ANCIENT ARMENIA | Pagan Temple of Garni + Geghard Monastery

- Armenia is one of the oldest civilizations in the world and it is home to a wealth of history like the last standing Pagan temple on the ground of the former Soviet Union called Temple of Garni. Also in close vicinity is the stunning Geghard Monastery which was built in the 4th century and carved literally out of the mountainside. If you are traveling to Armenia, you cannot miss these incredible historical sites. You can easily visit both in a day trip from Yerevan or stay overnight in the town of Garni. I hope you guys enjoy this video and a big thank you to my friend Gagik for being my local guide for the day!

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads): safetywing.com?referenceID=alinamcleod&Ambassador
I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.

Hello from Bulgaria 🇧🇬 to our Armenian brothers !
This world is so Beautiful!!!
Wow this looks so interesting! Underrated country
Previous to your visit I did not know how ancient the Armenian culture was....super interesting and I'm looking forward to learning more about Armenian history on my own. Спасибо за видео 🙋♂️.
Super interesting II didn't know Armenia was so old! And the mountains- a dream!
Armenia is one of the most ancient countries/civilizations in the whole world.
Geghard Monastery is different from the Western Gothic design but the thing they share in common is the light which bathes them. When you step inside it, you have the feeling like you’re in the presence of God. This is the nearest thing to heaven we’ll experience in this mortal life. You never forget the impact the place has upon you when you depart just as you do when you enter its precincts. That does stand out about Armenia.
Armenia is beautiful country with beautiful people 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Fantastic Armenia Scenery
Looking at ancient Armenia through your beautiful blue eyes.. TQ.
thank you for keeping your comment section clean of bots with a certain agenda. Really appreciated
Wow! Never knew Armenia had structures like these, awesome!
This is really nothing . Armenia was three times bigger and used to have one of the most beautiful city in the world if not the most; that is the city of Ani now in Turkey ( called city of 1001 churches ) which was their old capital and was one of the biggest cities in the world.
Armenian architecture is what contributed to the development of Gothic and Romanesque structures. Ani cathedral is a perfect example. The reason why you don't hear about Armenia mentioned in archeology nor their history was because of the genocide of 1915, and ever since then everything about Armenia has been downplayed
Thanks for arranging a private tour guide through Ancient Armenia for all of us!!!
haha you're welcome, but he's just my friend not from a tour company.
@@AlinaMcleod Well, what a helpful friend to have! 😂
WOW ! Unbelievable that some of the temples still standing after years and years I enjoy the history behind the European countries much to learn.. enjoy your stay Alina in Armenia 🕊
Thank you!
Fantastic video, especially the editing. I had no idea that Armenia had such beautiful ancient temples and monasteries prior to watching this. Seeing large crowds is definitely a cherry on top. Big thanks to Gagik for his local insight!
Thanks Rahul! Misha edited this one and did an awesome job 🙂
As a fan of architecture, a trip to Armenia is looking better and better with every video!

Temple of Garni & Geghard Monastery are true jewels in Armenia, my fav places ❤
Hi Alina! Thanks for this wonderful well-crafted video capturing some of the jewels of ancient Armenia! Beautiful and captivating scenery augmented by well-informed content. The Temple of Garni is the only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded building in Armenia and the former Soviet Union! The Geghard Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is uniquely special and awesome!
It was also nice to meet your friend Gagik. Thanks Gagik, for helping to make a splendid video even better! I very much look forward to my next indulgences with fabulous Armenian cuisine! Alina, I’m excited about your forthcoming explorations of other amazing cultural-historical sites in Armenia!
Thank you! It is a very rich and varied country 🙂
Wow. Armenia is a hidden gem, a well-kept secret, especially for travelers.

God BLESS mother Armenia it will never be eliminated off the map! Great video by the way Alina. :)

Beautiful, thanks Alina.
Now Armenia will go on my list for sure, I knew almost nothing about Armenia before I just met some Armenian people here in London and in Russia and I thought they were very nice and that was about it and I still have this goal to visit every former Soviet countries and I still need to research more.
Absolutely! The locals have been absolutely wonderful here 🙂
love how you travel to places everyone knows about but never consider visiting. makes all these names on maps really come alive. thanks and now even more new adventure.
Happy to hear it!
Wow, amazing! Love those ancient structures.
Hi Alina 👋 - Happy 🇨🇦 Day & thanks for showing the beauty of 🇦🇲. I am awed by the monastery !
It is truly stunning
Alina, thank you for presenting my motherland so nicely and warmly.
So much common Christian experiences, Amen!#
Many years ago I saw the Atom Egoyan film "Calendar", and it made a big impression on me. I like his films anyway, but this film had the added bonus of beautiful shots of old Armenian churches (and a pagan temple 😊) set amongst wild and remote landscapes. And two months of the calendar are right here! This is what I was really hoping to see when I found out you were going to Armenia, and you've done a brilliant job. I still want to go and see it for myself though! You even included a free Russian lesson, I am completely spoiled today 😊
Barev Alina, superb to see more around Armenia with you´re eyes. It´s such an unkown and special, positive country with lot`s of nice people around. Good, well done work. Take care and stay safe, always.
Thank you! It is a fascinating country with so much to offer
This is a very impressive day trip. I didn't know much about Armenia other than it existed as an entity for a long time. The temple is something I never expected to be so well preserved. Geghard Monastery may have started as a hidden church but at some point go big or go home definitely took hold. It is simply spectacular and the aerial shots show the scope of the complex. This was a great taste of history and your meal looked восхитительный. Have a good one.
It's actually amazing just how many great day trips can be done right out of Yerevan. It isn't a huge country obviously, but so much can be seen within a 2hr radius of the capital :)
Incredibly beautiful Armenia 🇦🇲😍❤
Wow this was so interesting to watch!
So beautiful
Wonderful location 👍🏿👍🏿😍💞
This was awesome!!
я была Армении почти везде. Там люди, природа, кухня чудесное. Алиночка спасибо большое за показ. ❤️💙💛💯👍
Really cool place Alina!
Such an ancient history for Armenia.Cool, thanks Alina!#
How the hell did they get motivated to carve that temple ? Amazing !!!
Yeah I can’t even imagine how difficult that was!
You need to know the fascinating story behind it. 🌞
Great drone footage with awesome editing on this video!
thanks for sharing
Absolutely stunning. You keep adding places to my list, I hope I live long enough to see it all lol. Great job as always Alina.
Wow...Absolutely AMAZING video! Such a pleasure to watch!👌Great exposure to Armenian delicious cousine, people & ancient history. The pagan Greco-Roman temple and the Christian monastery were such lovely sites. The monastery was carved in the stone, just like Petra in Jordan, absolutely incredible. Shout-out to Gagik for being such a likeable person & a great tour guide. He reminds me of Gagik Melikyan, a famous Armenian professor from CSUN where I got my MS in Chemistry in 2010. CSUN still has the biggest Armenian student population in the USA. I graduated from professor Thomas Minehan's research group. Thank you Alina, your channel truly is a GREAT WATCH.
That's really cool. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Watching your videos give me an urge to travel again, but because of the pretty high rate of pandemic in my hometown, I can't. 😭
Hopefully travel will be open for everyone soon!
@@AlinaMcleod Hopefully so. Looking forward to explore places like you do. Stay safe & healthy out there, Alina!
Hello, Alina. When you were in Garni, you had to go down into the gorge and see the "Symphony of Stones" It is very beautiful. It's breathtaking. I don't know why Garik didn't tell you. If you are still in Armenia, I advise you to go further south and see Tatev, Noravank Monastery, Khendzoresk. You can watch reviews of these places on my channel.
true .. Symphony of Stones is a not to miss site!
Greetings from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦
просто супер! Алина профессионал
Спасибо :)
That was awesome! To visit and actually go inside of buildings that are this old has to be a once in a lifetime experience. The history you presented here covers a lot more than anyone can learn in a history book, I vaguely remember a little in High School history and you covered a lot of things many do not know about. Thanks, Alina!
Yes seeing it in person is definitely a whole other experience!
Hi Alina...good night in Indonesia...You Enjoy in Armenia...Amazing...Beautiful...Thanks,.💜⚘💞
Alina is back doing what she is best at: discovering hidden touristic jewels!
Oh, you're so beautiful inside and out. And you've become one of my favourite travel bloggers on RUclips. People like you are the flowers that add colors, fragrance and freshness in life. I'm from Artsakh. It's sad that it's difficult to visit our part, but rest assured that you already have one of your main supporters. Everything that you do makes indeed a difference in somebody's life. Thank you! Looking forward to your new videos.
Thank you so much 😊
Great video. I've been there and I've seen all those wonderful sites as a child something like 40 years ago :)) Thank You very much for bringing me back to Armenia.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Simply enchanting!! The sights of both, the pagan Temple and the Geghard Monastery are breathtaking. While architecturally spectacular, the monastery inspires intimacy, modesty and serenity. Just beautiful. But let me say I also enjoyed the more 'trivial' parts of the video, such as the street vendors, the food (looked so delicious!!) and the ride!! Big 'thumbs up' to the great guide, too! Loved the part when you switched to Russian over food :) Alina, your effort to show us the amazing historic and cultural heritage is considerable, but please when you can, don't forget to take a stroll around the local "rynok" and such! Just a suggestion :) THANK YOU for taking us with you!! :-*
Thank you :) Will definitely be visiting some rynoks in Armenia
Love the intro 😍
I forgot to mention before that the architecture is simply amazing! Thanks again for sharing!

Senin niye her videoya Türkiye ve ermeni bayraklari koyduğunu anlayamiyorum malesef. Bana ne,ne yapiyorsan yap. Ermenilerin azerbaycanlıları neler yaptığını unutmazsın inşaAllah.
Erməni sevgisinin çoxalmasi diləyi ilə!😂
Cheers, to all those who did the tedious carving in these mountains all those many years ago.
Great to see a video om Canada day Alina
Thanks Alex! Happy Canada Day
Nice! they didn't destroy that temple because it represented Rome in which the apostle Paul gave his testimony, thankyou Alina
The monastery looks like an amazing spot to visit. Those intricate carvings are unreal!

Good day Alina, also greetings for your turist guide, jeje.
Beutiful video. Take care .

I have an Armenian colleague and she is lovely, she always used to bring chocolate coated dried fruits and wine before Covid when we were working from the office
Thanks Alina. Looks like you're feeling better.
Thanks! I definitely am
Hi,great you take care of yourself!
Wow looks so nice!
Nice very beautiful 😍👌👌👍👍
Thank you for you Alina.
Nice and hope to go there next year.Enjoy your trip Alina .Take care & stay safe.
Keghard is otherworldly, you really feel a sense of holiness or God standing there. There are little crevices where they used to climb from one floor to the other. “Azat” means freedom, so it’s in Freedom Valley. Another unique place to go is Amberd. It literally means fort in the clouds. You will feel you have arrived only one step from heaven.
Good afternoon Alina
Gorgeous - just gorgeous. 😌
Good government support for cultural heritage#
Love to see more ancient architecture and beautiful culture. Thanks.
Wow reminds me a bit of Greece!
