  • For decades, evangelical missionaries have come to Brazil's Amazon in search of new Christians - but indigenous tribes are fighting back. VICE News went to the border of the Javari Valley to find out why it's so hard to keep missionaries out - and why some tribes want them back in.

By the way, uncontacted peoples are also called "indigenous peoples in voluntary isolation". I want to mention this because "uncontacted" implies that these tribes are not aware of the outside world. They are not stupid, they just want to be left alone (which should be respected).

well, a catholic priest would probably tell him that if he didn't tell him, his soul would be destined for the shadowy realm of limbo, and have no chance of attaining heaven and the glory of god. official doctrine is you gotta know and love jesus to go to heaven, and that is the place you are supposed to want to go, not limbo.

When I went on a mission trip in 1996 to Matamoros Mexico with my youth group we did a similar thing to this. That trip was the beginning of me losing faith in church. 3 or 4 years after that trip I was out of church completely. It felt really wrong what we were doing down there. They were living so poorly and instead of helping them in ways that were helpful we were just trying to change their beliefs. I also realized on that trip you can’t justify changing religion for morality because those people were already kinder and sweeter than American Christians.

I grew up in a Baptist/Evangelical church and met many missionaries before they went on their missions to Africa or South America. Without fail missionaries are the most unsettling people to be around. The himbo missionary that they talked to was a perfect representative. He was disrespectful, picking his nails, rolling his eyes because he knew he was talking to someone he couldn't manipulate and lie to.

      "I Was Saved"
Times go by but Memories Never Fade, I was Sitting in a Cell Where Memories are Never Made
Wishing on the Time and Wishing they still were, But it seems so Hard when my Mind was just a Blur
Doing what I want, Whenever, Whenever I Pleased, Only got me Stuck in this Cell, Down on Bended Knees
Begging for Forgiveness from the God Above, But he Told me He'd Never Leave Me Nor Forsake Me in the Name of Love
And Thats when I knew that Gods here to Save and not Here to Kill, And If You Follow His Word then You'll be Doing His Will
Cuz I Just Recently Came and I'm here to State, That the Bible Is the Answer to this Present Date
Please Lord be with Me as I Write this Song, Cuz If it Weren't for You, I'd be Doing All Wrong
For the Life I Lived was Full of Evil and Hate, But Because Your Mercy and Grace, It was Never too Late
"I Was Saved, I Was Saved, Thank You Lord, I Obeyed, I Was Saved, I Was Saved, Thank You Lord, I Obeyed"
Thank God for the Day, Thank God for the Night, Thank God for Telling Me to do Whats Right
Cuz If it Weren't for You, I'd Still be on the Street, Suffering Through the Trials, And Barely Trying to Eat
Thank You God for Each and Every Day, and the Gift you Gave Me to Humbly Pray
Before I Met You, My Life Was Full of Strife, But I can Honestly Say That You Have Changed My Life!
      "2Blessed2beStressed"
I'm 2 Blessed to be Stressed so put me to the Test cuz I'm as tough as the rest and I dont even Flex my Chest
It's just the way of my life, ever since I found the Lord I been going through Trials and Strife
But I'm still looking to the sky knowing what's above, knowing everytime I pray Peace and Love descends like a Dove
Which keeps me ready for the fight and keeps my eyes strait and narrow , so everytime the devil tries to tempt me he gets shot down by my arrow
If your catching my drift and your feeling what I'm writing, then let's all join together and bring some Wrath to this Titan,
For satan is his name and Hate is the game, In which we need to Conquer and bring Shame to his Fame
For he's the Trickster of this world here to Destroy everything in his path, here to kill the Love and clean up the Aftermath
So if your feeling down and out or inside feel so Hollow, Christ will be right there, Knocking, Saying "Follow"
      "Spare the Rod"
Life is so Strange but I'm right on Que, I'm Keeping it so True in Plain View I Thought You Knew
That I Stand for the Good, I may be from the Hood but Don't Hate cuz you Wish You Could Touch what I Got
Which is not a Lot, That Will not Rot, That Will Stand Tall and not Fall on any Call but Mine
It's a Heavenly Sign and Ima Stand in Line Til the Day I Die It's Fine
So I Take this Pen to this Paper, with Victory in Sight, Most People Live in Darkness, Well I Walk in Light,
Let me Teach you a Little Bit about my Faith and how I Roll, When I Accepted Christ I was Given Grace to my Soul
We're not Perfect, We're just Forgiven, and thats a Word from the Wise, If you would just Open your Eyes, You will Escape your own Demise
We're Thankful Lord, that when we Fall we can Begin Anew, If we Humbly Confess our Sins then Turn and Follow You
Courage is a Fear that has Said It's Prayers, Without Saying your Prayers, It's Nothing but Nightmares
Gods Law shows us a Need that only Gods Grace can Supply, So I look up to the Heavens, In which its Strength I Rely
God Gives us the Gift of Time to use as Best we can, To Live each Moment in his Will and According to his Plan
The Point is Life is Short, So Live Life for God, Because if your Dont, He Certainly Wont Spare the Rod!💯

Vice audience news, I would like to offer an alternative take on this: I am Brazilian and I've been to the Amazon a few times in my life. My family is originally from there. The contact between native Brazilians and European descendants is way more nuanced than this video suggests. When the Portuguese and other Europeans came to Brazil, they aligned with different tribes that were at war with each other. Native Brazilians were not living in peace, in harmony with nature, or any of that. They were just as destructive as people in any other part of the world. And so are they today. Granted, Europeans had no right to take away their land or to impose their beliefs. However, contact between different people is way more complicated than this video suggests. Brazilian religion is a mix of Catholicism, African and Native beliefs. Rest assured, if things continue to go the way they are, there will be a Native Brazilian branch of Christianity that will leave American Evangelicals puzzled.

And you wish to keep them in the ignorance of their cultures. But these people do not live the romantic but simple lives that many appear to think they live. They are suffering. The Christians want to bring them out of their poverty, their backwardness, and illness. They are not taking illnesses to them - not as an emblematic aspect of ministry. I suspect some people wish the Christians to simply give them money while leaving them in darkness. The Christians wish to teach, heal, and introduce them to the God Who wishes to save them from hell. Say what you will against them. I will continue supporting them. When was 16 my church went on a missions trip to Campinas, Brazil. We painted the same orphanage that every church group painted. We created attachments with the kids that we broke. I don’t think we made a difference at all. What DID happen is that the American missionaries put two locals of extremely poor character in charge of some of us. They were barely associated with the church and the missionaries knew that they were not safe to be around. They knew that these locals were there to gain access to Americans in order to exploit us. The missionaries just thought that involving them would help convert them. My 16 year-old-self and another girl were taken by these two - their names were Tiago and Bisqüí - to the empty parking lot of a soccer stadium parking lot. Two people were waiting for us. A man and a woman. I was terrified. They checked us out. I spoke a little bit of Portuguese at the time but not enough to know what was going on. I had horrible acne and I was a sweaty mess. I kept looking at my friend and trying to communicate with my eyes that I was very scared- something was wrong. They didn’t speak to us at all- just to the locals. Finally - the two people said something and we were rushed back into the car very suddenly. I still don’t know what happened. We told one of the other long-term missionaries what had happened to us and she started freaking out. She said that they had taken us to the worst neighborhood of Campinas and that we could have been kidnapped, raped, or murdered. She still did nothing. I finally sat down and told the story to an actual Brazilian woman who was helping with the trip and she was the first person to take it seriously. Tiago and Biqüí were banned from being in charge of any more of us kids. But I still don’t know what happened on that trip. I joke that I was almost kidnapped because that’s what it felt like. My gut at the time told me that we were in an incredible amount of danger. It is still something I think about from time to time. I’m still not a fan of missions trips for this reason, among others. We were not equipped to help in any way, and neither were the folks in charge.

My people are indigenous to the Nile Valley and we have our own practices which are very similar to the indigenous tribes around the world, as most indigenous tribes have similar practices. I was amazed when I read the native Americans have the same spirituality my people pratice. As an African woman, it no longer made any sense to me to uphold and preach the religion of the colonizers who invaded our continent and forced their religion and killed many people in the name of "God" and Christianity. These people had a plan to wipe out the spiritual practices of the indigenous people which we have still preserved from the times of living in Egypt. Nobody has any right to enter our land and disrespect my ancestors when you were the ones who were uncivilised. To hell with these scumbags and their bibles and if I ever encounter these people I will personally make sure they never enter my country again.
I will no longer be replying to the simple minded ignorant people who do not know that Christianity is NOT native to East Africa. Religion in itself means to be tied back and that I will no longer be. We are spiritual cosmic beings, my people have always known we are. These religions are like the bubonic plague to our Motherland and to claim Christianity is native to Africa is an insult. Ethiopia was part of Kush by the way so Christianity is not native to this region either and I suggest many of you should also read into the plagiarism of the Bible, the Black Madonna from Egypt whom the pope still worships until today, the similarities of ancient practices and the Bible and you will see that the Bible is simply plagiarised from Ancient African Spirituality. The truth will always prevail, and we Africans are now waking up to the spells the deceptions of these false ideologies that have been twisted. You can stay there if you would like, but many of us are free. We are no longer bound.

I was born and raised in a Christian evangelical household, 99.99% of my family from both sides is evangelical and I was told that if I did something wrong, God was going to punish me. I always thought that that was wrong if they also told me that God was love I questioned everything they said about the Bible. When I was at school, the same happened I couldn't really understand why horrible things were done in the name of God. With baptism as well, my parents always told me that it was something that "we" Christians felt and when we were ready the I could get baptized... That moment never came to me and my brother and I were still forced to do it, my little sister was the only one who saved herself from that as we moved out of the neighborhood and stopped going to church (they also forced us to go to every service, as punishment) I had some traumatic experiences happening to me back in 2014 and I decided to 'stop' believing in God, I felt stressed having to attend church when I didn't even felt comfortable with the people, they were not nice... I consider myself agnostic now, I can't forget what I was taught for most of my life, but after I made my decision to stop going to church, I felt so much better. I hope indigenous people get more support and win! Is not fair and is disrespectful that they are forcing their beliefs on them

And please don't fear a hell, there is no burning hell, it's just a narrative they made up to terrorize children and people. If anything, when you do bad stuff here on earth, you basically live in hell right now, because you cannot have and feel love at the same time, both don't coexist.
I questioned Catholicism in Poland for the first time at 9 years old, when I rightfully confessed to my priest that I had not sinned since the last time (which I hadn't as I was an angel of a child) and he started ranting and jelling that I should stop lying and we are all sinners and bal bla bla, I felt betrayed. I detached myself from then on slowly, after we moved to Germany did not go to church at all and years later when I had to pay church taxes I officially dropped out at 25. Even though the church sometimes does good stuff, I can give that charity directly, I don't want to fund some mind terrorists, child abusers and pedophiles. The only thing I find enjoyable nw are some stories and churches for the sake of art, architecture and occasionally music.

I find it rather disgusting when Christians (not even real christians) say things like you'll go to he'll if you don't convert and other things. I'm a Christian myself and people like this give us such a bad reputation, like no ones going to want to be a Christian after all this hate and resentment you show! I find it rather disgusting and humiliating. I went on a missions trip myself and all we did was serve, we handed out food to homeless, built houses, and taught kids English. We would talk to people and connect with them. I find this rather ridiculous the amount of hatred some Christians have. And they aren't even Christians if they're doing this 🙄🙄

Recently, an amiga of mine, a Huichola of that indigenous tribe of Mexico, revealed to me that her life was put in danger during the 1990s, by a governments program had an IUD placed in her without her permission after giving birth to her first child. This was a government policy that I don’t think reflects the current Mexican government’s attitude about Mexico’s indigenous. But during that period, it was an obvious effort at genocide of Mexico’s indigenous peoples. These IUDs would rot and oxidize in the women, causing many to die said my friend. She herself suffered damage to her womb from the IUD that was there without her knowledge. She is currently struggling to pay the medical bills that are the result of surgery she needed after giving birth to her second child.
Bolsinaro is obviously against the indigenous of Brazil, and would like nothing better than to have the missionaries enter the Amazon and infect those not immunologically prepared to meet the onslaught…

Similarly happened to the people of Puerto Rico when the US government used our women as guinea pigs to test out hormonal birth control. The birth control had several times higher hormone levels than they do now and cause several women to die, many to suffer blood clots, cancers and depression. They also performed forced sterilization and hysterectomies on women if they already had two or more kids. It's terrible what white men have done to minority communities all over the world. It's hard to believe it still goes on til this day, but clearly it does.

Things like medical aid aren't supposed to be offered with strings attached, it's supposed to demonstrate the love of Yahweh/Jesus, period. If they'll listen to you about Jesus, fine, but you don't withhold aid in exchange for an audience. There's a lot about the church that disturbs me these days, it makes being atheist a bit easier. The increase in Christian nationalism is really disturbing as well. The Zealots tried to make Jesus king by force and he escaped from them, Peter cut off the ear of a Temple Guard to protect Jesus from crucifixion, but he scolded Peter and healed the guard. Jesus could have become an earthly ruler, but he didn't. And when he left, he commanded his followers to make disciples, voluntary. The fact that people could refuse was demonstrated in his teachings for them to go through the towns, door to door. He didn't tell them to set up a voting majority to use political power to enforce biblical laws. The people of the church have become so warped.

This documentary begins with the assumption that evangelicals are wrong and native cultures are good. They assume also that it is a wonderful and gratifying thing to be a missionary. That missionaries are self-centered, bigoted, and evil. That it would be grand to live in a remote tribe where you wore beautiful feathers and didn't need clothes. That everyone in these tribes treats each other well, and that missionaries are destroying paradise on earth.
    How naïve.
Deeper study reveals that the lives of tribal people are anything but pretty and happy. Fear and abuses abound.
Deeper study of the contributions of missionaries shows the opposite of the view expressed. Although poor and helpless in most ways, they have managed to not only bring medicine and literacy to much of the world, but have risked their lives to end "quaint" practices like:
    suttee (widow burning)
    human sacrifice
    foot-binding
    twin-killing
    cannibalism
    child prostitution
    caste system
    total male domination
And it is Christian missionaries who brought peace between warring tribes, and protected native rights against predators in such far-flung places as Hawaii, Brazil, Irian Jaya and Africa.
I will give you this: perhaps more care does need to be given to prevent bringing in diseases. And, current mission thought is that it is much better for mission work to be done by insiders than overseas missionaries - except for special help.
Yet - we don't see hordes of atheists either moving to these "ideal" areas to enjoy their benefits, or risking their lives help others to the degree that missionaries do.
As C.S. Lewis said, "Those who did the most good in this world are precisely those who thought most of the next."

It really is an eye opener when you see it from the other side. I left the church when the minister blamed me for my husband beating me. I went to another church for help, and he made passed at me. Men are hard enough to trust in the first place, but I certainly do not trust any man who is religious.
I wish I could comment freely here, but if I told the truth about the horrors of religions folks, I'd be kicked off. I can't even watch this it is such a trigger.
Anytime I see someone coming toward me that has a cross around their neck or on their ears, or tattooed to their arms, I walk the other way. They stopped coming to my door because I said things they didn't want to hear.

24 God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. 30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”
    (Acts 17:24-31 NKJV)
God gave the 10 Commandments to show us his standard of Holiness and Good, and all of us have broken his law by doing the things that he hates such as Lying, Stealing, Murder, Adultery, Blaspheming God's name, Sexual immorality and many more.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
    (Romans 3:23)

18 Let sinners be driven away into Hades, even all the nations that forget God.
    (Psalms 9:18 LXX)
8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
    (Revelations 21:8)
7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
    (Jude 1:7)
But the Good news is the Gospel, and the Gospel is this, that God sent his only begotten son Jesus Christ into the world so that through him the world might be save from sin and from the Wrath of God, so put your trust in Jesus Christ and have faith in him, confess that he is Lord the Son of the living God, give your life to him.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
    (John 3:16)
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
    (Romans 10:13)
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
    (Acts 4:12)

I am sorry for what you and your ancestors have endured in the name of Christianity... Allow me to narrate some history. After Christ ascended to heaven, after his resurrection, the disciples started preaching the Gospel to other people. The disciples were Jewish. So as they preached to various communities, they erroneously started imposing their cultural laws and norms into the Gospel; demanding that everyone who wants to believe must also practice Jewish laws and customs. This was a grave mistake. The Gospel is enough. And Paul rebuked them strongly. The same keeps on happening throughout history as the Gospel is preached. Missionaries bring their own cultures, believing it to be more cultured, refined and superior to the people being reached. They bring their education, way of dress, food, language etc mixed in with the Gospel of salvation. This is a grave error. The Gospel is enough. "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned...." And this is the gospel - That God Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth sent His only begotten Son, Yeshuah the Messiah, that He came in the flesh from heaven, he lived among us, preaching about God's Kingdom for 33 years in Israel, ( at some point he lived in Africa, Egypt), He was eventually condemned and killed by crusifixion though He was blameless. However, God Almighty, through His power raised Yeshuah from the dead. This was witnessed by many people. He ascended up into heaven in the sight of many disciples and sits now at God's right hand.... Like l plead with all I speak to, don't allow man's errors to keep you away from your free gift of salvation which your loving Creator offers you. Christ came for YOU.

He was promptly slaughtered by the tribesman. And they left his body on the beach as a warning to others. The tribe is fully aware of the outside world and have decided for themselves that they want no part of it. The ship and crew got in serious trouble for their part. The missionary's parents understood and stated on record that they knew that they would not be able to retrieve their son's body. Overall, I view missionary work as an arrogant disrespect for other cultures and I cannot believe that in light of knowing all of the ills associated with colonization that we are still doing this 💩!

That's so odd to me. No one I knew doing missionary work ever conditioned helping people on the people doing something. In my experience, it's the exact opposite, whether you're helping people where you live or around the world. You can't throw a Bible at an alcoholic who's face-down in a ditch. You have to pick him up, give him dry clothes, warm food, a place to sleep; and when he asks why you'd help him, then you can tell him.
I'm sure there are selfish people who go on mission trips, but that doesn't mean it's a common motive. For example, I know a couple who were missionaries in an African country for 25 years. They both had malaria, one had dengue fever, they were carjacked multiple times, and they had to flee their house in the middle of the night at least three times when militants came over the wall with machetes. They could've gotten on a plane home anytime they wanted, but they loved their community. The husband "adopted" the children of widows to stop the boys from being taken and forced to become soldiers, and to stop the girls from being taken into domestic and sexual slavery for the fighters. (In the area, if a child didn't have a male guardian, they were fair game to be taken by local leaders. The husband who "adopted" them didn't take them away; he was a stand-in male guardian so that they wouldn't be taken from their mothers. He also helped provide for them.)
They retired to the States as they became in increasingly poor health as they got older. They live in a one-room house. They forewent having children of their own, and they have no retirement account. But they are visited on occasion by one of the children who was able to live the life they wanted and eventually travel to or live in the States because they weren't forced to fight or bear children after their fathers died.

There's two types of evangelical missions. One, is a group which is there to actually help build houses and maybe evangelize through a sermon when the missionaries go to a church service in the villiage. More like summer camp
The other is just plain harassment and eurocenterism. The point is to show we care and help; such as, the Red Cross, the Cajun Navy, or Salvation Army. The point is not become abusive an eradicate a person's whole culture. Building a well for clean water is different compared to being hostile when the people themselves have said stop. If they want to evangelize on their own terms let them. It's like saying im going to convert Former Presidrnt Bush into a liberal democrat. Trust me He doesn't want too.
