Nice test. However, I'm really disappointed that you didn't include the San Mai III version in this test! O1 is pretty old school, so a CPM3V vs San Mai III shootout would have been awesome. I'm saying this because I'm predicting that my San Mai III edge will outlast me comfortably! The Cold Steel RUclips Pro-mo video is an amazing demonstration ! They do over a thousand cuts on thick hemp rope, until eventually they run out of rope, and muscled men, in their quest to destroy the edge, and failed! Any chance you could do it? Cheers mate!
I bought the O1 18 years ago for $135, now I want a 3V! Coldsteel does a great job on their 3V heat treatment. I have Coldsteel 3V in the Master Hunter, Master Tanto, and the Magnum Tanto in addition to many of their folders in CPM-S35VN.

Love me some Carbon V Trailmasters, SRKs and Master Hunters. 3 American made Carbon V Trailmasters, including one with factory Stag handle cost as much in 1980 as the Taiwan made CPM3V costs now for one. So happy I got in on the ground floor.

2 types of paper that work well are now rare ; old telephone book pages & newsprint. Cash register receipts are acceptable bit too small for videos with large bowies. Didn't know poly rope was such a duller.
Never knew Cold steel used O1 in their knives. Now I'm curious and want to buy one. Been curious about the performance of that steel since early 2000's when Mad Dog started to use O1 on their knives, (which are priced beyond lunacy, with a typical knife priced at $2000 and some knives priced at $8,000, for oil hardened differentially tempered O1. Couldn't justify the price even if it was made from platinum). But controversy started when some of his blades started to chip, massive chips the size of half of a dime knocked out of blade edges. Some blamed the heat treatment where the edge was hardened to 63-64rc. Which is way to high. Others insisted he change the steel to A2. Personally I was on the fence and never believed that A2 is tougher than O1. Everything about the composition told me O1 should be tougher at very least equal to A2, but not weaker. So I doubt changing steels would have changed anything if he kept the edge at 64rc with A2. I have plenty of experience with A2 but never had anything in O1. And this trail master looks awesome actually prefer the leather wrap handle and brass fittings over all stainless and rubber. If anyone here has experience in A2 and O1 would love to hear your opinion on which you prefer and why and is there a difference in toughness between the two. They are fairly close on charpy impact values right about 50- 55 joules, so I think it ultimately comes down to which ever one has the optimal heat treatment.

The bushcrafters love their O1 because it's an upgrade from 1095, but it still throws sparks off the spine with a rock. Don't know why that's so important anymore. I've never seen one of them say they had to do that to start a fire. I carry a flint and steel if I want to do primitive fire, but to each their own I guess.
O1 is a very old steel that has fair edge retention, but sharpens easily even on basic stones. 3V is tool steel on steroids. I like it, but not as much Cru-Wear or PGK.
