Fascism works just as comfortably with a hard-line Socialist state as it does with a laissez-faire Capitalist one. Otherwise, they are largely quite similar. Fascism creates a cult of the State as the greatest good and the highest authority, with no limits placed on centralized state control of every aspect of life, both public and private, while Communism does the same (though in fairness, this kind of tyrannical totalitarianism is a means to an end in Marxist-Leninist ideology, while it is an end unto itself in Fascism). Then comes Feudalism that lasts all the Middle Ages up to the first bourgeois revolutions like the English, French and American revolutions. Then comes Capitalism, then comes Socialism and finally will come Communism as a stateless classless society with no governmnet or state to speak of. All stages between Slavism and Socialism depend on the existence of the State, rules by one class. This caused the great divide between Anarchists and Marxist who were at first allies and belong to the same Internationals, as Anarchists argue the State should be abolish without the need to pass through Socialism, whilst Marxists said this was impossible. Even late thinkers like Lenin considered that Russia could not go through Socialism because it still was into Feudalism and needed first to experience Capitalism (reason why after the Russian Revolution he invented the term "State Capitalism" to apply for Russia under his command, notice not yet Socialism in itself, this is what some modern Marxist consider countries like China and Venezuela are currently, they don't consider them Socialists as of yet). With this clear as we establish there's then a divide between Anarchism and Marxism as they both want the final end of the State, but whilst Anarchists want its abolition immediatly Marxist want to first apply Socialism for several generations. Anarchists often argue that power corrupts and that having a Dictatorship, even a benevolent Dictatorship made up of workers, would still be an abuse of power and would cause it to corrupt. Obviously that never happens and Socialists leaders would continue to move the goalpost to remain in power. But it should be notice that for Marxists all forms of State are a dictatorship, a dictatorship of a social class. For them Feudalism is the dictatorship of the Nobility and Capitalism the dictatorship of the Bourgesy, so for them Socialism been another dictatorship, that of the Proletariat, is a good thing at best and the lesser evil at worst. Anarchists disagree and they think all dictatorships are bad even Proletarian ones and therefore argue for the dismantelation of the State as they also agree the State itself is consubstantial with dictatorship it can't be no freedom as far as the State exists, all forms of State are dictatorships for them (again both Communists and Anarchists agree on that but Communists think is inevitable to have a State for a while thus arguing to make it a workers dictatorship in the meantime). As we have seen Anarchists predictions became true and basically all "proletarian dictatorships" became totalitarian and corrupt. Whether Anarchism would have worked we can't know as it has never been applied anywhere.

The Terran Empire was an expression of the writers biases against imperialism and individualism. The Confederacy, by contrast, is an expression of the current writers biases against nationalism and populism. Just as the United Federation of Planets is an idealized depiction of a technocratic, multicultural liberal-democracy, its alternate timeline inversions are caricatures of the ideological opponents of technocratic multiculturalism.
A Terran universe centric series would be great. Especially if done in the GOT style. Lots of intrigue, bloodletting, & fornicating. Just go nuts with it.
The mirror universe is always used to highlight the stark contrast between starfleet and what starfleet aspires to be with an authoritarian far-right ideology. Starfleet is supposed to be as far from those things as possible, and star trek in general is all about rejecting xenophobia, isolationism, fascism, and militarism. A show completely set in the mirror universe wouldn’t be showing that contrast, and at that point, why even make it a star trek show? Thats just Warhammer 40k with a star trek coat of paint
One thing: you dont even need to be a Terran to become the Terran Emperor, best (and maybe only) example would be Spock, you just need to be a citizen of the Empire and be able to do such a power grab
The terran empire is a human empire with klingon culture and society. They even have the same promotion system. Its hilariously hypocritical of klingons to condemn them, the terrans committed no crime the klingons did mot do, they are just better at it, because humans are the best species and will inherit the multiverse.
Federation would probably be the sane choice, but the Empire would be somewhat liberating as a Terran but in a dark and twisted kind of way. The confederacy would be oppressive I think. Gonna have to say the Federation as though I'm a Terran Empire fan boy I would definitely die there.
@joshuascrimsher4370 Hmm. They'd wipe each other out. Maybe I'd give the Confederation a slight edge based on this video? Even if they defeated the Terrans, it would still mean the end of Earth and the Confederation. The war would take so much out of them that some of the races thr Confederation oppressed would take advantage of a devastated Confederacy to strike. If the war didn't do this already, they'd probably sterilze Earth (and her colonies) as a first step to ridding the galaxy of these racist Humans once and for all. Heck, if the Terrans knew they were going to lose, I'd totally expect them to come up with something to make any Confederate "victory" phyrric. They'd probably be the ones that destroyed the Confederation's Earth, opening the door for the end of the Confederation.
Great video, but I do take issue with your final statement: "You can see where humans might have gone if not for [Vulcan] interference." Strictly speaking, the events that made humanity evil in both timelines happen before the Vulcans make first contact.
The only reason this wasn’t the mirror universe is so they could use the term “confederacy” and tap into that horn of plenty American racial and historical anxiety.
Yeah I dealt that way too. As far as we can tell it isn’t even a confederacy, it’s more like the republics of today, particularly Russia, with the imperialism of the 1800s.
@Sbebbe Slavery and racism is a horrid institution that has existed since ancient man formed communities. America has existed a mere 240 years old. Remember slavery has been used by European nations for thousands of years before America ever existed and was brought over by the Europeans to America for cheap labor against the will of the poor Africans. Slavery would never have existed in America without the Europeans forcing this on the colonists. All because Europeans wanted free labor for their cash crops tobacco, sugar, and cotton.
Many years ago, before the return of Star Trek in the Next Generation series, there was a Star Trek graphic novel series that explained how the Terran Empire came about, in the Federation Universe the Earth Romulan War was fought only in space but in the Mirror Universe the Romulans actually conquered Earth and occupied it for several decades, after overthrowing the Romulan occupation the people of Earth vowed that never again would they allow themselves to be conquered by aliens and the Empire was born. That was all thrown out when the various Star Trek TV shows showed a completely different beginning to the Empire.
Looking at the NATO and CSTO flag it looks like those 2 military blocks merged together during the 21st century to create The Confederacy of Earth. The Confederacy are alive and kicking due to intense human unity and adaptability, while The terrans are now nothing but a rabble or rebels fighting over scraps. (Thanks DS9 writers) Does The Confederacy of earth timeline still exist or is it parallel like The terrans? it wasn't fully explained!
Considering it seem changes result in a parallel timeline Source Kelvin timeline It's reasoned to believe that the confederation timeline is now also a parallel timeline like the Kelvin timeline
The Confederation of Earth (COT) Timeline was the result of a historical meddling by the dying variant of Q as a final test to Admiral Jean Luc Picard from the prime-timeline. It is unclear whether the dying variant of Q had the power to eliminate this timeline during his last snap with which he transported Picard and his companions back into the prime 2402. It's also unclear if it still exists after Picard and his plucky team of "missfits" 😉 managed to get Rene Picard aboard the manned mission to the Jovian moon Europa which was an important historical event which lead to the foundation of the prime timeline UFP. It's also unclear if the still alive and well variant of Q who visited Jake Crusher-Picard at the end of the last episode of season 3 deleted this timeline his dying variant once created. (1) I for my part would like the idea that this other kind of mirror universe still exists since it still has potential for great trans-reality episodes of future Star Trek series's. (1) Never forget, the Q aren't bound to the linear timeframe of us bipedal puny regulars in the standard-universe in all of its historical timelines. The Q are masters over time, matter, the space and its fabric and reality, they can live for millions of years in the parts of the overal reality in which we live, they also live in all the historical outcomes, timelines, and are also extra-univeral beings and in this extra universal realm they are fully immortal. An individual Q can live trillions of years, in all kinds of manifestations, they can live and experience everything they need to experience. A Q can concetrate fully on one variant of himself who in the case of our beloved John de Lancie Q to experience dying and losing his powers, so he can be surprised, lacking of future knowledge if he depowered too much and after the death, Q micht have been revived by his omni-reality- and transtemporal nature. I'm sure, the Q have a single word or a short sentence for what I wrote because we humans need more of these to describe the nature of these hard to comprehend beings.
I want to see a story about the confederacy and the Empire encountering each other, since thr Confederacy is a change timeline of the prime universe there should have been encounters, such a version of the ToS episode alone would have been interesting. Also since its an alternate timeline, if Voyager still got flung to the Delta Quadrant and still went thru year of hell it might have Temporal Shields and there might be a Confederation Star Ship Voyager on the way "home" of course with a slightly different crew, no 7 of 9 for example
Whew! A Confederation Janeway pirating her way across the Delta Quadrant? (more than she did) They beat the Borg; I wonder if the Confederation could take on Species 8472? Would Confederation's Janeway have led them right to Earth's doorstep? 🤔
@@Archangelarts I meant there might be a confederate Janeway in the prime timeline if they had a year of hell in that timeline due to temporal shielding they would could have been protected from the timeline getting fixed meaning there could be a confederation voyager still stranded in the delta quadrant on its way home and causing all kinds of trouble when they get close enough to home to find out history completely changed. It's still a Janeway who disregards any laws about timetravel, if they ever do a timetravel star trek that's a good faction for the temporal cold war, also regular voyagers crew
@JoducusKwak Ooooh! 🤩 I wonder what gaming system would be best for running a campaign in this timeline. The rampage of a dark Janeway, running her own temporal war and ravaging the Mirror Universe as well as the Prime Universe, sounds like an interesting setup. Subplot: "Which one of us is the Section 31 plant, and whose side are they really on?" 🤔
Stories of the Confederacy would be an interesting (yet violent and bloody) set of novels. I mean look at all the races they eliminated, and they were eliminating the borg queen. This implies they had travelled into Borg space all that distance away, a major feat. And it would be a relatively peaceful universe for the moment having eliminated all the other nearby powers. Would there be a Dominion war with the founders for example? How did they wipe out the Borg (or was this merely the ones in the Alpha Quadrant). So many interesting stories to write. Heck maybe Species 8472 wiped out the Borg in their quadrant and was expanding with no humans to help them force them back. Ahhh the possibilities.
I think the snappiest way to describe the confederacy in the Picard season two timeline, is to answer the question: what if earth made first contact with Cardassia? Essentially, under Soong, Earth avoided a Third World War which we know the universe of the Terran Empire did not but embraced a technocratic government. In some way, it’s almost as if you see how the nation state of Oceania formed in the novel 1984 and remove the principles of Ingsoc. The borg queen is the focus of the two minute hate. The confederation always has to be at war. The confederation is always watching you.
The Confederation is much more organized and much more dangerous. It be like the mirror universe terrains coming together instead of fighting each other
I would say that the Terran Confederacy is more like Ancient Rome than the Soviet Union. The Roman Republic and even the Roman Empire had a republican face, but the former was really an oligarchy while the latter became like an absolute monarchy. They too had public executions to amuse the masses as well as the gladiatorial games, while the Soviet Union was more secret with its executions. Look at the complete destruction of Carthage and Corinth or even Dacia for how they dealt with non-Romans they considered a threat.
That might make a good topic 🤔 Short answer the only time it’s mentioned how they refer to it other than just the Federation, is Georgiou says “to us you are mirror” or words to that effect. And they view the Federation with suspicion and they think it’s a threat to the empire due to subversive ideas, tends to be the main reaction
I wonder, would the terran empire still exist if the confederation has replaced the united federation of planets? Since the mirror universe is parralel to the prime.
Hrm... Since the core reframing of the Mirror Universe is opposite in its Political Ideals yet casted more Cynically in the application, I think applying that same modulation to a Mirror of the Confederation would produce a version of Human History was was both Xenophilic and Psychopathicly Self-Obsessed. Anti-order, Anti-National, yet no closer to a utopia than the Confederation itself is. I could imagine a Mirror Confederation where Earth itself has long been destroyed; Where Humans have violently conquered every known planet, enslaved their populations, tearing down the identities of their peoples, abusing them for hedonism and greed, forcing them to fight nation-to-nation in an endless meat-grinder of visceral sadism, while the Humans have exploited every remarkable power, plot device, alien artifact and higher life form they've come across in their eternal exploration, their constant hunger for more *toys*. A universe where Klingons don't engage in strategy, but simply sniff out primitive worlds for the glory of butchery, and serve the hearts of their victims to their Feudal Human Rulers. Where Vulcans have been forced into losing their discipline and turned into carnal berserkers that writhe at the heels of their sinister masters. A universe where Q's have been manipulated into the same fascination with Humanity they had in TNG/VOY, only to have it turned on them and be hunted to extinction. A world that has achieved the type of functional stability that the Confederation desperately struggles to find, one not bounded by the entropy of their cold, clinical dictatorship... and defiles every sense of propriety and value the Confederation believes to be good. A universe where Humanity itself, in its vile quest for indulgence, is going extinct because it's been so successful in its dark desires that mundane questions like procreation or interacting with one's own species simply don't matter to anyone, anymore. A universe doomed to be the eternal battleground of a handful of decaying immortal post-human monsters, with no future and no destiny. A jaded, bleak, cold universe of grim voids, blood-coated worlds, and empty hearts. Hell in Space. That's just how I imagine it, though.
There''s a HUGE difference. The Mirror Universe is an alternate universe with slightly different physics. The speed of light is different there and the "humans" aren't exactly human. The Confederacy of Earth is a timeline change in the prime universe. A parallel. Regular humans.
@@marcusaustralius2416 They are more like chimpanzees than humans in their behavior. It's like the mirror universe bunch never grew out of that primitive mindset when it comes to power and dominance. Only the bullies, criminals and war criminals do .
It’s clear you have a superficial understanding of how comment on a video about Star Trek not the Roman Empire, funny how you can just type anything here with absolutely no idea what you’re saying or who you’re talking about isn’t it?
A simple explanation: Terran Empire: Nazis won WW2. Confederacy of Earth: Confederation won the US civil war. That's all. And no, aliens can't rise to the Terran Emperor position. That's just a non 100%-canon jump of Star Trek Online, where the timeline already has a different Terran Empire, as the Terran Empire collapsed after mirror Spock started rebellion. And mirror T'Pol clearly pointed out, that no other race can outrank Humans in the Terran Empire. And Discovery also not canon.
@@PaulGuy If it's in a paralel universe, like JJ-verse, it is, if not, then it's not canon, as it goes against everything that happened in TOS ENT which ARE canon.
And that is precisely where the mistake lies. In the excerpts about the contemporary history of the mirror universe, it is said that the Nazis never won the Second World War.
Well, no. The Terran Confederacy alternate timeline is just a variation of the main timeline where Adam Soong shaped humanity’s development after the mid 21st century instead of Zefram Cochrane; the Terran Empire mirror universe is a separate timeline where people (not just humans, all sentient life) was naturally more prone to being malicious & malign.
In DS9 in one of the first two mirror episodes it is stated, that the Terran Empire was weakened after Spocks REFORMS (which means he must have risen to power within the Empire), which allowed the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance to take over.
No, the Confederacy was an alternate time-line not an alternate reality. The Confederacy was born and Starfleet perished because Soong was manipulated by Q to kill Picard's ancestor who was poised to do something that would drive humanity forward in exploration and not conquest. The alternate time-line story was setup at the beginning when they needed the borg queen to identify/locate the Flashpoint (year) in which history was changed, and make the calculations for time-space warp jump around the sun. Nothing in this would suggest parallel universes. But whatever, it's just a show.
The Confederation is another mirror universe the orginal mirror universe terran empire fell by DS9 as we all saw this is just another one where the federation is evil and xenophobic they kicked the borgs ass and probadly killed the dominion a series in this universe would be great

Vs the government controls the means of production. Private property still exists you just build what the county needs. And in communism, people in government controls the people and the means of production. In practice. They are essentially the same except socialism is worse. In every way . Including war crimes and body counts.
CORRECTION FASCIM IT'S EXTREME RIGHT WHEN THE OLLIGARCHS HAVE THE PRODUCTIVE ASSETS AND ECONOMY CONTROLL AND THE RIGHT SYSTEMS CAN HAVE THE CONTROLL OF THE ECONOMY ....
Fascism is literally defined by being extreme right-wing. "National Socialism" was nothing more than marketing in an era when socialism/communism was a growing political ideology, a lie to trick the populace. The difference is rather simple: fascism is extreme government control with private oligarchs running the economy, while socialism/communism is extreme government control with the state owning the "businesses".
Conservatives map much closer to fascists than socialists. Both Con and Fas believe in a stratified society wherein the "best people" lead the "less desirable." The rich and powerful deserve their success, and losers are losers by their own shortcomings. Both look back to the past as a roadmap for the future: a nostalgic past (usually 30-50 years ago) and a mythic past (couple hundred to a thousand years ago), respectively. A socialist country would be more democratic and equitable: a needs-based economy instead of profit-based. Cons and Fas are also both REALLY into the military spending and making wars.
Our OP doesn't realize that a bottom-up planning approach starting locally by passionate experts will always be better than an economy planned by the oligarchs. That's more democratic and will result in long-term benefit decisions. I'd prefer that to the moneyed decisions of my government.

We only see 3 ships in the confederacy season. And we've gotten traits and shops from them.

Imagine a universe where the humans and klingons rule the galaxy and consider each other equal that would be insane.
I wonder who will win between these two faction's.
so which would you all prefer to be in?
Federation of Planets
Terran Empire
Confederacy of Earth
Federation would probably be the sane choice, but the Empire would be somewhat liberating as a Terran but in a dark and twisted kind of way. The confederacy would be oppressive I think. Gonna have to say the Federation as though I'm a Terran Empire fan boy I would definitely die there.
Soooo a kick ass story would be Picard trying to escape an interdimensional war between the terrans and the confederacy
This a well-articulated and easy to understand comparison. Thanks for the video 😊
Which is the stupitest use of confederation in any culture
I didn’t know that there was a second mirror universe timeline
Looking at the NATO and CSTO flag it looks like those 2 military blocks merged together during the 21st century to create The Confederacy of Earth.
The Confederacy are alive and kicking due to intense human unity and adaptability, while The terrans are now nothing but a rabble or rebels fighting over scraps. (Thanks DS9 writers)
Does The Confederacy of earth timeline still exist or is it parallel like The terrans? it wasn't fully explained!
Considering it seem changes result in a parallel timeline
Source
Kelvin timeline
It's reasoned to believe that the confederation timeline is now also a parallel timeline like the Kelvin timeline
I for my part would like the idea that this other kind of mirror universe still exists since it still has potential for great trans-reality episodes of future Star Trek series's.
No, it was just their timeline altered. Of course with the laziness of parallel universes it could exist somewhere
Whats the background music in this?
I want to see a story about the confederacy and the Empire encountering each other, since thr Confederacy is a change timeline of the prime universe there should have been encounters, such a version of the ToS episode alone would have been interesting.
Also since its an alternate timeline, if Voyager still got flung to the Delta Quadrant and still went thru year of hell it might have Temporal Shields and there might be a Confederation Star Ship Voyager on the way "home" of course with a slightly different crew, no 7 of 9 for example
Whew! A Confederation Janeway pirating her way across the Delta Quadrant? (more than she did)
They beat the Borg; I wonder if the Confederation could take on Species 8472?
The Terran empire, runs on the assumtion of might is right and meritocricy only thing that is barred is being emperor
What does the Mirror call the Main universe?
What are their reactions to the Federation?
That might make a good topic 🤔
Short answer the only time it’s mentioned how they refer to it other than just the Federation, is Georgiou says “to us you are mirror” or words to that effect.

A simple explanation:
Terran Empire: Nazis won WW2.
Discovery is inarguably canon, whether you like it or not.
Confederacy of Earth you wouldn't have the terran empire in the mirror unvierse you would have starfleet.
False
No, the Confederacy was an alternate time-line not an alternate reality. The Confederacy was born and Starfleet perished because Soong was manipulated by Q to kill Picard's ancestor who was poised to do something that would drive humanity forward in exploration and not conquest. The alternate time-line story was setup at the beginning when they needed the borg queen to identify/locate the Flashpoint (year) in which history was changed, and make the calculations for time-space warp jump around the sun. Nothing in this would suggest parallel universes. But whatever, it's just a show.

Facism is left not right wing. Monarchy might be extreme right, also theocracy.
Fascism is far right ideology communism is far left ideology. Monarchy can vary it depends on how autocratic it is, a theocracy could easily be fascistic but isn’t necessarily. Or military dictator or king ( absolute monarchy) or theocracy . Fascism was always left. Thats a common mistake. Most people have been told that they are right but thats historical revision. Iran would be right wing. Its not a small point. A centrally planed economy. The only difference is in Russia is the people control the meansvof productions. Vs the government controls the means of production. Private property still exists you just build what the county needs. And in communism, people in government controls the people and the means of production. In practice. They are essentially the same except socialism is worse. In every way . Including war crimes and body counts.
fascism is the right's response to the left
CORRECTION FASCIM IT'S EXTREME RIGHT WHEN THE OLLIGARCHS HAVE THE PRODUCTIVE ASSETS AND ECONOMY CONTROLL
AND THE RIGHT SYSTEMS CAN HAVE THE CONTROLL OF THE ECONOMY ....
The Star Trek Federation I always found it too idealistic I hope that it never becomes reality completely.
We're a lot more likely to go the Confederation route.
