A helpful review. I have Royal Mail and am delighted with it. The tender pickups are a correct addition by Hornby in my view. A 5 pole motor is fine but the more pickups the better. As for etched plates, yes would have been nice but I have added Fox on my Schools and frankly I hardly notice them. But for you Matt I appreciate they are a big deal.
These are indeed, really nice models of the S.R Merchant Navy Class. I Would, like to see these produced in The 'War Time Black' and the BR Express Blue for the BR era modellers and collectors. Nice review, 'thanks' for the post.
TheTelstar008 Yes in theory Hornby can do an express Blue as they do a series 3 Merchant Navy which is Clan Line. So certainly a possibility in the future.
@BluebellModelrailway.. Just received, #21C3 Royal Mail Merchant Navy from 'Colletts Models' in Exmouth and Four matching passenger coaches. And I can wholeheartedly agree with you..! This was my first order with them, and it was dispatched the same day arrived well packaged and at a excellent competitive price. The website is clear and easy to use, and have some really good offers. So a 'Big Thumbs Up' for Colletts Models ''Good old fashion service'' and look forward to ordering online from them again..! Cheers..!
Yes indeed, just swapped some more orders over to him also, but yes agree with above totally, I know he moving shop soon also so good for him, do need to support the independent retailers over the bigger ones, which I am now doing.
Yes! Mr Collett did mention the new shop, and that can only be good news for both his local customer's down in Exmouth and local area, but also good news for us who shop online and looking for some competitive pricing, and excellent service..! And, I purchased ('Channel Packet') from another supplier and had the same problem with a broken brake rigging which Hornby are currently rectifying. But these are both, fantastic models and Hornby have done a great job on these new Merchant Navy's and would have benefitted from some etched name plates ect. All in all, really nice models and really pleased with them overall.
Looking at getting the BR Blue Merchant Navy, intend to re-number and name it to 35004 Cunard White Star - To add to that I want to fit it with DCC Sound. Great Video, however, I must say that the pickup's in the tender are for those you use DCC and if modelers have dodgy track which the loco's need to make sure they can get as much power to the wheels as possible.
Adi Pullen take it you mean the in rebuilt merchants as they have never made an unrebuilt till this one. it's a good model, but still some areas it could be improved.
Well presented informative review Matt. To my eyes, this is a superb model from Hornby. Though it might be argued some models are becoming expensive, I think it is fair when considering the improved detail that is coming with the new tooling. I preoreded one myself, but am yet to run it; my layout is in it's infancy. What coaches are you running with it? I was thinking Hornby R4734, R4735, R4736 and R4737 could be appropriate?
Rod Popplewell Thank you, I know they are becoming pricey, I mentioned this on several reviews, but as I say to everyone... try building one.. or buying a kit Built one... those will not be cheap, in fact almost double what rtr cost. We have had it too good for too long. This one doesn't get run very often, so no suitable stock for it, so when it does it's usually bulleid stock.
You could use pullman coaches to run with this locomotive as it did pull The Prestigous Golden Arrow Service just after the war but you would need to put Golden Arrow regalia on the loco available from Fox transfers
