I've been playing 699s (6-PW) for 2 years now and absolutely love them. I added the 699 2 driving iron this past summer which has been my new fairway finder, albeit only ~190yds lol.
I have a similar set of 699's 6-AW. I like them but at 74, I am going to look for something more helpful for my old age golf! I want to try the Mizuno 923 HL after Christmas bills are paid.
I need these clubs in my life. Ive currently got the sub 70 639 cb clubs and they are amazing. I could not be happier, not to mention how beautiful they look. But...Ive been trying to find an excuse to buy those 659 mbs. I have dreams about seeing those clubs in my bag xD
I got the 699 pro driving iron used liked it so much that I got a set of the matching irons and they are great. Also sub 70 has the best customer service ever.
I game the Sub 70 699Pros and love them. Have a 699U as well. The 949 hybrids are great as is the 849Pro Driver. Lots of shaft options as well. Fantastic company!
Played with a scratch golfer who used the muscle back sub 70s. We were at Barnsley Gardens resort here in GA. He said he loved them and wanted the Takomos at first but was glad he ended up with them.
Thanks this helps me feel better about my 699 clubs coming. Only thing I wish I talked with sub70 more about was the shaft. I picked the stiff project x 6.0 graphite with out much research besides how far I hit my 7 iron. Either way has to be better then my goodwill set of irons for $15. 😂
Those are some nice clubs ! I tried the demo on the 659 cb and loved it but it had a stiff dg shaft in it and the ball flight was a tad lower than I wanted. Wished I could have tested it with a proper fit shaft. I believe you should take the mb to the course and play a few holes . Just might be the club for you .
I am a newer golfer and found a black set of the 659CB's for an insane price used and got them so this should be interesting😅 I have been using game improvement cobra irons that are super chunky looking and very forgiving so I am excited to try out some less forgiving "good" clubs
Mark Crossfield did a great video a few years ago comparing a 1980s blade against the Mavrik gave improvement irons, and used a statistician to prove the blades were actually more consistent and not much shorter. Blades will give you more consistent spin across the face, whereas the big cavities can cause fliers or dead balls with spin rates (esp really low spin rates) in a wide range. Most people need to try the opposite of normal fitting for irons, lower launch and higher spin.
I'd love to try the MBs. I play a combo set of the 699 irons and 699U utility irons. I love them, but I bought them after a couple of long conversations with a club builder at Sub70 talking about my game and what I was playing before- sadly, I didn't have an opportunity for a fitting or to test the other iron options. I've always thought the forged irons they sell are beautiful, but didn't consider them because at the time, my handicap was in the low 20s... but I'm now down into the low teens and wonder how I'd do with the 649 MBs, which are perhaps some of the most beautiful irons I've seen. Logically, I have no business touching them, but videos like this make me wonder!
I purchased the 699 Pro irons a year ago. I love them. Forgiving and definately make me look like a better player. LOL. Great review. I wish someone would do a side by side comparison of Sub 70 vs Takomo.
Your results with the “muscle back” iron got me thinking 🤔 … I’ve been playing PXG 0311 irons for over a year, and love them. And although the head is smaller than my old Ping G400’s, I seem to hit them more consistent. Could it be the larger “game improvement” head allows more slightly “off center” hits (thus, inconsistency) whereas the smaller head forces you to hit closer to the sweet spot? And although designed for better players (who hit the center more often), results in more consistent ball striking, even for us mid-handicap players? … just a thought great video 👍🏻 love your thought process. Keep up the good work.
Hi AJ, great review.have a question about hollow body irons. I have PXG Gen 4 forged and my ping i210 Wich is cast actually feel better. Don't hit the ping as far due to loft. But sometimes the hollow body seems a little off on distance. Some average some long. What's your thoughts on hollow body irons. Thanks. And great vid on your golfworks tool review 👍
So are you making a set of muscleback irons Ajay? Lol Looks wise I think I like the 2nd or 3rd head the best. My Golfworks STi2's arrive tomorrow so I am anxious to see how they hit for me.
If in Chicago land area call make an appointment . Do t just go there they are booked weeks in advance . They do custom fittings plan about 2 hours bring something to drink . Great clubs and yes the MB irons are incredible 90 bucks a club half the price of the Taylor made P70
I really like the 201 head, slightly more forgiving and great feel. However 1 negative. First, you can only get 4-pw so if you want different or matching gap wedge you're out of luck. The Sub70 also give you 3 different finishes including raw which I am always a fan of.
One thing you have to consider as well is that as you put different heads on the same shaft each one has different weighting and weight distribution. That can affect how the shaft deflects and it can also move your strike on the face. That’s why most fitters look for a head first that a player prefers and then matches the shaft to that head.
I have learned a lot from your club building videos but I have a question. Can you set the GC quad/ foresight sports 2020 for an automatic mulligan such that you could hit a number of balls from the tee on a par 3 rather then having to hit the m key on the computer keyboard repeatedly
201 is a little thicker and maybe just a touch more forgiving. Other than that, pretty close. Of course you can only get 4-p with Takomo so if you want a different configuration you need to look elsewhere.
I’ve owned the Sub70 639CB (same size/footprint as the 659CB) and have the NLG 902-OS. The NLG are smaller and have much less of a sole than the Sub70. I was shocked how small/thin the NLG were when I got them, especially for their larger more forgiving version of their forged options. Not near as forgiving as the Sub70’s are on the course, at least for me anyway. I’ll be selling my NLG and going back to Sub70 and the 659 series. NLG are just too thin, narrow, and unforgiving for my game at the moment. But that’s just my experience.
Looking at these for my 15YO daughter. She would like to pair these irons w/ Vokey wedges. She plays at scratch with US Kids Tour Series irons and wedges presently. Driver swing speed is about 86 and she hopes to hit 92 by spring. Any advice on swing weighting considerations that we ponder how to move forward?
I think total weight is always more important than SW. Swing weight tells us that all the clubs will feel similar but in many cases it should be determined by the component parts, ie lighter shaft will naturally have lighter SW.
@@EFG2 I know so little about club building that I didn’t know that a lighter shaft would lower swing weight. I guess I assumed that a head would feel (and swing) heavier with a lighter shaft. To have clubs feel similar, do you like to have wedges and irons matched on swing weight or with some short of slow progression?
@@EFG2 Do you have an opinion about graphite vs steel shaft for wedges and irons for a 15 YO girl who plays scratch with US Kids Tour Series clubs currently with a swing speed just below 90 with the driver? I’m leaning toward graphite so that the increase in weight isn’t huge. Should that be a consideration (why or why not)?
@@dm4789 You can get 80g steel shafts and 130g graphite so it really comes down to feel unless you are looking under 80g shafts. Would really need some more info or video to say what weight I would recommend without doing an actual fitting.
So much discussion and videos about blades versus split cavity or cavity back or hollow bodies etc. It’s been my experience that my worst strike with a cavity back/hollow body is much better than my worst strike with a blade. But this difference is really only most pronounced in longer irons (4-6). Let’s be honest, most players should not be carrying a 4 iron and some not even a 5 iron. The point is this game is hard enough already so why wouldn’t you take advantage of any edge that you can get. I play with a guy who uses Mizuno blades and he struggles every single time out there but refuses to change or even try something else. I just don’t get the blade elitism in some players though and I’m not some amateur hack either (5.8 hcap). Pros use blades because they spin more and that allows them to shape shots. For the average golfer more spin doesn’t typically help because it can make shots go more offline. Amateur player would benefit from more loft but not necessarily more spin. The first way I got my scoring down was switching from my blade wedges to the cbx2 wedges. Way better on my mishits and from then on in I transformed my bag. I have the Cleveland chipper as well that has helped even more. There’s a saying in golf “it doesn’t matter how, only how many” what helps you get the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes possible.
