Ah, the Rebuilt Hush-hush, known as the"Loud-Loud" by engine crews. Both the LNER and BR were slightly at a loss how to use it, but it usually hauled Leeds-King's Cross expresses. Although quick and reliable, it wasn't as lively as an A4 and not quite as popular with crews as the A4 either. (As the nickname suggested, it was loud even by the standards of a normal steam engine) But it did do a good job, and it was a tragedy that it was withdrawn in 1959.

I’ve actually just bought the last 1 of these rebuilt W1 models. As of the time of making this comment. I just now after 12 years started buying Hornsby models. I’ve wanted them for so long. Today. I got the “mallard record breaker “ set. And I’m absolutely in love. It’s my first set. And I’ll definitely be collecting mallard in her proper LNER configuration. As well as anniversary edition models of her. I hope to one day own a live steam one. Greasley is my favorite locomotive designer. Despite the fact that I’m American. I look forward to enjoying my hornby models for years to come

Decent loco with proper mechanism. Relieved that the dodgy wheels under the cab didn't cause any derailments. Quality control Hornby, quality control, as well as less than exorbitant pricing. Pleased that this Hush-hush was way better than the previous effort Sam, and also really pleased you got a refund on that. Best, Pete.

Thanks Pete - yes the only good thing about them being miles off the track is that they can't cause derailment.... bit of a lazy design though! Definitely a huge improvement overall though! :D

Super super mild point here: the slope at the front of the tender would technically still help as streamlining even if it's going the "wrong" way. It promotes smooth airflow behind the cab instead of turbulent air, preventing a reverse sucking force from being generated by low air pressure and pulling the locomotive backwards slightly as it moves.
Whether this is the actual reason they're there I don't know, all I have is a couple days of experience putting random objects in a wind tunnel.

Dear Hornby: you will make more money if more people can afford your models.
Comparing the tender with the tender on my original Hush Hush, it looks like the same tender but with streamlined modifications. The performance reminds me of my original one (I was lucky to get a good one). If your rebuilt one is like my original one, the performance will continue to improve.
Good to see that one perform well, after what happened with the originals I was scared to buy a rebuilt one; but not so much now. I may go for a rebuilt one at some point.
Cheers mate, and keep up the good work!

I've had a similar story to you really. Dodgy un-rebuilt W1 that I sent back. The main difference though is that they sent me a new un-rebuilt W1 and it ran far smoother. It's actually one of the smoothest in my collection. I think what happened is that Hornby rushed the pre-order W1s so that they can get to their customers before Christmas, seeing as the model had various delays. (I pre-ordered mine back when the model was first announced so I actually got mine for £200). Now though I think all W1s that Hornby will make are going to be the same quality. We just had to wait for another month of production.

Very accurate review and compares well to my experience. I too was disappointed about the pony truck wheels not touching the track, but on the plus side it doesn't short out negotiating curved points, which has happened on others where the wheels do touch the rails. It also did require a longer running-in period to become totally smooth at low speed, but after that it runs impeccably and is an extremely quiet and smooth locomotive.
Keep up the great and 'as you experience it' reviews. They are what we count on!

  • @cbrooks122000

Good review Sam. The front bogie design is better on this one too, it is a copy of the A4 one which is much better that the front bogie on your original Hush Hush. There is also less to fall off on this one, in that there are no front steps. Why Hornby didn't make them a customer fit on the original one amazes me, it would stop all the complaints of them falling off.

  • @csrthings

Extra packaging does help as I ordered R3866 BR Battle Of Britain Class Winston Churchill from another great retailer Hereford models (who tend to have a lot of old new stock at the old prices) and it arrived safely as they secured the model box in a foam casing with some of that air bubble packaging around it.
The rebuilt versions of the Hush hush are very interesting as the original un rebuilt versions looked very alien and sci fi for a steam locomotive. The rebuilt versions actually look more attractive with the streamlining.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  2 года назад

Yeah absolutely - good packaging is the bare minimum... and fortunately most sellers (except Hornby of course) seem to fully realise this! Just goes to show how fundamentally inept Hornby are as a "retailer"

    1. Will you do a review of the more modern Hornby LNER teaks? I’ve seen that they look stunning but would love to see you do a review on the,
    2. Does Gadwall still run? I know it used to be your Channel ‘mascot’ at one point but most times you run A4s now it’s Mallard.

  • @spankflaps1365
    @spankflaps1365 2 года назад +6

I got one of these because it would be rude not to. It’s pretty sweet, but a shame it doesn’t have the gloss finish of the Locomotion Mallard Ltd Edition.
The original streamlined W1 got scrapped prematurely by BR because it didn’t have a spare boiler to swap in at overhaul time. And the LNER region were over-efficient at scrapping loco’s, presumably due to lack of space.
But the actual corridor tender off the W1 still exists on No. 9 “Union of South Africa”.

    • @TallboyDave
      @TallboyDave 2 года назад

Pretty much; but also, there wasn't any equivalent of Woodham Bros. in the East or North-East; Cashmore's, C F Booth, and other companies didn't have the big backlogs of surplus goods stock to work through like Barry Scrapyard had.

you're wrong about her scraping. The original tender that the W1 was coupled to is now coupled to preserved A4 No.60009 Union Of South Africa. The tender number is 5484. I was able to stand on the tender fore plate while I was visiting Britain a few years ago and I could feel the presence of the W1 while standing on the tender fore plate. The W1 lives on today, though just the tender, but 10000 still lives on today!

Fun fact: Oliver Bulleid became Sir Nigel Gresley’s (personal) assistant in LNER before he became CME of SR. So, he had a considerable influence from him.
According to the LNER info website, the shape of the A4 series were inspired when both men saw a Bugatti (whereever they did go). I think 1930’s Bugatti were wavy on their looks and design so, it makes sense.

Glad to see you have a working example and happy to know you are getting a third one. Does seem like a great loco this time round. I would personally not give 5 star on the detail without firebox flicker or something like that. The window on the rear of the tender is atrocious too. The valve gear is a particular highlight though. Your use of the P2 is actually perfect as they shared the same/very similar boiler type post W1 rebuild.
Unfortunately after my two 812's and APT I can't justify it for the price. Nevertheless, I'm still happy to have 2 812's and no W1. The APT always holds a special place in my heart and whilst there are some things I'd have hoped to have for the money I'm very happy with it. It's very expensive but then again it is an entire train. Do you have any plans to do any DMU/EMU's at all? Your Derby Lightweight review inspired me to get one. Aware though that you can often do 2 steam/diesel engines for the price.

Good and fair review as usual, this runs better than the last abysmal offering. The only thing that lets it down is the pony wheels under the cab. It's as if they've forgotten to fit a washer so that the wheel flanges actually touch the rails. Very irritating. I have an older Hornby A4 and ALL the wheels make contact with the rail head...
All the best and take care,

Looks good, others have said the unrebuilt version can run good too.
Buying RTR has always been a quality gamble. Most are good but you do get a few bangers slip through.
With modern RTR wanting £180-250 it's too much for me ATM except for a rare treat and seeing as RTR is still the gamble it shouldn't be, taking the risk is much more of an off put than it used to be.
Just wish they'd put more in the QC so the nails that slip through the grate are few n far between.

But when Hornby get there acts together then you got quality.
As for the high rrp i read the satements online it`s due to high shipment cost and to high price when the buy the raw materials sutch as plastic.

I am glad you have a good one at last and that Hornby's honour is partially restored. Yes, the wheels under the cab are not great but I took issue with SK on that in a 2020 Hornby video they ran when we could send in questions. To be fair, mine was the first question put to SK so he did confront the issue head-on. Also, yes it is very expensive. £200 was a lot for my unrebuilt one. £220 even when discounted is going to take some getting used to and buying new models is going to be more of a rare event for me from now on. I hesitate to spend that much when an accident or momentary lapse could effectively write it off. Keep up the very good work but perhaps lay-off the silly voices? Ah, but then it would not be Sam, would it?

Trailing axles... Perhaps there is an option for adding one of the flanged wheel sets for broader curves, then the second flanged wheel set for very broad curves... plus using the "close coupling" bringing the tender and total body-lines together.
Also on the trailing axles assembly, were you able to figure out why the left and right side wheels were so mismatched in height?
I'm happy that your results were better than "satisfactory". Hush Hush model quality improvement "sounds" like a pleasant winner.
As I mentioned in a previous review, the torque may be quite dependent on the DCC full amperage power-sources. "Straight-Improved" DC controllers might not provide such capabilities.
By the way, imagine the next "running session" requests... A4 and W1 double header and 20+ coaches in tow! It would look like blue big and little brother providing matching teamwork.
    Good review, Sam.

Yes mukka, I'm very angry with the gouging a&$#holes at Hornby. I ordered the complete APT train last year with a reputable retailer. Prior to Xmas I received all the extra coaches I had ordered (but not the 5 car set with a powercar & driving trailers)
Then this month the retailer said the five car set was soon to be sent to me but, the price had shot up! I was stuck... I almost told them to jam it where it should hurt but then I would have been stuck with all the extra coaches! (I suppose I could have modelled a scrap yard where most if the coaches ended up in reality but I had already spent a fortune!)
Not having much choice I have paid the extra funds to acquire the 5 car set to complete the train. I am not happy at all... very disgraceful business sense. I won't be buying any more Hornby stock any more. Will just stick to the second hand market from now on.
Thanks for an interesting review. (I bought the original Hush Hush and apart from a couple of loose parts seems ok. The stupid flangeless wheels are nonsense. I have replaced the wheels with proper ones and as such made the loco to a static display model now.
Stay safe. Regards from Oz. Gaz

The LNER Modified W1 Hush Hush is essentially just like a LNER A4 but instead of the normal 4-6-2 Pacific Wheel Arrangement, the LNER Modified W1 Hush Hush has a 4-6-4 wheel arrangement.
Anyways, Mr Sam’s Trains. Still waiting on that BR class 28, and that OO9 scale Model Layout. I recommend you try OO9 scale. It’s basically the Narrow gauge companion to OO scale. Their are plenty of OO9 scale stuff from Heljan, and Bachmann and Hornby. Their are also plenty of 3d prints. OO9 scale is cool.

After the hassle with the last one I actually crossed my fingers for you this time. Faults aside its good to see this is a somewhat servicable loco.
Is there anything you can do with those trailing wheels?
I would say a careful hand with a dremel would tidy up that rear window a little and most of the things on it should be relatively simple fixes.
Of course at over £200 you really shouldn't have to but at least now its a working model it may be worth it.

"Adding the Flanged Rear wheels make that Rear Pony look at least Cosmeticly better..??"
Mainly because if the 'un flanged' wheels are No Where near the Track, they are not going to interfere with the Cornering with Flanges on..!?

Ooh, a new tender tooling. I guess Hornby are now gonna use this for some of their A4s, since this streamlined type hadn't been produced until now.
So glad this one is much better than your previous one. I'd be tempted by one in BR garter blue because I love transitional liveries, but the price is just too high for me to be able to afford any new hornby or bachmann release. I'd struggle to see how £150 for a hornby A4 is a reasonable price, but they're the same price as this.
Although, I'd rather spend £220 on a W1 than an 812 or Improved Precedent...
Looking at the other locos on the layout. I got a L1 a couple of weeks ago, awesome loco (rear buffers had been glued so aren't sprung), runs very well and can haul more than my Q6 and similar.

How does Hornby have customers anymore? Everyone should make a collective agreement to stop buying from them for a year and see how their customer care changes! Crooks!
Glad it works better, but I don't see how a loco with 4 of the wheels floating above the track gets a 5/5 on detail :) ...and for that price! Wowza!
Keep up the good work Sam.

I do wonder if the prices in the second hand market will go up (as they have done in the car market) but maybe the 'industry's reliance' on Chinese manufacturing has now come back to 'haunt them' !

Great review Sam, I was sure you were going to find a major fault, but plesently suprised when you didn't. When first unpacking it, did yours have a big white notice warning that the tender wiring and drawbar have to be fitted prior to first use ? An attempt to prevent in transit damage Hornby say.
I've just run-in mine with Olivia's DCC Sound on the rolling road like yours using my new (well 2nd hand) Prodigy Advance2 controller for the very first time. Loco performed very well like yours. Turned the background birdsongs function on and left it to it; very relaxing !
That larger cab highlights just how much blue there is. Bachmann has raised the bar with their new V2 which we both have. They painted the wooden side window frames, so I will try to do the same as I did with my P2. It makes quite a difference in upping the quality look. Also the inside cab details need the copper pipes colour differentiated from the brass fittings. I may do this to.
I wish the wheels were a brighter red like Dapol's Black Label LNER blue A4s and again wish those trailing wheels touched the track. I noticed those trailing wheels are held in by their own keeper plate. I wonder if there is any wiggle room to get the axles to drop down a bit ?

@@SamsTrains Yes, the notice slip says the drawbar is in the detail pack, which it was. As I ran it in on the rolling road, I didn't need to fit it there and then, so must remember to do so.

I do really like this version. I like the original condition one in LNER Green more than the Photographic Grey. Value for money now isn’t the same as value for money in 2019. While it doesn’t make the pill any easier to swallow, current world economics should be considered in this regard.

Sorry ignore that comment about the bogie, they are the same but the mounting for the rebuilt one is not so high, so the chassis must be slightly different. I suspect they found the issue with the original but couldn't correct it until the rebuilt one. On the rebuilt one the mounting slot is about 1 to 2 mm shorter.
