Wonderful..... great examples, I think a little harder to achieve with loud rock mixes 😊
would love to hear some actual audio examples instead of all this "visual mixing"! kind of hard to learn to mix when you can't hear the music and the changes that are being made...

There’s tons of videos on RUclips of what your looking for but here, irkos giving us a different perspective. All he’s saying is a mix has a limited amount of space and you need to be careful not to overcrowd certain areas in your mix.

Being a self taught engineer. I really appreciate this video. I’d love if you guys showed a way to mix with a beat already bounced and an artist adding vocals over the beat that’s already mixed. Everybody doesn’t record to stems and build a beat from ground up now a days. Thanks 💯

Great video! It would be great to see how to make space when the kick frequency is right at the bass fundamental, say, with a boomy kick + bass guitar with a sub bass layer under it(Dua Lipa-Don't Start Know type of song).
Does protools have that plug in so I can view the levels
Irko's ideas are always ear opening and his presentations are low key and humorous, a great way to understand the concepts. That being said, does anyone else find that the swirly back ground music degrades the presentation? I'm trying to listen to the words and imagine the concepts, but the swirly music is distracting. But thanks anyway for the lesson.
How would you deal with ill-defined amp or other sources... or guitars that sound murky, yet when you address that they sound weak?

It seems this is geared towards electronic music, which is interesting since Graham usually does rock related stuff. Would like to be able to hear what Irko is actually talking about and maybe apply this technique to acoustic instruments as well.
This video wasnt about a certain genre at all. No audio was even needed to be heard to get the point across. Irko was simply giving a visual representation of the limited space in a mix.
@@Payan8 Well when he's talking about 808 sub basses and ducking the bass when the kick hits and putting the kick around like 200hz, that's very clearly directed towards electronic music. Those are not moves you would make in a rock mix, and if you slot the instruments too much it can sound disjointed. I get the concept, It's just strange for a channel that's been mostly about rock music. And the fact that he doesn't show us what these moves actually sound like discredits the information. Without him showing us, how do we know he's not just bullshitting?
@@Just-Michael because he was talking about a concept. Not a set in stone way of doing things. His 808 and kick was purely an example. Your kick could be wherever. Just make sure it has space to live in the frequency spectrum.
Hi Irko, interesting topic, thx for making it visual. Unfortunately I really got distracted by the background music. Why is there background music anyway, talking about kick and bass? It would make sense if we can listen to these instead of the muzak in the background. But thx for you insights.
Oh, to have someone like Irko mix your songs.....
Its all well and good to have a baseline understanding of conflicting frequencies, but in the world of mixing, you dont have creative control over the sound choices. Prioritizing frequencies for certain elements is far more important than 'filling out' the holes in the spectrum- because often times this isn't possible when certain sounds just dont sit where they "need" to.
Reversing the polarity of bass or kick maybe another option the check out
I'd feel better if Graham did intros or outros for the videos he's not in, sort of like Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock.

I usually do rock genres, so it's strange for me to hear someone say "put the bass lower than the kick." And the kick at 200? Usually I've got the bass sitting at around 100 or just above, and the kick below that! Is hip hop/electronic music different in that way?
Not necessarily. It's basically a creative decision. I've done both across various genres.

Scary with all the concrete. Now we really know why Graham aint in the videos anymore...
This is super useful information, but it would be nice to actually hear the audio examples instead of just seeing the spectrum analyzer. It seems like you even stop speaking so we can hear them, but maybe the audio got left out in the editing process?

The same principles apply, you cut frequencies to make sure nothing clashes
To me is vice-versa, I want the Low End on my mixes as hard as I can, Marley Marl/MCShan show us the path! Only Real Hip-Hop headz can understand that! I'm Out

Yawn! This has been covered so many times before. Nothing earth shattering, and despite Juan's incessant love for this guy and his approach to teaching; audio examples would have been much better than hearing a backing track that had nothing to do with the "lesson" and stupid camel pictures.
The poorest 'tutorial' I've seen that only addresses bass and kick and says nothing new. To have annoying, different, distracting music going on instead of hearing the actual audio results, made this video a 'thumbs down', IMHO.

Again he wasn’t talking about a mixing technique. which is why in the beginning of the video he mentions we are quick to grab a plugin when we start mixing. You don’t have to listen to understand there’s limited space in the mix. If too much sounds are taking up the same frequency its going to sound unbalanced. Hope this helps you understand
