    "I wish they made one that looked like a game gear" So I'm not the only one who wants that!
    Some poeple have made custom game gear style cases that fit more buttons, rechargable battery and an RPi3. (though thats a power drainer)
    Also note that retropie has combo keys setup in retroarch for save states and retroarch menu. Select + L for state load, + r for record, + X for menu and + B for reset. Select + left or right also changes the save state. So a shame you tell everyone there's no way to do it.

  • @Trimint123

    About the HDMI, you can just cut the hole on the cartridge slot to expose it, though there is a risk for breaking the plastic.

  • @alphaLONE
    @alphaLONE 5 лет назад +7

    A RPi Compute Module version would keep the upgradable feature of the case and let you put beefier components in, but it'd cost more and have a lower battery life. With an analogue stick, it'd be perfect for n64 or psx emulation.

    • @izaicslinux6961
      @izaicslinux6961 5 лет назад +1

      That's what i was just thinking. It'd be awesome for them to come out with a RPI compute stick cartridge... and more modules such as a lipo battery pack to put into the 3 AA slot, and maybe even a original gameboy cartridge compat adapter (would require some hackery in the emulators)? .... Think of all the cartridges and mods that came with the original gameboy, some of which were extremely primitive for today's standards but did some cool things.

    • @thepenultimateninja5797

    I'd have wished they modified their pcb to accept the raspberry pi 3 compute module instead of the raspberry pi zero, it'd be way more powerful that way, or make it full size and let us stick a full raspberry pi 3 in there, also, rechargeable battery please?

    • @ItDaBiz
      @ItDaBiz 5 лет назад +1

      Bit pointless making it more powerful when the input is limited to consoles old enough for the Zero. As for rechargeable batteries, go buy some? You can get a pair of rechargeable 750mah AA batteries for a dollar these days.

    • @LovelyAlanna
      @LovelyAlanna 5 лет назад +2

      @@ItDaBiz uhhh how about no?, Rerez didn't say it, but the raspberry pi zero doesn't have enough power to properly run super nintendo and game boy advance games, and it has enough buttons for both systems, if you add a speaker to the zero it gives some problems like lost frames and that hissing sound he talked about, with the compute module you wouldn't have those issues, ALSO, AA batteries just super suck, you have to take them out, use them for only 4 hours and then buy more, or with your "clever" suggestion buy a battery charger, buy not 3, but 6 to have spares while the others charge (where I live they don't cost 1 dollar, they cost 5 dollars each), it's a beautiful device, with a lot of wasted potential because of nonsense like this

    • @ItDaBiz
      @ItDaBiz 5 лет назад +1

      @@LovelyAlanna Someone that doesn't know how to get high capacity rechargeable AA batteries without getting ripped off has no authority to judge what a Pi Zero is and isn't capable of. @LovelyAlanna 5 лет назад +3

      Laughing Man it’s not a matter of getting ripped off you know... not everybody lives in the states, also, I’d rather have accuracy when playing, the other cores usually aren’t as good, and the hissing sound is not gonna go away no matter what you do, that’s just something that happens with the zero, but anyway, believe whatever you please, I ain’t changing my opinion, that thing should be compatible with the compute module and have a rechargeable battery

But if you find an optimal image and emulators, plus can set up a pi well, the gpi overall is the best. Runs psx and snes perfectly too, again, if optimized.

    Rerez, please pin this if you agree with it! There's an easy solution for the AA batteries, though I don't know how easy it is to find nowadays. There's a different type of AA battery I discovered a few years ago, ones that are literally USB powered. If you use these, you won't have to use that power cord which could fall out, or tons of regular AA batteries that cost a lot of money, or regular rechargeable batteries that take hours to fill up at a time.
    These USB batteries look like regular AA batteries, except that on the pointy end, there's a plastic cap you can remove to reveal a USB stick. Plug this into any USB port, and in less than an hour (with optimal current), the battery will be fully charged. Have a laptop with three USB ports? Plug in all your batteries at once when they're dead, and in an hour or less, they'll be ready to go again.
    These USB batteries do NOT have as much capacity as regular or normally rechargeable batteries, so they say, but I've managed to get a lot of time out of mine. If this system can run approximately 3-4 batteries under Rerez's test playing conditions, then these USB batteries can hold perhaps 2-3 hours under those same conditions.

      @@jesseling6672 I dont think you understand that snes is a nice feature to have. You are missing two additional button layout for it.
      I would expect it to play nothing but gameboy titles due to its functions. Like having some original GB, GBC and maybe GBA. Keep it retro to have and have a nostalgic feel to it. Yea, it can run those console emulators, but having the mimic gb in your hand and playing the GB is something else worth to have.

      @@Slacking02 It's not the exact same thing because the RetroStone has a slightly customized board, but the RetroStone has all 4 USB slots on the top as well as the HDMI port accessible, which allows for it to be a portable console AND a home console that you can even plug multiple controllers into to play multiplayer. So what I'm saying is they could've modified the design a bit to make room for it. And having the option of using HDMI doesn't make it not portable, it just gives you options.

    • @Slacking02
      @Slacking02 5 лет назад +2

      @@Arcad3n I see your point, but me personally id rather sacrifice the ports for the ascetics, besides this only runs a pi zero. I backed a freeplay zero on kickstarter and that design has the all the pi’s ports available in the cart slot, I modified a cart to cover them up to make it look more like a stock GBA.

    Huh, has a lot of good ideas and this is the easiest way to make a pi portable. I wish they would have had it run on an even number of batteries as most chargers only charge in groups of two.
    Also, I know it is for an anniversary but I really hope their next case is a Gamegear/GBA advance. The shoulder buttons will be a lot better to use in these configurations. I'm sure they will have another portable case as they have released a NES, SNES, and a Genesis case, this will get an update and I'll wait for a landscape system over a portrait system.
