- What?! A Chuggington review on a Thomas Wooden Railway channel? Yes, it's a bit weird, but let me explain! After all those years of battling each other on store shelves, it appears that Thomas and Friends has won the war over Chuggington. Personally, I don't feel there's any harm in unboxing and comparing the two wooden railway lines of merchandise in a neutral setting. More importantly, it lets us Thomas fans see if Chuggington was really anything to worry about in hindsight. Take a wild guess as to which one I end up preferring when the video's all said and done. ;)

Before 2010, Chuggington used the traditional track, and in 2010, they switched over to this new system. I'm no Chuggington expert, I just got a bit of background knowledge on the series and the merchandise.

In my eyes, Chuggington switching to plastic connectors is like the new Thomas Wood track. It does not make anything easier; it just makes people who own multiple brands lives miserable.

Anyways, great review!! If I were to compare it with a Thomas Wooden Railway set, I would compare the set (Cargo Crossover) to the Coal Hopper Figure 8 set. Both sets have elevation segments, for the Chuggington set it would be the weird track connectors with the Lego Duplo - ish supporters, which are made of plastic. And for the Thomas set it would be the Bridge which unlike the Chuggington set, is made entirely of wood and is sturdier. The sets also include a building that will load the cargo into the trucks / cargo cars, the Thomas set includes the Crosby coal Hopper that if you push the roof (plastic piece that will also make the coal in it wobble) will make the coal load fall into the included Crovan's Gate Coal Truck / Car whereas the Chuggington set includes a Plastic building or tower, which has a plastic piece, and if you tip it, the wooden but Thomas Wood - ish kind of crate will fall into the plastic truck / Car. Phew! I've only talked about 2 sections of the sets and YET I can't tell you HOW MANY TIMES, I've said 'Plastic'. Anyhoo, both sets, of course, features a character from the show, the Chuggington set being Brewster and the Thomas set, of course, features everyone's favourite (SORRY JAMES) Number 1 Blue LBSCR E2 Tank engine, Thomas. To be honest, I would 100% choose the Thomas set. Yes, as a starter set, it's not perfect, and I would change a few things, but take it with a Pinch of Salt and remember, it's good compared to Chuggington, and I bet a ton of people complained about the set before, but looking back and seeing where Thomas Wooden Railway (Wood) has come, you just remember it's really good quality. Speaking of quality, I've said 'Plastic' more than 5 times, which is a lot of times, and normally only 1 - 2 plastic pieces are seen in Thomas sets. And for a franchise that says "Chuggington Wooden Railway", you would expect MORE wood than plastic. If you've come this far into the comment, thank you for reading this, if you don't agree, it's perfectly fine! After all, there is a word called "Opinion". As far as i remember from my chuggington knowledge they don't really have firemen or drivers but they do have like repair people

The reason Wilson and Brewster have Chugganeer under them is to represent a group of chuggers that repair tracks in Chuggington called "The Chugganeers"
"Chuggineers" Most of the characters are diesel engines, the "chug" part doesn't make any damn sense.

My Mom asked me what I was watching. I told her a little bit about this video. She said she didn't like Chuggington. She also said the characters in Chuggington all seemed to have the same personalities when in Thomas and Friends the personalities varied. I have to agree with her.

If you asked me, yes Chuggington did start off as a Thomas clone, especially in terms of merchandise lines as seen in this video, but as a fan of Chuggington myself, the reason why Chuggington did that little bit better than Thomas was because at the time Chuggington had better writing than Thomas.
And by better writing I meant in terms of stories, I can excuse the fact that the engines bounce because it was its own thing and the characters didn't talk like babies and had more interesting personalities and variation in terms of the types of characters that appeared as opposed to the Steam Team getting most of the spotlight.
You'll be happy to know that since those early days, Chuggington's range of merchandise has evolved into it's own thing. They have die-cast toys with different couplings to Take N' Play, they replaced their Plarail and Wooden Railway lines with small bath toy like toys and the show is becoming more original.
Anyhow, it won't be getting better than Thomas anytime soon because apparently it is failing financially in recent years, quite like the Thomas range was last year, so there may be hope for us yet.
I do agree that the writing on Chuggington was better at the time. I did forget that Chuggington's entrance was around 2009-2011 when the Thomas TV series had abysmal writing and poor stories so that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing!

This has been a very fascinating and informative review! I would be lying if I said that I've never considered picking up any Chuggington items myself, but my heart is still set on Thomas, and my goal of collecting every TWR item out there is what drives me. However, if I see any items for a cheap price and/or that catch my eye, I just might have a look at it like you did! Who knows?

The sets you reveiwed in this video have 1-2-3 Track, the reason that track has the a male and female connecter was because the brand also have that standard type of track connection that you see in the bigger set.
Also Chuggenier Brewster is referring to his role in the later seasons, Brewster got into the maintenance group of the railway with Zach, Fletch and Tine. KoKo went to speed fleet with Hanso and occasionally with the tunnel runner Pace from Tootingtan (the Chuggington version of the mainland) and Wilson went to the rescue team with Jackman, Asher and Calley. Calley also got a new coat of paint from being orange to red a bit like Rosie with her new paint job.
12:53 Remember that TOMY handled Thomas Wooden Railway from 2011-2012. So it is likely they reused the mold.

Chuggington did have normal track. This track system is called 1, 2, 3 track, and it's kind of like chuggingtons version of the early engineers line. The 1, 2, 3 track system was made for younger children and made to be easier to use. They did have normal track though.

It's very robotic and feels alien like Cars. they do have humans are eh.

I know what this chuggineer thing is. Basicly Wilson, Brewster and Coco now have different jobs. Wilson is now part of a rescue team, Brewster is in a construction Team and Coco is part of an express team. And now they are called chuggineers.

Since the Chuggington engines have doors who's going in there plus can a person see out and aren't the eyes on the Chuggingneers one way mirrors for the crew to see out?

Basically the Chuggington engines in the show go by themselves on their terms. The only reason why their doors open is because in a few episodes like for instance is if…let’s say Peckham the puppy wants to go for a ride to the quarry with Wilson or Eddie(one of the background characters needs to get somewhere but it’s too far of a walk so he would hop inside Zephie’s (another Chuggington engine)cab….
But unlike the engines in Thomas and Friends who need their drivers or someone to be operating them…the engines in Chuggington go by themselves. They power themselves but if someone wants to hitch a ride or needs to hitch a ride….
If I could stayed an idea, perhaps if you show off a scrapyard in will it be episodes of your series you could put some of the rolling stock from these sets and then the scrapheap?

Chuggington actually was made by a company founded by the former ceo and coo of HiT Entertainment. Chuggington is coming back with a new season next year.

I saw that the chuggington magnets on my toys were taller than my wooden Thomas and friends engines so I got an early engineers engine and connected them and the chunggington magnets were still taller than my early engineers Henry or James
The chugging ton trains will also not fit in tunnels or under bridges made by Brio (older accessories), Imaginarium, or other wooden railway sets that are made by smaller companies because they are smaller than the tunnels or bridges that are made for Thomas and Friends and Chugging ton sets.

The Chuggington franchise doesn’t make anymore episodes, of course you still see reruns on Disney Junior but after that episode with the Diesel engines running out of fuel, chug patrol and the steam locos go to the docks to get the fuel for the diesels, but after that no more episodes which I fond strange, no actual ending or anything

I find it odd that Learning Curve made the Chuggington Wooden Railway larger than TWR, especially since both were made by the same company! I always thought the CWR range had neat structures with intercahngeable tops!
This type of track used is like the TWR wacky track, but more limiting and challenging! Definitely not around back in 2011!

The "Chuggineer" stuff came along WAy after I last watched Chuggington! but there were always "Trainees" (the younger ones) and just "Chuggers", who were older and more expirenced!
There was no motorzed range that I remember (except Tomy Plarail, which was Japan only), but there was an Interactive range, where the trains recognized each other and their surroundings!
I always thought Chugginton was more toylike and caroony, while Thomas was more relaxed and accurate!
Besides Thomas and Friends and Chugging ton, universal studios made a couple of short animated movies of The Little Engine that could, in 1991 and 2011.

Around the time you made this video, the Chuggington property was acquired by Herschend Enterprises, and have begun a revitalization of the franchise since then. New toys (motorized) have been available on Amazon, RUclips content and new episodes are still being made (very slowly at that), and it is still kinda popular now.
How about another Mass Unboxing video full of things you have acquired in the TRU closing sales?
and maybe expand it to include TrackMaster acquisitions as well. I know my local TRU had TrackMaster 40% off and their stock is nearly gone! This is coming from a TrackMaster collector
I actually haven't bought much since the Toys R Us closing sales began. Any "desirable" items that I was interested in were picked over really quick and the discounts weren't that great. What's sad is that even with the 20-30% off discounts, the internet was still cheaper than Toys R Us, which is probably one of the big reasons why they are closing. They can't compete with the online deals.

13:00 well, TOMY DID make the Chuggington WR sets, just like they made TWR for a year.
I think that the main reason that Chuggington failed is character reconition because I remember when Chuggington was popular leokimvideo did a test on his son to see if he could remember Chuggington characters names and Thomas characters names and he couldn’t remember and Chuggington names and that tells me that kids didn’t know who Chuggington characters were and didn’t buy them at least that’s my theory
While most characters have appealing designs, I don think they had the recognition and timelessness as the Thomas characters.
Maybe something to do with Frank actually telling the truth with his driver actually watching chuggington

the slanted straight track reminds me of a brio train set that had a ascending straight track, but that track is less steeper than the one used in chugging ton and it has more supports.
Its sad to see chuggington's toys better than the entirety of the Thomas franchise. If only we could have more episodes like the good ole days.

The games, the DVD's... The only merchandise I had was Tomy Wilson and Tomy Dunbar. I don't hate them now, I just like to reminisce the good memories I had with them. I respect chuggington, even though Thomas is clearly superior.
