    I have a D3400 and have managed to tether it to laptop, windows notebook and desktop. With a cheap remote trigger this gives me all the advantages of both wifi and a swivelling screen. The windows software was free and I had the other kit anyway. Thanks Tony for giving me the idea of tethering in one of your other videos.

    I know this video is a few years old, but just looked at it as I was researching current kit lenses for D5600/D5500 for my brother. I thought I'd add my perspective on the 18-140mm lens. In 2014 I owned a D3100 with the kit 18-55. In August of that year I was planning a couple week trip to North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Having been there previously in 2010 with a small Nikon point & shoot & an Olympus Ultra Zoom, I knew I wanted something a bit longer than 55mm. So I picked up a used 55-105 locally. That and my D3100 did a wonderful job for me on that trip. Between then and December 2016 I acquired a D5500. I planned another trip for December '16 and once again I really only wanted to carry my D5500 with one lens attached. I travel far and wide on the Island and like to travel light, and photography is important but not my main gig while there. The 18-140 did exactly what I wanted. Actually if anything, I wished I had a wider lens, not longer, for some landscape pics, BUT since I am using crop sensor cameras I have learned to do some quite good panoramas to stich when I get back home. Bottom line, if you're planning travel and want to go light, but have a decent lens on your camera for most everyday purposes, the 18-140 wins hands down. Of course if you are looking to take serious photographs you'd be packing more gear anyways.

    I bought a D3300 not too long ago and I love it! I would call myself an amateur photographer at best and I want to get better. I also bought a 35mm which I also like. My question is when is it that I should upgrade? The photography I'm trying to do is night photography and a lot of wide angle exposures around the city at night. I was thinking about getting the Rokinon 14mm soon. However, as for a new camera, I was thinking about buying a D7100? Recommendations or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Watched you along with many others from over a year ago before buying camera. Appreciate your info. I have repeatedly heard and read in books (David Busch & others) that the 18-140mm exceeds the 18-55 in many ways. So I got that as kit lens, along with the 70-300mm, 35mm 1.8 (wish I could have bought 1.4), 40 macro, 85 macro in Nikkor and a 100mm manual focus Tokina based on reviews on it as well. Many optional things to buy like extension tubes (good quality even on those). Need to work on lens reversing ring and adapter for that option for serious macro. Photography is something you grow into! Growing now translates to two pretty good size camera bags!!

  • @siamesepleaseme7468
    @siamesepleaseme7468 9 лет назад

    By the way, for anyone who may read this. Always go for the better option, the $200 won't be missed in the long run. I would & do recommend the D5300 with the 18-140mm kit lens which I bought over a year ago from a locally owned store (small chain), Crutchfield that has lifetime support for any items bought through them. Camera experts that know more than the employees at big box stores like Best Buy etc. I believe in buying a camera and never getting rid of it even though may buy newer ones at some point. Still have film cameras, multiple digital and no reason to sell as they don't bring what they are still worth to me. My reasoning on these things may show my age (almost 60). If go someplace that runs good chance vehicle could be broken into, don't want to leave my best stuff in there. Couple of cameras back takes excellent photos and while I would be upset at losing, it is not $4000 down the drain.

    I am a D3300 owner and a beginner hobbyist photographer. I own the Nikon 18-140mm, 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/1.8. As far as I can see these three lenses are the best quality budget minded lenses. I started to look into zoom lenses and the prices are astronomical. I’d appreciate your recommendation on a quality zoom lens or any other quality lens that will help keep my lens selection well rounded.

    On the Rokinon you would need to explain how to use it on the d3300 as I believe it is all manual shooting mode. Most people buying an entry level camera like the d3300 or d5300 will probably not know how to use a totally manual setting lens, imho. :)

      Kimberly Norton You'd be surprised; there are many very technical photographers who don't have the budget for higher-end cameras. People who do prefer manual don't need the more advanced focusing systems. Anyway, there's a market segment out there....

    Very nice video, very informative. I'm an amateur and I don't plan to become a pro. I'd like to upgrade from my D3100 to the 3300 or 5300 and this video clarifies a lot!
    I love my 3100 and just today I went to the store to hand both cameras, but I really see that the extra stuff on the 5300 is not that important for me to spend the extra money, so I think I'll go with the 3300 and I'll enjoy it for many years and I'll maybe will get another lens to extend the type of shoots in certain situations!

    I am looking into purchasing a d5300. It will be my first dslr but it's a camera that I want to grow into and be able to use for a while since I am a college student going for a doctorate degree and I probably won't have the money for this kind of thing for a very long time. But then I heard that the d3300 has a highly detailed guide mode that would help me learn how to change the different settings on the camera like the aperture and how they would effect the picture I was taking. I was wondering if the d5300 has the same tutorialistc guide mode. As someone who is just getting into photography that kind of integrated help would be fantastic because I have a tendency to forget things quickly that aren't directly related to my college studies.

    These days people also have tablets.
    Tablets mostly have very high res IPS screens which are great for reviewing photo's on the go.
    Nathan elson from Calgary actually used it profesionaly in his fujifilm x photographer video of the 56mm f1.2 lens.
    WiFi isn't just an gadget it can be really handy in some cases besides social media.

      Sure, we'll tether when we have a separate art director in the studio... but that use isn't typical for a D3300/D5300 buyer, and the Nikon app isn't especially well setup for tethering.

    • @BarnET0
      @BarnET0 10 лет назад

      Tony Northrup
      No, that is indeed stupid.
      I meant you can use the tablet as a screen to show your model/girlfriend how it looks and how you want the next pose.
      Tablets are great for that. They have long battery life compared to laptops and are easy to carry.
      I do agree that the Nikon WiFi is a bit clunky. The Panasonic gx7 is much easier to connect.

    Really informative video. I was wondering if I should get D3300 and use the extra money for a better lens. I am more interested into macro photography and the articulating screen is a great help. ( I currently shoot with Panasonic FZ200 which has articulating screen).
    You also answered one question you asked in the video - why would someone want to adjust camera settings through an app? Well so I don't shake my camera while rotating the knobs and dials. I take macro photos and even though the camera is mounted on the tripod an mm of movement while trying to change the aperture or focus, moves the target I am shooting away form where I want it. I have a remote shutter release but I wish if I could control more things without touching the camera.
    Thanks for the video. I am going ahead with D5300. :)

    Just in case anyone is thinking about picking up a secondhand D3300, the AF mechanism it uses in "Live Mode" (looking at the image on the screen rather than thru the lens) is not very good. It is bad enough that I never use Live Mode. The standard AF thru the lens works fine for this particular and eternal amateur. I wish I had known this before I purchased it 4 or 5 years ago though. I would have passed on the D3300. I do not know if the D5300 suffers the same deficiency. I hope someone who knows the D5300 will report on that.

    Tony & Chelsea Northrup first of all thanks for uploading these good informative videos i want to buy nikon d 5300 but i am confused weather i should go for body only + 35 mm prime lens or d 5300 + kit 18-140 please suggest me which one is better which prime is better 50 or 35 mm.

    • @mcr0741
      @mcr0741 6 лет назад

      If you get the 35mm prime, it almost eliminates your need of using a kit lens. Personally, the 18-140 is not that convenient either, since you think of it as the one lens that will give you versatility, but its kind of bulky to use in the first place. I'd rather suggest the 18-55 and that is only if you're riveted on to buying a kit lens too.
      Here are some combos that you should look into:
      1) Body + 35mm
      2) Body + 18-55 + 50mm
      3) Body + 35mm + 50-250mm.

I am planning to get a telephoto lense to increase the range, but i dont want to carry more than one lense. So, I am thinking of buying Nikon 18-140 mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR to replace my kit lense. Any advice on the choice of budget lense that i can look into?
    Thanks and regards.

    Hi Tony, I really like your channel. I got a d5300 with kit lenses DX 18-55, and everybody says that kit lenses arent so good, but the lenses I see to sell are pretty much those DX AF-S. which lenses would u reccomend me for the d5300 to improve my photos? I would like to use it mainly for portraits, or landscapes.

    i'm looking to buy my first dslr camera and i've been looking at these 2 models. I'll be using it for work such as events/ cocktail functions and some advertising such as large banners, websites, etc. Is it worth to go the D5300?

    Great review! I came here researching the 3300 and have been swayed to the 5300. I am looking at a package with 18-55 mm and 55-300 MM Nikkor lenses. My primary interest is capturing kids in motion, and in the case of basketball, with very poor lighting. We travel a lot and the lighting in these multi-sport buildings just confound me with my current Canon mirrorless. Would you say the 5300 would be good for low-light action? I need to freeze motion without any sort of flash if possible. Thanks!

    So I'm planning on buying my first dslr and I'm leaning towards the d3300. I will mostly be taking photos outdoors and of course sporting events, whether it's games (I am an nfl season ticket holder) in the stands, or training camp, etc. Do you think the d3300 will be capable for that Or should I spend the extra 250$ and get the d5300?

    Seems at end of the day I am thinking of the D5300, GPS is great for my needs. Anyways, is the 18-55 kit lens worth extra 100 dollars? Or should I save the $100 and invest into the Nikon 50mm and Rokinon 85mm, They seems like a really nice buy :)

      It's hard to say... i like having a kit lens around for casual shooting, but certainly I wouldn't use it for any serious photography.

      Tony Northrup One more question. Seems a week or two from now I will like to get the D5300 and it is a DX body, if I buy a FX lens (full frame) will the quality be the same or the pictures will look odd? I read that if I get a DX lens on a FX body I would have to use a crop mode on the FX camera. I would like to invest into some DX lenses for the future if whenever I upgrade to full frame body. Thanks Tony you are the best!

      @TonyAndChelsea  10 лет назад

      Sameer Manek If your first priority is video, get a GH4 instead: Panasonic GH4 4k Review vs 5D Mark III, 70D, GH2: Rolling Shutter, Moire, Focusing. Of the two cameras you mentioned, I'd prefer a D5300 because of the articulating screen.

      Thank you so much for reply Tony
      Panasonic GH4 4k is great even 5D too. but i forget to tell that my budget 800$ to 900$.
      and one more thing i read somewhere on net that D5300 has some focus problem. is that true?
      first i planed to buy D5200 then i get know about D5300 so i stretch my budget and now i decided to get D5300.
      but i afraid if i choose wrong choice that will waste of money so thats why i taking some expert opinion to choose
      is D5200 is better.
      Thanks again

    Hi, quick question here. Can you not just take a photo where the focus it not in the middle by locking the focus with the shutter button wherever you want it to be, and then move the camera to composition? It should lock the focus, right? I mean it locks the exposure meter too, but really, if the exposure if fine otherwise than it should be achievable?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  10 лет назад

      Soniboy84 Yes, focus-recompose works fine. However, if there's a scenario where you simply want to keep the same focus as a previous shot (such as night photography) you'll have to switch the lens to manual mode... which takes time and tends to mess up your shot. You also have to switch the focus mode from single shot to continuous when there's action. Check this video: ruclips.net/video/8PN9R0D3pF0/видео.html

    Hi,
    I am considering between a D3400 and D5300.
    I will only use it to shoot indoor (99%) for properties which are usually in low light condition. I will also purchase a ultra wide angle for this camera.
    I read somewhere I believe on Quora where somebody said it is better to get a D5300 as it has more AF.
    However the ISO on the D5300 is lower than on D3400.
    Which is more important for my use? Higher ISO or AF?
    Thanks

    I am planning to buy the D5300, but I am facing a dilemma when it comes to lenses. After some research I've ended up with some combinations of lenses and 2 multi-purpose lenses. I would really appreciate your opinion. So:
    1)Nikon 18-55mm VR II (kit lens) + 55-300mm VR
    2)Nikon 35mm f/1,8G + 55-300mm VR
    3)Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM
    4)18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC (OS)* MACRO HSM
    What do you think about thes3? I am a beginner and I would really appreciate your help!!

    Hi, I am definitely buying a D5300, but I am still confused among the lens option...18-140 or 18-55, 55-200. Can you explain why 18-140 is not as versatile as the combination...Where does it lag? How much is the photo quality different? Is it always much better to buy the combination if you are not concerned about switching the lens?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  10 лет назад +2

      Anshit Prasad The superzooms like the 18-140 just aren't generally as sharp, but then again, the 18-55 and 55-200 aren't especially sharp. I don't mean to be down on superzooms; they're fantastic to use, especially while travelling, and most people don't need much sharpness. in the back of my mind, I'm always concerned with getting commercially sellable pictures, which requires as much sharpness as possible, but it's not an issue for most.

    Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is not for DX format cameras. Which means on a D5300 it would give a 75mm like output. This might be great option for portraits but other reasons for having a 50mm is not satisfied. What do you think? Is there any "actual" 50mm lens option for D5300?

    • @UltraSonic73
      @UltraSonic73 8 лет назад

      Any 35mm prime (Or 33,333..., but that doesn't exist) on an APS-C sensor will give you the same FoV as a 50mm on Full Frame sensor. And every 50mm lens will give you the same FoV as a 75mm on a FF sensor. There is no such thing as a lens that has the same FoV on a APS-C as on a FF, that's just how physics work :)

      Deb Schulz Hi, this can help: ruclips.net/video/subDtZIRmnE/видео.html
      I push most wildlife photographers towards Canon; a used 7D is ideal and in your budget. Of those two cameras, the improved focusing of the D5300 would definitely help over the D3300.

    Hello, does the Nikon D5300 really lag after a shot was taken in live-view mode? I wasn't able to hear the mirror flap in your shots here in this video. (Or were they cut-out in editing?)
    I mean, as I take a shot in live view mode, I can hear the shutter mechanism inside to work, it takes a while (about a half to a whole second) to preview the image and to be ready for the next shot. Is that the norm with this? Thanks!

    Hello, Tony. I decided to go for the D3300 for my first DSLR, there is a bundle that comes with the 18-55mm kit lens and an extra 55-200mm kit lens for $100 more than just the camera with just the 18-55mm kit lens. Would you personally pay the extra $100 for the 55-200mm Nikon kit lens or invest that money on a better lens?

      I got that same bundle. The 55-200mm also comes with an sd card, a camera bag, and the wifi adaptor. So a $350-400 lens, a $30 sd card, a $70 dollar camera bag and however expensive the wifi adapter. All for a $100 dollars more. Getting new lens are always encouraged, but if you're just starting thats a fucking steal.
