- As Lisa Sanetti is quick to point out, most people can vividly recall their favorite teachers growing up. In her talk, Sanetti discusses the crisis of teacher stress which she believes is a problem whose affect won't be limited to the teacher and the students. She further explains why we need to pay more attention to this issue and outlines the possible implications of it.
From the 2018 TEDxUConn Conference which took place on April 8th, 2018. The theme for the event was Zero to Hero. Dr. Sanetti is an associate professor of School Psychology at the University of Connecticut. Her research interests include implementation science, educator well-being., and school-based mental health. Her research has been funded by the US Department of Education and private foundations. Dr. Sanetti developed and evaluated a system of supports to facilitate teachers’ implementation of school-based interventions that is being adopted by schools across the country. She received the UConn Early Career Scholar Award, Early Career Scholar Award from the Society for the Study of School Psychology, and the Lightner Witmer Award from the American Psychology Association for the scope and impact of her research. Dr. Sanetti received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a licensed psychologist in Connecticut, and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Prior to joining the faculty at UConn, she was a behavioral consultant serving schools throughout New England. In this role, she provided assessment and intervention services to children with significant disabilities and/or mental health issues and their families and educators. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Teaching is one of the most demanding and stressful profession.
I agree. I used to be a journalist and had to meet deadlines every day. I thought it was quite stressful. Oh my, the stress couldn't even compare to teaching. Only 2 months into teaching, and I'm on anxiety meds.
@@kpfern2337 wow really? I like hearing from people who've been in both worlds. Would you go back to journalism?
Hi can u elaborate. I always considered going into teaching and thought it was less stressful compared to being in corporate
I would like to see systemic change by looking to models around the world. Smaller classes. More planning time. Start there. It is a funding crisis, in part.
Well said and do timely. Thank you!
Yes, we also don’t prioritize the mental health of our students and often don’t have the resources to support students. The pay also puts a lot of financial stress on us.
And also developing healthy relationships with the parents…
I left after 8 years in. Title 1 school. The secondary trauma and burnout due to the nature of the job eventually did me in. It’s not a sustainable profession anymore.too many moving parts/ demands and not enough support or respect. The system is beyond broken and sadly will not change anytime soon
Hi can u elaborate. I always considered going into teaching and thought it was less stressful compared to being in corporate
Reduce teacher stress by reducing class size!!!
I've been teaching for 17 years and I'm ready to QUIT. I'm doing it for my own physical and mental well-being.
Hi can u elaborate. I always considered going into teaching and thought it was less stressful compared to being in corporate
I'm only in my second year and learned this: it doesn't matter how good of a school you teach at, teaching is still a stressful and borderline toxic profession. And it doesn't have to be this way!! Administrators can only do what their supervisors let them and even they wish this could be different! I got in trouble for cutting items out of my classroom from a shared lesson (we are told to assign more work than necessary) and for giving my class an open notes test (the real world let's you have resources). I'm only 23, 2nd year in and burnt out! If I want to make any adjustments, i get in trouble, even if I still meet standards. I'm tired, but I dont know what else to do with my life.
Become your own boss in a business that you’re interested in im planning to quit and start a party rental business good luck
Why toxic ?
It can be toxic for many reasons. The parents, the admin, other teachers, dealing with constant behavior problems and kids with special needs with zero support. 24 year public school veteran. I've seen it all.
You're young ... get out before you're stuck.
I did my best but still my best wasnt enough. Receiving complaints from those parents really puts me into a state where I feel useless most of the time. Imagine doing everything you can but received no appreciation
😢😢
You're not alone, been going thr😊ough the same stuff.
You're not alone, I planned my lessons so thoroughly, spent time designing the PowerPoint slides and then designed discussion questions. But my students don't participate and my principal make it my fault... I feel like the most useless teacher
I'm leaving teaching because of stress. I've taught 17 years and I cannot take another year of feeling like this.
well you survived for 17 years so you should be used to it unlike newcomers who quit in less than 5 years
@@Gencturk92 it keeps getting harder ever year. It doesn’t matter how long you have done it.
@@Gencturk92 obviously not a teacher or you'd know how teaching is nowhere near the same as it was 17 years ago
@@quirkyjerk well someone has to do it otherwise how are kids going to learn in school ?
They overwhelm us with too many professional development, SGO's , even mentors who when you ask them a simple question what they only do is to add it on their profile and report it, just to do their jobs. They keep adding exams like Tp, the alternate route has now 400 hours, program and extra assignment. They ask us to give students quizzes and assessments all the time. Report cards open on due date and closes again in 2 days. Several observations. They think that textbook is old fashion and give us the curriculum like titles and we have to burn out looking for resources or create our own. It is a failing school system. They ask us to improve students scores so the district remains with high scrore results even if students know nothing, it is business. !!!
Teachers must be respected.
Teacher stress needs to be dealt with to preserve the sanity of teachers.
I swear people should be talking about this more. It's almost impossible to find help with this, especially during covid and having to teach online.
they do, there are videos on youtube about teachers quitting
Give teachers RESPECT, TRUST, MONEY, TIME and DECENT CONDITIONS!!!
really we need to pay more attention to the teacher stress as this can effect both student as well as teachers and society at large
in life there's stress everywhere, look at emergency services who have to work 24/7 around the clock and deal with dangers and hoax calls
"Teacher Stress : A Crisis Ignored" is a very relevant topic and nicely explained.
They gaslight teachers with “self care” platitudes and never actually do anything about the reasons teachers need self care
High time for issues like these to be addressed. Great initiative.
I’m in my first year and I’m ready to quit. It’s so stressful and not worth it
So much of the stress could be countered by simply employing more teachers. If you give teachers ample time to plan and tailor lessons properly, the children will be more engaged and the teachers more passionate. Unfortunately after all the extra curricular arrangements, marking, cover, playground duties etc it leaves teachers with minimal time to actually plan for the job they applied to do.
no point because they quit in less than 5 years, I dont know what my future kids going to be like when they go school, by that time there wont be any teachers left always substitute teachers and this leaves an impact on the kids, they will fail their exams as there's no teachers to teach
@@Gencturk92 Hang on... Are you really coming here to blame the teacher? On a TED talk about the reason teachers are super stressed?
@@jamesc4840 does it really matter ? at the end of the day teachers are quitting so whats the point sending children to school then ? its just a waste of time
@@Gencturk92 Exactly. So as a society it should be our responsibility to try and rectify the issue. If we want good teachers to stay, something has to change.
And dont forget the never ending demand for assessments and data
It's just been 7 months and I'm ready to quit but I'm hesitant. It really is not worth u destroying your mental and physical health. It has effected me to the point, I get anxiety attacks almost every day.
Added job responsibilities are limitless, but with no additional time or support. School is mostly in-person now, but it hasn't stopped. In many ways it has become worse.
We need more sessions like this to spread awareness about the issue of teacher stress.
Thank you for taking up this much neglected topic and discussing it in detail.
many people do not want to understand the stress of teachers.Very practical and exceptional aspects have been reflected.
I really need to talk to someone about this. I can’t even sleep anymore. Where’s a good forum for this?
I took the plunge into seeking out a therapist today. Many teachers I work with see one regularly and it really helps. Take care of yourself first
Same here. If you find a forum please let me know cause I really need to talk to someone about this too
It is essential to discuss teachers' stress also. Very well discussed.
This kind of speeches can help the to understand real psychological situation of teacher.
This did not age well! Im a teacher, and would love for her to do another TedTalk, now that we’ve lived through a pandemic. I have one foot out the door!
Discussion on this topic is very timely and need more session like this.
24 year teacher here. While I appreciate the concern here, you haven’t hit on the biggest reason for the stress: workload. Everything is dumped on teachers while time to do it all is taken away. And who is doing this? Their bosses - administrators and superintendents and school boards.
Teaching sucks! I have been teaching for 17 years and it's so dissapointing because we get paid very little and crazy amount of work and teacher stress is a society problem...we have to motivate everybody when we are barely have that motivation in our plate! The career is very emotionally burdening! And nobody gets it!...
P S Very true. I just took a whole week off due to stress and anxiety. Was just put on an antidepressant 4 days ago. 18 years in. I’m so ready to go.
@@dgrant5919 I am sorry to hear that but at least you are reaching out for help and finding some aides to cope better. God bless you.
it is a very important topic, which was ignored to a large extent. apt during this situation in particular. thank you so much
Amazing! 5 years on and the teacher stress levels have worsened, especially after COVID, and the number of students who cannot meet their outcomes has tripled.
So Useful

Great session! although the irony is that the victims are usually the ones listening but the perpetrators (direct and indirect) don't care.
True. But at least we are opening our eyes. Many of us victims don’t even know that we are being victimized. I wonder if there is something we can do?
A job I sincerely REGRET!
Same here. My colleagues and I have to talk each other through every school year. It's a very frustrating job especially when some get more workloads than others.
Thank you for discussing on this very relavant, important topic of teacher stress.
I didn't realize the huge economic impact of 7B a year due to teacher turnover. That's just one of the many grave impacts. Thank you for addressing this issue.
