My favorite part of these videos is always the sound comparison on the ear stand. Even though I don't have any high end audio equipment, it's pretty evident which audio is superior when I'm listening from in my car - the absolute quality of the sound space from the AKG recording almost makes the Sennheiser sound *flat*, which is insane because of how the sennheisers themselves dominate comparisons against the budget/consumer stuff in your other videos. I could probably watch a whole video of just direct audio comparisons on the ear stand
I own 3 grado headphones pair and I have to say that his setup doesnt do them justice though. When he soubd test them on the ears the high ends are like a screeching sound but when you wear them its, as he said, sparkly
Being honest it’s a very silly thing. Like he says they are not good representations. Here’s an example. You’re a photographer and you need a monitor that is colour matched to real life to edit your photos. Instead of going to a store, you watch RUclips videos on your phone of someone pointing a camera at different videos. That would be stupid, right? The camera changes the monitor’s colour, RUclips messes with it, your phone screen messes with it and you can no longer compare how accurate the monitors recreate colour. The same goes here, they’re fun parts of the video but you just shouldn’t think anything about it.
im so used to the scooped mids i personally like that sound better. ive never liked the sennheisers mids. the ride on the comparison track is too intrusive. for reference i use a fisher stack and 2 floor speakers from the 80s that i got from dad. sounds amazing after i changed the cracked speakers :)
I love that the Fiio made the earbuds sound good even though they were pushing the limits of the buds when they were connected to it, just goes to show how good the m17 is! what a wonderful nugget!
Right? Through the diablos, they got the tinny, grindy "I can't handle this output" buzz while they still sounded perfectly cromulent through the Fiio.
@Marauder I've always preferred Bad Guy Good Audios ear than Crin, he likes a much more neutral headphone though. Bad guys loser to the harmen target which modern music is mastered for so it really depends
I'm not an audiophile, but the wireless Dualshock 4 controller being able to pass audio from the ps4 to my decent quality headset to hear the elden ring audio was an experience I didn't know I needed. I could relate to your joy of the Miio M17 being so convenient, even though there's really no comparison.
Both, both is good. I want all the cameras AND all the headphone jacks. To paint an unrealistic picture, I want a box that'll capture and recreate the world as though, no, better than if I was there in person. 8k video capture and playback, studio-grade recording and playback of FLACs through the k340s without a lick of hiss or hum, a studio in yer pocket if ya will
Earlier tonight I was listening to George Benson's Affirmation live version on my boss's Tidal to see how it sounded on his PA speakers, and I let it start one of those pseudo radio stations where it plays stuff it thinks you'd like based on the song you start with, and no joke, within like 8 songs it had played both Walk Through the Park and Scarlet Fire as well, without ever listening to them on Tidal before. You're influencing the algorithms, mate!
I'm only watching this through a budget television I have in my bedroom right now, but the difference between HD600s and the K340s was still *alarmingly* apparent. Like holy crap did the sound suddenly open up like I just pulled cotton wool out of my ears.
Same here! I’m watching this out of a TV, through the built in speakers, and yet the difference is crystal clear. I never expected to hear the HD600s pale in comparison to anything just through my TV speakers.
That's the genius thing about the comparative samples. Yes, there's no point in recording a set of speakers to show people how they sound, because it will just sound like the speakers playing the sample. But by including another sample of a different set of speakers, you can show the differences and give people a better idea of which set they like more. I'm really glad to see audio reviews include the comparisons now.

I love FiiOs stuff. Their BTR series was a game changer for my lower budget audio experience. The portability and versatility of them is crazy. I plug it in as a UBS DAC, meanwhile it's connected via bluetooth so once I have to go I just unplug the FiiO nugget and am on my way to where ever. Also very cool that my BTR3K had a clip case included so I can just clip it to my pants or bag or anything really so I don't need to feel *the bulge* in my pockets. Can't wait to expand my equipment. Thanks for introducing me to this neat hobby.
I might be a bit late, but you don't really need to spend thousands on a good audiophile stuff. Dank also has a guide for budget ones. You can check it out. The higher you go to a point, the less difference you will hear.

Maybe some EXTREMELY technical music might make the difference more noticeable, but by and large people can't tell between lossless and modern 320kbps.
7:40 I absolutely agree on the AKG k340's being something else and special to this day. Got mine for 90€ and after over a year of owning them, my final setup has them hooked up to a full-blown speaker amp. Forget portable DAPs if you want to run them cheap: mod the cable to balanced, hook them to a full-size amp and hear them light up! Yes they are still bass-light, but the lows that are there are astonishingly clean, well separated and that's to say nothing of the legendary highs.

Man, it's like you read my bloody thoughts - when you were talking about how powerful it was to comfortably push through 600 ohm headphones, my immediate thought was "I wonder how it compares to the Diablo in terms of amplifying sound?" Spooky, but also entertaining as hell! This makes me wonder if there are smartphones that are close to specializing as DAPs, since I often find that most of what I use it for is internet, mobile gaming, and music, if not exclusively.
The LG V series are the only ones getting a bit closer to these dedicated DAPs. Even then, they're still no match for something like iBasso DX300, Hiby R5, etc

What a coincidence, I was looking at this thing less than a week ago, just to kind of see its specs. I was mostly just looking for what options were still out there if my Sony NW-A45 would suddenly die, taking into account only memory size and battery life, so this big boy would obviously not be a good contender, but boy is it cool to look at.
I use Poweramp with my Fiio M6, it cost 10$ or so but was well worth it, especially for the parametric EQ, you might want to give it a look, it's really good. I usually start with the Harman Curve and tweak it from there. I also recommend the "Improved" Poweramp skin, it's free and really nice looking.
A good DAC/AMP really just transforms your music. I just got a chord mojo for my hd650s and let me tell you, I am listening to some of my favorite songs and hearing things I've never heard before. The music is just so much more fun now.

I rediscovered my FiiO E7 USB DAC from 2010 and now use it with an old android tablet drive my hifi. I was so excited to see the fii0 usb interface work over OTG. It's Night and day quality compared to the built in line out. People used to say an external DAC is the most essential first upgrade. It's still true today.
i was wanting to email you about this, because it just occured to me you may not have that little ipod nano quarantine jar anymore, but if you do, you ought to put a hole somewhere on the jar, maybe on the top of the lid because if those nanos explode, then it's gonna get real hot in there real fast, and when gases in airtight containers get hot, they expand, and an explosion makes this happen real fast so if it explodes, the jar is now suddenly a vessel containing a huge amount of pressure, and since it's glass, it's probably going to shatter along with the ipods, therefore meaning it's not going to do much to contain the explosion because it can't so if you put a little vent hole in there, that pressure will have a place to go, so at least you're controlling where all that pressure is going
The headphone jack is still on modern phones, but you have to drill the hole yourself! Seriously though, great vid, I love hearing you enthusiastically talk about something you've come to love
Thanks for the tips Dank, I've been very satisfied overpowering my Samson SR850's with the ifi Zen DAC beside the JLAB Go Mic, all of which you suggested lol

Love your video! Very nice that you actually reviewed PDAP (portable DAP), I'm more into ChiFi because i'm a cheap.... person. Started 'audiophile' DAP with the Hiby R2 (the little cousin of the one you showed), it was $80 but it had wifi and could stream music. Recently upgraded to Shanling M3X at $400 (still cheap compared to the M17) because it has 4.4mm balanced and both my planar headset and IEM have those output. Something that should now last me quite a while... (maybe?) (In all honestly though, I only watch the videos because of Franck)
That big giant brick would like as the m11 I have is one of my all time favorite DAP players. It doesn’t need to be slick and thin. Honestly rather have a device that capable of driving pretty much any set of cans I throw at it. Then a engineer and very picky about little things like hiss and etc on headphone amplifiers. The m11 does the job well and delivers nice crisp audio.
Glad the see the m11 gang is still out there. Personally I would not upgrade from my m11 any time soon because all DAPs today only support 1 memory slot and I'm already running 2TB on my M11 so it somehow feels like a downgrade in the current landscape to ...upgrade.

I love how everyone but apple is bringing headphone jacks back at this point. They just refuse to add the most basic and most demanded feature so they can sell you a dongle
they don't want to sell a dongle, they want to sell you AirPods. I'd really like an headphone jack back on the iPhones, but I don't see flagship phones as of right now selling with a jack, also I also value a good water isolation...
Yup, as far as I'm concerned if it doesnt have a jack it aint worth jack. Very happy with my motorola g Power that was both built in 2021 AND had a headphone jack.
This was an awesome video! Ive been on the fence since you starting showing these but im sold. Im also trying to restore my Audio Technica ATH AD700's which are ten years old but they are the first headset I bought when I started working. Im looking forward to using those with whatever DAP i purchase.
The K340s are god tier! Back in the day I had a pair of K145s - same drivers in the K135 body - and they were lush. Wish I'd taken better care of them, but I had no idea they'd become unobtainium!
I can also confirm the BTR5 works wonders and gets pretty decent range. Since it comes with a clip you can basically put your phone into a pocket and clip the nugget to your pants, then off you go. Or if you don't mind looking a bit silly and have a removable cable on your headphones get a very short cable and clip the nugget to the headphone band. Now it's fully wireless!
I've got a BTR1K that I use with my modified* HD 280 Pros to turn them into Bluetooth headphones, and the reception is great; I can easily walk a room or two away before it starts to buffer. It's nice and tiny, too, about the size of a slightly chonky flash drive, and it was only $50. And yet it's got USB-C, supports Bluetooth 5.0 with all the major codecs, and even works as a USB DAC. It won't drive big stinking headphones like the AKGs or HD 600s very well, but it'll handle up to 100 Ω cans just fine. I've got the 64 Ω version of the HD 280 Pros, so it's been great for me. *I ditched the original cable and mounted a 3.5mm jack in the cable hole, so I can use any cable I want, or stick my BTR1K on there with a male-to-male 3.5 mm adapter. They still sound just as good as they did with the original cable, too, at least to my ears.
I proper love all your videos I found you while looking at a tutorials taking apart and ipod and ever since them I've been hooked on these videos keep up the good work bro!
The size of that thing reminds me of that silly large Energizer "phone" (brick) that was teased a few years ago, though the Fiio actually has a reason for being that thicc lol
The thing that scares me about these is they run on Android. Part of the reason i switched to iPhone is because of how fast apps and firmware stop getting supported on Android. I missed out on Pokémon Go in the beginning, because I had a Note 4, which was barely 2 years old, and wasn’t eligible to download the app, or any new version of Android by that point. I can’t imagine dropping $1800 on something that won’t be able to run some music streaming apps in a few years.
I never thought I'd find the HD600s to feel small and closed-in but holy cow those AKG K340s sure are something also you probably don't need to carry any weapons in sketchy parts of town with an M17 you have a self-defense weapon lmao

Smartphones: "how many cameras do you want?", "yes"
DAPs: "how many headphone jacks do you want?", "yes"
If only we could get some of those headphone jacks on the budget daps. I’d love something with a balanced output for less than 300 eagles
I hate that, put a headphone jack with decent DAC and take away the unnecessary gimmicks like extra cameras and LiDAR sensor that never use.
Both, both is good.
I want all the cameras AND all the headphone jacks. To paint an unrealistic picture, I want a box that'll capture and recreate the world as though, no, better than if I was there in person. 8k video capture and playback, studio-grade recording and playback of FLACs through the k340s without a lick of hiss or hum, a studio in yer pocket if ya will
I'm so glad Dank warns his little nuggets before hooking them into the death machine, it makes their sacrifice more humane
"We got some Cashie headphones!"

“Yup, one of 'em died!”
You are genuinely one of the few RUclipsrs that get me excited whenever a new video comes out. Keep up the great work!
8:20 I love how this is Fiio's "You haven't even seen my final form!" moment.
I'm only watching this through a budget television I have in my bedroom right now, but the difference between HD600s and the K340s was still *alarmingly* apparent. Like holy crap did the sound suddenly open up like I just pulled cotton wool out of my ears.
Dude same, I was watching out of my phone speakers at the breakfast table and I was blown away.
@@dominateeye Plus we've had like a hundred other DankPods videos to build up familiarity with the Huh-duhs. Hearing them's like speaking with a good friend.
Its just because the k340s have absurdly boosted treble. It may sound decent on that specific song but on others it will be earrape.
The DAC in this device is absolutely NOT why its so big. Its the amplifier, power supply, and IO.

I feel like my ears are flying first class, imagine actually getting to own this stuff.

I might be a bit late, but you don't really need to spend thousands on a good audiophile stuff. Dank also has a guide for budget ones. You can check it out. The higher you go to a point, the less difference you will hear.
dankman is such a charismatic salesman that one of these days he's gonna make me drop a cool $5k on the fancy equipment just to listen to my 320kps mp3s in ~style~
That would be obtuse. Drop the money for a dap and replace mp3s with FLAC at the very least or it will be pointless.

I legit thought he was gonna hook up the stax that would have blown my mind
That's sadly not possible, the staxs don't have a aux cord. It's weird

i was wanting to email you about this, because it just occured to me
you may not have that little ipod nano quarantine jar anymore, but if you do, you ought to put a hole somewhere on the jar, maybe on the top of the lid
because if those nanos explode, then it's gonna get real hot in there real fast, and when gases in airtight containers get hot, they expand, and an explosion makes this happen real fast
so if it explodes, the jar is now suddenly a vessel containing a huge amount of pressure, and since it's glass, it's probably going to shatter along with the ipods, therefore meaning it's not going to do much to contain the explosion
because it can't
so if you put a little vent hole in there, that pressure will have a place to go, so at least you're controlling where all that pressure is going
you should also use a metal container too, or at least borosilicate glass

The Energizer phone has point being that big; it has a 18000mAH battery.
