Part of me likes that this is so variable, which is great for replay. At the same time, part of me likes the other Clank games because it actually let me plan my route and plan ahead. This led to really zippy turns. I think with Catacombs, you'll have to think a bit more on the fly. Still looks good though, great review!
I feel like having no planned route does ruin some of the strategy in the game. But it's already not the type of game where the best player wins. So not sure, probably need to play it myself to see if the exploration is worth more extra time and less long-term planning.
You could just layout tiles before the game begins and bam! You can plan your routes on the days you are feeling analytical, and on the spontaneous adventurous days, play the game tile by tile

Helpful tip. Do not dilute the Catacombs deck with your other cards if you have prior Clank. There are 16 cards that are very catacombs specific and the 100 card deck is 20 monsters, 9 devices, 7 gems, 23 companions and 41 other cards. Because of lock picks and manipulating the dungeon I would not dilute more than the 100 cards. 8 monsters, 1 device, 3 gems, and 4 companions are catacombs needed. So if you keep those you can mess with the other 84 from other sets. I have all the expansions and I leave out the cards that even mention curses or flooded caverns. The opposite is true of you play base clank or an expansion. Remove the 16 Catacomb cards The Catacombs is the better game. FYI if you have prior clank sets you will need to sleeve the cards as the coloring is different on the backs. New one is a reddish brown old cards a yellow brown
I got into the hobby 2-3 years ago, and the original Clank has been on my must-get list the entire time, but I somehow have still never played any Clank (turns out there are A LOT of great games out there). The idea behind this one that the dungeon plays out differently every time, and you really are exploring a map where you don't know what's coming next sounds like it all but makes the original obsolete. Depends what you're looking for, of course; the idea of knowing ahead of time the optimal strategic route doesn't appeal to me at all, but for others, that might be the whole reason to play. I've got this pre-ordered at my FLGS.
There was never an optimal route with the original due to the random card market. The random tiles will probably make this version a little more luck based. Although, the portals probably help to reduce that.
im new to clank and am very interested in this but ugh why couldn't they add some flare to the paths to make it look like hallways or paths, not just lines so much missed immersion, would be an instant buy otherwise

Man, I was excited about this, but I don't like that the artwork in the tiles is pretty much non-existent. To me, having some sense of immersion is important, and I feel Catacombs loses that. Also, it feels more random, as somebody else already said. Unfortunately, this is a pass to me.
Agreed. I think this game works best for people who have played one of the original Clanks a lot so they understand the change the best and can contrast it with their previous experiences; for newcomers the static board with lovely art might still have a much stronger aesthetic draw.
Yes! For the original Clank there are like, what, 8 maps? So repeatability is huge. So no need for a modular board. And those maps are so much more pretty than this game. This is more mechanics with no athetics. Big pass
This feels like it has a LOT more luck in it. Also, I use clank for when I feel like the few extra rules would be too many for a newer gamer. I would be concerned with all the extra rules here, this probably a little more complex than clank in space.
I played with some new people. It’s not to much. To me the tiles coming out is like betrayal at house on the hill. You draw one and orient it how you want. Simple. You play every card in your hand and get everything it shows. Buy power, movements and attack. People grasp all that pretty easily. You can just teach the tiles individually as they come out.
Yeah the tiles are really no big deal to deal with. The artifacts tend to spread out, and all players can usually discover a pretty similar amount of stuff to each other. What it does help with is players who have played 2000 times and know what route they will take.. it gets rid of that meta gaming stuff, which sucks for new players. It is no more complex than clank in space. All the stuff you draw, you just look up on a cheat sheet. You don’t even have to know what anything does until you come upon it
I'll give it a try if I get a chance but I have serious doubts. Same kind of cards in the deck and no option to plan with these 'tsuro' tiles. Looks very random. After Clank in Space and acquisitions incorporated I see no need for this game. And withoud these in my collection would rather buy the legacy one.
Well it also makes it more of a real dungeon crawl. You pick a path and don’t know what’s gonna be there. Plus you have the choice on how to orient it to benefit you the most. Plus there’s a ton of transportation points tk be able to move around the map. Plus if you really wanted to, you could just make a custom board out of the tiles ahead of time and not worry about drawing more. Etc.
The starting hands are identical with the first Clank. But how about the other cards? Are they all new or is there some/many cards re-used from other Clanks? I have only the first Clank. It's really good but it would be nice to have new cards and that tile map might be good too.
I love clank in space, but for how long the game is, it has lots of layers of randomness. And I enjoy luck, but clank pushes it really far. I’m not sure I want the board itself to be yet another layer of randomness. Not an instant buy for me.
And sadly the means of randomness mitigation that the designer & developers tout the most, are themselves limited by the very randomness they're supposed to mitigate
I always wondered why this game wasn't made this way in the first place. But now that I have most of the stuff for the original version, there's no way in hell they're going to get me to spend hundreds more dollars on a new edition. I'll just continue enjoying what I've already got.
With so much being the same as original Clank, I wonder why they don't also offer this as an expansion kit for the original. It seems like a money grab to sell this as a full base game to owners of the original again.
I would like to see the decks of cards first. I found that the deck of cards from Clank Legacy is more varied than classic clank. If this the case for this new game, I might buy it.
I've played Clank Legacy and it's absolutely worth it. It's SO much fun. Even though Clank Catacombs seems amazing, I don't think it will come close to Clank Legacy.

Component quality of the tiles and tokens is quite poor. Very thin and flimsy especially for the price tag , I believe this should have been mentioned in the review. Fun game tho' 😁
I find Clank! In Space is sooo much better than regular Clank!. Original Clank suffers from letting people be able to just go and get an artifact and leave fast which I find super lame. Space clank fixes that and adds a lot more interesting things/mechanics. Every time I've played regular Clank I'm just left feeling like it was a kids game. Not very fulfilling, Hoping this version is better as I like the idea of fantasy Clank but the original game is just too simple.
How does this compare with Clank! Legacy? I had Clank! in Space (bought it because I heard it has better gameplay than Clank!) but didn't really enjoy the theme that much I sold it.
Every time a new game comes out Tom says the new game is a killer. This is cool but there are tons of other maps for the base game that changes the boards around. This to me is a lateral move from clank.
I own original clank and all expansions. To me this seems like their way at a 2nd Ed . While I applaud 👏🏻 because it does feel like I totally got cheated . Like most 2nd Ed . Games .
Some people like strategy more than tactics, others prefer tactics. I like both, but prefer tactics, so this type of gameplay would be my preference. Just depends on the person.
Exploration is about the unknown. Clank is about exploration. This is a better Clank. Of course, many will have bias to justify NOT purchasing, happens all the time. In this case I don’t think someone needs all the Clanks. But as someone new this series this looks like the way to go.
@@robertbouley7697 no clank is a race. Races aren't fun if no one knows where they are going. Name a non co-op exploration game that's rated above a 7.
@@grog3514 Clank is absolutely not supposed to be a race. That doesn’t even fit with its title nor the sense of apprehension for making noise and awakening danger. You CAN play the earlier versions as a race; which demonstrates why this game is better. Why are you talking about arbitrary scores for non-coop?
My biggest worry that even with the tiered Artifact approach the game would become too luck-based. Admittedly the game was always a bit beer & pretzels, with random Dungeon card draw often having a huge impact on the game, but in this one it's now luck squared. Also.. I think it looks a bit too abstract and ugly. Clank! boards always felt a bit "busy", especially to non-gamers, but the extra art made the entire experience a bit more tame. This one just looks like an abstract mess.
The shop is random, your deck is random, the dragon attacks are random. Now you want the map to be random too? Clank: roll a dice and see what happens game
I remember everyone raving about clank, buying it and ever my casual gamer wife finding it overly simple. We returned it. Have the other versions have more interesting cards / choices?
Sure there’s expansions and clank in space expansions that add more interesting decisions. But, you might be fooling yourself if you think your wife is both a casual gamer AND finds clank overly simple. I guess that depends on the definition of casual gamer.

The endless shuffling of small decks is also annoying. The only deckbuilders that have any appeal to me are those where the deckbuilding is done before you start the game (giving you a deck that you actually wanted to play). The repetitive similar beginnings of all of these is like forcing someone to watch foreign language soap operas for hours when they wanted to watch something else and slowly adding content they desired.

With tons of stuff for Clank, and with Clank Legacy, all in one box... I really don't see the point of this one. I'll pass.
Gosh dangit… I just bought Clank
Wow! High score.
Every time a new game comes out Tom says the new game is a killer. This is cool but there are tons of other maps for the base game that changes the boards around. This to me is a lateral move from clank.
This looks like what should've been introduced with Clank Legacy. But, maybe they were too worried to deviate from the Clank formula with that one.
£53.98 for pre-order....nah!
Seems like all the older cards should beable to work on this.
lol this video feels Soooooooooooooooo sponsored :P
Don't Llama Clank
ehm, I mean Don't! Llama! Clank!
I own original clank and all expansions. To me this seems like their way at a 2nd Ed . While I applaud 👏🏻 because it does feel like I totally got cheated . Like most 2nd Ed . Games .
Seems like if they took clank legacy and betrayal and they had a baby
But... where is space???!
But part of the fun of clank is being able to strategize your cards to a path you map out. This eliminates all of that. I don't get it.
Yet somehow the endings are always tight
Would've been better though with a much less cloggy market than Ascension-clone
I disappointed that they use the same artwork on some of the cards.
Same here.
I bet the game you would enjoy is Clank! In Space of The Hunger
Clank! In Space is what you want, then
Well if Clank is simple enough for you, how about Dune: Imperium, Arnak, Copycat, Paleoamericans, or Dominion?
@@revimfadli4666 we enjoyed dominion long ago. Loved arnak. Havent had her try dune yet...i enjoyed it.
15 seconds of animated intro, ooof. It's fun and gorgeous, but I'm not sure it was a good idea to make it this long.
Several of the old intros were longer and arguably less engaging. Why not just skip ahead if you don't want to watch it every time?
I'm pretty sure most of his videos have always started at 20 secs, because for as long as I can remember, I've started by skipping twice and it goes right to his greeting.
I quite liked it. 15 secs isn’t too bad IMO
@@olivigarden I sure will skip it, but my opinion is that at 5 or 10 seconds, I would watch it most of the time.
LOL I didn’t even realized there was animation because I always fast forward! But the animation is cute.
PURPLE and BLUE are the colors they picked?????? Seriously? Those are TERRIBLE colorblind colors to pick. Red is by far the most common color blind issue, and as any preschooler knows, purple is just a reddish blue.
Roy looks so out of place in Tom's 90's studio. Great review though!
Thanks for the review but I'll pass. Deckbuilder's have zero appeal to me.
Why? What do you find unappealing in them? Which one do you dislike the most?
@@revimfadli4666 Most deckbuilding board games start all players out with the same hand of unappealing, garbage cards that each player has to try to slowly eliminate over the course of the game.
