Let me say as someone that has had the luxury of knowing and working with Carla at Gilbert what a wonderful person and incredible resource she is to all students. She and other substitute teachers deserve far more: respect, autonomy, and pay. I am very lucky 🍀 and grateful to call Carla a friend. Positive vibes and love to her future endeavors wherever they may lead.

Where are you getting 745 am from? If we had prayer in schools we would be praying all day long. Or various times throughout the day. A lot of teachers are Christians. At least where I am from. At my old church I would go to , I would see them walk in and think, wow I know this teacher from this school and this teacher from that school etc. in my women’s Bible study a few women also said they were teachers. The pastors wife was in that Bible study. I was so disappointed when The preacher preached a sermon and said, I don’t know if any of you are teachers but what is vacation was the same thing as school? Well basically, vacation is just the absence of school. You know none of teachers can afford vacation unless we have a rich spouse. Second of all, how do you as a pastor not know your congregation? That’s the sign of a bad pastor! He didn’t even bother to ask his wife before he got up on the stage. She could have told him.
Carla Wilson speaks so well for teachers - and she rightly identified the problem- bureaucratic sponges soak up the $$$ that might be better spent retaining by supporting and compensating the boots on the ground going eyeball to eyeball with the customers.
They have a problem but it’s not my problem. That’s what the sub have said. The biggest problem with these kinds of jobs is trying to fix other peoples problems . If the administrators are noticing this big of a problem them guilt shaming or victim blaming one substitute is not going to fix the problem. They need to do a complete overhaul with the school district. Find out where all this money is going. Find out why teachers aren’t showing up to work. Find out which jobs take priority over others. Put paras and administrators in positions even if it’s only for a few hours at a time. Trying to put the whole district’s problems on a person who is making $11 an hour is the fastest way to make them leave or get overly stressed out. People are right. There Should Not be any Agencies to hire Substitute Teachers. Schools Should Directly Hire Substitutes. Agencies are not good. Agencies make money for themselves. They make their own rules and don’t pay much.

My net pay last month for full time was only 1660 bucks for a month's work due to high medical benefit costs. Subbing here in OKC pays 150 per day and no grading or planning, nice! No benefits but I'm on medicare, no need. Subbing beats 12 hour days and kids are nicer.
Yep. I have never gotten paid that much but I just switched districts. It took several months because HR moves a snail’s pace, but there is no reason to keep working in my district that pays $70 a day when the next county over pays $150 a day. Thank you for the advice. It makes me feel more excited to get back in there. I have been feeling under the weather lately. Job hunting/switching is no joke!
Until “the powers that be” respect and recognize the true value of educators, the teacher shortage in this country will continue to increase. We retired teachers would be a good pool to pull from, but some school districts don’t want to hire us if we’re part of a teacher retirement benefits system. They’d rather hire someone younger and inexperienced to save a few bucks. 🤦🏽♀️Eventually they’re going to be looking for teachers and substitute teachers in the daylight with a flashlight!🤨
As a paraprofessional, the sub shortage can be really taxing on us as well because then we get pulled in their place away from our usual schedules. But, I don't blame them. The pay is the same as mine now, starting out, and you don't get benefits. I've suggested to many to become a Para, but it isn't all that better - and the added benefits aren't all that amazing. I love my job, though, and so do the subs that I talk to on a regular basis which is why we stay.

Do you think that if teacher's wages were reasonable and way better, then she would accept the teaching position vacancy? And this includes teachers in general. There is a reason why a huge number of teachers have quit teaching in general this school year compared to other years. This is due to unrealistic expectations from the district and low pay (and yes it's low pay because a lot of teachers do a lot more in the classroom and outside than just teaching subjects). There is no point for a teacher to give a student extra help after school since it's a lot of time taken out of their day with the pay they get.

How is she collecting unemployment while subbing? As subs we aren't allowed to collect unemployment. I was reminded this during the shutdown of 2020. The school district denied my unemployment and the way they talked to me during the unemployment appeal hearing was NASTY! The lady basically called me stupid in so little words. So now that she said she has collected unemployment, will she have to pay all this back? If not, I would like my benefits too, damn!
It might depend on the STATE you live in. I hear in Texas, substitute teacher is a 1099 job. In California its a W-2 type job....that does allow for unemployment benefits during SCHOOL YEAR....BUT NOT DURING SUMMER. So it's best to CALL 📞 YOUR UNEMPLOYMENT OFFICE AND GET THE OFFICIAL RESPONSE. You may not be eligible for backpay because it's based on the WEEK YOU Filed 😉.

At my school paras get a bathroom key. I asked for building subs to have that courtesy and it took almost 3 months for it to be supplied to us
I would say out of my 22 years of teaching only 3 of them I wanted to quit because some (not all) of my students made it difficult to be a teacher. The other 19 years have been difficult at times because of other issues other than the students. Often the students are the only thing that keep us hanging in there day in and day out, and yes there is the pension and health insurance but that’s at the end if we don’t walk away and many do even after 20 or 25 years in the profession!!! You’d be surprised how many teachers walk right before their “ big” 😂🙄 paydays.
I walked away after 10 years. My BIG payout about $300 per month. No health/dental/life ins, too expensive I couldn’t live in my car for that. Thank goodness for my husband and our room mates. Without them I’d be homeless.
Increase educators pay so u don’t deal with this. Subs should just be able to take attendance and make class remains in class then class dismissed not to teach.
How does that work? Subs aren't just needed at the high school level where this sort of thing might even work. And it wouldn't work long-term, even there, as you have to teach something to them eventually. Subbing at the elementary level is SO much more. You cannot just 'take attendance' and 'keep them in the class' for 8 hours.
So you want to stay a part time resource, but you want full time benefits? The sub system doesn't work for schools and needs to be replaced, but paying subs more when they can pick and choose whether to work or not isn't viable.
You truly need to experience a day in the life of a substitute teacher. You need to find a clue. What do you know? Would you work for the wages these substitute teachers get.

Texas special education aides get paid 10 an hour with bachelor degree, and extra help
I’m a sub and I make less than that. I have a bachelor degree. If it wasn’t for the benefit of being in my kids schedule, I’d be out in a heartbeat.

Someone told me to work as a manager at JC Penny they pay more. I have my own business and quit teaching I'm so much better off now

The reason sub pay is so low is because they can't pay subs more than certified teachers, and we all know teacher pay is horrible.

When you are a sub you don't do it 4 money you do it 4 the kids,that's should always be the Incentive nothing else. I have been a sub for over 30 years, and could have retired over 6 years ago, but don't because I love what I do,and will keep do it until I'm not able to,who care about money it's the kids nothing else.
