The Power Rangers were based upon the Super Sentai Japanese tv series of the early 70's and Voltron was produced in the early 80's so if anything Voltron copied the Super Sentai.
Love this review for being so honest and open to receive the strongest and weakest of it. You clearly articulate the exact impression it had on you even when that impression didn't allow you to look back and know what move you could have done differently to improve your odds of winning.
I wonder why they decided to make this a pvp game instead of a co-op game. I mean how often do the power rangers defeat the big bad guy by themselfs? I thought the show was about co-operating against big threats. I think Power Rangers would work better with a modified Legendary system. But that's just my opinion.
I was a in middle school when power rangers started over here, so i watched maybe the first season and i think i saw the first movie. So i have the base knowledge for this as far as nostalgia goes. But as someone who owns this game i can say that it does have a lot going on, it is a little complex, but man i love it. It's a different kind of deck builder with things i've never seen before. I just really enjoy it. Always play 1v1 btw. Always.
I almost exclusively play 2v2 and I think it's a better game. They potential for synergy between partners' decks, as well as the discount for buying Zords/Masters when your partner controls theirs, can really make the game interesting and fun (you're more likely to get out more Masters/Zords).
I love dc deck building game. Sure it’s not the strongest themed, but I like the simplicity of it. Kinda wished the had used the same system as this. Really want a godzilla, transformers and gundam deck building game using the Cerberus system.
@@saiyanroyalty229 😂 That's Rita's plan! She's destroying the housing market for Angel Grove so she can move in with a favorable mortgage. I imagine the cost of living on the moon is pretty astronomical.
though power rangers was in the 90's its a re cut of a japanesse show called Super Sentai which started in 1975 pre dating both voltron and Beast King GoLion the japanes show that was used to make voltron. I dont thing even Super Sentai made the idea but they did do it first. i guess it would be like next generation and thinking its a star wars knock off.
@@tmon6219 but it didn’t come to the States until the 90’s. There’s a ton of IPs from outside of the US that never caught on here. Super Sentai is one of them. As direct copy of it as it is, so little of the actual target audience for the regular Power Rangers show even knows about them. I caught the show a little in high school and enjoyed the movie then and then one a few years ago, but I’ve never seen the original SS show. It is my understanding that the PR character story arcs are original to the US but the combat footage is directly reused from it’s overseas predecessor.
I am the target audience for this game. I love Power Rangers and deck building game, but this one is very clunky. There are some strange caveats that make me scratch my head, like if you are the villain you have to either buy your Signature Item or your Master form to flip your character card. My first game was over 1.5 hrs because my opponent was able to build a big defense wall, but he couldn't do much damage. I had low health and could attack, but I couldn't do a ton of damage because I had to keep back energy for blocks. I want to like this game, but it is a tight rope walk that doesn't know how to make things balanced, fun, or fast like the other dueling deck building games.
I LOVE power rangers (all in on Heroes of the Grid) and I'm lukewarm about this game. Playing a Ranger is more fun than a villian but it doesn't really feel like there are meaningful choices to make.
I've found the opposite; that every choice is meaningful in the game, but it's being able to process which of all the good options is the best for you at that point in the game.
At the very least, seems the designer listened to your complaints about the Cerberus system being not thematic enough. Game looks pretty thematic this time ! Btw I think renegade announced a transformers deck building game, willing to bet it's going to use the same system.
Transformers (and G.I. Joe) Deck-builers from Renegade will use different game mechanics / engines, designed specifically for those IPs. The rulebooks for both games are on Renegade's site, if you want to take a look at the mechanics.
@@ralphydeath I haven't played Power Rangers or Transformers, but G.I. Joe is pretty good. And fully co-op. I'm sure you've seen it by now, but Tom did a review on it and it was much better received. Reviews online have praised G.I. Joe (although the rulebook isn't that good). Reviews for the other two aren't as positive.
I think this is one of those games where you know if you would like it before you see it. If you like Power Rangers, then play this game. If you would rather play something else, then you probably won't miss anything.
This game has all the nostalgia for me but I didn't love it. Too many things going on for a game that's truly not that deep. Also a bit long for my taste with this sort of game. Agree with Tom's more rules than choices.
I actually would have preferred screenshots over art here - only because the artists apparently can't draw characters that look like actual people. The rangers themselves look nothing like the actors that played them. Meh.
Not sure if it's the case here, but sometimes licencing contracts state that the likenesses can't be too close to the actors due to their contracts, for some reason. I know this was the case with the Real Ghostbusters cartoon and comics.
No. Destroy is the term for "remove from this game". It's not putting it in a discard pile, it's putting it off to the side so it's out of play for the rest of the game.
I value Tom and his opinion and reviews, but I think he missed a lot of the strategy that can go on in this game. I also think he's overemphasizing the complexity related to the different card types. Once you've played it, it's really clear where the card types go - they are color coordinated. I've played this game a lot and I often find those combos and strategic moments, including when to leave the heroes in the Grid and when to buy them.

It would be awesome in the legendary system

Kind of reminds me of the power rangers board game. Once it's flowing it's cool but it has lots of set up and lots of odd rules to keep track of.

Unfortunately it is about about what I thought it would be when I saw the designer.
Hopefully this isn't a bad omen for the upcoming GI Joe and Transformers deck building games coming up after this one.

I'm a Power Rangers fan and a deckbuilding fan. I think this game is terrible. I would much rather had a full co-op deck builder.
I feel like you can almost make a generic deck-building overview and just change the footage at this point.
For this game to be true to its source material, each game should play exactly the same.

The length is terrible and the blocking mechanic can’t make games just drag
I'm not a fan of this one like the other deck building games like the DC games.
As far as power rangers games go, Heroes of the Grid is the only way to play in my opinion. This one is a little weak.

I doubt they had access to the actual footage to create such screencaps. Probably a different set of licensing required.
