- This week I'm on the water testing out the new NK300 kayak motor! In this video I will put this kayak motor to the test, testing its speed and power along with how well it steers my very heavy Hobie PA14 fishing kayak. I'll go over the differences between bow mount kayak trolling motors vs stern mount kayak motors and help you decide which kayak motor is BEST for you!!

I'm glad you like the steering and mount. Great video
Thanks again! I love this setup! The steering is so easy to use and install!
One hell of a system you made!
@@atamagashock thank you
I like the video. The difference in speed between the Xi3 and Newport is more than I would have hoped. It makes me less inclined to go with a bow mount. The spot lock seems awesome though.
I'd say incorporate the hunting into this channel... We all watch and have varied interests. IF it doesn't work then you can always exclude it.
Yes to bow hunting and yes to the rear motor!
Variety is great. Go for it
I can feel your pain Karl. I have had several fish to be disqualified. Unfortunately it happens don't let it get you down just keep pushing forward. I had one disqualified because I had his belly turned away from me didn't realize that made a difference. Good luck to you and your tournaments.
I agree, Hobie should release a motor friendly PA14.
It won’t be a kayak anymore but a boat
Love my NK180.
The 300 came out like 2 months after I bought mine, I was kinda salty but I'll upgrade eventually.
Fully rigged! I'd say at a minimum. Definitely a crazy set up & looks really nice, you have done a good job with everything! To each their own #1. That's a little to much for me. I've been kayak fishing from Hobie PA12'S for past 9+ yrs now. Have had PA12 - 360 just about 2 years. I love the 360 drive!!! Don't run any motors but I do have a echomap Ultra106SV, with a steady cast heading sensor & Lvs34 system. Powered by a single Amped Outdoors 32ah 14.8v lithium battery. Will run everything about 12-15 hours. The LS ducer is on a Fishing Specialties kayak bow ducer pole with their custom transducer mount. Much better than Garmin mount. Let's you adjust angles infinity! Besides those electronics I keep my rig as simple & light as possible. I can launch in less than 5 minutes. I hail my kayak in bed of my truck. So all parking at big lakes is Free because I don't have a trailer. Alot people don't realize you only have to pay to park if you have a trailer. Curious to see how need motor does & which is better that or the bow mount motor
Bro, that is a machine. I knew you'd get those speeds, and you're fully rigged. I also knew it'd, lift the bow off the water. 6 to 7 mph, on a kayak is very fast. They've earned their reputation, with that motor. It's actually the same price as my new Bixpy PP -768 I purchased this year. Another great addition to the boat..💯 🛶 🎣
Yes on the bow hunting. Incorporate,
Yes on incorporating bow hunting.
Bow hunting and archery competition would be good.
I have a Hobie PA 14 360 w/ the smaller 180 elec. motor. I have everything (basically) you have. So it’s heavy. I run 4.8 mph with my setup w/ the 360 peddle system in. One thing I would suggest that you get (I have it) is Innovative Sportsman make prop guard that is cheap and give tremendous prop protection and installs in minutes. I have foot control, but it doesn’t control the ruder, that’s a separate standard control. I really like the speed you are getting with the bigger elec. motor. I was injured in Vietnam. Fused at 5 levels lower back. This makes me unsteady to stand so I got a standup support bar (customized it) lowering it. Then thru TH Marine got the portable/adjustable (very light)out riggers. They aren’t in the way and when I’m running distance they adjust up out of water, but fishing running slow working the bank I have them down. They are small, quite and stable as hell. I’m old 76 yrs worth. I had to stop running my bass boat due to pounding on my back as I got older. Yaks are life savers. I wish I had your mechanical experience. Have additional Rod holders all around my black box plus Hobie’s H rail 3 rod holders that gets my working rods out of the way, easily accessible. I found the 6 rod tube when rods are in them, are in the way with foot controls installed. The addition of 6 mm custom pads is really a sound and standing cushionier. I have mounted h-rail horizontal and my Garmin FF is mounted there. I wish I had Spot Lock, but I game the 3 section (YakAttack) push pole and mounting rack with hole lock. Interesting just how much $$$ you can spend on a YAK ! Hope to see you out on the water.
Cool weather of fall does sound nice but I welcome the heat because it keeps so many people off the water! This summer I've done excellent, in dead heat of the day in super shallow water offshore. I've been catching some big girls! Between mide June & late August I've caught all these including my new PB 9lb 3 oz, 26 inches long & 16.75 inches in girth. Then a 8.6 - 8.05 - 7.4 - 6.1 - 5.10 - 5.8, two others just above 5 & multiple above 4lbs. An interesting fact is all of them were caught with my sonar off. I was just fishing waypoints. They were very shallow, if I had my sonar on I wouldn't get a bite from anything decent sized. When my sonar all off & not pinging I caught all of those! So something to keep in mind for supper shallow water. something to keep in mind for shallow water , is I believe that pinging was turning the fish off or putting them on alert!??!
I have the Riptide Terrova 55lb on a BSB 360 Pro and bought an NK180s just before they announced the NK300. If I would have just waited a little longer I would have purchased the 300. I haven’t even taken the 180 out of the box but after buying a $900 24V Lifepo4 for it I can’t justify getting the 300 and spending another $1,200 on a 36V battery. If the 300 used the 24V battery I’d get it in a hot second especially since I bring my wife and daughter fishing with me on the BSB 360. Yeah it’s pushing the limits but it’s more fun with them. Thanks for showing us how both motors work with your setup.
Yes to bow hunting. That’s perfect for me cuz I do both as well
Hi TJ, I just wanted to let You know how much I appreciate & enjoy all of your videos & awesome information on DIY projects. The Bow hunting videos would also be appreciated. I’m 64 & getting ready to upgrade to a PA-14 & do almost the exact same setup but will be fishing for Specks , Redfish & Flounder here in Virginia. I was wondering if the NV-300 would be good for saltwater? Thanks for all You Do & keep up the Great Work, Tight Lines & Stay Safe 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for your support! I’m not sure about the saltwater, I’ll have to look into that.
Newport motors are sealed for salt or fresh. (at least the NK-180 & the NV-300 are)
Can you do an update on where you’re gonna move the battery so you don’t get water over the bow maybe show us what kind of batteries in your set up for the motors
I tested a Hobie pro angler 12 and loved the comfort. Sadly my wife said there is no way we are buying a kayak again. ☹️
Your set-up is insane! I've followed so many of your videos w my own installs. (Portable power, Battery Box, Etc.) If I had any thoughts I would only say that maybe move the battery or some weight more aft and midline as your bow looks a little heavy. Now when is it going to be for sale? LOL
I was thinking the same thing, She’s not gonna be for sale for a long time!! 😂
Great video I just bought the xi3 I’ve bin watching some of your other vids and have learned allot I was just wondering do you run your GoPro on external battery
Thanks, yes I do 👍🏼
Hey TJ. So, my guess is that you stashed the XI3 battery in the front hatch. Is that correct? Can you show us what that looks like? I'm looking at doing something similar to my PA14.
Thing is moving dude. I only get 3.5 on my AP136
Awesome video TJ. Did you end up adjusting the height of the NK300 or no ?
Thanks, I left it alone where it was, it was working so well, I didn’t want to mess with it.
Yeah bring on the bow hunting. Great kayak build now I want to build one. Is that motor salt water rated?
I’m definitely ready for bow season! I’m not sure about the saltwater question, I’ll have to look into that, 👍🏼
Not sure if your xi3 is coupled with newport or did you leave newport motor down while xi3 was trolling? nice setup!
6+mph on that rig is crazy! You can see how loaded it is with how low it sits. I bet I could get well over 7mph in my PA, since I don’t have a 1/4 the weight on mine. Very impressive!
I was extremely impressed!
You may get 7mph but how long will the battery last doing that ?
Hello, with the charge indicator on the controller at 0%, what voltage does the controller indicate?
The rear propeller was creating drag. Try it with it up?
Would it be good for the Old Town Auto pilot 136?
Bring on the bow hunting, that would be great.
Glad to hear! I’ll be filming some hunts for sure!
...the XI3 is best for maneuvering the kayak when fishing...
Like your videos
Kayak USA I rewatched. I'm old and hearing is bad. What were the final Max MPH for each motor individually. Thanks Appreciate you doing this.Xi3 Max =
NK300 =
Would be a big help.
Thank you Sir.
No problem, I was able to hit 6.9ish mph with just the NK300, 4.5ish with just the xi3 and when I ran both it actually went slower that the NK300 😂
You should do the hunting videos on this channel to
With the peddle drive, picking one which do you think is most beneficial?
360 👍🏼
Thanks! What about motor? Front or back? Trying to ease into it with my budget… keep the videos coming!
They make a part to fill the hole.
So dumb question...could you get by with the NK300 as your Trolling motor?? Or is it too much power/noise around docks? I do see the value in the spotlock🐟 TIA
You could definitely get by with just using the NK300. It would just take some getting used to, but that motor is awesome.!
Are you running a 36v and a 12v lithium, or are you running a 36v and a regulator?
Are there stops on the steering to prevent going too far in either direction
It steers with the rudder so it is very precise 👍🏼
@@KayakUSA1 Gotcha , I thought you were steering with the motor, I’ll have to go back and watch your install video
At the end of this video, where is the Newport battery located? Inside the backpack? I ask because I'm trying to figure out where to place mine for best performance when my NK300 comes in for my NuCanoe Unlimited which will not have the Xi on the bow.
I just finished filming a full detailed walkthrough of my full setup, I went over every mod and why 🤙🏼 that video will be released this coming Monday
Looking forward to viewing it. Your videos are so well done and your work and reasoning so well explained. BTW, hope your audience showed enough interest in the bowhunting for you to add some of this.@@KayakUSA1
Would the NK300 be to much or overkill for a 2022 Hobie PA12?
It would be great!
No such thing as too much motor.
I plan to put one on a Native Titan 12
If you take all the weight out of the front of boat so how is plowing water would be much faster looks like trim reg boat with trim all the way down
This is not a kayak, this is a super market
Does the app work with other battery brands?
Would it work with 3 12v lifepo4 in series?
Thanks
That is some serious FU money
So this thing is definitely gonna be faster than the xi
Oh yeah! Way faster
they good but the nt300 is only 43% efficiancy hence it only uses 37amps at max.. a real 80lb thrust motor has 85-90% efficancy and max speed uses 60amps.. so if you think the nt300 is fast then try a real 80lb thrust motor.. you be going 12-13mph on max
I run the NK300 not the NT300 🤙🏼
Comparing apples to oranges.
Yep, That’s what I said in the video.. 👍🏼
You are limited by the hull speed/displacement speed. All that power is highly inefficient
Yup all kayaks are barge hull designs.
The next thing manufactures need to do is make the hulls faster to match the next generation electric propulsion options.
@@riverpirate1022 Its very simple to make a displacment hull faster, just make the water line longer. Next generation or not, this is the only efficient solution.
I hope kayak manufacturers like Native start making hulls built for more speed to go along with the advances in electric propulsion.
Motors like the NK300 are capable of more speed than this with a hull that's not a barge hull design.
I guess that will be the last evolution in kayak design, the hulls are all very old barge designs right now.
Is 1.3 mph faster actually worth the extra $500?
Hell naw..
Spot lock vs no spot lock
Removing the XI3 is breeze with the simple pull of a handle vs the 300. No brainer..
Why not get a boat? 🙄
Because I have a boat…. And a kayak…. 🙄 Thanks for watching.. 👍🏼
I run two New Port NK300 Motor's, with four MillerTech 36V-60 Amp Batteries. NOTE : ( Two Lithium Batteries Per Motors, that gives me 120+ Amps for each New Port NK300 Motor ) ....You just don't get any better...>>>> Good Choice Buddy !
I run NP 180 with 24 volt 120 amp lithium 60 lb batterie on my Hobie PA 360 14ft. I have my lights and Garmin on a 12 volt 28 amp battery(10 lb). Speed stays around 4.7-5 mph.
What do run 2 NK300s on? Type of yak/boat?
Larry .. A very modified Blue Ski Boatworks by Jackson, called a TriCat 360. Seven feet wide - 13.4 Long . Boat is a 3 pontoon type, now it's 5 Pontoons . two man fishing package with mods 97 square feet of stand up casting room .@@larrymoss9954
