Sony used ALL of their creative power to come up with the words "Walkman", "PlayStation" and "Trinitron" and proceeded to spend the following 30 years spitting random numbers and letters
If you’re wondering, Sony CD Walkman & Discman players make beeping sounds while they’re paused to indicate that the disc is still spinning inside the player.
you see, if you read the manual it tells you how to wear the earphones, i once read the manual that came for my sony xpera back in 2012 that had the same L side short and R side very long earphones, lemme blow your mind... R side wire the long one, goes behind your neck and doesnt hang infront and removes the stress on the L side short wire.ofc nobody knew that and just hung the long wire under their chin and called the design stupid. i was doing that for over 2 years before i found the original box and decided to read it cuz i was bored. and yes after finding that out i felt sooo freakin stupid and when i corrected it, that design was better than even the modern ones that have equal lines and wish they come back again.
I have a CD Walkman that has an anti-skip switch that I always have off. I can tell you I have had it for years and its quite banged up but I can count on one hand the amount of times its skipped. Quite incredible.
our parents bought my sister and I identical ones of these from a couple years later, and they kicked ass. the batteries got changed to rectangular ones that were thinner, so the CD player was like half the thickness of the one in the video, and the buttons all got moved to the side. the anti-skip protection (remember that?!) was so good I could put this thing vertically in my pocket and RUN. then I got an ipod a year after that and it was over
Optical out on Sony mobile devices was often part of the normal headphone jack, without a S/PDIF plug. If it has that, there will be a red-ish LED visible through the headphone jack.
I spent way to much money on fancy anti skip portable cd players back in the day. Had some pretty nice ones though. My dad had a subscription to Columbia House for like a decade and it was kinda amazing bringing CD's to school. I remember playing Territorial Pissings by Nirvana for my Grade 1 class mates and them thinking I was a freak. Good times.
I still use a discman BECAUSE FOR SOME REASON A NEW (2021) MODEL MICRA WITH THE HIGHEST TRIM LEVEL DOESN’T HAVE A CD PLAYER. IT’S RESERVED FOR LOWER PACKAGES FOR REASONS MY MIND CAN’T COMPREHEND. AND THIS CAR HAS BOSE SPEAKERS, IF THAT’S NOT AN INSULT IDK WHAT ELSE IS.
Because people just connect their phone straight to the car now? CDs are old technology, be like me complaining my car still doesn’t have a record player
@@Im_helpless physical formats as a whole are experiencing a resurgence as the graphs show. Also cars never had a record player and records are intended to be stationery
@@Im_helpless the thing is, almost nobody wants to have to connect a phone to their car to listen to music, mainly because of all the trash you have to endure with it... physical media is coming back faster than ever simply because people are tired of being forced into what companies want them to do.
Too few people using the CD players in their cars so they got rid of them. You may put the music on your phone and connect it via Bluetooth, or better, via Aux. Cables are more reliable than Bluetooth can ever hope to be. And thankfully flash storage has gotten so cheap that putting your music library onto your phone would no longer be an issue for most people
I have collected a few portable cd players and my favorite is a sony walkman (if anyone cares its a D-E220) and they are really good even today. Plugging in them in a cad (since new cars usually doesn't have a cd player anymore) or to a hifi stereo or headphones. I also love that you can choose between AA batteries (or aaa adapter inside the battery slot) or regular power brick.
I had a disc man back in the day (probably got it in like ‘04 or ‘05) but being able to read RW discs was a big deal, my parents didn’t like me using their physical CDs, so I’d rip my own copies, and those copies couldn’t play on everything. (I’m not sure what about the technology on the RW disc is different, but it must be something, because not every player was equipped to read them) loved my cd player, unfortunately I don’t know where it is now, kind of hurts to think that it’s most likely in a landfill
I've got a few Discmen in my horde of old electronic nonsense, including one very similar to this one in design ( a D-EJ756CK, to be specific). I think it's the one I've gotten the most mileage out of. I'd bring it on trips and whatnot all the time, and even now, if I just want to pop in a CD real quick, it's the one I go for. So yea, I like it. On the other hand, I've also got a D-2, which is from the early 90s, and it's amazing just how much these things evolved within the 90s. Because that one is big, blocky, the controls are annoying, and it skips like a maniac. The only thing I really like about it is that it's got a little window in the lid so you can see the disc spin. I don't know why, but I've always thought it was neat when you could see the disc in motion as it plays.
5th grade me is looking at that CD player being swung around like that and not skipping in absolute awe! Mine used to skip when the bus hit a bump on the way to school.
6:25 looking at this right here makes me sad because all i can think of is this is where the industry turned where people realized that if we keep making good durable product worth selling we cant keep selling it
When I was a kid, I had a discman and all I listened to was the Shrek soundtrack, Ride the Lightning, Hellbilly Deluxe, and whatever Green Day album was the thing in the early '00s. Simpler times.
I remember my dad buying a portable cd player when they first came out got it for the car. But he didn't cheap out on it got everything with it tape adopter and charger for the car and it was a Sony player so wasn't cheap back then.
Wow I'm impressed it didn't skip. These kids haven't a clue what we went thru on a ride to school. Jus 1 little bump and she skipped on ya. Piss you off to the max. Damn pot hole filled crappy roads
To this day new Sony headphones have those roadmap manuals and the only reason still is for multiple languages (at least that's the case with their low-end/mid-range stuff)
I used to have one sort of like that! Mine was a Sony I got at the flea market for $5 or so. Brought it to school and had a CD or two spare in my backpack. It was interesting going to school. Had a pair of COBY headphones that had big blue orbs in the sides. This brought back memories. They sounded pretty good for way back when too!
I always wonder how the anti-skip worked. I'm assuming they probably pre-loaded a buffer ahead of the playback so when the disc skipped, it had some padding. I'm gonna google it
This nugget is the same age as me. I never had one but I did have an old cassette player and one of those tictac mp3 players. It was unfortunately stolen from me in middle school.
those sony mdr-j10s were the only of those old style earbuds I could ever wear when I was a kid, I had a few pairs and I always broke the ear part off so they were just sideways earbuds, also pretty sure those are responsible for my tinnitus.
I had one that was so incredibly similar to that one, but the screen was closer to the bottom. It was awesome! Buttons were also on the side. And it was marketed as usable for running, and yeah you could, no issues with playback.

Wow, I somehow remember the design of the earbuds those came with. I'm quite sure there were also ones with the same molding that weren't so uneven in cable length. I still like those (and some other Sony earbuds you've covered another time and were not a fan of) more than I do IEMs, not so much because of their sound but because of how they feel when worn while still being nice and compact.
I had the MDR-J10 headphones you show at 1:52 as a kid, they were my "main" ones. I picked them up a couple years ago to check them out and they sound like utter crap. Simply terrible.
Bring it back to my time. You know, I still burn these CDs. Yup cause they sound better and I still have the OEM player in my car. Yup no Bluetooth. I do have an fm transmitter but they don't sound as good as a good old cd. Cheers happy new year
I had one of these from Panasonic where parts of the lid was clear see-through, they actually just read the whole CD and save it to local memory. That's why flipping them around don't do anything.
Everyone who actually used portable city players back in the day knows that Sony with G protection was the absolute only way to go. Every other CD player skipped like crazy the second you moved it or touched it.
what did you use to burn the disc? as when using finder and copying a file to the disc it makes a mp3 cd when using itunes you can choose audio cd so everything should beable to plaay it or mp3 so only advanced cd playes can play em
So growing up I found myself not apart of one cult, but 2! JoHo's and SDA. At 12 years old I was a huge hard rock/metal fan. But I wasn't allowed to listen to ANYTHING that the church wasnt in approval of. By xmas time when asked what I wanted it was the model from just before this one, Discman in the video. I thought I finally had a way to listen to the music I wanted to (Disturbed, ICP, Slipknot, KoRn, etc) I just have to use the first album slot full of my regular stuff (Flyleaf (christian band at the time) skillet, etc etc! I ended up with 8 albums worth of tunes and 7 of them were just... omg.. So fast forward a few months, my step mother (fiery puerto rican woman who was also a teacher at the church school) asked me if the discman was all that I had hoped it would be and I said yea absolutely. "Good deal, here, let me have a listen" I handed that thing over to her with the most shit eating grin EVER! I had been planning this for so long and my absolute FOOLPROOF plan was about to be put into action. So, I made sure it was off first when I handed it to her so as to start playing from the first album, first song. It was one of the safest christiany songs out at the time and she was very familiar with it. Then out of nowhere.... she doesnt press the next song button... WHICH IS THE LOGICAL PLACE YOU WOULD GO TO RIGHT I MEAN DAMMIT MAN.... she pressed the next folder button and I almost pukepooped.... Definitely peed a little... The next album in line to start playing as Disturbed's first album... Someone is gonna die when you listen to me! Let the living die, let the living die, say!!" ................ dammit david draiman.... Long story short... I got grounded for like... I think that one was my 3rd time being busted listening to secular music, it took me a whole 2 months that time to get my music back.. Damn her being blind as shit cause of diabetes and not being able to see she was clearly pressing the wrong button... Sigh... I miss that woman... RIP _> .... Having parents strict enough to enforce their rules.... I'd say not many others ended up in the same kinda punishment soup I made for myself that day. Eh? WHAT SAY YOU!

There's a reason the remote has a shirt clip on it... so you don't have to hang it off your dang ears :P Also the batteries probably take like 8 hours to charge

I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually just spam a bunch of binary code and use that as the product names
It’s genuinely so funny to me that “PlayStation” has become an iconic name. It sounds like a generic Famiclone you’d find on Amazon lol. “GameBrick.”
Along with the XB-1000
betamax and handycam are pretty good
Man don't you just love the Sony

My pretty low-end sony earphones came with a manual that was so big it was coming out of my couch. I think it was newspaper-sized at that point.
Totally used a Sony CD player line out to a 1970 pioneer amp for a long time. Wasn't until about 2005ish I got a soundbar
So that’s where all the Argos discount warehouse stock went, they had loads of these!
The last discman I owned. Got it free with the only camcorder I ever bought. Gave it to my sister when I bought an MP3 player a year later.

Yep, that's exactly how they did it. It would read the disc a couple seconds ahead of the playback

The longer side of the cable goes around the back of the neck and the weight is relieved by the clip. I thought Wade grew up with this kind of stuff?

I used to have that exact same one. Except mine was the higher inversion with bunked stop and painted like the inside of a seashell

I'm pretty sure EJ250 is a Subaru engine designation
You probably have to enter Charge mode for the batteries to charge.
some players don’t like burnt cds and won’t read them when they’re burnt at a faster speed. try to burn them at 1x.
british connector is not europa flavour (this post was made by hate them brits gang

I'm from 03 too.

Oh! I have one!

The good thing about standards, is that there are so many of them.
The one I had cost like 200$ 😅
I winced when you whacked that cd player over. Old habits.
eww. That power brick has the cable coming out the wrong side
2:00 lol
I think my dad used to have that
Am I the only one who thinks it looks like a FireAngel smoke alarm?
I have this one
Do you know how to turn the beeping sound of when you pause?
Europa? That is British!
For some reason the ps5 also comes in a box with the flap connectors; so they're still doing that for some reason.
