China Has Banned “Effeminate” Men | Gen China

- In 2021, China's broadcasting regulator issued a ban on 'niang pao' or 'sissy men' from appearing on TV and video streaming sites. The derogatory term is used to describe men with effeminate looks. Do these rules signal a return to more traditional notions of patriarchy, masculinity and even nationalism?

Also the juxtaposition of men go to war and sissies live in peace on mobile phones. Such a extreme to bring out slightly feminine k-pop stars and gender swapping in the same argument to make all feminine things illegal for men, with the argument that who will go to war if men grow soft?? As good as it is to bring healthy limits to bending gender roles, this does seem to hide some pro-war bias underneath.
I find it odd that China considers long hair feminine when culturally the Chinese kept their hair long for centuries before western influence. Edit: Yes I know long hair is feminine, but I'm referring to a time when it was considered typical for a man unlike now.

No matter where you go in the world, it seems like there's always this paradox; Tradition is strong enough to stand the test of time by itself but is fragile enough to constantly be threatened unless propped.
Or traditions have stood the test of time because people stood guard over them and took decisions with the interest in protecting those traditions(however they deemed best). Not being Chinese so I don’t know the culture but apparently they dislike effeminate men being a societal model they want men to follow. They see it as something they want to contain before it becomes engrained in their culture like how they see it in Japanese and Korean culture.
Tradition isn't beneficial in of itself. Historically, slavery, genocide, domestic violence, child brides, etc. have all been part of the tradition of many societies. Do you think that they serve the public good just because they existed for thousands of years of recorded history (and likely long before recorded history)?
Or does it make sense to evaluate things on their own merits? How are other people, or society in general, harmed by some men being "effeminate?"
@@ENB90 - You think that that's an accurate assessment of Japanese and Korean cultures? Here's a hint: it isn't. It's meant to make a certain subset of western society hate China and Chinese culture so that they will support future conflict. There is no other reason for this video.
Well China hasnt had a war in a very long time, unlike US and other countries.
I think what this short documentary completely fails to address is that there is no one traditional chinese masculinity, but rather more nuanced roles. Especially in imperial China there were a lot of good associations with idealised more feminine men, who tend to be better educated in the liberal arts such as poetry as opposed to typical military leader type men
That's curious. In the west poetry is not exactly associated with a feminine role.
Even the generals get romanticized with being poets and being generally "learned", even if they weren't in reality. Just a completely different view
it's the winners that write history...
Not all true. Warriors in ancient China who were well versed in poetry weren’t regarded as feminine. IT was seen as an attractive trait. “A man that is strong, able to provide for his family/people while also being good in a more subtle thing such as poetry?” Thats attractive
Does that mean Chinese men should be effeminated? no!!

@@joey3291 my dude, he literally said 'expression'. Tf you mean keep it to yourself.
I don't accept the premise that supposedly effeminate men are not men. However, looking at Chinese demographics, it doesn't appear as though running out of men ought to be their main concern.
Or running out of desirable men. Population growth must maintain zero sum at minimum.
One young person working won’t be able to support 3 old people on government medical for example.
In the face of modern challenges and the complexity of the modern world, much of the world is shifting hard to the right. "Tradition," simple "solutions" etc. are appealing to a lot of people, in addition to scapegoating and bigotry just to try to make oneself feel better. It's not good for any country, or for relations between countries. Countries controlled by "strongmen" will very likely continue to lead them into war and to attack their own people, to show how "strong" they are.
Because apparently you're unaware of what social engineering is or what fourth generational warfare is
@@Anonymous-yc9fl oh go then, enlighten me.
The funny thing is a large chuck of these women love "feminine". Just look at the media and content they produce, look at how they go gaga at idols etc. China is shooting themselves in the foot. If you think these woman are going to go from loving their femboys, to uber masculine men, then your crazy.
The irony here is that nothing comes off as more gay than men who obsess over other men's manliness.

I think that's called masculinity?
Men being themselves and expressing their style is now banned. Fucking ridiculous
I hate it too, but the ban isn’t that big tbh. If you check out any Chinese show right now, the actors are all wearing makeup and lip tints. It’s vague and the enforced in weird ways (dyed hair is banned, but guys still appear on national tv with dyed brown or blonde hair). On social media, there’s a biggg gay community, but people use slang and other words for hashtags sadly :(

I swear both the US and china are regressing just in completely different ways...
Not really. Only China is going archaic
By getting rid of weak and useless men, China in your definition is regressing? This speaks a lot about your priorities lmao.
This is never about woman/man, it's about freedom in GOD's realm, not the religion one
They are not, they are moving forward your brain is left in the past.
The US regressing isn't as bad as China. Unlike China we have (50) States with the people having the right to vote and decide what we want for our people in specific areas. It may seem bad, but it's a whole lot better than a 1 child policy, under 1 rule, and censorship. We take for granted what others wish they have. In China's case their 1 child policy made too many men with no idea of what lie ahead.
I totally agree with China. Let common sense return back to human life.
Absolutely disgusting...let people live their lifes please..
An additional factor about these "effeminate" men is that a lot of them, specifically the singers you see on TV, are directly influenced by Korean/Japanese pop culture. Chinese audiences watch these men because they are familiar in the sense that they are Chinese whilst emulating Korean/Japanese pop culture; an example is the show "Idol Producer". Banning them will mean that Chinese audiences will probably turn away from Chinese media and to foreign media such as Korean/Japanese for this sort of content.
Considering China's relationship with Korea and Japan I don't know if that's what they want to do lmfao.
Or conversely, perhaps part of the motivation is fear that 'traditional' Chinese culture is being influenced too much? I can't help imagining the CCP leadership as a sort of Chinese-equivalent to the boomer stereotype, ranting about how much better everything was back in their day and trying to ban anything they find new and strange.
I would agree, but the overwhelming majority of the Chinese people only have access to what the CCP allows them to.
So while some people will turn more away from CCP media, most won't.
I think ultimately it will have the intended outcome of trying to further divide the Chinese people from their neighbors. Which the CCP obviously wants since part of its image as a world power is being aggressive towards it's neighbors.
@@lordlee6473 Oh gurl please: DO get over yourself....

@@Khabasalainganba exactly
@@Khabasalainganba 1. Its what girls want. The entire Idol culture revolves around the idea of the ideal wants of each gender. If a guys wants girls to be Tomboyish, it would revolve around that and vice versa for girls.
2. Standards of masculinity is so broad that saying that one thing is masculine or feminine is impossible. For instance: Pink was once used by men as a status symbol. Now its associated as a symbol for women.
3. Their standards of fashion of masculine basically equivalents to "Being a 50 year old dad from the 1950s"
The problem is associating "fighting spirit" as an inately masculine quality. Inner strength is not masculine or feminine, it goes much deeper than that. "Strength" and bravery are not measured by a short haircut, big muscles or beard.
It may be more so linked to how much soy sauce one consumes in a day.
They do, however, certainly help. Look at how much the strongest woman in the world (whom has trained and lifted and built strength her whole life" can lift versus how much the strongest man can lift. It's a biological issue not an opinion or hopeful wishes issue.
But in one way, the sex difference is stark: Men are physically stronger than women, on average. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that men had an average of 26 lbs. (12 kilograms) more skeletal muscle mass than women. Women also exhibited about 40 percent less upper-body strength and 33 percent less lower-body strength, on average, the study found.
The researchers found that height and weight differences between men and women could explain only about half of the difference in strength. Researchers reporting in 1993 in the European Journal of Applied Physiology(opens in new tab) found that men's brawn could also be attributed to a larger cross-section in individual muscle fibers. [5 Myths About Women's Bodies]
And a 2006 study in the same journal revealed that men had much stronger grips than women - the difference was so big that 90 percent of the women scored lower than 95 percent of the men. The team also looked at highly trained female athletes who excelled at sports requiring a strong grip, such as judo or handball. Though these women did have a stronger grip compared with other women, they still performed worse than 75 percent of the men on this task.
In general, men are also faster than women. The fastest woman in the world, Florence Griffith Joyner, ran the 100-meter dash in just 10.49 seconds in 1988, and that record remains unbroken. Yet her fastest time wouldn't have even qualified her for the men's 2016 Olympic competition, which requires competitors to finish the 100-meter sprint in 10.16 seconds or less.

You must be weak. Only a weak person would say that. Or someone who is clearly delusional.
Nice idealistic rant. But reality paints a different picture
China has a subtle traditional philosophy of governance where leaders do not rigidly enforce every regulation without any room for flexibility. Instead, they leave some gray areas for people or matters that may not align perfectly with the mainstream values of the country to exist. While these regulations may be strict when initially released, they tend to relax significantly after a certain period of time.
Men must be strong and ready to fight for the country. Sissy men are wrong
That's what the founding fathers of USA intended, they wrote about it a bit. It obviously didn't go that direction.
Yes we call that authoritarianism. Hardly subtle or unique. Making everything illegal and then selectively prosecuting things to target specific groups and individuals at specific times
it is not intended to be loosely enforced but rather impossible to enforce. the vast geography of china leads to inevitable variation with local rulers often having more power than national leaders. this also leads to corruption as well.
china is already short and their eyes are kind of effeminate so having femboys on tv is only gonna make it worse
Regarding the old man who appears @3:30 saying Korean men are sissies. He must think everyone looks and acts like BTS. In reality, all Korean men have to serve in the military. Sports and martial arts are huge. Korean Zombie, Choi Doo Ho, Chu Sung Hoon, Son Heung Min, and on and on. Also, the old man doesn't realize that his "we need more men" philosophy is probably at least part of the problem in China.... China already has too many dudes and not enough women. So dont be surprised when some of the dudes start acting like women.
Also, funny how he thinks all American movies are blow em up shoot em up. Ever heard of Brokeback Mountain?

I studied and also taught high school in China. It's hilarious that they're afraid of "sissy" culture making their men weak. From what I have seen, there are two things that are ACTUALLY doing that - the unforgiving education system and culture that literally keeps kids indoors and discourages any type of extracurricular activity or any distraction from studying; and the constant awareness of the CCP and people growing up knowing they will be violently subdued if they step out of line. I'm pretty sure online gaming addiction is a much more common phenomenon than boys and men walking around in skirts. And unlike the latter it's actually bad for people. BIG EYEROLL.
better than American and British systems though, where people are just way too fat to be considered men (or even women)
The gov. are very aware of both and that's why they already started limiting the hours per week minors are allowed to play video games and also starting to shut down the entire private tutoring industry for the past couple years. I wish Chinese families emphasized sports and physical fitness more, that would natural make a big portion of men more masculine.

The hairstyles you see of 'martial' historical Chinese men are distinct from a subset of modern hairstyles that would be labelled as 'not masculine'. @Black King ohh you just showed your third world mindset.
One can be feminine and still be strong, your mind is the weak one.
I am Chinese, and I would like to explain from another angle why Chinese people, especially traditional Chinese people, are worried about such things. China is a nation of history and we have great respect for history books. But according to Chinese history books, when men wear women's clothes and behave in an increasingly feminine way, it is a precursor to the imminent collapse of the dynasty. There are plenty of such accounts and arguments in the history books.
““末喜冠男子之冠,桀亡天下。”“男女之别,国之大节,故服物异等,赞币不同”,“遍身女衣者,尽是读书人”,“男穿女衣,亡国之兆”……”"When Muxi crowned a man's crown, Jie died in the world." "The difference between men and women, the country's great festival, so the clothes should be different "All gentelmen in academia are wearing women's clothes! cry !," "Men wearing women's clothes, the omen of the collapse of the country" ......I don't care if this argument is valid or not, but it does have a profound impact on the Chinese psyche. Chatting about it.
I remember about 30 years ago, when I first went to university and came to Beijing, one of the most open-minded city in China at that time, I saw a man dressed a bit like a woman. Several of my classmates from conservative rural provinces commented that if this man had turned up in our area, he would have been disabled by now because everyone would have beaten him up. I was feeling a bit shocked, and while I don't like males who dress like that either, it's not like I would beat them to disability. I mention this to illustrate two points, firstly, there is a fair degree of resistance to the feminisation of males in our nation, and secondly, after all, society is evolving, and now of course traditionalists will still be offended, but wherever they are, at least they won't be beaten up.
Honestly, for myself and most of the older Chinese around me, especially men, we have been complaining about this for a long time. We are afraid of it and we cannot do anything about it. When the CCP decided to take measures to control the situation, everyone was very supportive and said: this is long overdue!
Just to be clear… banning the show word of honor has nothing to do with “effeminate”. As a fan of the show, I actually looked up pretty hardcore, and it was due to one of the lead actor controversy. So plz do fact check better next time.
Essentially… rules and regulations to ensure an endless supply of mindless soldiers and factory workers.
They already have that, they have 1.4 BILLION people. The US only has like 300 million people. If it's one thing China is not short on it's people.
As opposed to Entitled Cucks and Pansies? I mean you make their argument FOR them. lulz.
Yup. That's their goal.
They want to be the only dominant power in the world. And they need a lot of bodies to do it
Yup and call it the “fighting spirit”!
That isn't necessarily masculine though. The 'Rebellious spirit' is actually not what you'd want if you need mindless workers. So in your paradigm they'd actually not want to push masculinity too far.
I found it sad when he said he chose to cut his hair, stop wearing earrings, and overall conform to the stereotypical masculine ideal look according to the company he started working for because he didn't truly choose that, he felt he had no other choice.he even went on to say he felt comfortable and more himself before making those changes but the problem was always other's reactions and treatment towards him. Life is so short for people to not be able to be themselves.

“Easier times just make them more visible” that’s literally the problem. These people are privileged and lucky they don’t go through any hardships in their life. They’ve never had to utilize their ‘masculinity’ because they live in a world where nearly everything is given to them on a silver platter. They don’t hunt, they don’t work, they don’t live in neighborhoods where people will beat them to the curb for looking like that. These people take advantage of their privilege, thinking they have the right to be a degenerate. Was being ‘normal’ really too much to ask for these people? Despite having all this luxury? They are not only ungrateful, but they are also unwise.
Since we're being delusional... Regardless of my salary I identify as a wealthy person that lives on a yacht and I need the government's help to make it real.
Can't blame them.
As a Chinese American, this is the part of the culture and thoughts that I despise to a great deal. The toxic masculinity in China and it's old self-deprecating system. I've never had a low-toned voice, most of the time people would say is feminine. It's not something one can change. I took up smoking because I hated my own voice hoping that it would scratch up my voice and make it less high-pitched. I've never been an active person. I love playing games and being indoors. I used to love being active but something about the dirtiness of the outside world scarred me from enjoying things more masculine like bugs and such. Things like my own voice is out of my control but China will see as, "oh why is your voice so high?" It's not like I can change that.. well maybe with surgery and I'm all for surgery if it makes the person feel better. But I don't feel like surgery will make me feel better.
I don't often wish the worst on my worst enemies, but Xi- I wish the worst of the worst for you. The absolute sickest, most gruesome and cruelest this planet has to offer for you.
Also, why does one thing there's so much hidden LGBT community in China... I'm sure it's not the case but the overly want of having men in past generations and seeing so many men in the culture definitely did have an effect. China's want for males being born and the want to *not* have a daughter.. it's the repercussion of that old ideology. Though it might not be the case as much now, it definitely did have an impact whether they want to acknowledge it or not.
And though there's a heavy acknowledgement on men in Chinese society. In the family hierarchy, we do look up to the eldest female in the family very much.. at least from biographies and my own family experience. That's the educated assumption I can guess.
Honestly, it just feels like the older generation is just holding onto what they lost. "Preserving the culture otherwise its lost" just feels like a last attempt. You can preserve culture while still moving forward. But the way this old man wants is to keep China in its past because those were 'the glory days'.
