- I have few useful links for you:
Here's the link with full description and extra information and images/diagrams (also available in PDF format):
www.wheelsandmotors.com/manua...
If you are looking for timing belt tool set here's the link to relevant eBay page:
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Personally, out of all choices, I have chosen this one (works even on my new 2012 VW Sharan common rail engine):
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
If you are looking for new parts (belt, pulleys, tensioner..), here's another eBay page that will give you quality choices at a good price:
rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53...
Also in addition, because it's PD engine, for perfection torsion value needs to be adjusted, here's good article about it:

I would like to say a massive THANK YOU for putting this very informative video together (and the other timing belt videos aswell). I have watched them all several times over which really helped me successfully replace my timing belt, rollers/idlers, tensioner, water pump, studs and auxillary belt on my Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI PD engine. Admittedly aided by Haynes and free online workshop manual but with the combination of your videos, I was completely confident and got the timing spot on 0° without any VCDS. Keep up the great work and you have helped both me and so many more people save money and ensure that the work was correctly done being difficult to trust other people and some dealerships to do the job thoroughly with correct torque.
Thank you! :) I will do my best to make more of these.. And maybe get more people involved in WheelsAndMotors
Thank you ever so kindly gents...Excellent video... Step-by-step instructions.... There should be no major challenges if you watch and follow this tutorial...
Thanks! I'm glad that it still helps after all these years 😎👍
Thank you! Finally, someone clearly explaining from the beginning, to the end.
Thanks 👍
Im mechanic and ive replaced hundred of timing belts for all kind of makes of cars😊 i love this video when a proper mechanic follow the correct procedures congragilations🎉
Thanks 👍
A very thorough and clear presentation, all sharp, even hidden detail is clarified with mirror and good camera focus! really, "How to do it!"
Guys congratulations, an outstanding video. The attention to details was amazing.
Well done guys, made it very simple and precise. Congratulations!
Cool video! REally demistified the timing belt replacement process on such a car.
just purchased my first audi a6 at the tender age of 49 , and yep it needs the cambelt doing lol , Well done good vid ; )
You're welcome! Cambelts are easy.
Fantastic video, I changed my cam belt and water pump on my Chrysler seabring today. This has the same engine. Thank you
Wow! Good to know that it can be applied to Chryslers. Thanks :)
Best instructional video of this type on RUclips, well done my friend, fantastic😊
Thanks Raymond :)
I know this video is old but your channel has done so much for myself. Thankyou 😉👌👌
Thanks Daniel :)
Thank you mates. Been wanting to know this modern car timing belt changing procedure.
Best cambelt video I've seen, great stuff lads.
Thanks :)
Nice Video. Changed cambelt on a Chrysler Sebring 2.0 CRD with VW engine. Was a bit harder, because the cambelt is sideways and the crankshaft was very hard (i really mean very hard) to turn, but at the end its done. Thank you for this video!
Thanks :) I have a video with the same engine sideways (Passat):
ruclips.net/video/OffyDbc3jgA/видео.html
Great step by step video. Thanks keep up the gkod work
Excellently explained fantastically filmed viewing was a joy I'm soon doin my golf 2.0tdi mk5
👍👌
+abdul rashid On a Golf, engine goes across the bonnet, I have also video of a cambelt on VW Sharan, also can be reference:
ruclips.net/video/Tke2oHYHgoM/видео.html
do you have to check timing pump on vcds like the old vp and pd engines?
Great vid tutorial with clear steps. BIG THX.
When the bumper off, it is a good idea to replace the bulb with a fog lamp. One work and save time for future.
The roll pins should also be replaced with new ones, as seen in the timing belt kit already with thread glue.
Thanks :) In all my other cambelt videos I have replaced roll pins. They are definitely worth replacing - the do quite important job.
Would just like to say what a brilliant video I changed my a4 b7 cambelt kit and water pump and couldn't of done it without this nice one guys most respect, thanks
You're very welcome :)
That's for the detailed video guys! Really helps 😊
Thanks 👍
Fantastic video guys! Not scared to reach for the tool kit now!
Thanks, Nick :)
Great job guys! You are lucky to have tons of room: with that kind of room, I would do it blindfolded!
Thanks 😊
Nice clean video with clear instructions. I think I'm ready to do my BRD engine.
Thank you Abdullah, it's easy once you get into it 👍
You guys are amazing. Well done. Thank you 🙏🏼
You're very welcome 👍
Excelent demonstration. The best I've seen
Thanks 👍
Top lads. You were a great help showing me how the use the timing tool
You're very welcome :)
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thank you very much indeed, that's a really helpful video. Brilliant!
very very useful thanks from italy nice job
Great video guys, got one of these to do tomorrow, great help.
You're very welcome :)
I'd love one of these cars, reagardless of age, a nice huge estate (wagon) version! bags of room for kids and pet's lol, lovely cars though, very smooth and reliable which means they're worth looking after and dfefinitely doing the jobs on yourself! I love VAG cars.
This is a marvelous video.
I was scared in the beginning as I saw how to change the belts but your video showed how easy it actually is even if a lot of stuff around has to be taken care of in order to access the belts.
You are talking about 4x13mm bolts removed and insert the supporting bolts to slide the bumper off. What are the dimensions of the pipes on the supporting bolts?
I'd like to get them first and then disassemble the car rather than comming to the bumper, making measures, rushing to the DIY and continue afterwards
this really cool video, you guys really take yr time on it because is very sensitive engine
Hello, on which position should the speed selector be placed on N or P to extract the two gimbals of the box dsg 6?
thank you in advance.
Good video, don't you need to lock diesel pump on Audi diesels? Also my belt is the same colour as the one you changed, why do they look like rusty water has been on then on the tooth side? Thanks
hectorc01 Thank you :) Diesel pump is on the back of one of the cams, so is locked when you lock the cam. As for the rusty look, Dave thinks, it's the belt wearing that gives it that colour.
Very helpful video, i feel more comfortable about changing my belt and waterpump at the weekend, must get one of those mirrors too )))
Thank you :) Sometimes instead of mirror you can use phone camera - also gives you good idea which way to adjust.
All done no problems, my car is a jeep patriot which has the same vw/audi diesel engine but in the front wheel drive transverse position, a little tricky to work around the engine mount which i couldnt remove due to lack of space but other than that it went well, thanks again
deano1351 Well done! Glad if my video helped you :) Didn't know that Jeeps have VW engines.
at around 47:30 when engine starts I was like WTF you did not put in coolant yet!!! it was different car in the background lol
Cheers lads best timing belt vid on youtube. Keep up the excellent work.
Amazing video!, best i've seen ! So detailed!.
Thank you :)
Very good video , I like it , many thanks mate .
job well done, made it look easy, good camera work and we'll explained
+Neil Riordan Thanks :)
You guys are so nice. Thanks!
Thank you :)
Great video guys....just remember if using torque to yield tension (torque and degrees to tension a bolt) then you MUST replace that bolt next time around , it can not be stretched twice.
Thanks for the advice! On my new car now I always replace all bolts and studs.
A good nip has never served me wrong I prefer to leave block studs in place I never trust the aftermarket ones in kits maybe it’s time to try it and do the job 100 percent correctly.
Great Job ! It was very helpful. 5/5 stars !
Thanks 😊
Fantastic video beautifully done ..👍🏽
Thanks Nadim :)
Great video thank you what are the metal pins that you put in to hold the rad pack assembly and where can you find them ?
Have a look on eBay, they sell plenty of those.
Great Job thanks for uploading :-)
thank you guys so clear and fast (y)
You're very welcome:)
Thanks from Morocco for the movie !!
You're very welcome Mr Aladdin :)
Some people are just so extra I just did a timing belt the other day on a Volkswagen Jetta without having to lock the crank pulley or the cam pulley started the car runs great.
nicely put together video and well explained thanks very helfull
+Paul Duval Thank you :)
I get the help which i need Thank so much and keep going ...
Really useful video, cheers
+Dave Lister Thank you :)
Okul gibi mükemmel çekim ve anlatım teşekkür ederim.
Teşekkür ederim :)
Brilliant video, thank you.
Pleasure to see this appreciation :)
Un video muy util. Gracias.
Great video. Would the process be the same on a VW caddy? Should tread lock be used on every bolt or just the tensioner ?
Thanks :) It depends what engine you have in your Caddy. Check my other videos for VW cambelts. I use thread lock only on tensioner nut. One mechanic advised me not use it on anything that goes into engine block, because it gets cooked there and it may be hard to get out afterwards, especially studs that don't have heads.
Great job guys. I would have also changed the Thermostat at the same time to save the hassle.
Mr GShocker Good point! Thank you :)
Great video! How is the crank pulley stableised for tightening? And is torque required? As i heard a click on final bolt. It seemed some of the footage was missing..thanks in advance I would like to tackle this procedure myself just need axle stands and the belt kit and water pump.
I have another better video on cambelt for this engine with all necessary torques, but it's in Passat where the engine sits sideways. As the note for both videos - don't apply any grease on the O-ring of water pump, it may develop a leak. Here's the link to Passat video:
ruclips.net/video/OffyDbc3jgA/видео.html
Good camera coverage 👍
+Knight Rider Thank you! It was filmed on the phone :)
The good thing is that you covered the graphics as you were addressing the issues so your guidance and commentary reflected the repair. Also you did less talking and more work unlike others where they talk and do less. Thank you for sharing and educating us. 👍
+Knight Rider You're welcome :) And thanks for nice comments!
Very nice video thank you 🎉
Thanks 😎👍
so impressed mate , what camera are you using buddy ?? so clear
fantastic men! I loved it.now to do my a6 :-)
Good luck Derrick :) It's actually pretty easy, once you get on it.
great video. I have an audi a3 2.0 tfsi 2009 and need to do the timing belt. Are the locking mechanisms the same on this engine and
where can I get them
Sorry, I don't know much about TFSI :(
What grease was used to help install the water pump??
As i know some grease types aren't good for rubber.
This is very good point! People like to blame water pumps and say that it's VAG's weak point. But in reality - it's just a grease eating seal.
Following one of the comments (and from practical experience) I would say now - there's no need for grease, just make that seal wet with coolant - and it will not leak.
I wish I could change this point in this 5 year old video.
Fantástico video en primera persona, muchas gracias 😀🔝🚗
😊👍
Jan Seidel For some reason RUclips doesn't allow me to reply to your comment. Those tools where not mine, and I think Dave also borrowed them.. Maybe. Anyway, as far as i know they are pretty standard to all VAG group. Here I found on eBay timing belt set for VAG, and as you can see - it has the supporting bolts: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Master-Petrol-Diesel-Engine-Timing-Cam-Belt-Tool-Set-Kit-for-VW-Audi-VAG-UK-/221668544772?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item339c799104
Great vid guys , very well explained. do you have a vid on replacing oil pump and balance shaft assembly with conversion kit ? cheers Scott
Sorry Scott, don't have a video about oil pump and even don't have that car anymore. I can suggest you look for Elsawin on Ebay - it should have lots of useful info.
Great video very informative. I just have one question. Why do the cams need to be slacked off?once locked could you not, cut the belt, loosen the tensioner and fit new belt?
When you fit new belt, it has to be stretched properly along camshafts and then to the right down to crankshaft. If you just fit it as it is, then when it starts turning - timing won't be spot-on.
Super jo, super video love it .
Excellent job, thank you :-)
You're very welcome 😊👍
Thanks man good video
You're welcome :)
great video
Thanks 👍
awesome video. gives clear idea..
Thanks :)
Hello from England, mate. That Dewalt tool is it an impact driver or impact wrench? If it is a wrench can you possibly share some feedback? I have an impact driver that looks like yours and was thinking of getting an impact wrench as my impact driver is too weak for anything. I have been choosing between the bigger dewalt and smaller one. Is that small one have good enough punch with that battery or I just should bite the bullet and get a bigger one with better batteries. DIY application only
I live in England myself... So Hello from England to you too :))
That video is like 5 years old, I had to watch it again to remember that we actually had a power tool there :)
Yeah, that was Dave's tool and I can't say much about it. I have progressed since too have have some power tools as well - I have some crazy 900Nm DeWalt that is a bit bigger than that from the video. I suppose it all depends what kind of bolts/nuts you want to work with. I had to buy strong one, because I had to undo one really tight bolt in the middle of a crankshaft of Ford Galaxy, and till now it will do and undo any bolt for me, has 3 power settings to go easy on weaker ones. It's a bit bulky though..
They only get better when they "run-in". Best to have advice from tool shop guy.. If he's decent.
Excellent video. will this apply to the bkd in the golf?
Thanks. Engine on your Golf positioned across the bonnet, maybe this video will be more suitable:
ruclips.net/video/OffyDbc3jgA/видео.html
Great video! Would the a3 2.0tdi cambelt change be similar?
I don't know about a3.. Take the cover off - if it looks similar, I would expect it to change similar..
perfect again. What brand of sockets etc were used? They look the real deal.
Don't really know what brand - Dave used his tools. Personally I don't stick to certain brand - get my tools from anywhere, as long as they are good to do the job :)
Buen trabajo. Gracias por la ayuda 👍
Ничего не понял, но - пожалуйста! 😁👍
woow one of the best videos out there. you saved my day. only 1 thing you forgot. how tight does the rest of the bolts need to be that work with the timing belt???
camshaft pulleys - 25Nm
water pump - 15Nm
crankshaft pulley - 10Nm + 90 degrees
timing belt covers - 10Nm
please could you tell me more about the special bolts you used to move bumper forward, I just want to buy some so would need to know bolt size M8, M10, M12 etc also the diameter of the sleeve over the bolts thank you
Hi, you need m8 bolts, it would probably work with just m8 bolts, but I'm not sure what size the sleeves are :-(
@wheelsandmotors Hi, I've watched fair few videos of yours, and I must say great job! Really on point, nicely shown and explained all the way from bolt type to end of the process!
Now to my issue :D I have same engine, 2010 plate Avant A6, and I've noticed some grinding noise when I rev the car as the revs are coming back to idle.
My clutch kit and DMF has been just changed, and Cambelt kit was done few thousand miles ago with previous owner (I do have full vehicle history and documentation).
The only thing I dont see being changed is water pump.
So I am thinking, could it be the water puimp that is making that grinding noise or something else?
If anyone could advise ASAP please, cuz I'm paranoid to drive car like this in case it's something to do with belts etc..I wouldn't like to destroy my beloved Audi :)
Sorry Bo, I can only guess. Maybe try to get someone to listen where the noise is coming from?
Great video! I just wondered how you would go about doing a Jeep Patriot 2.0? same engine but maybe different software, I think there would be a big market if these could be sorted out by an Indie...
I don't make new videos recent days, sorry. If the engine in Jeep is the same - should be the same principle.
Very good!
good job larry b.
Thanks Larry! :)
Do you have a video for changing timing change on a Audi A3 1.6 FSI (BLP)
Not yet..
No problem, Done it now :)
Im wondering if you have a video to show how to replace the engine thermostat?
Not yet :) At some point in the future..
In the video looks easy and go for it , now my question about is how long time you need to have it done all togheter ? Thank you for your sharing , time and all i may try to get it done next week , just need an idea of time spend 😅
When I do cambelt, on my current car as well, I try to dedicate it all day, just in case if I get stuck with something.
I drive an audi a6 3.2 Quattro O5 and it's in good condition with 90.000 miles and it drives smoothly but as I slow down to turn or stop it's fine but when I press the gas and it gets up to 20mph the car begins to shake for a brief moment until I excelarate past 20mph would that be my timing belt?
+Joe Marin Could be - but, if I'm not mistaken, in your car instead of belt, you have chains. They last longer, but they stretch with time, that causes these problems.
Great video thank you. Just wondering were did you get your front end slid holder tools from please.
Thanks! It was while ago. Probably Amazon or eBay.
@wawayltd awesome thank you. What's the actual name for them please ive searched Google but nothing has came up 😭😭
Lock carrier seevice position bolts or something like service position front end support guide set, try this link:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175350240487?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=0RbtY2feRfS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=e5r-4xzcQQW&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
@@wawayltd that's perfect, thank you.
perfekt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Something you didn't make clear (or maybe I missed it) was that the crankshaft locking tool has to engage with a hole in the block to ensure you are at TDC. Also, you should not need to remove the crankshaft lock or turn the camshaft wheels to get the pins back in. If they don't go in easily at the same time after the two rotations then the timing is out. One last thing, where you say to set the bolts central in the slots, actually it's better to set them to the left of the slot as they move right when the timing belt is tensioned. Having said all of that, great video which shows a huge amount more than the haynes manual does!
Thank you for your comment. I agree to all you said. I have few more videos about tdi cambelts and there I start mentioning these things... Apart from the bolts to the left, which is actually very good hint - saves a lot of hassle. But I only got it recently and regret that didn't mention it in any of my videos.
Having just done this job yesterday (luckily on an engine I had removed so plenty of access!) I can confirm that the crank locking tool I used on the 1.9 TDI PD engine works on the 2.0 TDI PD too - mine was the one with the mark on the tooth not between them. I also noticed that the tensioner pointer moves quite a bit when tightening the nut. I'm assuming that it's where it ends up that matters...
I hold pointer in position by 6mm allen while tightening that nut. It must be done while engine is cold. With hot engine or running engine - it's all over the place.
I gathered from the video that the slots are there so the belt can 'find' the position of even tension on both sides. If that's not what they are for, and the timing is critically dependent upon having the same position for each pulley relative to the slots, why have the slots there at all?
The point of having them there - to be able to align timing perfectly by having the ability to move actual camshaft in relation to the outer sprocket.
hello guys, really good job. how long did it take to do all the job?
+Youness hammoudi It can easily be done in couple hours. Depends how well you know what you doing :)
My a6 c6 2.7 , makes a sound when i turn it on , my mechanic told me that might be this timebelt .
In how many km shoud it be replaced , and did you have the same saund when u turn it on
I didn't have the sound, I replace it regularly. If I remember correctly, for 2.0tdi of that time timing belt should be replaced every 100.000km or 5 years whichever comes first.
Newer engines have longer intervals.
good video👍
Jhonn Qim Thanks :)
Thank you very much ;)
You're very welcome :)
Hi, do you have a turbo replacement on tdi Audi??have a remanafactured one to fit to mine any info be brilliant, Regards Dan
Hi Dan, sorry I don't have that car anymore.. Hopefully, somewhere in the future I get to turbo. I have a Mk4 Golf for my mechanical experiments. Just finished clutch job and filming for my Sharan. Don't even know when I'll be back to the garage. Need to get back on track with my day job - I'm a breadwinner for my family. Sorry that I can't help currently..
...amazing...
Great video, very detailed. I’m going attempt to change my belt on a auldi a6 avant tomorrow, hope it’s similar to yours. One question, if you are to change the tensioner thread does anyone know what torque to tighten the thread to the engine?
That was a big question for me, because even manual doesn't mention that. They have torque values even for bottom cover bolts! :) I went into one respectful VW garage - they said it's 15Nm for both studs.
Thank you, ended up leaving the old threads in place as they looked fine. Now got a real problem with one of the pins that lock the cams stuck in my place.
I hate when that happens, common problem. Try carefully use nail puller, if plastic ball-shaped handle slips off the thread - find a metal nut (Halfords) that fits on that thread and use nail puller again. That's what I do anyway, and I always keep that little nut together with my cambelt tool set
Hi. I got audi a6 c6 (2010) and audi changed timing belt 60000miles ago. 5years.Do I need to change it again ?
How different is this engine to a4 2.0 tdi s line or are they similar?
So far didn't have to deal with a4, hopefully they are not too diffrent..
