    Psychologist Tim Kasser discusses how America's culture of consumerism undermines our well-being. When people buy into the ever-present marketing messages that "the good life" is "the goods life," they not only use up Earth's limited resources, but they are less happy and less inclined toward helping others. The animation both lays out the problems of excess materialism and points toward solutions that promise a healthier, more just, and more sustainable life.

    Materialism can never fill the void. I work in a school. Every day I converse with kids, teach them, help them. It brings me so much joy, I wouldn't change it for all the money in the world.

      Traveling is gay bro. You're prolly too gullible to realise that travel is all about travel industry which is consumerism. Sitting around and shooting the breeze with losers from other parts of the world isn't gonna make you a better person. If you wanna learn about how the world works and what other people think, read a book, listen to Jim Rome, get on Omegle ChatRoulette, check out the comments section of RUclips, and lurk troll participate in bodybuilding

    Thanks for making this video. I totally agree with it. Living in Hawaii, appreciating natural beauty every moment. With coronavirus, the ocean and sky look cleaner than ever. We do not need so much stuff to be happy, but need to eat healthy, to move (exercise), to sleep in clean bed, to keep our body clean and to wear washed clothes, and to have family and friends to care for. It is good time to know what is vital and what is not for your (my) happiness.

    An hour ago I was at Best Buy about to buy a surround sound system just because I could--it was almost like I was hypnotized. Then I made myself snap out of it and walked away, promising myself I'd go back tomorrow and buy it if I still felt the need to have it. It passed, but it's like a powerful craving.
    I have a flat screen TV in my apartment and no furniture. I use the box the TV came in as my coffee table. I have no sofa and sit on my yoga mat. What the flying fuck would I do with a surround sound system at this point??? lol

      +IMxYOURxDADDY exactly. We've set up a system dependent on us being weak minded consumer drones. It's mind blowing if you think about it. What the hell would happen if we started fixing everything that was broken, bought used, and only bought out of physical necessity... So much of our economy would collapse. But, we would eventually reemerge with an economy that reflected a better human being. It all starts with our children. But buying less for them means more actual parenting and quality time.

    1:05 “Research consistently shows that the more people value materialistic values and aspirations as goals the lower their happiness and life satisfaction and the fewer pleasant emotions they experience day to day. Depression, anxiety, and substance abuse also tend to be higher among people who tend to value the aims encouraged by consumer society.”
    1:35 “Scientists have found that materialistic values and pro-social values are like a seesaw, as materialist values go up pro-social values tend to go down. This helps explain why people act in less empathic, generous, and cooperative ways when money is on their minds.”
    2:05 “Studies show that when people strongly endorse money, image, and status they are less likely to engage in ecologically beneficial activities.”
    2:35 “We need to understand what causes people to prioritize materialistic values. For instance studies show that people focus more on material things when they feel insecure.”
    3:00 “Scientists also know that the more people are exposed to the media the more they prioritize materialistic values.”
    3:30 “The second principal for change involves promoting intrinsic values for growing as a person, being close to one’s family and friends, and improving the broader world.
    The research shows that intrinsic values not only promote personal, social, and ecological well being but can also act to immunize people against materialism.”

      What research, is what I'd ask? What scientist? I have a lot of very wealth friends, "Blue Collar Millionaires". We are all very happy. Very satisfied with our lives and what we've accomplished. Few of us experience depression, anxiety or substance abuse. You're confusing people who actually accomplish something with celebrities who don't believe they deserve their success. Or those, who didn't really have to work for something and know they don't deserve the success they have. It's called guilt. You might want to read things by real millionaires rather than what the media tells you. This video is about as "truthful" as the report Berkley put out that Americans were demanding gay marriages and accepting. Only to be discovered this "scientific report" was a hoax.

    We are WAY overexposed as humans. How many times a day are you bombarded with an ad or subliminal coercing to buy something. Snack, soda machines, supplies and even stupid trinkets are now in elementary schools (don't send your kids with more cash than lunch). We get hit on the Internet, RUclips, other social media, busses, cars, your favorite shows, musicians and their songs, commercials on tv, buildings, billboards, clothing your friend wears. How many times have your kids or somebody else not know what they wanted around Christmas, so they peruse catalogs and BOOM! They really want it now! They didn't needed it 5 minutes before, but now they do. We no longer buy out of necessity so companies have us by our feet because we are WEAK as individuals.

      It's called free market capitalism, with the emphasis on free, they are free to advertise to their hearts content, and we as consumers are free to choose to buy or not, no one forces you to purchase anything, that's what living in a free society is all about, that's why obamacare is bad, because it is the only time in America that you are forced to buy something or face a penalty, that's not freedom, that's called communism.

      Well said. I understand the problems of advertising but I'd rather live in my home country of Canada where ads are everywhere than in places like Cuba or North Korea where their are authoritarian restrictions on advertising and the government also controls the distribution of products produced in their country. Capitalism has its problems, sure, but I fear big government far more than I fear big business. No government should tell someone what they should buy, what they should sell, or how they should market. Unless the marketing strategy has serious legal and/or ethical concerns, it should be allowed.

    • @jcarter3238
      @jcarter3238 7 лет назад

      Kind of twisted the message; the last sentence said it all though. It's not an advertising problem, it's a people problem. PEOPLE could completely change the entire market and what's pushed with their power as a consumer. And per usual, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. If you raise your kids to prioritize and separate wants and needs, and to understand marketing and advertising, they would recognize the exposure to manipulate your spending, and they would stand a much better chance of becoming more responsible consumers. Companies will not spend boat loads of money advertising or manufacturing items or services they think or know won't sell. That was my point.

    One has to be careful with terms here. Materialism isn't the problem as much as one's attitude toward material goods is. If a person understands that happiness is more a product of outlook, attitude and priorities than of possessions, then material possessions can play a limited role in fulfillment. After all, it's through the material world that we all reach one another. The problem is the now rampant misguided conflation of possessing material goods (or the potential for owning them as expressed in monetary accumulation) with quality of life.
    There are many materialistic people and societies that know the place of material possessions, that use material goods to enhance quality of life, and that do not allow material possessions to interfere with happiness. The key is to have common sense priorities, ones that are poorly represented by perverse capitalism, where raising capital with the ostensible objective of accumulating as much monetary wealth and as many material possessions as possible is paramount. That is an illness.
    Dysfunctional materialism often stems from deep-rooted anxiety, fear of poverty, fear of ridicule, fear of humiliation, need for control, and/or need for power. It can stem from seemingly positive traits such as desire for admiration, desire to achieve, or desire to provide, but these are often just the flip side of the negative drives. Even when they are not, they can cause destructive results as the "zero sum game" is a real phenomenon, though rarely acknowledged these days in the long-accepted "rising tide raises all boats" common ideology.

    I used to be a shopaholic so badly that my cart would be filled with material items over food...everytime i shopped i would fill my cart with useless junk and then head to the nearest expensive StarBucks and buy expensive Coffee and expensive food items and later on that evening go to an expensive restaurant, and it almost became a daily habit
    I was a young stupid Padawan back in the day, but now detaching myself from material gain to lower my stress levels...I have become overtime a Jedi Master at it and saving more money by not spending so much...now i despise Black Friday sales because of how humans treat each other, and i sit at home cooking my own food and got rid of most of the useless junk i don't need
    Getting rid of stuff wasnt an easy task either because i felt attached to them, but i ask myself this question "am i going to use this item often?" Then I either toss it or sell it...took me a long time too because i had a lot of crap.

    Your message is really deep, sharp and clear. But still you have to put too much efforts to convey it to others. You have to make so many drawings just to convey a simple message. You can simply say this message in front of a camera. But you know, in this way, no one will listen. Because people need entertainment. Too much entertainment for all the time. This is also an impact of consumerism.
    I know that you know this but still... I just want to say.

    Intrinsic value and finding meaning in the work you do is important. Social relationships are important, etc. But we need to recognize the problems involved with central planning and trying to "engineer" an utopian society. The road to hell is paved in good intentions.
    As mises and hayek pointed out, the free market provides us with a decentralized system of information in society that simply can't be replaced by centralized planning.
    I'd prefer the freedom to pursue a my idea of a deeply fulfilling life in a free society vs having someone else's idea of what is best for me forced upon me by a socialist regime.

    • @moonlitegram
      @moonlitegram 8 лет назад +1

      Huh? What are you going on about??
      Did you misread what I wrote? You seem to have a highly critical/aggressive attitude towards central planning - a concept which I highly criticized in my post, and yet you're accusing me of propaganda and calling me wrong for essentially agreeing with you on principle?? Am I missing something here???
      On a side note, the US is not a communist country. It's somewhere between capitalism and what was coined as market socialism back in the 30's and 40's.

    One of the things I try to do is use the material things I've been blessed with to help others. I have lots of tools, and I've loaned them to neighbors and friends, or done work for them to help them out. I've also had friends lend me certain pieces of equipment that I've needed to do things around my place. I try to maintain my vehicle so it lasts longer, and won't be sent to the junk yard way too early. I compost what I can, and reuse it in my garden, but I don't beat on others about doing it. There's a lot of little things you can do to make life better without having to have all the latest gadgets. But I also try not to by cheap things that won't last that I'll have to throw away and buy another one.

  • @GoodyKitten

    I will never accept the notion that people buy things because they saw an advertisement or that subliminal advertising drives the goals of others. The real individuals at fault here are the ones that cannot think for themselves and try to place the blame for bad decisions on fictional forces that compel them. ANY human has the ability to stop and think critically about their situation. Take responsibility for your own actions and decisions by seizing your own personal freedom; do not let other people delude you into believing that your freedom is an illusion of subliminal control.

These tend to be liberal buzz words/ phrases. I am all for not living to purchase the next cool item. Simply buy what you need for a reasonably comfortable and productive life. I personally have gotten off the treadmill of consumerism. I no longer work 100 hours a week and I start a lot off sentences with the word "I". The desire of the eyes and the showy display of one’s means of life [do] not originate with the Father.-1 John 2:16.
    John mentioned “the desire of the eyes” as an enticement. The expression suggests that one can begin desiring something by simply looking at it. Note that Satan “showed [Jesus] all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth in an instant of time; and the Devil said to him: ‘I will give you all this authority and the glory of them.’” (Luke 4:5, 6) Jesus would not with his literal eyes see all the kingdoms in an instant, but Satan must have felt that the glory of these kingdoms, as presented in a vision, would hold some attraction for Jesus. Shamelessly, Satan suggested: “If you do an act of worship before me, it will all be yours.” (Luke 4:7) In no way did Jesus want to be the kind of person Satan wanted him to be. His response was immediate. He said: “It is written, ‘It is Jehovah your God you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service.’”-Luke 4:8.

    It’s true; the good life today is the “goods” life, just as the video said. Everywhere we go we see advertisements telling us what to buy. The government focuses on consumer spending because the government wants to fix the economy, but buying of material goods is hurting the environment. Removing public messages from places like schools will help shape future generations and get them out of the bad habits we have gotten ourselves into. Change will lead to a more sustainable world.

    No, you've confused greed with materialism, materialism is realistic, you need a roof over your head, food every now and then and preferably a bed. You don't need to go on expensive vacations or say explore the ocean in a submarine but life would be boring without it. Whats more. you say you don't what you need for "well being," an important concept in my world view, a flaw in yours.

    • @joslynbloodworth8261
      @joslynbloodworth8261 9 лет назад +14

      alex rad You've confused having your needs met with materialism. That isn't what materialism is. Materialism is defined as: "a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values." That doesn't mean our basic needs. That means stuff before all else. What you call a flaw in the world view of this film is, in fact, scientifically proven to be accurate and your world view is shown to be detrimental to true happiness.

We also spend more time outdoors which helps our health as well as our mental well-being. We work for broader social change: including things like rescuing dogs, helping our neighbors, and going out in the neighborhood in door-to-door ministry. It is amazing how much money we have saved! And even better yet, how our physical, mental, and spiritual happiness has increased.

One of the best examples of how the individualism is hurting the social tissue will be the crisis that is ahead, and it will crush the global economy again!

    Around 2:12 I can't help but notice that prosocial behaviors all have to do with examining your life instead of just mindlessly doing that which is "normal" (aka it's unusual for someone to ride a bike/walk over driving or to recycle). Whereas spending every dime you make and driving everywhere (even in lovely weather) are so normal no one thinks twice.
    The unexamined life really isn't worth living.
