    I made myself some panel speakers as per "Tech Ingredients" channel. They're excellent, but they bottom out at 90 hz. So I decided to try building a panel subwoofer by putting a bass shaker on a 1" sheet of polystyrene. That doesn't work until you get to a fairly huge size, 4ft by 5ft. I suspend them from my ceiling and at first I had my sub too close to the back wall, about a foot, and it was cancelling the subs. When I moved my sub panel out to about 4ft away from the wall, magic happened. I now have a nearly perfect 20/20k flat response curve. In addition, suspending these panels cuts down on reflectance.
    An additional word about panel speakers is that, while traditional speaker cabinets only have tiny little tweeters, a panel speaker has its entire surface as a tweeter. This makes for excellent crispness and presence. The drawback is that, though they're flat, they do take up considerable space in your room.

    Hey Colt, Thanks for the Video. I never boost anything bellow the fundamental , I like to put my low cut at about 1 cycle bellow the fundamental of the instrument that I`m EQing so as an example if my Kick is at 60 I will start fishing around 30 and listen for the tonal boost that I get when I find that sweet spot were all the energy get in focus .

    This video convinced me to finally pull the trigger and order a sub. Seeing that my near fields only go down to 80hz and that I'm missing a lot of info when mixing.

  • @Kaotix_music
    @Kaotix_music Год назад +2

    Clicked because im a Sub :D But wanted to chime in on a big mistake I see mixing engineers, mastering engineers, producers make. They build a studio, get some decent speakers (or super expensive high end speakers), put in some room treatment (in the correct places too with the correct kind of room treatment) and maybe even invest in some room correction software. But they dont listen to music. They spend all this money and time building the studio to sound right....but then dont understand what they are listening too. I just moved into a new house in February and I was finally able to have a room dedicated to just my studio. I spent maybe 2 months building it out to make it sound perfect. But I knew everything was going to sound different than the last 3 studios I have lived in. So for an entire month I made zero music. I mixed/mastered zero tracks. I spent an entire month listening to music. Every single track I have in my DJ crate folder (the songs I tend to DJ at a club/festival that isnt any of my own tracks) And just listened. I listened to what was going on down in the low end, where the mid range was, how the high end was doing. I was listening to the depth of all the tracks. How far back or up front certain elements were. I needed to understand the room. I needed to develop a new relationship with my equipment in this new room and we needed to understand each other. Were now in September and not once have I took one of my productions to the car and went "UGH! THIS MIX IS TERRIBLE!!" It literally translated to my car exactly how it sounded in my studio note for note, frequency band by frequency band. And it was all because I sat in my room every day, maybe for about 2-3 hours a day just listening to the room, so that when it came time to do a mix down and even master the track, I knew what to listen for. I was able to know right away if something didnt sound right. People need to stop making music or mixing music for just a little bit - and get to know their room.

    • @robfriedrich2822

      I fixed the problem by listening with speakers, where the "low end" is in fact low mids and also with speakers, that has real low end and speakers, that can't transport low mids properly, so not getting unwanted surprises.
      About vocals, the sound becomes better, when I cut below 250 Hz, clear and believable.
      About bass instruments, we recognize the first harmonic frequency, that is between 60 and 80 Hz, so frequencies can roll off at 60 Hz, not too much, but roll off

  • @SOHCGT96
    @SOHCGT96 2 года назад

    I know your main focus is recording, but I can 100% say this exact same strategy set applies to live sound too. There is no sense sappping power from your subwoofers trying to reproduce frequencies you can't fill a room with, and if you want the low end hitting hard in the room, do everything he said here. Maybe even take it slightly higher depending on the dynamics of the room. In a big open area I've high passed kicks and bass guitar as high as 45hz before to clean them up and try and at least get a little punch with my slightly underpowered subs. Also for IEM mixes, which you have to have as absolutely clean and distinct as possible, notching things around each others fundamental ranges really helps. Its how I was able to get my bass to cut through a really dense mix of crunchy guitar and dense synths.

    Before watching, I would tell my experience.
    That, what is noticed as Bass on car stereo systems and smaller portable speakers is in fact low mids.
    Low mids is something, not easy to set. On the one hand, some smaller speakers responds to low mids with some kind of roar, on the other hand to turn down this let other speakers sound thin.

    Monitor placement and sitting position are huge, too. Also, it's important not to have the woofers equidistant from the floor and ceiling.
    I wanna try this ITB trick soon: ruclips.net/video/zrWA9rglG24/видео.html (gotta grab a Neve emulation first)

    No talk about phase relations for layering low end? I guess good mix engineers keep these techniques a secret?

      @@ColtCapperrune yeah but for instance you don't talk about things like slight time shifting of the competing wave forms to make phase correlation better etc. EQ isn't the only thing to help phase correlation.
