting Marvel Zombies). Live and learn.

Truth! Beautiful linework from Golden & Russell, nice coloring by Golden. Even some use of overlays/hold outs. As good as issue 55 was I think this is even better, just too short.

Love it. I'm of a generation introduced to comics in the 80s. This is the artwork that gets me. Golden was the GOAT. I see what is called "anime inspired" art today and am underwhelmed.

It's amazing how much Michael Golden's style changed over the years. I had the first 12 issues of Micronauts and loved that style, but I really prefer his newer, more modern style - much cleaner, clearer, easier on the eyes. I find the less cross-hatching lines the better (which is why I HATE most of the art from the 90's). Golder really understood how to use digital coloring methods to improve his visuals, and not over-do it.

I fondly remember reading Dr. Strange 55 in a TPB as a kid, not knowing that it came out in the 80s and thought that this guy had copied the styles of McFarlane, Lee and Art Adams and taken it to another level, then realized years later everyone copied Golden. His influence is incredible.

I grew up with Micronauts, Avengers Annual, the one Star Wars issue, Marvel Fanfare and so many Golden covers like ROM. His work of the 70s-80s was so curvy and organic. That was a huge influence on me. It's interesting to see his stylistic evolution from all that curvieness to very stiff, hard angles. Reminds me of the trajectory of Milt Caniff and Chester Gould who's styles followed that same change in form.

For me, Golden comes from that “golden” age of the ‘70s and ‘80s when it seemed like the artists all had this friendly spirit of oneupmanship, finding new ways to draw and tell a story and bring in influences from outside comics, and in the case of Mike, test the limits of what could be done with the limited coloring palette and tools of the time. He did what looked like digital coloring before that even existed. But artwork aside, I think what blew me away most in the book being discussed is him saying how he never uses photo references; that once he sees, say, a tank, he can simply draw it from memory. Coming from the man who set the bar for decades to come regarding realistically detailed machinery, vehicles, weapons, outfits, backgrounds of any kind, that made my eyes grow as big as Marionette’s when I read it, lol.

I tend to gravitate towards the middle period, where he was doing covers for otherwise low-intensity art Marvel comics like Rom and Defenders. The later stuff is admittedly boggling at times, but the roundness dissolves and the line is more geometric. I guess I prefer the depth being more in the line art than as digital effects. One of the most impressive pieces he did was the cover for Fantagraphics' X-Men Companion (1982), that Art Adams did a later interpretation of.

I had no idea he continued so far past when I was in comics. I didn't catch if he's still going? He's definitely a cool artist, but I can see why he didn't land on my radar when Sinnott, Milgrim and Perlin were monthly putting out Defenders and Ditko's reprints were giving me my Doctor Strange fix. But I will have to give his newer stuff a looksee.
