Where can I get. That hobie casate insert , I would like to install it in my BKC peddal flipper drive hole in my kayak instead of a side mount like I've seen on a lot of videos with the water snake universal mounts
I built one of these for my Hobie PA 3 years ago using a 24# thrust watersnake motor. Easy to build and added a PWM Variable Speed control to save on battery life. I think the motor was around $125 - 150, the components for the speed control were around $25 on eBay. I use a 35 aH Duracell battery that I put in the front compartment of the hobie and just run the wires out from under the hatch cover. I left mine so that it could turn in the pod and use it to steer with little tweaks from the rudder control. The advantage is that it will turn in a tighter radius or move you sideways if you want. I can keep it from turning with my legs if I don't want it to turn. I just replaced my Hobie PA with a new Hobie Outback and used it last week for the first time and max speed was just under 4 mph according to gps. I like the idea of using the stiff wire to reach down and turn the prop, wish I had thought of it myself, but like you said just cycle the motor a time or two and you can lift it out easy enough. The only downside to the motor IMO is the prop, it gets banged up easily so make sure to buy extra if you can find them. Sometimes they are hard to find.
Hi Bill, Thanks to Kayak USA for posting this thread and for your reply as it helps all of us to know what others are doing in the area of electric motors on kayaks. Where did you locate your PWM electronics? Front Hatch compartment? Did you remove the plastic tray? I took the plastic tray out of mine so that I could easily store either the Mirage Drive or electric trolling motor out of the way when not in use. Yep, those PWM variable speed controllers are GREAT for extending your run time. I am really surprised the Minn Kota still offers the 5 speed motors as the PWM is the new energy efficient generation of trolling motors. Guess the price point is what keeps the 5 speed motors in the market place but they are energy hogs especially at lower speeds. On the motor Phil made for me he made an anti-rotation device with a knob on it. You can tighten it just enough to hold the motor in a straight position and you can still steer with the motor with the top handle provided if additional steering control is desired. John
Great vid. thanks! Anybody know if any of the Hobie cassettes fit the Pelican 130 Hydryve? I'd like to tackle this project to make the lake excursions easier.
Great Videos, I did this with my FeelFree 11.5 Lure and an old Minn Kota motor I had laying around. Unfortunately that motor just crapped out so I was searching You Tube looking for alternatives and possibly going to a rear mount. Thanks to your video and the prop tool (Prop Isolator Straightening System Stick or PISS stick for short) you convinced me to go back with the center console approach. Thanks Again! from your newest subscriber.
Merry Christmas ..!!! I’ve got a Electric Kayak Company kit setting in my garage that was in my old Big Rig for about 3 months… rear mount with foot steering…
I would like to see you upgrade the old town topwater 106 pdl. I just bought one and need to add an anchor system and want to add a trolling motor on it. What ideas do you have to help me out with this.
Nice set up on the PA...quick question that we’re trying to figure out is how can we rig a kill switch on the trolling motor cassette for safety in case the PA flips while the motor is running? Don’t want it running off & leaving one of us stranded. Thanks for the video...also like the Runkl boxes in our yaks & can’t blame you on waiting for a lithium batt option on the trolling motor.
Hello bro.. it's suitable for salt water? If it's not, if u dont mind, can u make a video that what trust trolling motor that suitable for saltwater.. thank my brother
That is pretty bad ass. I want to get one of those Bixpy drives for my kayak. My kayak is an Evoke Battleship 120. It's similar to that orange one you got that I've seen in other videos. The one your son stands on and fishes out of like a ninja lol. It doesn't have a rudder or nothing so I'm not really sure what brackets I need though. Do you have any suggestions?
Have you had any issues with water getting inside your motor? Been getting on every outing and having to re-seal and dry it out. Not sure if it's normal as a first time owner.
Neat budget motor build. Watersnake, and I think Sevylor also make a 24Lb the same size motor as the 18Lb. I used the 24Lb W/S in a build for the Wildy ATAK pod motor, and I can get 5mph, fully loaded out of it. I have a video on my channel of the build and test. I also used a PWM and 50AH battery from FPV, and they make the biggest difference to the motor conversion. 1/ Battery weighs nothing compared to lead acid batteries, and the PWM gives you SOOO much more useful control of the motor, whilst extending battery life. Great vid, hope you dont mind, but i have added it to my channel, under the kayak motor playlist. Well explained, thanks (and subbed).
I don't know what the weight your boat is but considering its carrying you, a heavy battery and all your gear that seemed to be moving pretty well. The weight and the fact that the boat sits low in the water would account for the fact that it took a little while to build up speed. But hey you are out there for a peaceful day's fishing, not water skiiing :-) !!
Nice setup . I have the Jackson Big Rig of course no mirage drive on this so I will have to put me one on the back when I do the thrust will be more . Keep the videos coming . Something else where I live in Florida we have a lot a Hydrilla .
great video. i have the same trolling motor set up on my Pa 12. It]s made by Tony Sebrens from Venture Tube. great little motor. i use a Duracell 35h battery and works great. half the size of the one you have and no issues.
Awesome, I’ll check those batteries out! Yeah , I love Tony’s videos, do you know why he quit making them? He use to have a pretty good consistent channel then he just stopped uploading..
@@KayakUSA1 yeah he hasn't put anything on you tube in about 3 months. Do not know if something happen or what. He got on the Hobie fishing team and then kind of stopped posting stuff. He still puts stuff on his insta gram channel
Good morning to you...have you ever needed to put an inline fuse in your wiring for your trolling motor...???...I put a minn kota 45lb on my Native Titan 12 and placed a inline fuse with a variable speed control switch but I can only get 3.5 mph out of it before it trips the fuse...any idea or suggestions as to why I'm having this issue...
@@petecampa 10 AWG might not be enough depending on the distance. I can run my MK 55 towing 2 kayaks about 900# total and no problems off 4Awg battery cable with quick disconnects. 10AWG isn't much.
Cool video! Thanks! Do Sevylor or Water Snake make a higher powered unit that will fit or is the small size due to the low thrust? I'm kind of a speed demon. Probably 'cause I grew up and still live in a NASCAR town, I guess. I'm also big, so 4 mph for you would be less for me. I was thinking that by unlocking and steering with both the motor and rudder, you would be taking an older Hobie and converting it to a powered version of the Mirage 360 drive boat. Pretty cool idea even though I have my doubts about the 360 drive. As is you've given it near instant 180 drive...no different than the Mirage 180...but not quite as instant as a prop drive.
I don't think the larger Sevylor or Water Snake motors will fit through the hole in a Hobie but would fit on the back. If you can wait til 2020, there is a new Torqueedo motor coming that is supposed to go 6 to 7 MPH, but at a much higher cost.
I went over the battery I’m using in the video, it will probably last a good weekend with normal use. I’m wait on the new ice hole battery tho, it will weigh less than half of this one🤙🏼
Just curious as to how long the battery life would be with continuous use of the trolling motor. Would it be possible to use the motor all day fishing?
Honestly I think if you used this little motor continuously you would probably burn it up especially at higher speeds.. It's fine for shorter distances but it does build up heat as I have noticed over longer distances. JMO
Nice video. We built a 24lb WaterSnake version and used a PVC sleeve and a knob so that we could set depth and direction. On top speed setting, it lasts about 3-4 hrs on a 55Ah battery and pushes the PA 17t at about 5-6 mph. Our only problem was the wire connectors to the switches. They were fine for short time, but the switches melted on a long trip once. I replaced them with heavy duty DPDT toggles for now, but plan on using a PWM when I get the chance.
I've got a minnkota 30. I get fantastic run time out of a 55? Ah Vmax lithium ion battery. 11lbs. Amazon like $500. I also have the 100ah Battleborn. But that lasts way too long @ I use a real tree cammo cooler as a battery box. Waiting for something specific, waterproof and that disconnects if you flip. I use kayaks for wildlife photography and with electric a can really sneak around. I put 400# me and gear on the kayak rated at 500.
I think that only the Watersnake or Sevylor Mini prop work on this motor, but regardless even if you could find a 3 blade prop it wouldn't go in or out of the hole.
@@bear8100 right on. I'm just giving info out. Mostly the battery. Mine mounts at the rear and had 550 cord steering. You get better control in the rear and double the thrust.
It's a "prop grappler". Well I was wanting a paddle drive but seeing as how you got one and still want to use a trolling motor then I may skip the paddle drive and stay using my trolling motor on the two yaks I've got, save me some money lol.
Also look up "kipiwa propellers" I just bought a 3 blade for my minn kota. They're supposed to give more power/torque and a little more speed, they make them for a bunch if different trolling motors 👍
Just a thought...you could drill through the cassette directly above the base (where it attaches to the hub) of one of the prop blades with a hole sized for your "prop vertical alignment tool". Then you could slide it down after shutting off the power and it would stop the prop from rotating past vertical. Then it is part of the unit rather than a separate tool. The idea is not mine but adapted from this page www.mfboat.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/IMG_5456-225x300.jpg
My point was why get a pedal drive kayak and remove the pedals because aren’t the pedals the main thing that sets this Hobie apart from your old kayak. I’m not hating or anything, I enjoy your videos. I’m just curious on your thought process

You need to make a drive tether, for when you don't have it in.
