It was Roger’s brother who was the actual “Magic Man” she was singing about. He was their manager, and her relationship with him is how Ann & Nancy ended up joining the newly forming band Heart after the dissolution of the band White Heart.
I can't argue with it. Especially since, in High School in Northern Virginia, a friend with a radio ran up to me in the hallway and said "Joe! DC 101 just mentioned that you sent in a vote for Ann Wilson for Best Female Vocalist in their "Who's the Greatest?" Survey!" Still proud of that vote!

This is a great example why I think Airplay Beats is the preeminent music reaction channel now. Most other reaction channels have to react to a music video, I suppose because they think RUclips being a visual medium, they have to put a video up. But these guys are reacting to the original music. And a lot of reactors chose a music video to react to Heart's Magic Man, and put up a promotional video of the band performing to the radio edit of this song, missing most of the long instrumental of this song, completely missing this songs greatness. In every Led Zeppelin video these guys put up, there is the usual chorus of commenters telling them they have to see this or that live version of the song they just reacted to. But La and Che keep plugging away to the great studio album originals. Which is what a MUSIC reactor is supposed to do. These guys are the GOAT of music reactors on RUclips.
The beauty of Ann Wilson's voice is that she makes it sound as if she's whispering the tune into your ear, telling you the tale in person, almost pleading with you.
Well-said! (Though, yeah, not as well as "Dreamboat Annie" coulda sung it, lol.) The way she sings those lovely lyrics of "Crazy on You" drives me outta my tree, man. And indeed, they could describe her voice as well: "...The whisper that calls after you in the night/And kisses your ear in the early liigghht..." I mean, just: F*ck. Me. Runnin'.
The "Magic Man" is Mike Fisher, the group's original guitarist. He was Ann Wilson's boyfriend, and she followed him to Canada during the Vietnam War years so he wouldn't get drafted. In 1974, Nancy Wilson (Ann's sister) joined the band and Fisher became their manager and sound engineer. The song is about being madly in love to the point where you are not thinking clearly. The line, "Come on home girl..." relates to Ann Wilson's mother. The line, "Try to understand, Mama, he's a magic man" is Ann's response. Wilson says her mother helped keep her grounded when she was being rather irrational and acting under the spell of her "magic man."
Heart was major followers of Led Zeppelin. You can hear the influence. Ann imitates Robert Plant a lot in her singing. Which is probably why they chose Heart to do Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Awards
I love when you guys both did the step back like “dafuq was that?” And it went next level with the synth, and your enjoyment went up like 5 notches. 👏🏼
If there is any Heart song where the kudos don't belong with Ann and Nancy, this is it. Sure the vocals are are superb - its Ann Wilson after all, but the shared guitar work of Roger Fisher and Steve Leese on this track, especially that mesmerizing trade off during the solo/breakdown are out of this world. Their work is the creative soul of this song
Heart is magnificent and has been for many decades. Try a banger that does not get played as often as Barracuda but is in the same hard rocking vein: Black on Black II. A great hard charging tune, hits like its famous predecessor. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Sister Ann has that vocal power, and she's letting fans know she's found a smooth operator play for real. Yeah, girl, I understand you found the magic. Great song, guys, with excellent vocals, and AirplayBeats commentary.
Sing child sing their greatest song hands down... There's a live version on a public TV show.. please review that one. The whole show is fantastic actually
A straight-up rock/pop song. Incredible debut album with many different styles. Someday you guys have to sit down and listen to the whole thing start to finish. The way we USED to listen to music back in the day! Again, the 70's was a great time to be a teenager! Have a great day!
@@Grizazzle Ya, we all knew each others birthdays since everyone would get at least one album, or the money to buy it! And remember the Columbia Music Club? 12 records for $1.49, but you must buy 12 more at regular price in the next 12 months! Ya, right. They're STILL looking for me!
When Heart first started to blow up they got looked at like a novelty act because most dudes thought chicks couldn't play real rock. They weren't taken seriously and everyone figured they were 1 hit wonders. Heart just kept releasing great tracks that got heavy play on rock stations and before you knew it they went from being a joke to being called the female Led Zeppelin. They kicked in the door for women wanting to get into the Hard Rock genre of the 1970's. Then in 2012 Heart aka (The Female Led Zeppelin) performed Stairway To Heaven for the 3 remaining members of Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors event. Just to add a little more pressure on their performance President Obama was also in the audience. If they were nervous you couldn't tell because they killed it and you can even see Robert Plant nearly tearing up watching the performance.
Great reaction! Ann Wilson has such an incredible voice! I saw them twice in the early 80s and they put on such a fantastic show! Love “Dog and Butterfly”👍🏻🐶🦋
I saw Heart in 1978 in Lake Charles La. I was able to sneak in the concert with my photographer buddy who had a press pass for the local newspaper. They blew my mind Ann singing was off the charts.
Heart is one of those few bands that hit the ground running. First album was multiplatinum, which is true for the majority of their albums. Heart is known for the soaring vocals of Ann Wilson and the sparse, tasteful solo licks of Rodger Fisher. Let's also not leave out the intricate, crescendo segments of their great productions, such as the outro here which lasts half the song. If you're not aware already, the sisters were greatly influenced by Zeppelin. Thus their Kennedy Center tribute to the boys. The sisters said that Plant's praise of their rendition was a highlight of their career. "Magnificent and spectacular, a real 'we're not worthy' moment". Plant
The main lead guitarist is Roger Fisher. Nancy was usually on acoustic or rhythm electric. Have you reacted to Heart doing Stairway to Heaven in front of Led Zeppelin ????? At the Kennedy Center tribute to them they were phenomenal!!! ❤❤❤❤
Damn! You guys picked three killer songs today!! Heart was a fantastic band that succumbed to personal squabbles and relationship problems. Everyone focuses on Anne and Nancy, but the rest of the original band members were phenomenal. The original bassist and drummer tour as Heart To Heart and do these songs as they should be done. Great band.
I freakin’ LOVE THAT SONG!!!!! From the very first time I heard it in the 70’s… some good live versions out there too…. Let’s get high a while indeed! My ears breath in that voice and off I go!
Back in the 70s, one evening me and a friend dropped six hits of microdot, drove my pickup out in the middle of a tobacco field, opened the doors, cranked the radio and laid down in the truck bed and stared at the stars. This song came on and the stars started pulsing to the beat. When it got to the guitar solo, they started swirling around in a spiral, in time with the riff😆. I rarely see her anymore, but she always brings it up when we do.
This song, this first album, took a fantastic local band and sent them on their road to the top of the charts. Before this album and its singles, Heart was one of the hottest acts in the city. Just before they released this, they played any gig in the city they could land and I saw them as many as I could, including one magical night at my high school. Experiencing Heart from five feet away was a joy I'll never forget. It's true, Ann sang in different styles depending on the song, but she was always an incredible singer. A great vocalist knows when to hold back and sing softly and when to blow the gaskets and belt it out. Heart's early sound was Rock mixed with Folk and Gypsy with a strong Led Zeppelin influence. Ann not only sang, she also played flute during several songs. I've so many memories of Heart, before and during the fame, but nothing tops those early years when I could be in the front row of almost any show I caught. I was there enough the sisters and the band recognised me each time. The last time I saw them was August 1978, at an all day concert filled with other bands, in our outdoor football stadium. I've mentioned before my memories of that night so I'll only just say it remains one of my favourite concerts of the hundreds that I've seen.
Hey guys, been watching y'all for a bit but just recently subscribed. Heart. Ann & Nancy Wilson. This song is from their first album, Dreamboat Annie, and every song on it is excellent! I think you already did Crazy On You, but there are many more...I was going to mention others you should look into, but that would include every song, so... Anyways, I've always had the notion that everyone associated with this album had crushes (or more) for Ann & Nancy; the production and mixing alone are stupendous, especially for an unknown band's first album. As for Ann's vocals, I would probably call them crystal clear, strong when needed, soft at times, but there is ALWAYS that perfect pitch, execution, and clarity. The guitars on this song are NOT all Nancy...I think she was mainly the rhythm beat on this one (which was supposedly inspired by Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song). But Nancy IS indeed a genius on any guitar or style, and she obviously (when you meet her) has a mind that works a bit differently than most people (in the best possible way). I actually got to meet and sit down and chat with them both in the late 90's...and they are as charming in person as they are consummate musical artists. Incidentally, they're both still active, mostly apart recently, although they are said to be working together on new materiel right now. You might consider doing this whole album at once, the songs are kind of connected, and the range of different styles is great to follow through the whole thing. Keep up the great songs and the compact but on-point comments, you're doing it just about perfectly yourselves as reactors!
I second the motion to do the whole album! Dreamboat Annie is my 3rd favorite album (from different artists). I really think you guys would enjoy so much working your way through it. If you do break it up into "individual songs", I suggest that you combine the following tracks into single reactions: Dreamboat Annie (Fantasy Child)/Crazy On You (I know you already did it live, but it's so good that you ought to do the studio version, too) Soul of the Sea/Dreamboat Annie (this ends side one of the vinyl) How Deep It Goes/Dreamboat Annie (Reprise) (this ends the album) Here are my 10 favorite albums: 1 - Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans 2 - Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 3 - Heart - Dreamboat Annie 4 - Chicago - Chicago V 5 - Emerson Lake & Palmer - Emerson Lake & Palmer 6 - Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 7 - Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow 8 - Deep Purple - Machine Head 9 - Genesis - A Trick of the Tail 10 - Steely Dan - Aja
Magic Man, my first introduction to rock music in '76. While Nancy Wilson is a stellar guitarist, she primarily plays rhythm acoustic guitar. Their lead (elec) guitarist was Roger Fisher (until '79), and Howard Leese their keyboardist providing 2nd lead guitar duties. It wasn't till Fisher was booted out that Nancy began providing elec rhythm guitar, debuting on their 5th studio album, BeBe Le Strange.
One advantage you guys as "reactors" have over us old-timers is you have had someone recommend these songs to you so you can put them on and really listen to them for the first time. In my case, I would usually hear a new song on the radio without knowing who or what it was. And sometimes I'd turn the radio on in the middle of something I never heard before. And then I'd have to wait for who knows how long to hear it again! The only way to control the situation was to buy the album. And many times the only songs I really cared for were the ones they played on the radio anyway! But sometimes, you play the album when you got home, and then you would realize that there's much more to it then meets the eye (or the radio). Dreamboat Annie was one of those albums. I was STUNNED at how good each and every song was. Those who didn't buy the album never knew what they were missing. It was a great time to be a teenager, but what you heard was really left up to the Program Directors. There's good and bad about that too. Thankfully we hd 4-5 rock stations in the Bay Area. I wore out the push buttons on my Kraco car radio!
Note the drum fill that is basically what Phil Collins most likely lifted for In The Air Tonight (accidentally). This is one of the COOLEST songs ever. It’s a treasure.
I bought this album right after it dropped. A guy who worked at the local record shop would always make suggestions about new records he thought I would like. I think the Seattle area radio stations had played "Magic Man" for a while, but that was my only previous exposure to Heart when I heard this album for the first time. It's still a great listen, in my opinion. Keep on rockin' 🤘 Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
I remember how much we all loved this album when it came out...FYI, they loved Led Zep...And it's no wonder that they were the ones to do Stairway to Heaven at the Led Zep tribute.

Roger Fisher on lead guitar. Nancy played mostly rhythm and acoustic.

It was Roger’s brother who was the actual “Magic Man” she was singing about. He was their manager, and her relationship with him is how Ann & Nancy ended up joining the newly forming band Heart after the dissolution of the band White Heart.

Anne Wilson rock's greatest female voice. Annie Halam Prog's greatest female voice. Two magnificent singers.
Note the drum fill that is basically what Phil Collins most likely lifted for In The Air Tonight (accidentally). This is one of the COOLEST songs ever. It’s a treasure.
I never noticed the fills until today. Sounds good!
You've never played drums have you?
@@bettyrose959 Sorry?
Early HEART were one of the best back in the day! Glad you guys are checking them out!
Her voice is full ; ) great song! Great reaction
I just love the electric guitar on the first four Heart albums. Nancy's voice is just magic how it cuts through so effortlessly. Terrific production.
Anne’s voice.
A small part of my long journey through the BEST “Rock and Roll” years ever is enjoying watching you two connect with the same music I love!
The entire album is worthy of your listen. Classic record.. one you add to your stuck on an island list
SING CHILD SING (live from TV Special 1976) Go see them live, she has a BIGGGGG voice.
Keep on rockin' 🤘

All thing Live from Heart’s Rock Hall induction is a must see!
I remember how much we all loved this album when it came out...FYI, they loved Led Zep...And it's no wonder that they were the ones to do Stairway to Heaven at the Led Zep tribute.
