Like MB makes special DEF... use any brand, just look on the label and ensure it meets the DEF ISO 2224 spec, which is specified in the MB owners manual. I haven’t seen any brands that don’t meet the spec. The service advisor needs to go to school...you need those hiway trips to ensure the particulate filter has the opportunity to regenerate properly..
Glad I know how to look after my 20 plus year old Mercedes sprinter as these new vehicles are getting more stupid by the day, Zero DPF, zero EGR valve, zero Auto gearbox It costs cheaper to keep old vehicles going.
My 2017 Sprinter 3500 has a DEF level “gauge” showing on the display between the Tach and Speedometer. You just push the up arrow on the steering wheel when it is in the mode that shows trip info (elapsed time, overall mph, and overall mpg). The gauge itself looks like a blowing cloud. When it gets to the 1/4 DEF level it also sends a message to the display to add DEF soon. Seems to be a very simple system that works well. The other way to avoid excessive service costs is to do a lot of your maintenance yourself - change oil and filter before 10000 miles, change your air filter and replace your fuel filter regularly.
Good information to be aware of. The “Magnuson-Moss Warranty-Federal Trade Commission Improvement Act” is a Federal law, US Code, Title 15 § 2301, Public Law 93-637. President Gerald Ford signed it into law on January 4, 1975. It covers aftermarket auto parts in these ways:
Why is my EGR valve always sooting up and causing transmission shifting issues? From day one. I have a 2022 six cylinder diesel sprinter and it has been in the shop at least 5 times. The longest was for 3.5 months.
You can cancel out the 8-10 re-starts count down meter. All by unplugging a wire under the dash. Mercedes couldn’t get my van in so we had to figure something out. Do some RUclips searches, there’s a guy outside the United States on RUclips that shows this. I don’t suggest this by anyway but it got us back in motion before we got it fixed.
Best tip to keep engine repair costs down is to ignore Mercedes suggested service intervals and change oil and oil filter every 5000 miles. Wal-Mart Super Tech DEF meets API standards so it is safe to use and cheaper too. I would say fuel filter change every 10000 miles. Yeah, oil in diesel engines turns black quicker than in gas engines because of soot, so why wait to change your oil at Mercedes suggested intervals. And since most Sprinters now have EPF’s and require DEF use the correct oil that meets MB requirements - like Mobil1 ESP 5W-30.
What do you do if there’s no highway where you live? I live on st thomas, a small island in the Caribbean. Never realized all this stuff before I bought it. Ugh

A concern I have is I do not see the Def fluid gage going down at all. Should the DEF be getting used? I have burned about a thankful of diesel since I got it. Thanks for your help
Good Morning Van. I plan to do quite a bit of highway driving in my van, but if I don't go on a long drive for a while what is a good rule of thumb for the number of miles or minutes/hours I should drive my vehicle on the highway a few times per month? Also, what is the usage amount of blue fluid I could expect to use driving around 10-20 thousand miles per year? Thanks.
Do Not Buy A Sprinter Diesel Or any Mercedes Benz.... Most MB dealerships will not honor the warranty.... Most times the dealership will blame the customer(owner of car/van). Just like VAN BAE does in all videos. Some customer faults in this video "wrong def" "not right mixture" "wrong fluid" "to low level" once they blame the customer the dealership will try to charge you thousands of dollars for a repair that should be covered under the warranty. Their "Technicians" are only part changers Remember buyer beware and that is never more true when dealing with Mercedes Benz
Look at the introduction page of the service/maintenance booklet. It explains that IF You use outside products, get it checked by an authorized Sprinter dealer to approve the work so that it DOESN'T affect the warranty claim and less probability of claims being denied. Take a look at this snippet from the service booklet: Service documents Confirmation that the service and maintenance work has been carried out is entered in the Maintenance Booklet. No other repair work that may have been per‐ formed on your vehicle is recorded or documented alongside the listed service and maintenance work in this Maintenance Booklet. For this rea‐son, keep evidence of this together with your vehicle's documents. So again, for better clarification: IF you take it outside authorized dealer, make sure you have records and are using ONLY MB approved parts. Thank you again and sorry for your bad experience. Please call me for your service needs.
