    The line "It's hip hop chowder red over white" it's a reference to the red army, revolutionaries, beating the white army, the monarch's one, and consequently to the helplessness of Rasputin who
    no longer had the support of the imperial family("the Tzar's wife can't do shit tonight").
    If someone else already explained the line, my apologies I didn't notice.

      I think lots of history teachers aren‘t really used to analyzing bars, and so they just don‘t listen closely enough and miss a lot of wordplay and references, even though they might know the historical background. At least that‘s the impression I get from their reaction videos.

    • @Watarri
      @Watarri 3 года назад +3

      actually, if a person explains any historical event by saying that someone has gone mad with power, it means that he does not even understand the basics in history.
      I don't mean to offend, and this is definitely not Knox's fault. But most of what is said in the two videos about Russia is the level of cheap propaganda from high school ... or Wikipedia, which is essentially the same thing.

    • @UniquelyAwful
      @UniquelyAwful 3 года назад +14

      @SlavicRusa 3 года назад +4

      @@UniquelyAwful as much as I disagree with Watarr, i must say that there are some inaccuracies, like, for example, Gorbaczow was not the reason why the Berlin Wall fell. Countries of the Warsaw Pact had been gaining control and independence since June 1989. Sure, his politic allowed opposition to flourish even more but it was the opposition and its independence movements (like Solidarity led by Lech Wałęsa) who tore it down. He may be a symbol, but history’s a bit more complicated.
      Pierogi is not a Russian dish. Not the pierogi western people are thinking about- these are Polish.
      Bortsch is not only Russian. Its associated national cuisine is Ukrainian (its alternative name is Ukrainian Bortsch after all), Belarusian, Moldovan, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian.
      But ‘Wikipedia propaganda’ got me crying from laughter. Yes, sure, whatever it means 😂 there always will be different versions of past events. As long as there are people with different political views etc. We could all go through a very important event but each of us would remember it differently. That’s why it’s important to read into various sources and then put together your own opinion.
      There’s only one truth- yes, but the way it’s pictured always differ. Unless its actual propaganda, then there’s no room for differences and story is always identical.

    Fun fact about Rasputin healing the prince's hemophilia: emotional distress worsens the symptoms, and Rasputin was allegedly pretty funny and entertaining with children. He probably alleviated the poor kid's stress from court life

    • @oake5869
      @oake5869 3 года назад +277

      I think it had to do with him also telling the doctors to stop giving the child painkillers, which thin out the blood in the body. I believe it wasn't known that the child actually had hemophilia and they just fed him painkillers cause he was in pain. Then Rasputin said "nah, imma use god-like powers instead", and ironically it saved the kid's life.
      MIGHT BE WRONG THO

      @DenizenOfTheAbyss 3 года назад +58

      @@oake5869 came here to say this, too. Last Podcast on the Left pulled this out as a possibility because I think it was a time where they used something with acetylsalicylic acid (active ingredient for aspirin) so it was a go-to for the prince’s symptoms. So the condition would supposedly worsen when Rasputin would leave and the doctors were left to treat the prince again. That is if you believe that research, but it’s an interesting and possible part of why the hemophilia would improve when Radputin was in charge!

    16:21 Funnily enough, a lot of the details regarding Rasputin's death are generally considered false: the man who was responsible for the murder plot was notorious for "retelling" the story with new details every time he needed money for his extravagant lifestyle, if memory serves. From memory, here's the claimed sequence of events:
    1. Rasputin was invited to a party by a group of Russian nobles who were fed up with his influence in the Tsar's court.
    2. The conspirators offered Rasputin cyanide-laced pastries and booze (I think alcohol) which, allegedly, the man devoured without any sign of illness. This one I think is hotly contested because Rasputin had a medical condition that would have made him decline the poisoned food, but I'm not 100% on this.
    3. After the poisoning didn't work (either through it not affecting him or him declining the food) the conspirators shot him repeatedly to kill him before leaving.
    4. One of the conspirators forgot their coat, they they all went back. Yes, I know this sounds like a cliché horror movie plot point. When they returned, Rasputin, allegedly, jumped up and attacked them, so one of the nobles ran him through with a sword.
    5. After this, so the story goes, the conspirators rolled Rasputin up in a rug or something before throwing him in a nearby river. According to the stories, his body was found a few days later and they discovered marks on the inside of what he was wrapped in that made it appear that Rasputin had tried to claw his way out to freedom before finally dying.
    If you go with the full, hardcore story, Rasputin was poisoned, shot repeatedly, and stabbed before being thrown in a river, where drowning or hypothermia finally killed him.

    Love your work bro! Just a few additions:
    6:35, Stalin translates to 'man of steel'. Stalin gave himself that name, Rasputin is flipping that beautifully.
    9:35, Stalin also often used his own eyes as a misdirection. He actually had a very warm gaze, often putting people at ease when he needed. So 'look into my eyes' can be viewed as 'imma manipulate you to shreds and then send you to a nice place in Siberia'. Solid writing.
    21:00, also pls note the 'in' and 'out'. Come in, get out. These guys man...
    22.10, Baryshnikov was a Russian dancer, who was allowed to dance outside of Russia. That wasn't a thing before, because the Sovjets feared artists leaving the USSR. Gorbi didnt, so Baryshnikov fled to canada xD
    Apart from that, beautiful breakdown as always, really love it when you do these!!

    Stalin actually cared very deeply for his wife. And, according to people who knew him, lost all of his humanity when she died.
    Also, when his son was captured by the Germans, they offered him in exchange for some of their own officers. Stalin responded with something along the lines of "Why would I trade a lieutenant for a general?"

      There's also the factor that if he _did_ show too much love for his son, they'd break the deal and upsell even harder.
      He was ruthless and an asshole, but there was some hint of pragmatism there.
      Same with Stalin's divide-and-conquer of the Soviet leadership, feeding Beria kids in exchange for keeping everybody else scared.
      Not the _best_ strategy, but not completely pointless either.

    as a Georgian i know lot of thing about Stalin
    Stalin also means man of steel in Russian as we know he is from Georgia and his real name is joseph Jugashvili (i know its hard to read) :)
    Stalin was so ruthless and straight he didn't even care about his son. Nazis sent message to Stalin that they will exchange his son for German (soviet captured) general and he said:
    "i do not exchange generals for a normal soldier"
    when Lenin was in his death bed Stalin told him to give the power to him and Lenin said that people will not follow him and do you know how Stalin answered? here:
    "if they don't follow me they will follow you"
    this means that they will die like Lenin
    Overall maybe he was ruth and heartless dictator but that's what saved us from speaking German and watching funny mustache man do sh!t
