I bought one of these a few years back on eBay, like others have said the special NRM edition of 2818 which is a bit pale in its green. Mine runs on DCC and I have to say the slow speed is amazing. It’s my slowest crawling loco and copes brilliantly with super-long coal and freight trains. I absolutely love this model and as a big GWR fanboy it’s deffs up there as one of my favourites. Having said that, if Hornby rereleased it with some of the improvements you suggested I’d definitely buy another one 👍🏼

I can remember my mate getting one of these in 2010 and it was the first loco I can remember breaking the £100 barrier for a loco. I can remember be amazed by the detail of the internal valve gear etc!

Nice look at the Hornby 28xx from the GWR! I like the details on this locomotive and 2-8-0’s are also one of my favorite wheel configurations for freight locomotives!

If I recall correctly, the Consolidation 2-8-0 was the most common freight steam locomotive wheel arrangement in the US in the first half of the 20th century. So there are many, many scale models of 2-8-0 US prototypes. I'm primarily a juice (electric) and diesel fan, but I do have a soft spot for the Boston & Maine's 2-6-0 Moguls that ran on the Claremont and Concord branch. Cheers from Wisconsin, Sam!

Bought one of these a couple years ago on a auction site, thankfully a smooth runner with no issues .
Just part of my collection, never found a 38xx though which is very similar I think it had the larger collett tender in the BR livery and a cab similar to the grange.
Nice locomotive a large improvement over the 90’s version
Would be happy seeing it make a comeback and also the 72xx

The 3800 ones had large cabs, the same tenders and were built from 1939, so appeared in gwr post war livery and br

Great to see and recently brought R3005 in BR black so probably around the same age/model. Have to say I fine mine very similar in performance and despite full running in, has taken a lot of running to properly down but goes well now.

I was gifted 2807 for my 25th wedding anniversary in 2016, by my wife. These and the Granges are my favourite. Also have a 2884 class black weathered. I’d love some more!
The real 2807 survives and is based on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire railway and should be back in service next year

I just checked my fleet history. I bought my Hornby GWR 2-8-0 in 2005. It came with a steam generator - basically you need to squirt some fluid down the funnel and after a while a wispy smoke is emitted
The Great Western lettering on the tender looks like it needs to be a bit further forward to make it more central to the tender. The 38xx version has fire iron tunnels that helps to mask the mechanism these run alongside the firebox at the main frame level. Great video as always 👍
Yes, Hornby got the lettering in the wrong position. They're all like it on this particular model, and they've also got it wrong on other Great Western tenders.

Mine runs beautifully now it's run in. I bought it back in the day and it languished in it's box until til 6 months ago, when my 40+years dream began to take shape. It will run in both directions over Hornby 1st Radius points and will pull 30+ wagons. Recommended!

Yes brought one when they brought out the new tooling.
Not a bad model, but there are a number of gaffs and faults on the model.
Used to fire and drive 28XX and 38XXs, they were OK but Hornby loat a good opportunity to bring out a great model.
May be one day.

These are still available....I bought a BR weathered 38xx recently and I noted there were stocks of 28xx class also.
Mine runs like a clock and is quite powerful.
1. Yes, I bought this in 2010 when it first came out. The National collection model in a ransid pale green. Other than the colour and absolutely horrific loco/tender connection it is a model I am fond of

Also. Please call it a "twenty eight hundred" when around Great Western fans as "two eight hundred" might get you an unpleasant glare...

@@SamsTrains I have done some fact checking the releases for you which I hope itself is correct.
There have only been 6 releases of this tooling (not including separate DCC versions).
3 in 2010 that were in the catalogue until 2011
1 in 2011 that was in the catalogue until 2014
2 in 2013 that were in the catalogue until 2015.
I think you are right to suggest this is a rather forgotten about release!

Got a 2884 off eBay last year in factory weathered BR early crest black and one of these 2800’s 6-7 years ago for silly money (around £80-90) on sale at the hornby shop at MacArthur Glen Swindon (appropriately)

All my locos are GWR. I have one of these, ot must be the older version from memory. Watching with interest.
Yes i was aware of these bought a GWR green one and a BR black one.
So impressed with this 28xx I brought 1 off eBay dcc fitted for 120. What a cracking model looks good in B.R black weathered. Runs well. Hornby can or did get it right. Shame they can't today. .... Hornby sort it out as your locos were good but now they cost the earth and don't work aswell. And yes Hornby should release this loco again. A diecast running plate is a must. Body too.
Wrapped polystyrene as packaging is the method for most of my Hornby locos from about 1995 to 2010. I never thought of the inefficiency of this process. I wonder if it was a specialist job. I wonder what the severance was like or were they retrained (pun unintentional)!
Managed to get one in unlined BR black second hand at a model shop in Glasgow would love one in BR unlined in green
I have an early emblem weathered 38xx/2884 (which is not exactly the same as the 28xx btw) - got it on the bay for 69 quid as new.
Great looking model, it would be interesting to compare it with the Bachmann WR 3000 ROD, WD Austerity WR, 42xx/52xx and the Heljan 47xx Night Owl 2-8-0 freight locos.
The 38xx batch is usually known as the 2884 not to confuse it with the 38xx County class.

With the high fire danger in England right now it would be useful if they still had some of the oil burning version’s around since they don’t throw cinders and such making it great to still run steam in high fire danger

Despite not owning this modern, upgraded model, I do have one of the original tender-driven tooling's except I think It was a later release in the 2000s as it is in a BR livery with weathering applied to paint. It is a very nice model, only paid £60 for it at a model railway exhibition but I do think this new version is much better.
I would very much like to see this model rereleased as I think despite those minor quality issues with the body and mechanism, I believe it's very good, especially for the early 2010s. However, I worry that if Hornby was to re-release this model it would be retailed for at least £200 given Hornby's inflation of prices so that would put me off. Would like to pick one of these up one day but for now I'm content with my tender-driven variant.
Lovely review Sam, Great Western engines never fail to disappoint in looks for me, even if this is a freight engine!

I've only ever seen that model in Swindons' STEAM museum, alongside some Stars.
I am pretty sure the 2807 version was a tie in with the GWSR as it came back into traction in 2010 following restoration from Barry scrapyard condition. I am a director of Cotswold Steam Preservation Ltd the owner and operator of the locomotive. We are now well into the Heavy General Overhaul, and it should be back in traction in the middle of '23
Hi, congrats on the 2807 rebuild, I had the privilege of firing and driving it in June 2024 as part of a driver experience day on the GWR. Just magic, the loco ran like clockwork, very friendly driver and fireman, and the railway staff were all very friendly. A day I hope to remember for many years. Would love to have this as a model. I think the coupling rods are causing the cogging. They do not run parallel to the wheel centre line when inching forward or back.
I have 2 of these, neither warped but both have the pipes poped out of the running plate- i take it that it shrunk or never fit. For me there are 2 other faults; the pump opposite the piston broke one of the crossheads when disassembling, the replacement part came broke in the same way, and the second fault is the double pivoet pony truck which manages to derail whilst simaltaneously requiring a msnufacturor cut out cylenders
Sam, another good review; I think the 2884 was a Charles Collett update with Windows in the cab sides. I bought one of these two years ago, along with the 42xx these make up heavy train motive power - pulling 7 plank wagons filled with real portland stone. My example has superb (DC) running that is definitely different to yours.
Buy another newer version from Hornby? No!
Hornby have earned four strikes from me: 1) poor quality motors, build and colour (green) on many models. 2) Appalling treatment of dealers, the tier system and redirected preorder stock. 3) price hikes, and Hikes and more HIKES! 4) NEEDLESS ANTI COMPETITIVE DUPLICATION OF MODELS ANNOUNCED BY OTHER SUPPLIERS...terrier, genesis coaches, 5101, lion (left from the titfield thunderbolt) 3rd class rocket wagons.....
My personal comments on Hornby are not insults, nor personal comments, but my wallet - since 2019 I have bought no new hornby wagons, no new hornby coaches and wherever there is a duplicate model I actively choose anybody but Hornby. If it is a Hornby only item, I buy it 2nd hand wherever possible, as with my 2x4073, grange, star, 28xx and 42xx.

Agreed a fantastic loco. I have the shirt button logo one and bought 2nd hand. Though I’ve needed to replace the base plate and tender chassis. My only issue is that the detail is so delicate, agree it needs a stiffer running plate. Definitely be interested in a new one but not sure the price would interest me. What hooked me is can detail and underboiler detail. Never seen anything like it. Both exposed and show it well. Not sure today you’d get that at the same price. Worth mentioning I had to hunt mine out. It was £75 and about worth it for the condition, but it wasn’t mint. Fortunately mainly mechanical issues (not body or paint) which are harder to fix.
They did an initial run with the chappy split poly tray then they rereleased them in the blister pack

In this case, I found my 2800 class to be extremely powerful despite the small motor- the only engine I have that can beat it is the Accurascale manor, and it’s even more powerful than my tender drive engines!
Number on side of cab is it a decal?
Also the odd engine out is the BR Pacific. I can't quite tell which class, but I'm assuming it's a Britannia.
Thanks Sam, certainly an impressive loco. I would certainly buy one in shirtbutton livery, but at a sensible price as has been commented given its age, but given Hornby's track record of price hypes I will remain realistic that this would be RRP £200+?. A re-tool would be nice with a better motor and a cast running plate. Still, I love it Cheers 👍

A very nice model of an important milestone in UK loco design. An amusing story is that when offered the new 9F 2-10-0, a far superior locomotive, BR Western Region supremos in the early 1950s said they wanted more 2800s instead, a design that was nearly fifty years old.

A hint to Hornby to upgrade with a cast metal running plate ? Would be successful - if at a reasonable price. Yes, I like this one but have 2 Thompson O1's to handle heavy freight on my layout and these are superb Hornby machines. Simple but reliable.

I wonder if carbon fibre rods like they use in RC aircraft could be used to help straighten out these wonky plastic running plates. It's a couple of quid a meter and a few 1mm diameter bits glued to the underside with some clamping may sort it out.
I'd be surprised if it would be that easy to fix... it's only a very slight warping, I think it'd be really hard to straighten it out... maybe worth a go though?

@@SamsTrains there are other ones on the site too but those are all £300-320 and probably work a lot better, Broadway’s aren’t cheap but unlike modern day Hornby they have pretty great quality from what I’ve gotten from them. The class is called the I1-sa I do believe
I was aware, I have the older tooled tender driven locomotive and it is a stunner! but new tooling without the need to hard-wire DDC would be nice :D Another note the newer tooling is a better representation but not to say there still are a few minor inaccuracies according to research. But still a worthy addition to any GWR fleet, a freight power-house!

I have both this and the cab window version in BR black. They do have the terrible pony truck swivel arrangement as used on the L1 and the 8F amongst others. Whoever came up with that design wants er removing. On this one it has been relatively trouble free but on the L1 ive had to modify it to a central screw pivot to stop derailments

I’m just beginning my hobby of model railways. I’ve chosen to go with Märklin Trix HO, C-Track (2 rail system, not the 3 rail) because
the track is just so simple to connect to each other, and it’s track also comes with its own track bed, however, the trade off is there
are no British Locos available.
I wondered if you have ever reviewed any continental trains such as Trix, also, my other question is can Hornby pannier/terrier class/type
run on Trix small radius?

Not sure if i understand what you are trying to say, but HO and OO are the same gauge (distance between the two rails/wheels) so you can run a OO model on HO track and vice versa, the difference is that the scale is a little bit different, HO trains are a little bit smaller compared to OO.

@@rossmorrow3013 All my Hornby steam locos, and from memory all the diesels and electrics, EXCEPT for the B12, happily negotiate R1 curves, including the rebuilt Hush-Hush.R1 is as tight or tighter than anything you can throw at them, or should I say throw them at. I trust this helps.
I have on of the tender drive 2-8-0s and the things tractive effort isn't amazing, are you aware if this one is better?

For a model designed as recently as 2010, the visible chassis block isn't really acceptable. I've been wanting to get a 2884 (which shares the same tooling) but after watching this I'll no longer consider it. Thanks for your review, it's helpful

I just noticed that the wheel configuration that is 2-8-0 is in The class name 2800.
Interesting to see this review. I bought one on eBay a few years ago, wasn't too happy with it since it looks rather like an ugly duckling, and swapped it for a 2-8-0 tank loco. Later I bought the Heljan version, 47xx, which performs extremely well and looks great.
I have this very loco. I fully agree, it is a great model.
I would not mind seeing a new, high tech model. A new model from Dapol would be great, as nice as their other new steam models.

I kinda like it when locomotives get by with a higher value rating because they have an old price to go off of and no new price. I don't know why, maybe it's satisfying to see models TECHNICALLY priced at a more reasonable price since there's no new price to update them with.

Id buy one if it had a better motor with a flywheel, they could easily use a bit less weight in the boiler area to fit a flywheel off the front in my opinion
An unusual wheel Config. - I've only got 2 2-8-0's but both are a 'Static Models' so they will never run - not sure if I'll buy 1 - they do look interesting thou... 🤔🚂🚂🚂

I knew one of these existed, but it's so rare to see one for sale. I still need to get one (and a 7200), and wonder if there are many differences between the 2800 and 2884 (mislabelled in the instructions as 3800) class models like there are between 4200 and 5205s. However, if Hornby re-released them, I'd only keep my eyes out on the 2nd hand market for the older release, due to Hornby's ever increasing prices (this'd probably be £180+ nowadays) and decreasing quality...
GWR only used the 2-8-0 arrangement for the 2800/2884 and 4700 "night owl" classes, the 4200 and 5205 being 2-8-0Ts and the 7200 being 2-8-2T (and the 3000 class being built by the ROD based on the Robinson 8K of the GCR then standardised by GWR because they were useful). Mostly because these were so efficient, they didn't need to build different types to replace them. I love a good 2-8-0, although I still need a stanier 8f (preferably with the high-speed cabside star and the yellow cabside stripe in BR livery) and a thompson O1, and I'd also love a LNER O7 (a wd 8f in lner livery, or BR livery with 6xxxx numbers) and a LNWR/LMS ROD/8K.
It looks like this model should have had the front screw link pre-fitted, but has fallen off, hence the bar part attached to the hook. I thought these were part of the Design Clever stage, like the heavy freight tanks, but obviously not. At least the box clearly shows the motor's protrusion in front of the firebox, unlike the Midland 4F which seems to have been photoshopped out (or the model was photographed minus its motor).
It does seem very rare to see one for sale - and I'd love to compare the two models as well! I'd guess these came before the design clever stage - the level of detail is absolutely fine!
