If you want a wide mix, it’s not about using stereo tracks or widening plugins…
It’s about using your panning knobs correctly in your mixes.
In this week’s video, Multi-Platinum mixer IRKO reveals just how he creates wide mixes for his clients.
You’ll discover some sneaky automation tricks you can use for width in your mixes, an easy hack to start getting more stereo separation when mixing, and much more.

I'm a plug in nooowwwww. LOL the best.
I really like Irko. I think he's the only dude that can pull off a bow tie and make it cool.
Bow ties are cool. So says the Doctor.
No... my old boss was wearing bow ties 30 years ago and set the bar pretty high... definitely a bow tie zen-master ;-)
Great tips, but man the audio examples would be the finishing touch on these videos.
Cheap shot with Irko panning to the huge HGTV/audio nerdy/bowtie-wearing demographic, those dudes are everywhere!!!! Great tips here & keep studio vids coming!
I like your visual approach to teaching audio. Seeing what's happening and why it's happening is way more useful to me, if I need to hear anything, I will hear it when I use my DAW to duplicate what you have demonstrated. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Love Irko, really well presented and I don't even mind not hearing the audio. This is showing you a set of tools to try something different and working out your own mixes is the best way to get a feel for something.
This is art!!! IRKO is brilliant!!!
a terrific, educational and fun video - many thanks Irko!
Irko is one of my favorites!
Best mixing video I’ve ever seen
Yay irko bro this gives my track a huge feel even with minimal instruments, the movement in the stereo field 🤌🏽
Merci de partager les conseils d'Irko. Ils sont toujours intéressants.
Bien à vous.*
One of the best instruction on a great mix! Thank you!!!
I'd really like to be able to hear your playback in these videos.
Thanks Irko, This was so accurate and very helpful! Grazie!!
Thanks! Great and fun presentation as always.
I love that you don't play the tracks when you demonstrate, it's nice to actually just SEE it being worked.
Nice! V helpful tip for contrasting sections
Thanks for your free knowledge sir!
My Boi Irko!!! So Dope!!!!
I love Irkos vibe, he's such a posi bobbin. It would be good if these videos had audio examples so we could hear how it's supposed to sound.
Good tips either way, I've seen huge improvement in my mixes from practicing simple techniques like this before moving to plugins.
RecRev has lots of their own music they could demo with, they have done so in the past. no excuse for not doing so here.
My mixes now have gone from sounding like Urkel to Irko. My man...
Great stuff. Thanks!
I'm your very recent subscriber. I loved your mic comparisons and I'm going for a Shure SM57. I would love to purchase a condenser mic as well sometime in the future. I tried searching for mic stand comparisons. I couldn't find one on your channel. It would be great if you come up with one of those videos. Just a suggestion/ request. Cheers, and keep going!
Good examples, but expected to hear the audio of the examples shown for better understanding.
Man when I checks things in mono it’s disappointing but In the video he said he wouldn’t make drastic changes. Sometimes I’m not sure what to do to keep mono compatibility solid. I know it’s not possible for it not to change when you hit mono but I guess I’ll do my best and not feel too discouraged about it. Sometimes narrowing the width of the tracks helps but then I loose that stereo feel. Arggggg lol
Guys, most of these songs are released and RUclips wild portably strike then of demonetize the video of the sounds on. It’s just a panning video, no need to listen, go put in practice in your sessions
RecRev has lots of their own music they could demo with, they have done so in the past.
I like the way he talks about mixing, but he doesn't play examples which is pretty limiting. I get that there might be licensing issues that prohibit him playing the audio he's talking about, but since what he's discussing is pretty general I think he could do demonstrations easily enough with royalty-free loops
Great panning ideas, albeit a little scary when you have to check in mono and instruments are disappearing all over the shop.
But definitely food for thought.
Great stuff. Just wondering... do you guys tend to try and duplicate these kinds of details when the same track is being played live. Or is it a different approach altogether for live.
We all know every concert venue uses HiDef Stereo sound systems ! lol
Good stuff
IRKO!!!!!
It would be slightly better if you played a raw demo so we could hear audio example of your placements changes. :))
Other than that...cool...thanks. :))
:( why not playing the audio examples? really mean
So should I switch my VSTs to mono before I pan them??
Seems to depend on the VST; instrument, effect, sample, etc.
You share a lot of knowledge here but without sound djeez dude...
RecRev has lots of their own music they could demo with, they have done so in the past. This is ridiculous
Maybe they know most of us aren't listening to YT with studio headphones on. lol
Top 10 Mixing Tricks BIG MONO Doesn't Want You To Know
lol
Really appriciate these videos but they look kinda creepy with that dark background 😅😂
One soundexample says more than 1000 words. When you explained the first mix I excitedly ran to get my headphones only to see that it is all about mixing with your eyes not with your ears. No sound no fun.
I think you need to let us listen how it sounds.. Otherwise how can we know if it improves the things or makes it worse?
Can you post another video with the actual sound?
Music production tutorials without showing examples is so pointless
In real life, without headphones, the 'stereo effect' is lost and sometimes detrimental.
Pretty big sweeping statement. It entirely depends on the listening environment. Stereo is well maintained in most car systems. Well maintain in dedicated stereo home systems. Well maintained in earbuds and headphones. Well maintained on TV and media systems. Well maintained in cinema rooms. Well maintained in any home studio. I agree that it’s lost in a lot of live gig situations where the engineer chooses to run mono. And it’s lost on a lot of crappy single speaker devices like Alexa, google home etc etc. But if you’re serious about music, most people have at least one environment where the stereo field is well replicated.
@@pete3816 You just keep telling yourself that. roflmao
@@pete3816 BTW I already said "except headphones", Guess you are blind as well as deaf.
@@DBCisco I’m happy to be corrected. Feel free to impart your knowledge on the matter. I’m very willing to learn otherwise, provided what you say is convincing.
@@DBCisco “blind as well as deaf”. Wow. So mature. Don’t worry about getting back to me. I’ve already realised I have nothing to learn from you.
Mix with ears not eyes! Yeah right... Great stuff but c'mon... We talk about MUSIC and SOUND not GRAPHICS, PICTURES, etc.
Talking bout stereo field, with zero sound examples... might as well read a book.
3:50 looks like a clown face
Should change this video name to "guess what happens" since we could only see what you've done, not hear... 👎
