Thank you for this Justin. I had a vocal injury for 10 years - a cyst on my vocal cords, that was difficult to spot/diagnose. Manifested in me losing my voice every other day, and it often hurting to speak. It was an incredibly isolating, upsetting chapter of my life. Especially as an aspiring actor. I think it's a great sub-topic to the autotune issue. Miley is one of those singers who might have lost range and clarity, but her voice has gained so much character and personality by now being more 'imperfect'. There's so much more humanity to the sound of a voice that isn't pristine.

I love when Justin sings the theme song fresh every day. You just never know what he’s gonna do or what will happen. Recorded just wouldn’t be the same.
Really good points. Miley learned to embrace the changes in her voice. She sadly did a lot of damage to her voice unknowingly, but she sounds just as effing amazing - she’s just deeper now. I like to call that the sexy voice.
I had polyps on my vocal chords as a child that went away in their own, but I had a super deep voice according to my mom. As a teen, I had asymptomatic GERD that burned a hole in my vocal chords. I sounded like a man for months and had to rest my speaking voice. I also had a sexy voice for around 10 months that very slowly healed with medication, dietary changes, and sleeping with an angled wedge so I wasn’t flat.
I always worry when I see singers who smoke, don’t rest their voice and body after a gig. I always wonder when it will catch up with them. Maybe Mylie’s experience will inspire Justin, and any of his fellow pro musicians who may be watching, to do as much as possible to take care of their vocal chords and bodies so we will enjoy their instrument for many more years to come.
Look how many brilliant singers have lost their iconic voices after facing medical issues and/or the effects aging. Caring for yourself gives you the best chances of not being one of those people who lose their identities. The same way a guitarist (or their tech lol) maintains their guitar with daily wipe down, using a protective case, occasionally swapping strings, and making repairs as needed, singers gotta do what it takes to maintain the voices they rely on for income . . . and we adore. It’s worth consulting with vocal doctors and therapists every now and then to learn about your specific voice, check for any minor damage before it gets worse, and above all, heeding their expert advice.
    Thanks Justin!
    ❤❤❤

Personally, I was addicted to drugs from 18 to 30 years old. Started a band in my late teens with a new friend, and we partied and made some of our best songs then. Literally sitting with one guitar each for 24 hours and writing and playing. It ofc went to heavier stuff. But I’m happy to say we are both clean today. Most people say to me: omg you f***ed up, you must regret that so much. But I tell them, absolutely not! It was the best time of my life. We made music, wrote songs. And I learned so much from that whole experience. I’m convinced I’m stronger and smarter today because of all that.

Everybody's voice change by the time, not only because the life style, but the effect to growing old.
But in my opinion the most of singers get better the way to sing in spite of the voice evolution, because you earn better style or better techniques. It's what in Spanish call "tablas", the translation to English is "board"...i honestly don't know the reasoning to use this expression.
In fact there are singers who keep doing great performances even thought they are older or have had a hard lifestyle.
Justin, i think that you must have a strong personality if you got to separate the rock star persona of the Justin Hawkins person in order to get a healthy lifestyle.

If no one explaind it to her, which is surprising to hear, means she was a natural singer without proper training.
Smoking, drinking, parties, lack of sleep, stress, allergy, lactose, too much coffee, red wine all of it affects vocal cords. Voice is an instrument like no other 💜

having reinkes edema was the hardest part I've gone thro vocally and mentally... mine came from over use, age and I had developed a hiatus hernia so the acid had free flow to my vocal cords... I (on the other side) did have the luxuary of being and ordinary unknown so I took time off, rearranged things in the music and gave myself time to heal.. yes the bank and bills suffered from it but all I kept thinking was "health first!"

This seemed to happen to all my favorite vocalists. Davey from AFI destroyed his voice and I believe has 3 surgeries but he's still out there in multiple bands giving it his all. He definitely sounds different but just the fact he's still able to sing is pretty awesome

I was in cover band during hair metal and had to sing up to 35 songs that were performed by other singers a night. When we had to do 2 consecutive nights, I could barely speak the day following the 2nd gig.
My diaphragm use at the time was not as good as it is today and that made it even worse.

I feel quite conflicted as I think I much prefer the tone of Miley's voice now. She really suits a rock style of singing, but of course she's put it through so much and as a result had surgery. But she's adapted her singing to her tone and I think it sounds fantastic.

Totally agree, she sounds kinda interesting with that damaged voice (at least when singing, not so much a fan of her talking voice). A while back stumbled upon a performance she did on the Howard Stern show and it was really, really good. The studio stuff sounds a bit too polished for my taste but Live it's great, really enjoyable. And she's an absolute badass performer.

On mayo, Cleveland clinic, and other medical sights it says Reinke’s Edema is always caused by smoking. So sadly the smoking is likely the major cause unless misdiagnosed

Miley is a LEGIT rock singer. I wish she would just embrace the reason why she sounds the way she does. It's to sing the type of stuff she should sing. If you've heard any of her less poppy stuff that she's sung then you know what I'm talking about. The woman CAN SING and she's naturally very rock and roll.

Singing frequently isn’t easy, even if you’re trained to sing properly. I briefly played in a band as a vocalist & a guitarist. I was singing with a choir, my band, in the car and by myself to practice. I remember going into the recording studio after a gig. I was singing way too much & it was tough on my voice. I definitely needed a break. I imagine touring nonstop being terrible for you, especially if you’re smoking, not sleeping enough and partying all of the time.

Think a pre-recorded JHRA theme song with perhaps a subtle layering of acoustic guitars could be a tonic for this channel. Miley Cyrus apparently used to smoke tobacco and marijuana heavily, which may be a factor in her Reinke's edema. Appears to have lost an octave or so after surgery.

I agree that Miley has a great tone to her voice now. And a heaviness and tone that is deeper and separate from that of her father. Even though he does good covers of Billy Idol when he wants to, her voice actually has more bottom end and it would be cool to hear her cover "White Wedding."
