  • Filmed Sunday 23 March 2014 on an outing, comprising of 5 RUclipsr plus Margaret Chapman, to the Salisbury area - videos of Dinton and Compton Champerlayne still to come!!
Netherhampton: The reasonably large church, complete with the tall tower, belies the tiny village in which it is located. The tower contains a small 3, rung from the ground floor. They go reasonably, albeit a tad flighty, and are tuned as the front 3 of a 4.

Baverstock: The tower contains a ring of 3, two of them medieval castings. They sound surprisingly good for their age, especially the tenor! However, in terms of ringability, these are not in a good state. This was surprising as, on ascending to the belfry, we found relatively modern-looking frame and fittings in good nick, although with a lack of stays and sliders! With the tail ends cut off below the sally, we decided to raise them carefully one by one from the small intermediate chamber, ringing like we did at Orcheston (see video elsewhere on RUclips.) However, there are reasons for being chiming only - tenor loose on gudgeons, treble loose on headstock, not to mention other alarming banging noises from upstairs. And then the ceiling plaster started cracking (as can be seen at 2:05.) We got downstairs pretty sharpish, had a chime and left. Not one for the faint of heart!!

Sutton Mandeville: Another very pleasant sounding ring, tuned 1-3 of 4 again, in a frame that takes up the whole tower. However, the ropes have been removed and the bells are sounded by Ellacombe hammers, one of which nearly took Jack's foot off!! All other fittings upstairs remain as if the ropes were on, including pulleys, stays and sliders, all looking in rather good nick except a little bit of frame by the tenor that looked a bit dodgy!

St Martin, Salisbury: En route home, Alex and I went via here for evening service ringing, and made the 8 up. A pleasant albeit oddstruck 13cwt 8, cast by a mixture of founders, they were overhauled by Whitechapel in 1986, and the 5 was replaced by the same firm in 1990 when the old one cracked. Small snippet from a few call changes before my camera died!

Have you heard of Borley in Essex? The church has 3 bells chimes only. Iv got very special permission to chime them. Its a very rare grab because the bells aren't chimed at all often and the church is always locked except for services.
