the fact the chord increased the volume by 100 times over the ipod (a step of 10 decibels is 10x louder than the previous step, so 20db is 10x louder than 10db) just shows how insane that thing is
This is most likely false in this case. There is a difference between the sound pressure level and the perceived volume which are both measured in db (it’s confusing, don’t ask me why it’s measured like this, everyone is confused by it). Most (free) apps show you the perceived volume measured in db where 20 db are a 10 fold increase. So in this case the volume would be 10 times as loud and not 100 times.
@@TheSpok66 perceived volume usually doubles every 10 decibels, although four times as loud as an ipod is pretty screaming loud!! I listened to an ipod on top whack on a loud song and I got hearing fatigue pretty quickly. Doubling that twice you're probably approaching ear tickling volume (120 dBA) if you have powerful earphones, which will definitely wear your ears out very quickly. Although the real purpose of this amp is driving inefficient headphones loud, rather than trying to set the SPL world record on IEM and Sensitive cans.
@@TheSpok66 It’s because the decibel is just a unit used to compare ratios of very big and very small numbers. The idea is that each additional 10 DECIbels (deci = 10) *always* corresponds to 10x of the quantity you are comparing. The confusion is in *what* you're comparing. The OG use case for decibels was to compare electric power in telegraph equipment: for anything to do with signal strength in audio chains, an extra 10 dB specifically means a 10:1 change of the the strength of the signal in the cable connected to the speaker/microphone. For decibels to make sense, always think electrical power. When we measure a +20 dB change, what this simply means is "the latter signal made 100x more power in the microphone wires". That's it. The confusion arises because 100 times more power in the microphone does not mean the air was moving 100x harder. In fact, to move air twice as hard, you need 2*2=4 times the power, and to move air 10 times as hard, you need 10*10=100 times more power. Therefore, a change of +20 dB corresponds to a power ratio of 100x (which is the definition of dB) between the electrical impulses in the wire, which was produced by an airwave 10x as strong. As it turns out, perceived loudness does not equal air pressure either. In fact, 10 times as much power (+10 dB) only produces *twice* the perceived loudness, and 100 times as much power (+20 dB) will give you 4 times the loudness. Therefore, the +20 dB difference in the app corresponds to, by definition, a 100x increase in power, which creates an approximately 10x increase in pressure waves emitting from the nugget, and a 4x change in perceived loudness. Given that the iPod has a 60 mW amplifier, the Chord was outputting 6W, which is about right considering the max rated output of the mojo is 5.3W RMS.

So, this was the video that made me buy the FiiO Btr5 and a pair of Grado's, and I quite literally can't believe that music could sound this good. Listening to classical music, even on RUclips, I noticed that string Instruments had this texture to them that I had never heard before. Highly recommend getting the Btr5. Impedance and sensitivity are not exactly the same. Lower impedance gets its volume by extracting more power out of the same amplifier (until it reaches the minimum the amp can safely handle without overheating). Whereas sensitivity measured on a milliwatt basis is about conversion of power to sound (some manufacturers use 1 volt RMS sensitivity where power varies with impedance) Those tinny sounding piezoelectric earphones in the "worst earbuds" video are actually pretty sensitive, but don't get that loud off a player because the impedance is about 2000 ohms, but their current draw is low and can work on crystal radios, they just need a high voltage low current source. Regular earphones need a transformer to work with a crystal radio to boost the current by lowering the voltage. My Sennheiser HD25 are pretty loud for 64 ohms, and louder than some 32 ohm cans and 46 ohm in ears I have, though I think the old 16 ohm sony buds are more efficient if in properly. My most efficient headphones are actually a pair of Olympus voice recorder earbuds I glued to a bent coat hanger to hold them in sideways. They are very uncomfortable by pushing on my ear canal and are really boomy in the mid bass and lower mids (can get them to sound good with EQ) but my golly do they get stinking loud off of just a laptop. I haven't tried them with an amp up loud as I don't think my ears would survive haha. Another note about impedance is that plugged into a stereo that uses a series resistor to the speaker amp, higher impedance headphones can actually be louder up to a certain point. This is because a higher impedance gets a larger voltage share with the series resistor, so for some value (actually equal to the series resistor), the headphones get maximum power. Also the frequency response can be different due to differing impedances receiving power in different proportion than when connected to an amp with negligible series resistance.
I picked up a dongle dac and samson sr850s as a starter on your recommendations and am floored. So much different than listening to low quality phone tunes through bluetooth earbuds. Thank you.

Grado SR-60s got me into fancy headphones and 'critical listening' off a 5th-gen iPod. I think I tore a cone on them early on, I remember them rattling like crazy, but they were still the most resolving and detailed cans I'd heard to that point. Always a good buy.
Maaan... It makes me sad that TOP's first two albums were mixed kinda shoddy, cuz I don't think I can get much more out of them with better equipment than ATH-M40x, but those are the albums I love enough to sit down in a room, and just listen.
After watching “Masters of the Air”, I kind of want a pair of Grados with the big foam cups. It would be a great match for my amateur radio too, since they’re kind of open back.
The whole reason I got into the iPod modding scene was for the wolfson dac. The iPod 5.5 gen is the best sounding apple device by far! For standard in ear or low ohm over ear headphones. The dac makes a huge difference. I love the wolfson dac, such a warm, rich and tight sound!

I was in the middle of writing a comment about how that fiio didn't have a usb c variant and he comes in clutch with the ibasso right as I was about to send it. Good man.
This actually has taught me so much about DACs and just audiophile equipment overall. It's actually shown me how much I didn't know about them. I always assumed they were just used to remove the electronic noise out of audio and I've always had the overall view of, "this equipment has come so far already that you would never notice an audio quality difference out of any headphone jack". But one thing stands out to me, how do wireless headphones work (audio quality-wise)? It doesn't have access to an external DAC of course. Are wireless headphones just throwup inducing for audiophiles? Do wireless headphones come with high-end built-in DACs? Someone fill me in pls.
Wireless headphones have built in dacs. Some dacs are good and some are ok, but you can at least be sure that the dac will be well matched to the drivers. Other thing to consider is that the codec used for bluetooth audio can impact audio quality. That comes down to the bluetooth support in the headphones and the compatibility with your phone.
Wireless headphones all have their own DAC and you get what you pay for. But as the people above have said it also depends on what codec the headphones support, but even then more money usually equals better codecs and thus better quality. My wireless headphones are slightly worse in quality when my wired ones, but this difference is entirely inaudible when outside. The convenience to not have a cable hanging off of my head while moving around is also well worth the slightly lower audio quality I'm able to notice in a perfectly silent room.
The $9 Apple 3.5mm lightning to headphone jack adapter is very underrated. Despite what some people believe this adapter does include a built-in DAC. Belkin also makes something similar but they are sold for around $39. Thank you!
I keep rewatching your headphone vids. You have ignited in me a fiery passion for audiophile gear which has also lead me to try new music that I never would have listened to before. Awesome stuff, man. Now, I must wait patiently for my 2 new sets of Grados to get here :D

Underrated 4 sure.
I picked up a dongle dac and samson sr850s as a starter on your recommendations and am floored. So much different than listening to low quality phone tunes through bluetooth earbuds. Thank you.
How much better is that adapter compared to the standard Apple one? I’m tempted to get it bc I use the apple adapter and SR850s as well

I wouldn't be surprised if someone already said this, but that Lightning to 3.5mm adapter at 7:10 actually has a DAC in it. Similar USB-C adapters contain DACs as well. There's no standard as far as I know to pass analog audio through either of these connectors, so an external DAC is necessary.
I love how enthusiastic your videos are. Makes me want to be more enthusiastic about my career instead of depressed that I can’t find work right now. Thanks for all the awesome content.

Bought the fiio when it first came out. I'm glad that it's finally getting the attention it deserves. I've kept it in my car, in the hot, cold, it is a fucking beast and still performs as such. hearing dankpods call my headphones good when i dropped a hundred dollars on them without knowing anything about audio puts a smile on my face
Depends on the wireless headphones and your personal preference. Cheap buds from a local Chapters? Garbage, probably. Galaxy Buds+? Hell yeah.

@@Canvas-nb I love them. They sound like nothing I’ve heard before. My favorites of them all are the Hemps. They’ve got the classic Grado sound with a bit extra low end to fill everything out nicely. Not sure if they’re still being sold, but if you can still buy them I recommend it highly.
