This is my second video i'm watching from Kalki Kirshnamorthy's family on PS1. They are so humble and easy going accepting the facts how a film can't be exactly the same as novel. And they don't find faults and appreciate the technicians hard work. Such a nice family Kalki Krishnamorthy's family. Good on them.

Very informative interview. Especially loved the portion when Ma'am shared about the incidents when Kalki was writing the novel. It was a pleasant surprise to see the interviewer from the younger generation ask such sharp questions & be knowledgeable about the novel.

Today's newer versions of the PDF books are not carrying the epilogue published by Kalki originally!?
In that epilogue he kind-of-answers few questions and for one question he specifically mentions about Vanthiyathevan marrying Kundavai Nachiyar and quotes a kalvettu.
Nandini is also not a fictional character like she has been portrayed in multiple youtube videos today. It's so unfortunate. In the final book/chapters, she vanishes along with a horse, leaving Periya Pazhuvetayar in a cave. Kalki answers that, she tries her best to bring back Amarabhujangan (AKA old-Madhurthangan) with the help of Mahindan (Lanka king) but Rajarajan defeats him in a war and gives him veera sorkam. She dies after hearing this.
He also mentions how Rajarajan went ahead and punished the killers of Adita Karikalan (Ravidasan and co.)
So, answers are available in the Epilogue. I haven't read the newer editions/PDF, so I don't know if these are available for sharing.

To those who say it is hard to condense Kalki’s story into a few hours as a movie: there are quite a few theatrical dramas on the original Ponniyin Selvan that have been produced and presented “live” where the screen play is TRUE to the original story!!! IN three hours’ time!!! Dialogues were superbly written and delivered “live” on stage. Excellent presentations!

Watched the movie this past Sunday at a theater in New Jersey. My impressions:
- It was a mish-mash.
- A great story but that was not told. No punch. No impact of any dialogue. No impact of any song. No character stood out.
- Horrible Tamil pronunciation in many of the dialogues! Seriously?? They seriously didn’t know the difference between ழ, ல, and ள? ன and ண? In a movie that deals with the Chola period? Why wasn’t anyone watching? What was the Director doing?
- Several strands that were well done. Like melodious music. Some humour. Lots of computer graphics. Beautiful makeup. And so on. But they stayed as separate strands. Didn’t come together to tell a story.
- The only song with some lyrics in it … but alas, the lyrics were not clear. Had to Google it to learn the lyrics. Beautiful but didn’t gel!
- Why this 3+ hour elongation with elements of the Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean, and other such?
- What a Directorial disaster! Why couldn’t Mani Ratnam pull it all together? Looked to me like he was focused on his first name … Spent a lot of money. Felt compelled to recover that money, and make more money. And in the process lost sight of the finer aspects of making a movie. No Ratnam, only money!
- Having read the book and having watched several other great movies in the past based on historical novels, I was feeling grateful: Thank God Kalki didn’t live long enough to watch this movie! 🙏🙏

I watched it last Sunday i NJ too! .. and felt the same way as you did since I had just re-read the novel up to where PS-1 ends before watching the movie .. too many back to back long battle scenes to 'shock and awe' the audience .. instead of bringing out the finer aspects like Kundavai and Nandhini making sarcastic flattering praises of each other and looking for each others body/face gestures for reaction .. A well done Mega-TV serial can probably focus on such aspects better

Agree with you 100 Percent. A great injustice to Amarar Kalki by Mani Ratnam because MR used Kalki's title and Kalki's characters' names/appearances and costumes but changed the happenings and events which has distorted the characterization of characters so badly. Mouna Vali... but we have to voice it out through media as much as possible.
Cine fans around the world should not be misled into thinking that PS1 abatha Kalanjiyam is Kalki's genius and creativity. Mani Ratnam should have the courage to say that he has shamelessly used Kalki's title and characters and distorted them

PS1 screen play is so very different from the original Kalki’s novel. The dialogues, the events, the happenings and the portrayal of the characters are all changed completely. I wonder why Mani Ratnam gave Kalki’s title for “his” screen play. Giving Kalki’s title Ponniyin Selvan is misleading. Why did he retain the same Kalki’s characters’ names/appearances/costumes in his movie, when Mani Ratnam has characterized the characters so differently from Kalki? Cinema fans that have not read Kalki’s story (or remembered Kalki’s PS) should not be misled into thinking that PS1 movie’s screen play is Kalki’s creative child!

If only PS1 screen play was true to Kalki’s story, a versatile director like Mani Ratnam and all the great actors involved would have brought out the beauty, originality and creativity of Kalki and the depth of each and every character, much better. Mani Ratnam could have avoided giving lots of excuses for changing the storyline and for dropping important scenes. Well, some of us feel the pain so badly. Hope the cinema fans around the world are told clearly that PS1 screen play is Mani Ratnam’s imagination and not Kalki’s. The cine fans should be told openly that he has taken Kalki’s PS title and characters’ names/appearances and costumes, but has changed the happenings, events and portrayal of the characters his way, and not Kalki’s way.
People who claim they will give life for Tamizh language should think have they made any effort in translating these great contemporary work to other languages.
Just think of Bharatiyar songs and work, these great books, many of the sanga Tamil works.. that is the way to develop a language and not stop people when a new language is introduced to countries people

குந்தவை ஆதித்தகரிகாலனை சந்திக்கும் காட்சி பொன்னியின் செல்வன் காதையில் கல்கியால் எழுதப்படவில்லை. இதில் சொன்னதுபோல். மணிரத்தினமும் ஜெயமோகனும் பொன்னியின் செல்வன் திரைப்படத்தில், குந்தவை மிகவும் சுலபமாக காஞ்சி சென்று ஆதித்தகரிகாலனை சந்திப்பதாக ஒரு காட்ச்சி அமைத்திருத்தார்கள். அப்படியான ஒரு சுகுனமான நாட்டு நிலைமை இருக்குமாயின், ஏன் ஆதித்தகரிகாலன், சிறந்த வீரன் நண்பன் வந்தியத்தேவனை தேர்ந்து தஞ்சக்கு அனுப்பவேண்டும், அவனுடைய பயணமும் மிகவும் சாமர்த்தியம் நிறைத்ததாக சித்தரிக்கவேண்டும்??. இதனால்தான், கல்கி அப்படி சந்தர்ப்பத்தை காதையில் அமைக்கவில்லை !!!. இந்த காட்சியமைப்பு கதையின் போக்கில் உறுத்தலாக உள்ளது.

Not satisfied with her response on Aditya Karikalan’s murder. From the inception we all know who killed him (Ravidasan bros). Wish Mr.Kalki included this clearly in the epic novel 👍🙏
I believe the confusion and lack of clarity on the murderer is intentional on the part of Kalki. The whodunnit generated lots of discussion then (and now!), and contributed to keeping the story in people's minds.
