  • A review of another very much anticipated from Hornby. The all new SR Air-Smoothed Merchant Navy Class, '21C1' 'Channel Packet', stunning SR Malachite Green.
    Designed by Oliver Bulleid, the Merchant Navy Class was first and largest of Bulleid’s Iconic air-smoothed Pacific’s, incorporating a number of new developments in British steam locomotive technology, including welding in the construction process, and use of steel fireboxes.
    Classified as Mixed Traffic to get around wartime regulation, a total of 30 locomotives were constructed between 1941 and 1949.
    There iconic air-smoothed body, often mistaken for streamline, was designed to aid the lifting of exhaust gases, though often had the adverse effect. Interestingly it also meant the loco could be cleaned using a carriage washer, reducing labor costs.
    Due to certain issues, all members of the class were later rebuilt, replacing features such as the Bulleid chain driven valve gear and the removal of the air-smoothing.
    Withdrawn began in 1964, with the last in 1967, with a total of 11 locomotive being preserved.
    Hornby have done an stunning job in capturing the beautiful Air-Smoothed Design of the prototype in model form, as well as featuring a high level of detail, including fully detailed cab interior, sprung buffers, plus smooth and powerful running straight from the box. It is a must for any Southern Region modeller!
    Hope you enjoy!

    Wow great review of the model mate. The site of the Merchant Navy class in Malachite Green livery with LNER coaches looks very much like what going on at the Severn Valley this weekend were the Battle of Britain class "92 Squadron" could be hauling those coaches during the gala.

    Thanks for the review it really is a superb model, now all that needs to happen is for Hornby to release a Br blue version and I'll be happy. Incidentally there are plans to restore General Steam Navigation to original air smoothed condition so one day we may see a full size version.

    Enjoyed your review. Even with your positive comments, I have decided not to buy the model from Hornby, which still has the model in stock. Their price is £157 after rewards points, so is great value compared to your price of £154.99 some years ago.

      Could rename one GSN (given she is being restored to original condition) and she was the only Merchant Navy to haul passengers over the S&D, Clan Line and an entire GSN the only other MN runs on the line ran run light engine over the southern half of the S&D.

    I've always preferred the look of the Air-Smoothing on the Merchant Navies than on the West Countries. The Merchant Navies' Air-Smoothing just looks more polished and professional with the cleaner and smoother edges as opposed to the Ugly flared out front end of early West Countries.

      Know what you mean, really does suit them well. Hornby have done a stunning job in recreating it. Never know, one day we might see a real Air-Smoothed Merchant in steam once more. Many thanks!

    Excellent review mate! Love those teaks before I forget. Now then as SR man who was lucky enough to start on the footplate when we still had lots of X steam men, I heard all about the Bullieds (was at Woking as well) I have always had a soft spot for them, West Countries being my favorite and I like the Air smoothed look as well (top marks for getting that right) As impressive as it is there is something about this loco that for me just does not sit well, nothing to do with the model which is spot on. lol The cab detail is great, feel like you could hope up, check the glasses and head away don't you :) Lovely model, great review.

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 лет назад

      Thanks ever so much Mike! Thought you'd like this one. There really is something about Bulleids, such innovate looking machines. I know what you mean, but that's the sort of thing I love with odd looking locos ;) The cab detail really is something else! Got to be on the best detail wise to date! Glad you enjoyed

    Amazing model, superb review Cal! Excellent runner I see, altough i still think hornbys finishing off of locos still needs not look less plasticy.. compared to older releases that is.

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks ever so much mate! Truly is a stunning model indeed! Honestly the model by no means looks plasticy in the flesh, just the poor lighting in my loft. Did the same for the Adams and even the light green Peckett (which is Metal) ;) Don't think it likes light green ;) Many thanks indeed!

    Surely, Hornby is sending you free stock so you will review by now. If not, they are being foolish. Great review, well done as usual. I am going to stay with my rebuilt Merchant Navy. They did do a lovely job on the air smoothed version, however. Back to the carpentry shop.

    It is a nice looking loco but the price is getting up there ! It could be just me but I am also finding that on cabs that are more enclosed the detailing becomes better and it is harder to see :(

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 лет назад

      It really is indeed. Though sadly with the cost of materials and labor it looks to be going that way, but you certainly get what you pay for detail wise. The cab detail is stunning! Really is just like the real thing

    the unrebulit merchant navies were by the southern drivers better as opposed to the rebuids its well known that they caught fire inside the oil baths but they must have looked magnificent in malachite or in 1949-50 br blue with with white and black lining

    Cheap printed number/nameplates detract from a very nice model. For over one hundred and sixty spondulicks I would expect fine etched number nameplates at least to be included in the package. This doesn't shape up at this price-point to the new Dapol Class 68 diesel for instance, which has proper lights and etched plates fitted.

    • @LNER985
      @LNER985 7 лет назад

      The number/nameplates don't detract from the model and the number/nameplates are not bad. In my opinion fine etched number and nameplates are not needed to make it a great model. It is not too hard to get your own fine etched number and nameplates.

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 лет назад

      Hi SuperWHIZZO. The camera and light sadly does not do the plates any justice. When I first got the model out the box it honestly looked like they are metal. Really is a stunning piece of kit. Though if you do wish to replace them with etched ones, they can be sourced

    • @SuperWHIZZO
      @SuperWHIZZO 7 лет назад

      My experience of sourcing etched plates is its a bit hit and miss. Hornby's duchess plastic" printed-on" plates are larger than scale , so proper scale etched plates aren't long enough. This early "Southern Railway" version of this machine is awesome in photographs and the model would have benefitted from plates that reflected that !

    • @SDJR7F88
      @SDJR7F88  7 лет назад

      Should be no size issues with this one, as they plastic ones pop off.
